HD2: an unnatural Love - HD2 General

So, I am not sure this belongs here, but...
Prior to my purchasing the HD2 I had a V3 Motorola Razr...yeah, big leap.
I carried a Dell Axim with me for everything else and was waiting on just the right phone. Pounced when I saw press for the HD2 months before US release.
I had never been a texter, twitterer, etc. I only ever used a phone for telephonic communication.
So, Monday we had plans to go to the Children's Discovery Museum with my six-year old son and my 4.5 month old son (yea-we are very sleep deprived these days).
We get there and it is closed. In our state of barely awake these days we kind of forgot that a lot of things are closed on Mondays. So my wife gets the idea to go to another Children's museum farther out, but realizes that we left the Garmin at home and gets pissed off. She also cannot remember the name of it.
Out comes my knight in shining armor...my HD2.
So I pull up Bing and say, "Children's Museum CT." Up pops the name and phone number. I call and they are closed. Then we think of the Maritime Aquarium. I say, "Norwalk Aquarium." Up comes the number and address. I call and they are open. Then I have Bing direct us to the place (as the wife whines that we do not have directions). We get there no problem.
Once there I am snapping off great photos left and right of my babes and zapping them up to Facebook at 3G speeds. I take a phone call and handle a work email as I am now synched with exchange (I know...shouldn't have on a family outing, but I am wired that way). I also emailed Netgear from one of my personal accounts about a problem with an RMA I am having with my ReadyNAS duo. I even played a rousing game of "Yacht II" in the museum bathroom...private stall.
I pull up Bing again after our trip and find a restaurant on the way home and look at their online menu to make sure they have food my son likes.
On the way home I text my Father regarding our plans on July 4th.
Clean it all up with my Task Manager and CleanRAM.
I sat back at this point fully satisfied with my techno purchase that has taken so much heat (and even a little flack from my wife) and I turn to her and say:
"Honey, if this thing could blow me, I swear I would divorce you and marry it."
I love my HD2

Thanks, Cam, for giving me a chuckle this morning. I'm so sick of reading how bad the phone is from those people that don't know how to use it. Great read!

Now, I'm sure we can find ways to make that happen, be it aided visualization or .....

Glad I could bring a little joy
All true too!
I even omitted some stuff like a multiplayer game of UNO and reading an eBook later in the evening.
I swear I love this thing.
Think HTC might use my tag line as a slogo? (HAH!)

Aw man...Classic! That has been the story of my life almost everytime we go on a trip!

Awesome story. My bro in law is still trying to flaunt his IP4G and I laugh as I destroy him doing everything. Nothing like the HD2 as my Wife has one also and has her head stuck in it leaving me plenty of me time! This phone is fabulous and I am so happy you use it properly!

yeah, coming from sprint's 3g, this thing is flying. On sprint I would get 500-700kbps. on t-mobile I am getting 2000-4000 kbps. Before, I would download podcasts at 50-70 kbps, now I get 300+kbps. Just downloaded the new eminem album in 4min.
Sorry Sprint, you were reliable, and I even have 4g in my area, but I wasn't jumping ship from Winmo to Android. And San Antonio is next on the list for the HSPA+ so it can only get better.
Only problem I have had with my HD2 so far is freezeups when I try to close file explorer and it is on the memory card. Lesson learned.

The Dell X51v was a bad ass lil machine. Saw they were selling now for $50 on ebay. I was actually thinking of picking one up just to play with and try a lil cookin.

Heres some iphone fun you can do at work. Launch your Youtube app and show everyone a badd ass HD video on youtube. Then have all your ATT 3g friends watch the same video on the iCrap. It will come out all crappy and low resolution. Then in front of everyone say damn your 3G is slow. Then turn on your wifi router and tell them to connect to your phone and watch the youtube video again. Then all the sudden theirs is in HD too. It makes ATT and iphone look like complete crap. I had 3 iphones watchign hd youtube on my inferior HD2 one night. The reason why this happens is iphone and att made thier app to only show low resolution video while on 3G, but full resolution on wifi. So when they connecto to your wifi it fools the iphone into thinking its local and runs in HD.

