I discussed this here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=713392&page=7
If you are an Exchange Push user on Froyo experiencing significant battery drain and frequent if not constant 3G connection I found that you must turn Push Off and then back On.
This resolved the rapid battery drain and constant 3G connection issue I experienced. Just for your information.
I think this was a result of the Update rather than Fresh Install, it accompanied many settings I had to re-do.
Exchange - I take it back. Resetting exchange did not fix my issue. On Eclair, the push email would not keep the network always connected. On Froyo exchange push is running the CPU at 20% constantly and keeping 3G connection going.
Not sure how to stop that, but it only occurs when I turn on Push. And this definitely was not here before. Thanks to this my battery goes from Full to gone in a few hours. I have since turned off push email.

This happened periodically on Eclair for me as well - just "clear data" for the email app and set the exchange server up again. Seems to fix it when it creeps up from time to time.
On a side note battery life w/push on Froyo has been better so far. With 2 push accounts I am now losing < 1% / hr when sitting idle (overnight). On Eclair it was just shy of 2% so this was a nice improvement.
I have now done a full factory restore and reinput the Exchange Push account information.
It is still at 17% CPU usage and keeps the 3G connection on constantly.
This simply did not happen before, and is draining my battery rapidly.
Update:
As if to prove my point again, once I set the email from Push to Pull every 15 minutes the CPU load dropped down to 0% and the 3G connection stopped cycling. Not sure why this is happening. Is anyone else noticing that Push keeps 3G constantly active and phone runs really hot?
SO FRUSTRATED!
Please someone else tell me they are experiencing this with Froyo Exchange.
I am not able to stop exchange from cycling 3G and Email runs a huge CPU percentage and the phone heats up continually until the battery dies.
Is anyone else on exchange seeing this problem????
Hello All -
I know I continue to post on this but I am really hoping some of you that are smarter than me can help me out.
On 2.1 - Exchange would get can email, my 3G arrows would cycle, the email would show up. That is all.
On 2.2 - Exchange does not get email, 3G arrows ALWAYS cycle and the cpu is running constantly. The phone last night was over 100 degrees.
To experiment, I installed Touchdown. Exchange works perfectly. No 3G or CPU issues. It does not constantly sync.
A few items I noticed:
1) SyncManager for Email is the culprit and causing the problems
2) My corporate email is ActiveSync or MS Exchange 2007
3) I have read elsewhere that this is Exchange constantly trying to check the server and it gets stuck in a loop.
Please friends, this is going to cause me to have to give up my phone. I dont want that. I want my native Exchange to work. Any ideas at all?
I'm having another issue (and it's being tracked on android official support board)..
Whenever I use PUSH for exchange, it works fine. Yeah it keeps connection alive, but doesn't really use the battery that much.
However, if I switch from PUSH to some interval (5, 10 minutes, etc), sync manager gets stuck. It'll eat up 50% CPU CONSTANTLY until battery is dead. Switching back to PUSH fixes it immediately.
Google assigned an engineer to this problem, but nothing yet.

Do you have the link to the tracking of this? I think this is the same thing happening to me, SyncManager getting stuck and just running up the process until the phone dies.

Hmm.. strange, I can't find it now.. Last time I checked it, first 2.2 was released.
Maybe it's fixed and closed now? I've enabled 10-minute sync in my exchange, I'll see if it still gets stuck in FRF82.
I wonder if any smart network Dev out there can tell us why SyncManager is getting stuck trying to work with our Exchange Servers?
Ok Friends Help me out with this.
I installed OS Monitor.
With my exchange running it says:
"07/01/2010 13:07:27 [DEBUG]
NativeCrypto915860
Freeing Open SSL session"
07/01/2010 13:07:51 [DEBUG]
dalvikvm915860

bytes in 71ms
It repeats the OpenSSL ever second or less and the GC every 6 seconds. It never stops.

Bump....installed FRF91, no fix.
Anyone know what is going on with this? Is this a server or OS issue? Could it be a bad install somewhere?

