Sprint just put out a press release announcing more markets to be upgraded to 4G this year.
With 27 markets already equipped with 4G and more being planned for this year, Sprint is fulfilling its promise to light up major metropolitan areas with speeds that are up to 10 times faster1 than 3G.
Newly announced markets that will see 4G in 2010 are Cincinnati, Cleveland, Los Angeles, Miami, Pittsburgh, Salt Lake City and St. Louis. Earlier this year Sprint announced that it planned to launch 4G in Boston, Denver, Kansas City, Houston, Minneapolis, New York, San Francisco and Washington, D.C., in 2010.

Same here. I won't buy into Clear as a "home and travel internet replacement" yet because it's quite expensive for just 6Mbit.
However, I'd love to have a WiMax phone
WiFi tether would mean no extra cost for WiMax on the go.
Cincinnati, Cleveland
what about the rest of us in the middle
Here in Austin, the cost of Clear for home and away is the same as ATT uverse home internet with the same speed. That being said, I don't use a laptop so, I'm pretty hyped about a wimax phone! Unfortunately, I have to wait till December for my upgrade
How about the ville? We have Churchill Downs... Doesn't that count for something?

Actually, their pricing isn't that bad, but they're going about it ass backwards. They're rolling out to major metropolitan areas where high speed, wireless Internet is already easy and cheap to come by.
In the town I live in, people are still paying $50 a month for a 512 kbit connection. If they were to put up a 4g tower here they'd sell several thousand units the first day they turned it on, not to mention taking phone business away from the only cell carrier that has decent coverage here but is WAY overpriced.
Sure, they wouldn't have the millions of potential subscribers like they do in large metro areas, but at least they'd be marketing to people who see the product as appealing.
Don't get me wrong, I do understand the appeal of large cities, but from a business perspective I know I'd personally have an easier time turning a profit with a thousand eager customers than a million who see my offering as a joke.

I couldn't agree more. Two low tech towns that I bet have half the number of users using data cards then Columbus. (I say this as I stare at the 3G indicator on my overdrive). Watch, they'll give it to Toledo and Youngstown before Columbus.
From what I have read, Sprint and Walmart have a deal to put up 4G towers on top of all there stores. Seems to me like just about everyone could have some decent coverage if they did all these first. Everyone has a wal mart around...except for maybe south florida. I don't think there is one any where near South Beach Miami.

Clearwire announced on Thursday that it has begun rolling out its 4G WiMAX service to seven new cities in four states. The lucky seven include Eugene, OR., Merced, CA., Visalia, CA., Yakima, WA., Tri-Cities, WA., Rochester, NY., and Syracuse, NY. Folks in these locales who are already rocking an HTC EVO 4G or an Overdrive 3G/4G mobile hotspot can sit back and enjoy their newly acquired 4G speeds. Those of you still sporting last year’s 3G technology now have a reason to jump on board the WiMAX bandwagon.

Just got it here in Richmond Va., unfortunately I just live 20 mins. south of Richmond in Chester . I do get 4g at work however

I've always had it in Philly. Honestly I would of not bought this phone if I didn't have 4g coverage. I'd feel pretty stupid paying $10 extra for nothing then
Congrats to all y'all that just got it. We've had it here in St. Louis since the Evo launch, but it just went official about a week or two ago. Gotta say, it's nice!
it's been showing up in my town lately.. near garfield, nj. it's a weak signal though.

They released in in Yakima and Tri-cities before Spokane....
I shake my tiny fist at you, Clearwire! It pains me to see people with ATT in my building getting 2.1mbps when I'm getting ~500kbps.
Get it out here in the suburbs of Chicago. Haven't had a chance to take it downtown yet, will try it when we hit Burnham Harbor this weekend. Will be honest, didn't look at the 4G coverage map before buying the phone ... wasn't really sure if it would bleed out here.

I'm kinda shocked at that too. I'm in Walla Walla and tried to get them to waive the fee since 4g isn't avail and probably wont be for a long time, they said within the next month or 2, we should have 4G here. Still, no love for Spokane?

T-Mobile announced more cities now with HSPA+ during the myTouch release. Here's the list of cities:
With its latest expansion, T-Mobile’s HSPA+ footprint now includes Biloxi and Gulfport, Miss.; Denver, Colo.; Huntsville, Ala.; Knoxville, Tenn.; Myrtle Beach, S.C.; Norfolk, Va.; Omaha, Neb.; Phoenix and Tucson, Ariz.; Salt Lake City, Utah; San Francisco, San Jose, Oakland and Sacramento, Calif.; and West Palm Beach, Fla. T-Mobile expects to reach 100 major metropolitan areas and 200 million people in 2010.

Personally, the fact that San Jose is getting is best news ever as I get my phone tomorrow. Hopefully T-Mo expands more, bringing the love to more people around this part of town. Chicago gets all the love all the time!

