I've been having lag recently withing the SMS app. I will open it up and it's slow/sluggish and it takes my contacts pictures a while to load.
I know there are SMS apps like Handcent and Chomp, but I'm not a big fan of them. They've deleted all my texts multiple times and the interface looks cheap to me.
I delete my SMS threads every week or so and I do not have a lot of MMS messages in these threads. Does anyone else have this problem? Or better yet, have a fix for it?
Thanks.

I use handcent every day since the DX was released and it has never deleted any of my texts...and you can change the interface as well. And for what it's worth, haven't noticed any lag with it either. I just love the quick reply
Had a similar problem with my contact list...it was because I had removed atcmd.apk. Have you removed any bloatware?
Handcent > Stock messaging app
And if it deleted all your texts, you probably hit the delete button
I have removed bloatware so I'll need to check into that.
As for Handcent; it deleted all of my SMS messages twice. It originally did it to my friend, but I figured he was the one at fault. Shortly after that my texts got deleted. This never happened on the Droid X, only on the original Droid.
I just don't like the way the Handcent interface looks on my X, even though the stock SMS app is hideous in its own right.
i agree with you whole heartedly. i dont like chomp or handcent.. i know a lot of people do.. good for them. but i really want just the stock android 2.2 messaging.
I have the same problem. If I get a text notification and I select it from the pull down notification bar it takes forever to load. I've used hand cent and I got even more loading lag with that app so I uninstalled it. I'm wondering if its my conversation sizes or I'm running or of ram

How does DX handle deleted messages? I was just wondering bc I am used to Sense on WinMo and I would delete my messages - but then I noticed one day it stored all my deleted messages as well. Go figure.
Does DX work the same way? (haven't got mine yet) I mean could it be that you have hundreds of deleted texts hiding somewhere waiting to be emptied like on HTC Sense/WinMo?
I just wanted to let you guys know that I installed the MMS.apk package from the original Droid Cyanogen 5.0.8 build, and it works swimmingly. I used Titanium Backup to backup and remove the Motorola Text Messaging app and have seen no issues.
Also, if any of you have had a problem with receiving messages 2 or 3 at a time, (duplicates) this solved that problem for me.
hey where can i get my hands on that MMS.apk? please
Hey guys, I wanted to see if any fellow vibrant uses have been getting this.
This is the second time this has happened to me. Just out of no where I will launch my sms application (handcent) and the all of my texts are gone, like magic....
I have done alot of looking and found out that this is an old problem that is general for any android user. Wanted to see if anyone know the solution to what is causing this.

This just happened to me recently. I also use handcent. I dont know if this is the case for you, but I am a packrat, so I had a lot of messages.
I think the limit of SMS messages that can be stored on the phone is 5,000. The only thing that didnt make any sense is that not ALL of my messages were gone, I had 8 left from a recent conversation. I cant explain why they werent deleted...
We can start narrowing things down though. If you dont think you reached the phones limit, then maybe it is a Handcent bug, or a bug with TouchWiz.
it use to happen to me before when i had i believe was the mytouch slide at that time but i cant recall. and yes it happened when i had over 3000+ for my GF and like around 200 for other people! Now i usually just get to 600 or less and delete it and start over. I use the stock sms app btw and have no problems at all.
It happened to me too, not the first or second time it have always happened from the start. I don't use handcent, everything is untouched with no root.

Hmmm...a few people claim that this stopped after they uninstalled the antivirus app. However, I never used this app so it can't mean that. On top of that, many claim that this was due to 3rd party app. That wouldn't make any sence because if uninstalling different apps will fix it.
A few also mentioned that installing the sms back up also stopped the problem. It was also mentioned that handcent has an update coming that said they would fix it but that was almost a year ago. I couldn't find anything on the handcent website that fixed the issue. A lot of android users have the same issue as us on their forum. There are at least 10+ posts on this topic, non with a solution....

Have you removed the settings to delete old messages when limits are reached?
or have u edited those settings in the messaging app?
That's the first thing I checked
it's unchecked, no limits and no deleting if old text messages. Here's the thing, even if that was enabled, it would only delete after reaching the limit and keep it at that. What happened was that all the text messages just disappeared...