That was some story man. You know I have the exact same feeling that you so eloquently or should I say uniquely described to your wife. Just today I was looking at the HD2 lying on my microfiber cloth (I never leave it on a bare suface) and was thinking about how darn thin it is and just how much it can do. So many people complain about the HD2's size... I just don't get it. I am completely dumbfounded by the number of people giving away their HD2s for reasons people like us can't even being to comprehend. Sometime's I hate it when I think that this phone doesn't get all the appreciation that it deserves, but then I also realise that in a weird way it's good that this isn't as wide spread as the iPhone. It makes it more special to know that we belong to a select group that is more technologically evolved.
We've all come such a long way with our phones and PDA's. I was thinking about the long journey i've had with tech gizmos and how much things have changed and just how awesome they are now.
My HD2 does everything! This is what I used to dream of 10 years ago, hoping and wishing that some day i'd be able to do all this stuff on one device.
Wish came true. Just can't wait to see what HTC will bring us going ahead.
I honestly wouldn't mind an even bigger screen and hope to god that they include a trackball with the next one. A good replacement for the D-Pad that we all miss while continuing to look great.

HA! I really got a kick out of this!

Just a useless thread, but I can't help but share !
So I'm sitting at my desk yesterday at work, with my Touch just sitting out in the open, and along comes a fellow sales rep. He picks up the phone, looks at, and says, "HA! I heard this phone sucks!" I wanted to tell him to f*** off, but we joke around a lot, so I really wasn't pissed. But, I did get a kick out of it. Whoever owns this phone and thinks it sucks, probably shouldn't own this phone, and has no clue of what it can do!
i love the phone i just wish the screen was bigger!
Let me guess, he uses a i****?
mac envy
For those of us who started with DOS and then came this cool mac thing with drop and drag we understand this ibrick envy. thank god for competition because without it windows users would still be typing in **** like C: and not getting a smiley face emoticon. This phone is great (i would say HTC is great). its funny to see the i**** showing how to download 3rd party software as a "new" thing when this phone had that long time ago. now if verizon could get off their tech hiding, lets milk this one out mode...
I too get really tired of reading how badly this phone sucks - mainly on other forums and it's a shame cuz I think this is definetly my favorite phone in a LONG time. Windows Mobile has always been great for me but the past year and a half learning on this forum has helped me and many of my buddies "pimp" lol the crap out of our phones, seriously I am not jealous one bit of an iPOS. Even the ladies think it's bad too... You have all these guys out there that think they know what's up because they downloaded an app on their iPhones and its sooo cool then I pop open my Touch and own em all with all the crap this phone can do.
That's the problem now, though.. now the iTools going to be experts cuz of the "App Store" and will be all over you trying to impress you cuz they can "install appzz on thier iPhones!" OMFG WOW LOLZ!!!!! Shoot me now.
When I first got this phone it did suck.
The stock rom was balls. It was clunky, slow, and half the time incomming calls would not come through due to the phone staying in sleep mode.
Pocket IE is also terrible. It leaves a bad experience after using it for a while.
I can understand why people would give this phone a bad review.
After flashing a custom rom and adding a few 3rd party apps like opera 9.5 this phone is great.
Yea I agree...
When I first heard about this phone coming out I was really excited to see it in action, but when I tried it out at the Sprint store I was highly disappointed and basically opted for a Motorola Q over this phone. The Q was a nice phone while it lasted, but it only lasted me for a little over a year. I started getting excited when I heard the Instinct was coming out and got the "new cell phone itch" all over again. I then heard so many bad reviews of the Instinct and didn't want to switch off my plan (SERO). So I looked into this phone again and found out how crazily you can mod it (thanks to Youtube videos mainly). In my opinion this phone blows both the iPhone and the Instinct wayyyy out of the water. Now i'm wishing I could buy the Diamond when it comes out...but I'm in no rush to get rid of this phone any time soon.
I find that most people dont even know that Verizon sells this phone, besides, this thing is a Chick magnet, especially with my Whee Skin, Haha!
the only thing the diamond has on the vogue is a better camera, wifi and 64mb more ram, same processor same screen size 2.8" i would stick with the vogue oh and 2 more hardware keys
In 2 months it will be a year since the thread was created. Crazy how time flies....
I for my part still love my htc touch.
always get SO amused when an colleague, Iphone user, starts ranting about, ultimately, how better his phone is, and i go:
oh yeah, this Iphone is sooo awesome, but you know, it was too expensive at the time for what i was willing to spend for a cell, 600$ is... welll... a laptop, right? plus...you know, i couldnt resist 10$ a month for unlimited internet, and 10$ a month for unlimited emails & messenger... and theres the GPS chip... yeah it has a gps chip.. not the triangulation antenna thingy...did i mention 20$ unlimited... yeah.... but the Iphone rocks tho ! yeah... oh yah i get to install a lots of free apps too...ya know...
...kills me everytime...
(no seriously, to each his own, it's all good, but i'm keeping my htc touch for a while more, heck, till it catches on fire ! )
am keeping mine until i get my diamond2 on sprint..... contract ends in december... hopefully by then....
or if i like the touchpro2 ... MAYBE.. i dont like physical keyboards much
still fun
finally got my phone where i like it and it kinda bums me out cuz i dont wanna do any major mods to further trick it (and have to deal with the bugs). the vzw store only had two phones that came close to the touch even a year later. the only thing missing on the touch is g accelerator at this point. for the size and function i still love this phone too.
Lmao! Wow I forgot about this thread! Though I feel ashamed now cause I have an iPhone.

