Question About FastBoot - Droid Eris Android Development

I was reading this post :
Full Downgrade from 2.1root (any) to 1.5 stock - FULLY WORKING
and you flash the bootloader via fastboot. I have followed this on a phone being returned for refurb. It worked perfectly.
My question is:
Can you flash via fastboot without root?
If you do not need root to flash, would it not be possible to flash either the hboot from the original root leak or the one from the downgrade linked above?
Any input would be appreciated.

The stock root rom is still a rooted rom. Are you looking to un-root or just get back to stock rom from whichever custom rom you are on now?
If you want to stay rooted, but not run a custom rom follow this thread:

Flash the above PG05IMG_MR1_no_hboot.zip to restore everything to stock + OTA BUT still will have the s-off bootloader.
Rename PG05IMG_MR1_no_hboot.zip as PG05IMG.zip, and flash through hboot (like in the root guide).
To restore the bootloader, rename PG05IMG_hboot_1.4.0000.zip as PG05IMG.zip and flash through the bootloader. DO NOT FLASH THIS unless you are absolutely sure PG05IMG_MR1_no_hboot.zip flashed to your device, without issue.
Now you are done, enjoy. If you screwed up, and got a security warning contact me, don't stress. Then again, don't screw up.

Taken from AndroidPolice: [Tutorial] How To "Un-Root" The HTC ThunderBolt And Return It To Stock. Please check the site out.
One of the most popular questions about rooting the ThunderBolt is how to undo the process and return to stock, which renews your eligibility for customer support. Well, here you go:
Instructions:
Please read the whole tutorial first, and pay attention to every detail. Note that your battery needs to be charged to at least 40% at the beginning of the process, and remember to check the MD5 sums of all downloaded files before diving in. As always, neither Android Police nor Team AndIRC are responsible for any damage this may cause to your phone, and, needless to say, returning to stock means you will no longer be able to use root apps like ShootMe and Titanium Backup.
First, download the following files:
Stock firmware (MD5 sum: 7141f5620f6128af77d50587e341f4b0)
exploits.zip (MD5 sum: 3b359efd76aac456ba7fb0d6972de3af)
Next, push exploits.zip and misc.img.
Code:
adb push misc.img /data/local/
adb push busybox /data/local/
adb shell chmod 777 /data/local/busybox
To gain root and flash misc.img:
Code:
adb shell
su
/data/local/busybox md5sum /data/local/misc.img
If the output is anything other than "c88dd947eb3b36eec90503a3525ae0de," stop and start over again.
Now let’s write misc.img:
Code:
dd if=/data/local/misc.img of=/dev/block/mmcblk0p17
Rename "PG05IMG_Mecha_VERIZON_WWE_1.12.605.6_Radio_1.16.00.0223r_NV_8k_1.41_9k_1.64_
release_174685_signed.zip" to "PG05IMG.zip" before placing it on your SD card.
Finally, reboot into bootloader mode by entering the following command. Allow the stock firmware to flash.
Code:
adb reboot bootloader
You’re done – your phone should now be stock, S-ON.
Bookmarking this, just in case. Thanks, Jcase!
Looks like I'll be going back to Froyo for now. I believe the Sense in GB leak is older than the stock on the device.. plus.. camera doesn't work, weather in clock widget doesn't work.. quadrant score is pretty low.. As for now.. I don't see any solid reason to upgrade to GB.. (though I wish I did).. sigh!

First of all Jcase, thanks for the time, I know it's valuable to the community.
So just so I'm clear.... All I need to do is remove "hboot_7630_1.04.0000_110223.nb0" from the pre ota ruu or is there more to be altered than just that?
And if that's all I have to do is flash those seperate, could you tell me briefly why you could not just flash all at once? Would it not flash the rest of it if the stock hboot was installed first?

Yes, because some radios seem to cause the files to flash in different orders, doing it like this keeps me from having to make multiple versions.