After much hassle I think my issue now has to do with my IT having self-signed certificates rather than purchasing them. This means they would have to update it to work with whatever Froyo did in exchange security. I think this is why it works initially then goes into a loop of OpenSSL attempts.
This is my only guessing from half-truths and limited understanding of the series of tubes.
I would really appreciate anyone out that understands this stuff chiming in on what is going on?
http://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=9455
got a google code issue going in case anyone else runs up against this openssl infinite loop.
I am having both issues. When I use push, the phone stays warm and the battery drains in a few hours. If I switch from push to poll, no improvement - but if I reboot with poll setting, it works fine.
My company uses Active Sync with Exchange 2003 and I doubt we would use self-signed certs.
By the way I am running 2.2 on a G1 with Cyanogen ROM.
I have a funny issue with my exchange. When i get a new mail, i get a notification on my N1. But even after i have read that email on my PC.The notification doesnt go away .... and when i check my phone after some time i think i have recieved a new email but its only notification of old one .... is there a workaround for that guys ?
Cheers
Nice thread hijack
I have an Exchange 2010 server setup with a non-trusted cert from CAcert.org and don't have that issue using Push on Froyo.
I assume you enabled the option "Accept all SSL certificates" when configuring the account?
I did in fact "accept all" and I have been working with many google developers as of last week to figure out what is going on.
It is not actually IT, it seems it is an OS issue as more and more people are seeing this issue come up.
P.S. to the notification comment above, that is normal. dont hijack my thread.

Hi All,
I have been experiencing poor battery life with my N1 - until I stumbled across the issue.
Now I am trying to figure out how to fix the issue.
Basically; I have 3 email accounts setup (1 push to corporate exchange and 2 pop3 accounts).
What I have noticed is that randomly the email accounts will fail to receive emails and when going into the email app the loading circle (or whatever it is called) just spins and spins indefintely. This obviously results in usage of the phone (i.e. not sleeping) and the phone heats up and battery goes down v.quickly.
Now, I know I have sufficient network coverage as I am able to surf and use other network required programs - so it does not appear to be due to not being able to get a data connection.
Has anyone come across this issue before?
yeah I have this issue too... its pretty annoying.
Ok thats comforting...sort of. Atleast it is not specific to me then. Sounds like a bug?
What do you do about it?
i have a similar issue...my pop mail...just wont receive email...it looks, and stops...but no email...its not draining my batt btw
Slightly different in that mine looks and looks and looks and just keeps doing so - until it has drained by battery as best it can. Most of the time I have realised as the phone gets hot due to not sleeping. So I can kill it off.
Quite annoying however. As email is fundamental program with these types of phones.
Is there somewhere on Googles site where we I can inform them of this issue?
Normally I get my emails instantly, but I've been noticing that when my phone sleeps for a while I will not get my email instantly. For example, I just check my email on my computer and noticed that I got an email almost 30 minutes ago, so I checked my EVO (woke it up after sleeping for an hour or so), and I got the email a few minutes later. I've also noticed that sometimes after waking up from sleep mode I won't have a data connection for a minute or so. I turned on wifi right now, and I just got a test email instantly. Thoughts?
That sounds like a ****ty problem. Please keep us updated.
Sometimes task killing gmail causes all sorts of notification issues. Makes sure a task killer or something similar isn't closing it.
Not sure on the data loss on wake up that could be a bug or defective radio. Obviously if there is no data connection you won't get the email. You might have a bad unit as we haven't heard anyone else complain and with a few thousand units out there a bug like that would likely be a big issue.

I don't use a task killer, so that isn't the issue. I actually just got an email on time just now without touching my phone for a while, so maybe it was just some weird bug. I'm still going to keep checking this out, though.

I have heard from those who tried to activate the Google I/O versions to their old numbers have been told they might experience problems because the EVO is not officially recognized on the Sprint network until the 4th.
Could this be related. I mean even if you don't port your number the EVO is still operating on a system that does not know it is an evo.

I'm pretty sure this was a Google thing more than a EVO thing. I was having similar issues with my iPhone.
I have this problem on and off, but I really think it's just the data connection to the phone.
If I send myself a gmail, or google voice, it sometimes gets delayed, sometimes comes instantly.
I just tried it right now in a highrise in downtown los angeles (no data issues) and an email took about two minutes to show up on the phone (after it showed up in my inbox).
There were issues with gmail push last night. Seems fine now.
I had a problem with the stock EMail app.
It stuck at 100% CPU load, the phones back was hot and the battery lost ~70% in half an hour.
I can't understand how this could happen, the app is set to check both my EMail accounts every hour and there has been nothing out of the ordinary (no big attachements or so on).
Anyone else had this problem? Any solutions? Should I use a 3rd party app for EMails?

