Supposedly Wisconsin has a 4G network already, and it is just a licensing issue?
Any truth to this?
it would be nice if madison would get 4g. we already have a city wide Wifi network. I could see madison getting the google internet deal and not having 4G in place.
I'm not aware of any existing 4G network here.
Madison did (or still does?) have a WiMAX network, courtesy of TDS. However, this was "fixed" WiMAX for home broadband access and not the "mobile" variant.
I don't see this service advertised anymore either.
So there might be something to it?
I didn't know Madison had anything of 4g...
That would be nice if we got 4G in Wisconsin. I live in Janesville and ATT just started their 3G service out here like 2-3 months ago.

Any new info on this? I'm tired of paying a ten dollar 'premium data' fee and not getting the service. It's understandable if not every city can be turned on right away, but to not even know a target date makes me consider dumping sprint for T-mo.

You bought the phone knowing what coverage areas they have planned out by the end of the year.
Beyond that, nothing else is known. Sprint will announce it when they are ready, if they do.
http://shop.sprint.com/en/stores/popups/4G_coverage_popup.shtml
That shows you their 4G currently. Wisconsin is not on it.
I was talking a sprint representative at the sprint store in Madison, and he said that Milwaukee was suppose to get 4-g either the end of 2010 or the beginning of 2011, and Madison would be a few months behind that. Hard to know for sure though....
I just love rumors and hearsay. I just wait until things are said officially.
Correct me if I'm wrong but aren't we still getting a pretty darn good value, with or without 4G, when comparing to other carriers and what they offer?
I hope they get it in milwaukee I live by the city and go to school in whitewater.....so madison getting it would be nice although I probably couldn't pick up the signal...i heard they would be getting it...milwaukee that is...by the end of 2010

Thanks for replying with absolutely no help at all. It's this type of service and dismissive correspondence that put Sprint on the bottom of the pile two years ago and only having the cheapest plans has brought this company back from possible bankruptcy. It's exactly what has me leaning to Verizon when my contract ends.

Sprint just put out a press release announcing more markets to be upgraded to 4G this year.
With 27 markets already equipped with 4G and more being planned for this year, Sprint is fulfilling its promise to light up major metropolitan areas with speeds that are up to 10 times faster1 than 3G.
Newly announced markets that will see 4G in 2010 are Cincinnati, Cleveland, Los Angeles, Miami, Pittsburgh, Salt Lake City and St. Louis. Earlier this year Sprint announced that it planned to launch 4G in Boston, Denver, Kansas City, Houston, Minneapolis, New York, San Francisco and Washington, D.C., in 2010.

Same here. I won't buy into Clear as a "home and travel internet replacement" yet because it's quite expensive for just 6Mbit.
However, I'd love to have a WiMax phone
WiFi tether would mean no extra cost for WiMax on the go.
Cincinnati, Cleveland
what about the rest of us in the middle
Here in Austin, the cost of Clear for home and away is the same as ATT uverse home internet with the same speed. That being said, I don't use a laptop so, I'm pretty hyped about a wimax phone! Unfortunately, I have to wait till December for my upgrade
How about the ville? We have Churchill Downs... Doesn't that count for something?

Actually, their pricing isn't that bad, but they're going about it ass backwards. They're rolling out to major metropolitan areas where high speed, wireless Internet is already easy and cheap to come by.
In the town I live in, people are still paying $50 a month for a 512 kbit connection. If they were to put up a 4g tower here they'd sell several thousand units the first day they turned it on, not to mention taking phone business away from the only cell carrier that has decent coverage here but is WAY overpriced.
Sure, they wouldn't have the millions of potential subscribers like they do in large metro areas, but at least they'd be marketing to people who see the product as appealing.
Don't get me wrong, I do understand the appeal of large cities, but from a business perspective I know I'd personally have an easier time turning a profit with a thousand eager customers than a million who see my offering as a joke.