Help with unlocking and so on

Hello everyone I was hoping I could get some help with my ATT Atrix 4G, as of right now I have my Atrix running 1.5.7 and rooted. For some reason about a week ago my Wifi just stopped working and says error. So I did a little looking around and didnt see a fix besides flashing the phone so I thought I might as well update to the latest and greatest. Now I did my phone so long ago that I have Tenfar's CWM recovery for Motorola Atrix 4G on it. I would like to flash to Flashable SBF: Full 2.3.4 with preinstall root and pudding bootloader unlock, full sbf but Im not sure the steps I need to take. Over all this is what I would like to do.
Number 1. Put CWM Recovery Mod for Atrix 4G and take off Tenfar's CWM
Number 2. Unlock the phone Pudding
Number 3. Flash to Flashable SBF: Full 2.3.4 with preinstall root and pudding bootloader unlock, full sbf
Number 4. Get wireless tether working.
One thing I don't fully understand is do you need to unlock the phone using pudding before you flash Full 2.3.4 with preinstall root and pudding bootloader unlock or can you just flash and have it unlocked?
So what I really need to know is the order of everything, CWM Recovery Mod for Atrix says you need to be unlocked to use it. So do I need to unlock the phone like in number 2 to before I do number 1 and 3 or can I flash number three and the will unlock the phone? Then do Number 1 and skip number 2 altogether? And as far as number 4 goes if some one could point me in the right direction for working wifi tether on 2.3.4 ATT that would be great.
One other thing I was wondering is it safe to flash for 1.5.7 to 2.3.4 or should I flash to 1.8.3 and then to 2.3.4?
Thanks so much and any and all help is greatly appreciated
Jay
1. You need too unlock first

As far as I understand, at the moment you are on 1.8.3.
In that case the very first thing you should do is flash pudding (BL unlock sbf).
After that install CWM and do a full backup.
When you have that you can install whichever room you want (don't sbf back to 1.8.3 tho - hard brick), you can install stock 2.3.4 via CWM and root it afterwords manually if you want. It's all a matter of which rom you prefer. Hell, you can try them all as CWM makes it all really easy.
Pudding needs to be flashed only at step 1 and it stays with your forever as long as you dont' SBF. Which you really don't need to do since we have CWM and fastboot.
Have a quick question, what is the difference between the automatic unlock script and the SBF that unlocks and roots via preinstall?
I am on stock 4.5.91 OTA with no modifications at all. Which method should I use? Which is safest/easiest.
I am on win7 64 bit with latest moto drivers installed.

Automatic script is supposed to automate (duh ) some of the unlocking steps for you, but I personally wouldn't recommend it. It failed for me and for many other people too if you read their thread.
With the manual pudding unlock - you can't screw up if you follow all of the steps precisely. But you do have to do all the steps manually, which is a good learning process if you ask me.
If you are on 4.5.91, after flashing pudding and doing the fastboot unlock commands you will get failed to boot error. This is normal and all you have to do is repeat the fastboot commands for the second time and all will be fine.
Do not under the fear of death SBF back to 1.8.3 or you will brick your phone.
Here is the link to the pudding SBF -

I would recommend using the smaller pudding sbf, since that's what I used. But from what I read, both SBFs work without problems.
You can root manually afterwords. It's very easy.

No you don't need to be on 1.83 but for easy I would recommend also if it helps these are the steps I took.
1. Unlock bootloader using auto script http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1182871 (I was running 1.83) (**I did have an issue after doing this where it wiped my phone and wouldn't let me go past the MOTOBLUR login so I just flashed back down to 1.26 OTA back to 1.83 then reran the script just to make sure I was still unlocked now I only read about that happening to one other person on their forum so chances are slim of it happening**)
2. Using RSD (the latest one 5.x.x) I flashed the 2.34 sbf that comes prerooted/unlocked although the root doesn't actually work then you have to follow the preinstall root method they describe on that same post for the sbf.
I never installed CWM but I would suggest doing that one last
**Edit: yes I did forget to mention my circumstance where I flashed back to 1.26 was Im sure pure luck that I did not hard brick my phone. This is not recommended. Why my phone did not brick is still unknown.
From unlocked/rooted GB Atrix
I'm on 1.8.3, unlocked, rooted, with Gingerblur and webtop hacks (web2sd, without dock, full ubuntu).
So I'm confused as to why I cant just flash ATT-2.3.4_Pudding_preroot.sbf, it has 2.3.4/2.5.91, unlocked, root preinstalled.
Would this not give me unlocked 2.3.4 with root ready to set-up? Would I have to "clean" it or is that just optional?
People are saying to install pudding using the automatic script first, but then why create the above sbf file?
What about the 1.8.3, unlocked, root preinstall sbf file?
So if I cant use the unlocked 2.3.4 sbf file, I would first flash pudding on my phone then which 2.3.4/4.5.91 sbf file would I flash with since the OTA update won't work due to mods, and because I didnt think we should use OTA.
I want to do the method that will prevent any bricking, but I also dont want to waste time or do unnecessary flashing.
BE CAREFULLY .... IT SEEM HE/SHE WAS LUCKY WHEN HE/SHE FLASH BACK TO 1.26... IF YOU RUN THE SCRIPT AND PASS STEP 3 YOU HAVE PUDDING SO IF YOU FLASH BACK TO 1.26 YOU WILL END WITH A HARD BRICK... IT IS WELL DETAILED IN THE SCRIPT ONCE YOU HAVE PUDDING YOU CAN NOT RSD ANY DOWNGRADE VERSION OF MOTO SBF FOR EX 1.26 1.57 OR 1.83