It happened to me three days ago Using OS Monitor, I only showed 34% usage, but this time, Android System Monitor acknowledged 100% usage, but was unable to account for where it was being used. where did you see it stucks at 100 % , it sometimes shows wrong , ;
you can also check ur email mobile or 3rd party app or reboot ur device you can also fallow these steps , maybe it helps you.
go into "Settings...Voice input and output", and, if the Eyes Free TTS engine available, the default TTS is not set and check the box to have the native TTS as the default, and checked the box for "Always use my settings".
I saw it in the Samsung Task Manager. I think it showed correct because also the phone's back became very hot.
But, fortunately, this never happened again until now. The battery life is terrible after all, but the EMail app seems to be fine
I have a similar problem if I'm not using the standard Samsung keyboard.
It's a bit of a pain in the arse as I have to remember to swap keyboards if I decide I need to reply to something. If I forget the phone locks up and the battery drains very quickly.
I've seen other posts with same problem. Wouldn't be so awkward if the standard keyboard wasn't so useless.
I binned the stock samsung email app, and use the 2.3.4 vanilla email app
I'm having major problems with the Mail app too - consistently high CPU usage, short battery life, back of phone warm to touch and Mail showing as the top battery hog (& CPU hog in Watchdog). Not impressed!
High CPU usage and email app gets stuck
I have the same issue. When I am in the email app it just gets stuck. This is crazy. I switched out from a HTC EVO 4g to Samsung Galaxy so I could have more ROM. I hope I don't regret it. Tell me if you find a solution.
I had the same issue on my SGS II and now my Note. I finally figured out it started after I installed Viber. I uninstalled Viber and the issue went away.
Does anyone else with this issue have Viber installed?
I had this problem only once yesterday - picked up my phone to answer a call and it was very hot. I can't think it was a co-incidence that earlier that day I had enabled Contacts sync with Exchange. Whatever the issue was it has gone away by itself. The only other factor worth mentioning is I was in a supermarket with Free WiFi - but it only works after you click through their homepage. Previously I seen this cause background apps using data to constantly stall due to the HTTP redirect they encounter.
Hello,
Since yesterday, HD2 back becomes very hot for no reason (no new apps installed for many months) and battery is drained within 4-5 hours (from 100%).
Same when I restart the phone. However, it randomly fixes itself for no reason too.
I also can't wake up the phone just by pressing HANG UP key, I have to HOLD IT for 5 seconds for screen to highlight.
Any ideas?
Official 3.14 ROM
Are you using a googlemail account, if so delete it and reboot the phone. remove battery for 10 secs.
Wow, you are a hero. Yes, I do.
Is this a known bug? Any fixes?
Do I just re-add account then?
Excellent, worked for me to.
Had the same problem with my HD, deleted the Gmail account now, and I'll se if it helps ... the only thing that maybe is wrong (people ask why Gmail not something else) is maybe related to Gmail's new priority inbox thing, maybe it makes extra stress on the phone to process the mail ... I know a lot of people already had this feature, but in my case, my Gmail Inbox got the priority thing just before the HD2 started acting up, so that's why I'm assuming it's somehow related to all of this ... then again, maybe just a coincidence that doesn't have anything to do with it ... I think it's too early for speculations ...

Welcome and a helpfull first post
Don't get the idea that I don't have anything better to do and just type here, but here's and update ... The phone is cooling down, the battery life holds normally, and you can turn on the phone from standby by pressing any button, like you used to before (some people reported that you could only turn it back from standby by long pressing the power button, myself included)
I also had this problem and someone on the Tmobile forum said XDA suggested to delete the Gmail accounts. This was my response on the other forum:
"Deleted all Gmail email accounts I had on my phone. I can verify that this corrected the problem and my HD2 is now working normally.
This is definitely not a good permanent solution because I use multiple gmail accounts. I also noted that when I did have my Gmail accounts on my phone, it would hang when trying to communicate with google servers. If you went to inbox, and looked at the status message at the bottom of the screen. It would hang at like "Connecting" or "Disconnecting"."
Also of note; this problem just started happening in the last few days and I've had my HD2 with multiple gmail accounts setup since release.
First-time poster...
We've done the same thing (deleted our Gmail accounts). After the battery recharges - it went completely dead after only 6 hours off the charger - we'll see if/how it works
Mike
Thanks for posting the gmail issue and fix. I had been having the same issue since Thursday night, and was almost ready to call T-Mobile to try to get a replacement, but saw the post here just by chance. So far it is working the way it was before, so it's much better. I even tried a hard reset(after a backup, of course), but had gone through and setup all of my stuff again right away, so I was still having the issue.
T-Mobile is now listing this as a known issue - last night when I called, they weren't so you can imagine the number of calls they've received already. My advice: if you are a T-Mobile customer and haven't reported this issue, please do. The more they see it is affecting, maybe the quicker they'll get a resolution for it.
Mike
I've had the exact same issue with my HD2 since Thursday evening. I just found this thread about Gmail and have deleted my Gmail account from the phone's e-mail app. Crossing my fingers to see if that fixes it.
I have a trouble ticket open with HTC regarding the issue and have made them aware of the possible Gmail interaction problem. The tech helping me said he will explore it and also that "GMail did recently perform a server side security change". Hopefully HTC and Google get their heads together and figure out what is going on.