This used to happen to me on the G1 on occasion. I got around the issue by using the CyanogenMod Messaging application and setting the auto-delete limit to 200 messages per person, and using the free SMS Backup application to export all SMS messages to a label Gmail as they're received. I'm still using the same solution on the Vibrant, and I've had no problems since.
I didn't think that cyanogenmod is available for the samsung vibrant yet...or am i missing something?

The CyanogenMod 5 (Android 2.1) Messaging app can be installed over the Vibrant's Messaging app just fine. Download a CM5.0.8 ROM for the Nexus One and install the Messaging.APK found in \system\data. :]
I'll give it a shot and see how it goes.

Has anyone else run into this issue in the past week or so? Soon as I updated to the newest version of Google messenger ah which is now "Android messages" probably to reduce confusion between Facebook messenger, my messages app always says I have unread messages which I do not. I also do not use any other messaging app for texting. I do not even have the Facebook messenger app.
Things I have tried:
Deleting data on messages, fixes it temporarily after a restart but then comes right back.
Uninstalled app, restarted, reinstalled, restarted, still does it.
Tried clicking on every individual text message on each person, doesn't fix it.
Bothers me so much I did a factory reset, put no apps on my phone, disabled any bloat, downloaded Android messages, tried it, still saying I have unread messages.
I have no idea what else to try, from what I have heard on Reddit, many others are experiencing the same problem and no fix for them that they knew of yet.
I'm thinking it must be something with the recent update, obviously that was my first deduction after updating and it happening literally right after with never having problems but I'd figure I would try stuff and see what happens.

Any updates? My wife's ZF is experiencing the same thing. I noticed it on my own device a few days ago, but, since I run Action Launcher, I just turned off notification badges.
Had same exact issue but fixed it
Yes I've had this same issue since the update and it turned out to be related to Verizon Messages app. I opened Verizon Messages, opened each "unread" thread then I closed the app and disabled it. No issues since then with the notification bug in Android Messages. Also I made Verizon Messages the default messenger temporarily while I did the above and then afterward I switched it back to Android Messages
I followed almost the exact same steps, except for making it the default messenger. I'll try it again today and see if it works. Thanks!

Hmmm, this also did not work for me. I did make it my default messenger while I read the messages then went to disable and force stop it. I tried many variations of enabling and disabling the app too like blocking notifications, turning off system control, denying all permissions, nothing seems to work. I guess we'll just have to wait for an official fix it seems.
Same here. My wife's has been doing this for the past week. Mine just received the push today for it so now mine is doing it. Hopefully they resolve the issue soon.
Ugh same here again..
Yeah it's happening again now on mine so it does indeed look like we will have to wait for an official fix :-/ I think I might just download an older version apk until they are able to push a fix out for it
Same problem here. Uninstalled and rebooted. Did not install update. Works fine. Will wait for next update release before trying update again.
Moto Z Force Droid
Hello All!
I've been having this problem for a few weeks now and im all out of ideas of what to do.
Carrier: T-Mobile
Wearable: S3 Rugged
Extra Service: DIGITS
Coming From: LGV20 which never had these issues with the same plans and accesories
So to start, when i got the phone inittially during setup of the google accounts i noticed that my OTP SMS Pushes were not being received, or auto filling the information. I skipped past all of that and noticed that anywhere that OTP text were suppose to autofill in different applications, it would not even when i received the text and got a notification.
So after a while of using TEXTRA which was working fine, one day i stopped receiving ALL text not just mms. I was able to send but never was I able to get anything from anyone. I ditched TEXTRA and went back to the stock Samsung app and noticed that all text were there, even though it was not default. After using the Samsung messages app i decided to go back to textra, heres whats funny. After Textra did it's initial setup, it only showed half of the recieved text from up to that day. Messages were incomplete, some just had one reply from a user and nothing else. So I also tried this with Android Messages and it had the EXACT same message log as textra. Both were not receiving the full logs from the server. Today Android Messaging was working for a good part of the day, then it just stopped all of sudden again.
Can someone help me with this, I've wiped the cache and factory reset the phone. Ive added and removed the multi-line settings in the samsung settings. I've tried the legacy settings on textra. I've called the DIGIT's customer service to see if they could fix it but they made and interesting point that it couldnt be digit because it wouldnt interfere with 3rd part messaging apps. When i switch apps i always make them default, i wipe the app cache etc.
I have a gut feeling this has something to do with something with the default Samsung Messages app and it somehow restricting use outside of it.
I just wanted to reply and say that I've been experiencing the exact same issue and haven't had any luck Google engineering my way around it. For me, I'm seeing the issue with Signal, so I don't believe it's the 3rd party app's problem. I can send messages (SMS/MMS), but the Samsung Messages app is the only one that "receives" them. A strange workaround I found was to download Android Messenger, set that as the default messaging app, then set Signal as the default messaging app again. This worked for a while, but I think the Samsung Messages app recently updated, and it broke this again until I repeated the above workaround.
It's annoying enough that, without a fix, I'll definitely be flashing a completely stripped ROM on this phone once we have the ability to do so to get away from all of the Samsung apps that I can't disable. And don't even get me started on Bixby...