I flashed the full SBF of 2.3.4 with pudding and preroot already installed and I was left with a 0x1000 error which i was able to fix by simply rebooting into fastboot mode and then running 'fastboot oem unlock'. I was really scared when I saw the error but I was able to fix it. Just an fyi for anyone else that might run into that problem.
A few weeks ago when the bootloader was unlocked, and hktw craze began I was happily running GB, a couple days into it my phone started acting crazy, would constantly act if someone was touching it, and I noticed a very small portion of the touch screen quit responding, this happened out of no where, I took the phone back to at&t and they shipped a new one to me.
Now that has nothing to do with your phone but what I am trying to say is that if hardware on your phone randomly quit working more than likely having nothing to do with mods you've done to it.. take it back, get a new one, if you can.
Goodluck

This is a known issue and you resolved it correctly by redoing fastboot commands.
Many other people weren't so luck (didn't read instructions) and opted for an SBF back, causing them to hardbrick.

New ZE551KL locked bootloader/no root MM

Hi,
I've just got a new ZE551KL (z00td) with a locked bootloader and no root. Since the phone have the latest android 6.0.1 build I have difficulty to root it and unlock the bootloader. I did many research and I think it's really confusing. It seem to root my phone I need an unlocked bootloader but to unlock it I have to root my phone. The last interesting thing I've found for my phone is to flash a pre-rooted system.img & boot.img ( http://www.asus.com/zentalk/thread-80274-1-1.html ) but I also get stuck here since the guide tell me to flash both and I can only find the system.img.
I would like to know if there's any guide to root & unlock my bootloader on my ZE551KL. Thanks a lot!
It's a pain, but you may have to roll back to an earlier version of the firmware...back to lollipop. There are instructions in one of the threads on how to do that. I was able to unlock before the marshmallow update with the official unlock utility from Asus. Once you are unlocked, the easiest way to root is just to either boot twrp.img (previously downloaded and extracted to the adb folderon your computer) using fastboot (lots of threads here with instructions, too) and install supersu.zip. Or if you want to install twrp as your recovery, you can flash it from fastboot, then flash the zip of supersu. If you need more help, I am no expert by any means, but I have done this with my own ze551kl and might be able to give you some more hints.
Personally I would avoid the prerooted images as I had a lot of trouble with them and nearly bricked my phone by trying them out.
Thanks a lot for your reply! That's what I'm trying right now. I'm rolling back to lollipop from an official rom file from asus website. So far, I tried to flash it with stock recovery but it said that I cannot install a older version on top of a newer one. I did an downgrade of the recovery and now I'm waiting for the flash.

Excuse me, how did you do the downgrade of the recovery? Can you share the .img with me? I have TWRP installed with locked bootloader
I've found older stock recovery on this site : https://mega.nz/#F!lodnzDhK!H5ChxausDTyko1qGlnF7dw!Fg9FwLoa

Well it seem that I cannot downgrade, the latest recovery don't want to install a lower version and when I try to get a older stock recovery I still cannot downgrade since it get stuck at verifying image update package.
Also I've noticed that my version is 21.40.1220.1698 and so far I can't find anything related to this version for rooting or unlocking bootloader. Even the official firmware on asus website for the ZE551KL is older than this version and I couldn't flash it. I had to get it from https://asus.kremowka.xyz/categories/show/2 because I've soft bricked my device. I'm still trying to find a solution...