Amen to that! Permanently leaving Gmail off my phone is not an acceptable option!

euro hd2
Also same situation with euro version HD2.
Someone on the HD2 Facebook page is reporting that if you go into Task Manager, the email client is using 80%-90% of the CPU. No wonder it's getting warm...
Great. And I was prepared to do an HR in the morning because of this. Hope there will be an permanent solution for this soon.
Just to touch base... since deleting the Gmail account and recharging the phone, it has worked flawlessly. A little too late to test the battery life (I won't be up near that late) but I'll let y'all know tomorrow.
I am a super noob when it comes to this my brother is having this problem how do you delete gmail from the HD2 sorry but I'm an android guy trying to help a windows
After removing my Gmail account from the phone it seems to be back to normal. Hopefully they find a fix soon.

Is this only an IMAP issue as I have 3 gmail accounts (POP3) on my T-Mob HD2 & they are all working fine without bugging the HD2.
Hi guys, I have setup my corporate Exchange mailbox using the built in application.
However, it works VERY poorly (settings set to Push) - sometimes the widget (or alerts for that matter) wont display new mail for HOURS! Until I manually go into the Mail application, and a minute later suddenly I get all the emails, and 4 emails I've been trying to 'share' (Notes) have been all sent at once.
Any idea how to fix this? or what to use instead?
On my old Dell Streak, using the default program, I had instant alerts on emails! sometimes even before Outlook had a popup!
this is annoying to no end..
I'm not sure if you're organization sets device security, but mine required a passcode to be set on my device if I used my Exchange account. For whatever reason I was still able to use the pattern lock but I noticed the same delays that you did. On a whim I set it to a numeric lock and all of a sudden my mail decided to push properly.

ok well, I tried this - 10 mins ago someone sent email (I see it on outlook already) - yet nothing on the Note (I switched to numeric lock hours ago), so must be something else... any ideas?
wifi is connected, and gmail is getting updates without issues.
I have this problem, too, and I've seen several others post about it as well. It's quite frustrating. Sometimes it works instantly and sometimes it'll go a couple hours without sending/receiving. Some people think it's a push bug and say changing to polling fixes it, but it didn't for me. I set it to 15 minutes and I still get the same problem with delays. It's really frustrating. I'm going to see if it's an app issue by installing another email client such as K9 or Touchdown.
Also, I wonder if it's a connectivity problem; I've been having weird issues; I work from home a lot so I'm here a lot in my wifi, and it seems sometimes my phone won't use the cellular network. I turn my phone off, it goes into deep sleep and turns wifi off, then I won't get any emails until something else wakes my phone, turning wifi back on. Like the email client can't or won't wake the phone when needed. I'm going to start a post about this tomorrow.

My wifi also disconnects sometimes if the phone is idle I don't know why.
That happens at home, it does not switch to 3G as I don't have any 3G plan atm at all (and its disabled in settings anyway).
However the mail push issue is prevalent even when I use the phone and its active - mails still don't arrive! even if I click refresh on the widget itself, no new mails until I launch the Mail application!
Ok well, this has gotten worse.
My limit is when I show up for a meeting only to find out 15 mins ago a postpone email was sent.
I've mailed Samsung support, hopefully will get an answer to resolve the issue - will update when I hear something back.
Anyone else experiences the same problem? please post here...
Also anyone who solved it
I had the same issue as well,So i deleted my Exchange account started all over again from scratch,on the set up i chose all the options I needed, now it works as it should,so what I have noticed:
1-After the setup is complete,if you go to the Account Settings and start to fiddle with the settings that seems to upset the push funtion ,except changing the notification sound didnt do any harm.
2-When I assign my custom Notification tone it also seems to upset the Push funtionality(but I am not 100% sure of this one yet.)