I haven't had any issues with my At&t model...Been using Yaata since day one (about 2 months).
Also, there are some "package disabling" apps in the play store that will allow you to disable any app you want, you don't even need to be rooted. It cost me $1.99 (or around there), but was well worth it! You can even completely disable Bixby, so the button is even non-responsive.
Having the same issue and I may have fixed it. I logged completely out of Digits on the phone (settings/cloud accounts/multi line/hit the ... menu and choose log out.
I have this same issue. No matter which 3rd party SMS app I use I have missing text messages on the T-Mobile S8. Has anyone fixed this? It is driving me crazy. T-Mobile replaced my S8 and the new one does it (not as bad but it does it more than I'd like). How can I resolve this? My friend haf the same issue, he has an unlocked T-Mobile working on AT&T.
I don't use Digits or anything like that... any ideas?
hi guys
all you need to do
go to setings
device maintence
battery
scrool all the way down to unmonitored apps and add your 3rd party sms app
youre welcome
This still didn't work for me and I am having the same exact issues. I have tried installing 2 different 3rd party messaging (Textra and Mood) and both were not working properly. I can send messages out just fine but when I receive them they are delayed (like 5 minutes or longer). Sometimes, I don't get the messages at all. Of course, the Samsung Messaging app (which I hate) works just fine. I have even "Force Stopped" it! What to do?
go into the stock messaging app, and turn off advanced messaging
Has anyone found a solution? I've been using textra for years & suddenly in March I started having this problem but with sent messages. All incoming texts are displayed but my sent texts aren't. I did try the 2 suggestions above. On a note 8, Android 8.0.0,Samsung experience 9.0.
SOLVED. I had the same issues and found the solution. Before you install your 3rd party sms/MMS you need to disable the default messenger. I uninstalled signal, disabled the built-in messenger, reinstalled signal. Now I can receive texts. Also my phone is not a Samsung.
So lately ive been having rather annoying issues while texting. To start im on T-Mobile. So ill be texting all day and then my texts will start to hang on the sending, little circle spinning forever, and then ill get a not sent error. However the text would have been sent so imagine how annoying texting me must be when im spamming the retry and its actually sending when it says it isn't. So I started cycling Airplane mode on and off and then I noticed something strange. After waiting close to a minute ill cycle airplane mode, magically the text is sent and a reply will load.
After that happened since im heavily using FB messenger anyways I made that the default app and I never had an issue minus one time. Im now using android messenger but I liked the stock app. SOOOOO the question is, has anyone else had this? is there a way to clear out and default out the stock app? I cant uninstall it it seems either.
anyone?
I'm on T-Mobile but waiting on my S8 to arrive so cant check.
I would imagine that it might be an RCS issue if you're texting other T-Mobile users on Samsung phones. If you're not and it does it regardless of who you text. I would try clearing the data/cache from the Messenger app.
I saw a somewhat similar issue when I had an HTC phone and used Googles basic Messenger app. It would frequently say a message wasn't sent. Yet the HTC app showed it as sent. I would hit resend and they would get spammed. Eventually I ignored it saying it failed.
If you tried other sms apps and it still does it then it's somewhere else on the phone. Maybe a glitch that might be fixed with a reflash. Or if it's in the network it self then Tmobile would have to make sure your Imei is being reported properly to their systems.