hahah ew.... iphone :S
great phone
iphone is nice ui but it is the only ui you get.The iphone is exactly like every other iphone. It is ok if you want to be a drone like everybody else, and want everything done for u, but if you want to alter your phone to the infinite level, in every category then this phone rocks. It is a little dated now but still has new custom roms coming out all the time. New programs and ui's being ported to it. This phone will be around a long time. I have unlimited internet for seven bucks, my email is free and sent to me via shaw's server just like on my pc. Free gps, I use orb to stream my analog and digital channels to my phone free with almost no buffering on a high speed network. I can listen to almost any radio station in the world free. Weather delivered , up to date...free
navigation....free. rss feeds, bluetooth, camera, windows office, opera , silent tethering to pc or handheld, google maps,mp3 player. There is so much you can do with this phone. It is a great introductory level phone for learning basics and beyond.i pay 37 dollars a month for my plan and i have a buddy who pays 120 a month for his iphone on a good month. i will stick with this one until i can afford a Leo or whitestone.
i luv the phone. when i first got it, i thought i would be bigger. I just wish it had more ram and a g senor.
i love the vogue but i hate winmo with a passion. sad to say but im ditching the vogue in a few months for the pre or hero.

I Smashed my TITAN to pieces...it felt great too.

So a year ago when I bought this phone I apparently paid $500 to be a beta tester of an underperforming, premature, lackluster phone. I've lost alot of time behind this phone's malfunctions. yeah it's cool that I can tweak it and write software for it, but if everything locks the phone up whats the point.
well it froze for the 1 millionth and last time this morning. I witnessed "The Flight of the Mogul", and it was freakin awesome.
I'm over cell phones, I'd go back to smoke signals if i didn't run the risk of arson.
i think we all feel your pain. I'm just biding my time until i can afford a replacement. Likely ill wait the one more year or so till my contract is up and go to an iphone lol.
I would have gladly taken that sucker off your hands.
Good, glad to hear it you smashed your mogul. Meanwhile while yours lays in pieces mine is giving me the power playing movies flawlessly in skyfire, giving me perfect voice guided navigation from IGO 8, the piece of mind of the newest windows live speakable search, fast email and texting with a full qwerty keyboard, the power to retrieve files off my desktop at home, perfect access to my IM accounts, and new home screens whenever I grow tired of one. And you know the one thing I haven't worried about since DCD 3.x.x is ram. Everything runs smoothly and transitions like men in your mom's bedroom. Trash the mogul in some other forum, because for the majority of us it works perfectly. Compare it now to the problems the diamond has. I think you'll agree it has far less at this point. I will do fine on carrying me into the next generation. Nothing except the touch hd is really worth getting excited about right now and it is having trouble making it to the US. Why don't you just go get a blackberry storm? It is easier to use for you.