I couldn't agree more. Two low tech towns that I bet have half the number of users using data cards then Columbus. (I say this as I stare at the 3G indicator on my overdrive). Watch, they'll give it to Toledo and Youngstown before Columbus.
From what I have read, Sprint and Walmart have a deal to put up 4G towers on top of all there stores. Seems to me like just about everyone could have some decent coverage if they did all these first. Everyone has a wal mart around...except for maybe south florida. I don't think there is one any where near South Beach Miami.

if you live in downtown boston, you will see 4G flickering on and off.
Boston common was also just lit up as well.
Most of downtown boston is already covered.
Good progress!
So what
Massachusetts is a major hub it should have been up and running a while ago. I been with Sprint for more than a couple of years and I remember seeing banners in their stores featuring 4g a year ago. And, when asked about it, "its new and its better than 3g" nothing else. Mind you its about a year ago i was told this by sprint rep on Boylston Street store.
im excited, boston getting 4g is one step closer for burlington vt to get it..but i wont hold my breath on that one
So, upon visiting a local Sprint store to attempt to preorder a Nexus S 4G, I was waiting for a Sprint rep to not be busy. This gave me time to look at the EVO on display (mainly because I wanted to compare my awesome Gingerbread to stock Froyo ).
I looked at the statusbar, and I noticed a 4G icon with some service...I instantly enabled 4G on my phone and was stoked because I highly doubted Gainesville would ever get 4G, so this made me think that only the Sprint store was broadcasting a small 4G signal to demonstrate the speeds to customers (pretty unlikely, I know), but upon leaving, I drove a few miles away, and still, I had full 4G service. As long as I am not in an area with an excessive amount of trees, I have decent service...soo happy
I guess I am one of the few using this service, because I have some pretty decent speeds for WiMax (about 2x what I have gotten in Tampa).
www.clear.com/coverage and zoom in random towers are popping up all over the county. Its "Clear on the go" coverage...
awesome i never thought they would have it there i live in tampa so i know how gainesville is crongrats!
you just made my day, been at UF all this time with my EVO and no 4G
LMAO i cant believe you guys didn't even try it i usually test everything where ever i go to see what i can connect to lol.
After months and months of nothing, you sort of give up on it. At least that's how I have been. But that Clear coverage link jefbal99 posted says there might be some a few miles away (Peoria, IL area). I'll have to drive to that area and see what I can get. But, even with zooming in, no antenna icons ever show up on the map, just light green. Maybe it's not as hopeless as I had figured.
Which Sprint store were you at when you connected?

The light green areas don't list the towers, just coverage. I can verify that every place I've been with light green gets 4G connection.

I'm glad we finally got coverage in UF... what sucks is that they're using such a high frequency for the WiMax service. The signal just bounces off the walls and doesn't penetrate well into the buildings, especially the concrete UF buildings.

Because I've been noticing that 4G is popping up in different areas without any sort of notification, I was thinking that we could all post here of areas that have 4G but have not been announced to the public.
I've noticed 4G in Norfolk VA in the Ghent area, and near Portsmouth Naval Hospital for starters.
Check http://www.clear.com/coverage for where 4G (WiMAX) access is available. It's not always publicised when new sites are implemented, but they will show up on the map.

I checked that map, it looks pretty good, but I'm not really sure, it is showing areas that should be active 4g locations, but I'm getting nothing in those areas... So really I guess what I was trying to get out of this thread was a place that people can post known active 4g (well at lest known to the poster) locations to help others know if 4g is active near them. A map is nice, but we all know that those mappings can definitely be off.

There is coverage here in Gurnee Illinois but its very spotty. It's funny the clearwire and sprint coverage map shows 4G in/near my house, but I can't connect to it until I drive around 5-6 Blocks then it pops up but soon as you go further down the street its gone.

I live in Roanoke, Va. And we don't have it and probably never will. T-mobile is the only on here with 4g and they have the worst coverage of the big 4...and they don't even have a store here...you have to go to wal-mart or radioshack to buy one of their phones...I hate Virginia...
Kalamazoo, MI has 1 tower near Western MI U campus....can connect to it for a 2nd near portage but it is very limited basically to the westside of town. But will be nice for Football games in the falls as it does cover the stadium.