I would NOT use this stock image for ze551kl. There is one for the 601 and the 550 but not 551kl. I will find the thread with the first stock recovery posted that I used and post the link in a while. Give me a chance to find it. I would roll back to it, then upgrade to the stock firmware listed in the unlocker notes. Once it's unlocked, you can go to the last lollipop before marshmallow and flash it. I would then factory reset, then flash marshmallow. After you have it working, then flash twrp (or just boot it in adb) as I said above and flash supersu.
I will warn you that a lot of people have had trouble unlocking and this might not work to unlock.

http://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=3585486&d=1450811354 here is the link to stock for the very first stock firmware. I followed a video posted on YouTube from "themobileshots" on returning to stock from cm13. I doubt you can flash the stock recovery without flashing twrp first, then flashing from there. There are a lot of people in this forum that can help and most are pretty patient. Don't give up.
Finally I got my phone unlocked and rooted and it was too easy ...
I used fastboot to flash TWRP ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/zen...e601kl-official-marshmallow-wwv21-40-t3424903 ) and after that I flashed the latest CM13 from TWRP to gain root and unlocked my bootloader with this guide http://forum.xda-developers.com/zen...de-unlock-bootloader-asus-unlock-app-t3405850
I never though I could flash TWRP with a locked bootloader but it worked very well.

I tried to do a lot of things to get back to Stock ROM but they didn't work. I watched that tutorial but the files belongs to ZE550kl, so any other ideas? :crying:

Me too the first time I tried to unlock my bootloader in CM13 it didn't worked. I followed the guide and I did this :
Phone connected to the computer with USB debug and using ADB :
Code:
adb shell
su
Then I followed the backup procedure and I did the magic command to unlock it :
Code:
echo -ne "\x01" | dd obs=1 count=1 seek=16 of=/dev/block/bootdevice/by-name/devinfo
After I rebooted in fastboot so see if my device was unlocked but no it was still lock. I did two adb reboot with these command :
Code:
fastboot oem adb_enable
fastboot oem adb_enable
You have to do these twice.
After this my bootloader was still locked but I did a normal reboot and tried the magic command and voila! Bootloader unlocked.

If you have the ZE551KL like me you have to use file for a Z00T. You can check this page to know which device is a Z00T : http://forum.xda-developers.com/zenfone-2-laser/general/index-zenfone-2-laser-variants-t3369569
In my case I also had some difficulty to go back to Stock since I couldn't find the right firmware for mine because my android version is 21.40.1220.1698 and you have to flash the same version. The only place I found it was there https://asus.kremowka.xyz/categories/show/2 under the ZE601KL

The video is for the 550 but the process is the same for the 551kl (zootd). I downloaded the stock firmware at the bottom of the page on the Asus support page https://www.asus.com/support/Download/39/1/0/23/SZCx58yhB5Jst0yI/32/ , extracted it, grabbed the boot.IMG from there and put it on my memory card along with the stock recovery from the link above (renamed it recovery.img) and the full firmware (drag the original, leave it zipped). Then I did as the video says and wiped in twrp, flashed the boot and recovery, wiped cache, then flashed the firmware. It took awhile for the process to complete. Hope this helps.

Yes I'm currently writing one
For the stock MM yep I did it. I just installed the stock one after my bootloader was unlock and followed a tutorial here for root. I really like the stock Asus, way better than the samsung with touchwiz in my opinion.

So, to recap. If you are at the latest update, and have never previously unlocked bootloader or rooted your phone. The ASUS provided unlock tool won't work on the latest update. With it locked you can't install custom recovery or downgrade the firmware to an older version so that you can unlock it. Catch 22. Screwed until ASUS releases an update to their unlock tool or someone figures something else out. Or am I missing something? Cause I've been trying to do something with my kids phone for two days now and no luck here doing anything. Bout 8 million guides and files around the net and none of em seem to do squat in my situation. Any comments? Let's hear em.