I'm happy for you. I admit that the only thing I haven't done is flash to a custom ROM, believe it or not I downloaded the latest DCD this weekend but never got around to it. I think the moral to the story is that the ability to customize a device with unofficial ROM's should not be the saving grace of an otherwise poor performing device. I believe that it should be an extra, cool thing to do for geek cred, not because the phone sucks otherwise. what's so hard about optimizing the phone for its hardware before release.
I've been riding it out for a long time, thru all the updates and ports of apps from other HTC's. So i think I'll just wait until the Raphael is improved upon, atleast it has a reasonable amount of memory.

I feel you. a friend of mine has it, and it's nice, but i can't roll with Verizon, plus i dont want to be apart of the crackberry scene, and i dont want to sell my soul to Apple, so I'll probably stick with WM, At the end of the day, m$ has the most mature API. i been drinkin their koolaid for my entire career.
but in the meantime I guess I'll resort to some good 'ol fashioned yodeling.
If you have had this much trouble than no matter how you look at it, the only reason you've had so much trouble is user error. If you don't know how to properly install and cook apps and roms, then get the f out of the kitchen homie. The mogul is for people who understand devices and computers or for those who want to learn. If you are looking for a cool devices that has not even a quarter of the programing capabilities than buy a storm or iphone. They are pretty. Or buy the diamond or the touch pro and be in the same boat. The mogul is old now and it still is running with the big boys and now more than ever doing it reliably. You have a problem with installing custom roms. Its called sdk my friends. Windows did the bare minimum to release the platform and then put it in the developers hands. Developers like dcd that have more talent in their little finger than most the people at microsoft or blackberry or apple. Wait for the standard blackberry and apple updates then as they are behind from the moment they are released. And mark my words, if you have trouble with the mogul you will have trouble with any htc device. They all have their ups and downs though the touch and the mogul's downs are pretty close to having them all worked out.