Definitely. Awesome city although I was admittedly hesitant to move to the hick-state initially. Great place to be in the tech business. Hopefully Google brings that lovely fiber here...
I actually am in Hazel Green so only get edge and 3G in certain parts, but most of my phone-using day is in Huntsville area. 3G leaked from Huntsville out to Hazel Green rather quickly and I hope it does the same with HSPA+... Actually, the first day I saw 3G symbol ever was within Hazel Green limits on my way to work with my new G1 one day...

Couldnt agree more with the fiber comment, this town(Huntsville) could definitely use it, especially considering the massive growth its experiencing right now.
Ive noticed the HSPA+ for about a week now, I used to get intermittant HSPA connections on my myTouch slide a few weeks back, but nothing solid, however in the last week I had nothing but HSPA connection no matter where I was at, including the freakin psuedo-bunker I work in, which I had problems even getting Edge in before.

Could definitely use the fiber boost. It's an extremely tech/research-oriented city. I understand the places where the work is being done already have commercial connections, but... just give me the fiber!

I went to the Tmobile store in fort union to play with the G2. The phone had some settings messed up so I couldn't access all the internet, but i could open google's home page and do a basic search. It was MUCH fast than my N1.
Norfolk in the house! I went to the Tmobile store on the 30th, when I received my phone, and the reps were surprised at two things:
I had the phone before them and the fact that the H was showing up in my device.
They concluded that the towers were upgraded, but they were just waiting to "flip the switch".

Bro, I respect your opinion and knowledge. I used many of your roms in the diamond days. Where I work, we lease land to some tower companys, three of these are Sprints. The Sprint field techs I have spoke with have no knowledge of any immediate 4g upgrades, and no sign of any upcoming tower work has been present. No underground service alert markings, nada. Our companys own Sprint rep told us back in June, we would have 4g within two months. Nope. I will only believe the 4g hype when I see a man-lift sitting at one of those sites, and Sprint techs working on it. BTW, my local area is home to around a quarter of a million in SoCal.

If I were you, I would go to Sprint.com and ask a rep via chat yourself. That way, if/when it's not "everywhere" by the end of the month, you may have a valid argument for some sort of credit to your account.

This makes me rage so hard. Yakima and Tri-Cities have 4G but they skipped the entire Spokane region and refuse to give out any sort of date to expect coverage.
From time to time, I flip on my 4G in a very small hope that the small city of Rome, Georgia with a population of about 30,000 will get 4G within the next few years. Today, I was a Starbucks having coffee with a friend and talking about 4G and how long we think it will take for Verizon or AT&T to get their 4G here. I've already dismissed Sprint ever getting it here because Sprint just closed their only store in town a month ago. Verizon and AT&T are the main providers here. So, I was telling them that 4G has to be turned on within the settings of the phone and demonstrated how to turn it on. I put the phone down and picked it up a few minutes later after receiving a text and I had to cover my mouth to prevent the very loud "WTF?!?!?!" that came out of my mouth as I noticed the 4G connected symbol in the status bar! What on Earth is 4G doing in this little town? Of course, I got online to see if I could find Rome listed on Sprint or Clearwire. It wasn't on Sprint, but sure enough, it was now listed on Clearwire as having 4G. It isn't listed as the super fast 4G area like Atlanta, but 4G nonetheless. I am getting 6.1 Mbps with one bar at home. I'd like to know when this network went up. And if it will stay. Anyone know where I could find some info? I chatted with Clearwire to see if they could tell me when it was activated, but they couldn't tell me. I'm going to tell everyone about it now. We have 4G before a lot of major cities... I'm super stoked!

Got a little 4G love in downtown Youngstown Ohio today for the first time. I attached a couple of images of the speed test results I got. Not the best speeds EVER but darn better then 3G. Thank You Sprint.

Wow, didnt expect 2 ppl from NEO on here. Anyways, I dont think sprint cares much for anyone not in the three C's. I really thought we would get wimax here in akron when CLE went live.
Y-town? Nice. That's my hometown. Been in VA for about a year now though.
I tried in Campbell and got connected and got an IP. Signal quality was poor and I was only able to get 822kbps down. I couldn't even web browse because I was losing signal.
I got home on the south side and couldn't even connect to 4G.
Will we receive a text message from Sprint or any other indication when 4G is fully live here?

From a business standpoint I wonder why Youngstown would get 4g before Akron. I lived in Youngstown for 4 years for college I'm not trying to trash it. If they were actually going to add 4g all the way along the turnpike I would understand that but considering clear is teetering on bankruptcy I don't figure they have the money for that. And as someone else pointed out Akron has a significantly larger population and likely a similar area to cover although I haven't looked that up.

Whole state sounds good to me but isn't happening anytime soon.
Honestly I see most metro areas of the state getting it soon. I am in Springfield which is in between Columbus & Dayton. Dayton doesn't have it yet, but Columbus does. I hope they build towers west instead of going straight to Dayton. They will probably have Dayton go live and then fill in between. I could never expect my dying city to get 4g before Dayton. Maybe Sprints big announcement is going to be live 4g everywhere. A lot of places have been popping up lately & a lot of them are smaller too.