I can't disagree about VA, I'm actually here from CA, and its like 2 different worlds, but just some advice, AT&T just bought T-mobile, sooooo, if you go with T-mobile, your service is going to get alot worse... All major (VZ, AT&T, T-Mobile) wireless carriers in Phoenix, AZ (5TH LARGEST CITY IN THE US) are 4G except Sprint. Only about 4 sq. mi of 4G in the whole metro/valley area. SAD!
Says that I am supposed to have coverage in NW Austin, TX but only get 1 bar or so.. and only if i'm outside. No coverage in buildings
Sprint 4g in Hampton Roads!
Yes, I live near W. Mercury Blvd. Near Jefferson Ave. in Southern Virginia (Newport News, Va.) and I get a pretty good 4G signal. But once I leave that area......let's say 1 to 2 miles is goes back to 3G. Something is going on in the area. Hopefully all will be online fully in the coming weeks!

I was looking at that last night and thinking, no matter how great the EVO x is my EVO still holds it's own. Since Michigan will be blanketed in LTE by 2014, I am going to wait, Sprint has great plans, but lightsquared drama has to negatively impact their LTE roll out.
And why buy a phone in 2012 when I can't use 4G until a year or 2 years later. I did that with EVO, and assumed a Verizon kind of roll out.
I really hope Sprint stays on track with LTE roll out and they may retain me otherwise VZW with unlimited data might get my business (yes if u try hard enough u can get it)
Sent from my Synergized Aggressive Lionfish Evo using the XDA app
Yea, it says they will be ready by 2014, but with no specific rollout dates for my area, Michigan, I will be switching to Verizon in the next few months, once they get a nest gen phone like the One X or something similar. Verizon has had working 4g for over a year in my area now. There's no way I'm waiting another 2 years to get it here, and have dial-up speed 3g in the meantime. I gave Sprint 12 years of my business, and I hate to leave, but in today's world data is everything, and I need that to be able to do my job.
With the announcement one the HTC EVO One for Sprint, I am puzzled as to how they decide what cities to start their rollout of LTE. San Antonio? Baltimore? Kansas City?
No New York, Los Angeles, Miami, Chicago, etc.
OK, so Houston and Dallas. Meh.
With an LTE iPhone possibly coming out later this year, how many iPhonies do they think will hang on waiting while both Verizon and AT&T (yuk) are offering LTE in the biggest markets?
Sure, they're saying just wait, but really, how many people have the discipline? I probably will, but only because returning to AT&T is not an option as far as I'm concerned, and I hear horror stories about big red nickle and dimeing their customers.
What incentive do I have to get the HTC EVO One when there won't be any LTE here in LA, while my old EVO can still use WiMax?
On an unrelated question: does anyone know if LTE phones automatically switch between 3G and LTE? One thing I always hated about WiMax is having to manually turn it on every time I want to use it!
Pretty sure LTE would require manual control just like WiMax.

Hey now! Some of use are awful excited that Dallas is on that list!
But seriously. I'm wondering if the Dallas choice was because of the AT&T headquarters and the fact that Sprint phones are getting MURDERED by att speeds. (At least where i'm at)
Nothing against Dallas. Texas is a great country.
I just think Sprint needs to make a big splash about LTE if they want to limit churn. Dan Hesse has done an outstanding job so far, imo. But if I were in charge of Sprint, I would make NY,and LA, among the first cities, just for PR purposes.
Even aliens know to blow up one of those two cities when they first invade Earth!

FIRST ROUND MARKETS (14):
First round markets have no preceding markets before them. NV OEM's will mobilize in these markets and begin deployment. These markets will deploy slowly as there is a significant learning curve to Network Vision. Most first round markets started between December 2011 and March 2012.

Second round markets start based on First Round markets completing before them. There is a lot of variability of when Second Round markets start, between June/July 2012 and December 2012. It will all depend on how quickly the First Round market deployments go. Some preliminary work is being done in advance in these Second Markets as well.