ok Sweety Puss.
i don't take it personal. but yes i did smash my phone. lol.
I feel for you.
Just today I opened up the Media Player, went to the music library, and noticed one of my albums was in there TWICE. I couldn't believe it. I had to do an 'update library' just to get rid of it. I thought about throwing it under a truck. The horror of it all.
I'll bet by this Friday, I'll have even have to do a soft reset again. I already did one LAST WEEK. Uncalled for.
Flaming POS.
What's funny is that the 6800 seems to have the least appeal to two sets of users. IMO there are four broad categories of users:
1. Casuals
2. Intermediates
3. advanced
4. Pushers
Casuals are people like my mom. You know them. They want a phone but don't know the first thing about how to do anything with them. Believe it or not, the 6800 is just fine for them. You can use the standard WM 6 interface right out of the box and it serves as a very nice pcoket computer and cell phone. You see, casual users don't need a bunch of fancy tricks and special apps. They are happy to simply get a cell phone, camera, qwerty key board, and push email and pim. Nevertheless, casual users are apt to enjoy the neat interface of the iphone or storm.
Intermediates are very likely not to enjoy the 6800. Why? Because they know just enough to be dangerous. Just enough to flash a ROM improperly or load up their phone with a hundred apps and then complain when their phone becomes unstable. They get frustrated and do things like throw their phones in the air when they have no one but themselves to blame.
Advanced users, I think, like the 6800 because of its work-horse reputation, functionality, and its modability. Advanced users know how to keep their phones trim and fit and in good shape so that it doesn't crash all the time. They know how to mange their ROM and use the phone with as great efficiency as possible.
Pushers like to push the boundaries of the phone world. They are not happy unless they have the latest and greatest of everything. Latest features....latest hardware....latest software. Pushers will hate the 6800, just as they will, frankly, end up hating anything that was released more than 3 months ago. Why? Because vy then the next latest and greatest gadget is released and, by God, they have to have it!
I LOVE my 6800. It does almost everything I could ask of it. The only thing it really lacks, IMO, is a g-sensor, and so far other than the cute use as a bubble level for handyman work, all of the g-sensor stuff seems to fit in the amusing pout pointless category.
People are constantly amazed at what my 6800 can do. I have had iphone users, even after the app store opened, literally downtrodden after everything they showed me they could do I could do and then I went on and did about a dozen things they could not do.
I have complete voice navigation and gps. I have finger friendly and flick friendly apps up the ying-yang. I get the full web experience and can view streaming videos and flash and you tube on the net.
I have voice activation. I have weather. I have swappable memory (try that iphone freaks) and have every single song and most of my movie library on my phone. I recently took a 12 hour flight by myself in a jet that had a power outlet at every seat and I needed nothing with me but my phone to keep me not only out of boredom but actually entertained.
My 6800 is my office...anywhere I go. I can access my desktop at work remotely. I can not only view but create and edit Word and Excel docs. Need a quick deal memo during an important business meeting at lunch? I can take notes with my stylus BY HAND, then type them up into a Word Doc deal memo and email it to an office to have it printed. I can then run some figures in Pocket Excel to project the proceeds from the deal. All in the restaurant over lunch.
And I have yet to see ANY software keyboard come close to the hardware keyboard of the 6800. The iphone keyboard sucks. So does the diamond and the storm. They all suck...by definition. My hardware keyboard is large, usable with my big thumbs, and doesn't take up an inch of screen real estate. Can you say that of the iphone? The storm? The Touch?
I fully understand the RAM issue, but holy crud...just how many toys do you need running at the same time on your phone? I do plenty on the 6800 and I don't mind the RAM. Yeah, I suppose it could load in 2 seconds instead of 4. But who except a PUSHER would care?
Devin
Nicely put Devin! I don't think I love my Mogul quite as much as you, but it will do till significantly better hardware comes my way.
Some people take this hobby a bit to seriously. others, apparently need anger management counseling. in the end, it's just another PPC. an I bet the OP is just eating all this attention up. reminds me of my over spoiled girlfriends kids. wannna just whack em with a newspaper! heh. I have read so many complaints and rants and raves. But all in all have seen most of them fixed with roms and kernels. This is a pretty pointless post but I just wanted to see one with people that are happy with their evos. I got mine at bb on launch day and still rocking it.
Sent from my Evo using XDA app.
Happy? I just proposed to my Evo.
Although nothing will beat my first phone (Sanyo VM4500)...the EVO is the 2nd best phone I have owned
++ I got mine on day one. Just did OTA updates and turn off all radios until I need them. I can go 3 days before a recharge with moderate surfing, texting, and phone usage. I read XDA forums mostly to understand how the phone works and how to avoid problems, but I think the stock EVO used sensibly, just plain rocks.
I'm not one of those who walks down the street with my phone in my face, nor do i walk through the mall with it glued to my ear, nor do i care about email push. I can understand how battery life is an issue for some, but for a dinosaur like me, it's the best Smartphone I've ever used. In fact, when you think about it, it's actually more powerful and capable than the Win 98 computers we were using just 10 years ago!
Android is a great os if:
You are a min / maxer and can take things into your own hand with root and custom roms.
The issue comes when you are not willing to do the above but still expect certain things out of the box.
The average mindless cow with little clue will do just fine with any os.

Mindless cows are entitled to buy these phones. They are not specifically for hackers only.

There are some people....
I agree that unfortunately this device does not come out of the box set up well for the average "phone" user. Getting the most out of the EVO or Android in general is not for the faint of heart or impatient (or stupid) people.
That said, I too am almost ready to propose to this phone. Two more paychecks and I can afford the diamond crusted engagement case I have on lay-away (that was a joke..)
I would say best phone ever but to be honest I don't think of the evo as a phone, at all. It is truly a pocket sized computer that comes with a phone and is sold by a phone company. It's nothing short of revolutionary.
I got mine launch day from Best Buy too, been loving it, no root or nothing and no problems.
If you use the evo stock, you don't have problems, just battery, but if you root the phone, the problems start!
Sent from my EVO!
I got mine from launch day, been loving this phone already. I've rooted and don't see much problem at all. I think if you know what to do after rooting then most problem.can ne resolve easily.
I've tested so many rom and still can't find much problem at all.
This indeed the best phone i've own.

I'm still using stock from the day I bought it, the 2nd week it came out with all the OTA updates. No root, yet! I get 14 - 18 hours per charge with pretty heavy usage. People just need to read and tweak.
I love my Evo and my girlfriend loves it when I bring it to bed with us.