They should hit all of the cities around universities first -- the younger generation are the ones using the data the most and thus the ones that need it.
Next up should be: Akron and Kent.

I was looking at that last night and thinking, no matter how great the EVO x is my EVO still holds it's own. Since Michigan will be blanketed in LTE by 2014, I am going to wait, Sprint has great plans, but lightsquared drama has to negatively impact their LTE roll out.
And why buy a phone in 2012 when I can't use 4G until a year or 2 years later. I did that with EVO, and assumed a Verizon kind of roll out.
I really hope Sprint stays on track with LTE roll out and they may retain me otherwise VZW with unlimited data might get my business (yes if u try hard enough u can get it)

Yea, it says they will be ready by 2014, but with no specific rollout dates for my area, Michigan, I will be switching to Verizon in the next few months, once they get a nest gen phone like the One X or something similar. Verizon has had working 4g for over a year in my area now. There's no way I'm waiting another 2 years to get it here, and have dial-up speed 3g in the meantime. I gave Sprint 12 years of my business, and I hate to leave, but in today's world data is everything, and I need that to be able to do my job.
With the announcement one the HTC EVO One for Sprint, I am puzzled as to how they decide what cities to start their rollout of LTE. San Antonio? Baltimore? Kansas City?
No New York, Los Angeles, Miami, Chicago, etc.
OK, so Houston and Dallas. Meh.
With an LTE iPhone possibly coming out later this year, how many iPhonies do they think will hang on waiting while both Verizon and AT&T (yuk) are offering LTE in the biggest markets?
Sure, they're saying just wait, but really, how many people have the discipline? I probably will, but only because returning to AT&T is not an option as far as I'm concerned, and I hear horror stories about big red nickle and dimeing their customers.
What incentive do I have to get the HTC EVO One when there won't be any LTE here in LA, while my old EVO can still use WiMax?
On an unrelated question: does anyone know if LTE phones automatically switch between 3G and LTE? One thing I always hated about WiMax is having to manually turn it on every time I want to use it!
Pretty sure LTE would require manual control just like WiMax.

Hey now! Some of use are awful excited that Dallas is on that list!
But seriously. I'm wondering if the Dallas choice was because of the AT&T headquarters and the fact that Sprint phones are getting MURDERED by att speeds. (At least where i'm at)
Nothing against Dallas. Texas is a great country.
I just think Sprint needs to make a big splash about LTE if they want to limit churn. Dan Hesse has done an outstanding job so far, imo. But if I were in charge of Sprint, I would make NY,and LA, among the first cities, just for PR purposes.
Even aliens know to blow up one of those two cities when they first invade Earth!

At&t damn sure will drop a call where I am at if it even goes through but those damn internet speeds are damn lovely.... I hate them for that! LOL
I live in Overland Park. The reason it might be coming to the Kansas City area is because the world headquarters is located in Overland Park, KS? Just a guess lol. (btw, KS has more than tumbleweed in the streets lol)
Am I the only one who thinks the state outlines on this map are messed up?

It's the larger states they don't have much coverage in, so they generalize more.
I'm personally going to switch to the new Evo when it comes out. LTE IN JERSEY AND PHILLY YEA! FIRST PICKS.

Wimax does automatically switch, as long as you leave the 4g radio on all the time - which kills batt like a mofo

FIRST ROUND MARKETS (14):
First round markets have no preceding markets before them. NV OEM's will mobilize in these markets and begin deployment. These markets will deploy slowly as there is a significant learning curve to Network Vision. Most first round markets started between December 2011 and March 2012.

SECOND ROUND MARKETS (27):
Second round markets start based on First Round markets completing before them. There is a lot of variability of when Second Round markets start, between June/July 2012 and December 2012. It will all depend on how quickly the First Round market deployments go. Some preliminary work is being done in advance in these Second Markets as well. It's possible that if delays begin to occur in the First Round markets, NV OEM's may hire up additional subcontractors and get some key Second Round markets going. Stay tuned to S4GRU.com for updates.

I also heard that maybe just maybe the Note may be coming over as well the HTC One... Sprint may be stepping there game up.. After reading up on the new HTC phone I may be coming back as long as though LTE speeds kick in like they should in my area...
Michigan part of the 2nd wave and no Ohio, c'mon man! This is why I hate Ohio, can't wait to move..LOL

I don't know about the rest of you, but forget LTE coverage -- I'm just waiting for Sprint to get regular coverage on the tower that's been my in my neighborhood like they promised (and their coverage map showed) for the last 3 years!
I have found the Wimax coverage in Florida to be more than adequate. No, I can't get it at my house, but I have WiFi there. But just about everywhere else when I'm traveling or in even small local cities, I get Wimax.
Sprint is about two years behind on LTE. Not very enticing to stay with them after my contract is up in the Fall. The only reason why I didn't demand early contract termination is because I like my EVO 4G phone and don't feel like spending another $300 on a new Verizon phone at the moment.
Nah Verizons, and att switches. So sprints will prob