Just? Dude, we've been happily married since launch
I just started a similar thread before reading your thread.
I'm rooted, running baked snacks 9.6 (the latest was slow) with the netarchy-toastmod FPS fix and overclocked with setcpu. I leave gps, wifi, and 4g on continuously just because I can (I rarely get 4g reception in San Marcos TX). Last night I didn't even charge the phone and I still had 50% battery life when I woke up. I get 55 frames per second consistently (stdv 5-6), and 5-point multitouch (I can play 5-note chords on piano app). It is blazingly smooth and fast. I spent hours downloading apps... probably have like 70 by now and it's still incredibly fast.
I love how I can just go to Google Nav and say my location and it understands me, and loads the destination onto the gps. In fact many apps I can just talk right into the phone and it just translates it.
I completely customized the home screen. It's pretty much my dream phone post XDA help. I have yet to find a single flaw. And it was a lot of fun learning how to root, flash roms, install kernels, and customize. It's like building your own PC and tweaking it to perfection. But then again I like projects and customization so the android community and xda community is definitely the place for me. The developers here are so awesome.
The difference between the EVO out of the box and the EVO in my hands is so large it may as well be called a different phone and it's all thanks to open source, sharing community.
I guess it's obvious I've become an EVO junkie by now. Iphone's are smooth out of the box, but so boring. What's to play with?
I compare the iphone to an xbox360 and an EVO to a PC computer. The former works out of the box (mostly) but you are limited to a closed system. The PC can be endlessly tweaked and customized.
Anyway, cheers!
The Evo is a great phone, and a great development tool.
I have had mine sine i/o, and my network is big red. It's created quite a powerful duo for me. No 4g, but I don't really care about that. I don't even think it's in my area, but I'm not even about to map check it.
This phone has allowed me to get back into android programming etc without hassles, and I've been doing more and more things every day. I look forward to being able to release roms, themes, etc as well, once I get the hiccups polished out
As for the Evo, really, if it wern't for the XDA community, I don't think it would get as much play. I know I would have ditched the phone has it been a case of the Droid X, etc. It came down to the wire, and the Droid X was just days away. I made the choice to stick w/ the Evo, and stay far away from the Milestone boot loader.
I have the Evo to thank for a renewed interest in mobile technology and programming that I have not had, since the Touch Pro 1 days.

What did it take to change the MEID to make it work? I have a DroidX and hate it, I figure I can get a cheap Vz phone and port the MEID if I can find the tools.
Any way, good choice to stick with the Evo, I keep hoping to get one but Sprint sucks where I am at.

I didn't go that route.
You can still manage to make things happen if you bash your head against a wall long enough, and talk to a million different people.
But don't forget. You get no insurance, no support, no anything. They provide the service to you, that's it. Provisioning works with *228, no hassles, but the initial work has to be done by you. Pre-programming, setting up the intricate details and whatnots.
Side note: Why do you hate the Droid X?

If Vz won't accept Sprint phones then how did you get it to work?
And sorry I didn't see until recently that MEID thing was illegal, I actually cam back to delete it but I guess I am too late...
Physical buttons are my #1 peeve I despise the ones on the front and I constantly hit the camera button on the side.
I should not EVER have to hear a button click to press and the pressure it takes to push them could be measured foot pounds plus I have big fingers and always hit 2 at a time.
- There are no words to explain how much I hate physical keys, it takes all caps and vulgarity, you get the idea.
Also coming from an iPhone with great asian support built in, including hand writing, this has none and even on the market the apps to replace it suck (I am being generous here.) I used it daily on my iPhone.
No front camera.
When I turn on Wi-Fi my bars drop in half.
Motoblur ... yuck

goodbye xv6800 hello droid 2

So I'm sitting in traffic the other day and fire up the Bing app. Lo and behold I discover they've eliminated my ability to lookup traffic on this device. WTF? And it won't reliably kick me over to the browser either.
Sure, it's a free app, but one that's kept me using a WM phone.
No longer. I'm off to go buy a Droid2. I've been waiting for a better phone and would've stuck with WM. But not when they take a perfectly good app and phone and destroy functionality on it. Who the hell thought this was a good idea? Couldn't they at least have handled the transition better? Yeah, yeah, I know they want to promote using more features and those require faster phones. But instead of giving me an upgrade path they've just alienated me as a customer.
WM7 just doesn't hold out enough hope at this point. I've got a Zune (gathering dust in a drawer), so I know the pain of failed expectations. MS has just totally dropped the ball in the portable market.
Truth be told I don't really need to use than many things on a phone. And it'll be a cold day in Hell before I purchase an iPhone. That company's policies are just despicable. Not that Google's any lily-white virgin either, but at least they don't censor applications and developers.
Goodbye WinMo, it's been nice while it lasted.
Brand new Droid 2 in my hands. Local store in Rockville had 80 of them. Talk to Daren there if you want decent help, nice guy.
First impression is it's almost the same size as the XV6800. A bit thinner and heavier and maybe a slight bit taller. But it's got a nice feel to it. Even fits in my XV6800's fabric sleeve. Oddly enough with all the cradle and holster options out there I prefer just using the sleeve and keeping it in my pocket. Even got a desk cradle for it. Out the door for $253 total, and that's before the $100 rebate. Gotta love NE2 promotions.
Android is a bit different. But like WinMo it's got plenty of ways "you can't get there from here". Editing contacts and such is different, but nearly as annoying as WM6.
Best impression so far? That the phone itself rings the first time, the same as what the caller hears. Annoyed the hell out of me on the XV6800, it wouldn't ring until at least one, usually two, rings had been heard by the caller. I had to change my voicemail ring delay because of it.
It's the little things, and that's what has pretty much killed the WinMo devices. There's just too many little things that suck. I wanted to believe in it but I've since given up. Ah well.
And now I've upgraded to a Droid4. Kinda miss the smaller form factor. And the old XV6800 sleeve doesn't fit it.
MS drove me away by abandoning my phone in the maps app, now they're driving away the winmo7 users by having no upgrade path to 8. Still not grasping the value of keeping customers. No chance I'll go back to an MS phone given this clear track record.
Meanwhile the D4 is nice, but the big win was rooting it and running wifi tether on it for use as a hotspot. Beats having to be limited to my 5gb/month on the USB modem (now a 10gb shared plan with the wife's ipad3-4g).
The old mogul was a good phone, we had lots of fun times and custom roms, winmo was glorious in its day, Microsoft just let it all slip away to android and ios.

Yes, it is sad that they quit supporting Bing for Windows Mobile. Have fun on your journey with Android!
I too finally ran out of spare 6800's and had to buy another phone. I went to Touch Pro for awhile and started cooking for it until I got a Droid X2.
It was a pleasure serving everyone and meeting people. The Mogul was a great phone and I learned a lot from it. Its funny how it just seems like yesterday.
Take care
Yes, it is sad to see this section of XDA closed... but, we must move on. The future awaits! =] For those still needing help with this device, check out PPCGeeks.com

A funny story for ya

My friends and I are at the Radio City Music Hall, waiting to get into the christmas spectacular. One of my friends is late, and the rest of us get fed up waiting and we get in the really long line.
We're making decent progress (and the line is growing behind us), and my friend shows up. So we kind of slide out of the line (but not quite) to wait for him, and we're casually trying to get him to cut in line with the rest of us. It's all a bit awkward.
I see two security guards giving us the eye, and finally they walk up to us and ......
Guard #1: 'Excuse me.......'
Me: 'uhhhhh, yes?'
Guard: What phone is that??!? That's great!!
He's going off about how one of his coworkers has huge hands and how he'd love the Note. Meanwhile behind them, my friend gets in line. Bwa ha ha!
Side note - I was eating dinner tonight in a restaurant and 6 people (including the restaurant manager) wandered up to our table asking me questions about the note - What it was, where I got it, and how much it was. It was a little crazy actually.
- Frank
Same here. I've had quite a few people ask about the phone. Every single one of those inquiries were also supplemented by some form of "Awesome" until i told them that it's not available in US yet
Haha yeah I can relate. I was at Best Buy Mobile yesterday and the second I brought out my phone the representative was all like O___O and asked what kind of phone it was. He even laid it flat on his hand and went, "damn it's as big as my hand." Then four other people surrounded me and commented about how it was like a mini tablet and how nice it looked; one even compared it to the Dell Streak. This phone is definitely a head turner lol.
Yea i have had the same thing happen but some times I think people are just plain nuts.. as several of them ask where did I get the phone and I said Poland and they look at me then asked "how was the weather there" Some of these people even know me and know I have not left town
Must be Black friday issues in the mind...
