Newbie question - I had installed unRevoked last week on my stock EVO to try out the wi-fi tether app. My device does not seem to have recieved the update today. Shouldn't I be able to force it through Settings --> System Updates --> HTC Software update ??
Or does the fact that I have unRevoked block it?
I tried uninstalling unRevoked, but it still looks like I can't force the update?
Any ideas?
You will loose root if you apply it.
https://twitter.com/unrevoked
Worse yet if you accidentally apply twice you brick your phone.
Can't get the update?
Thanks - I was less worried about not being able to unRevoke - what has me worried is I can't seem to force the update and I haven't gotten any message that it's available?
I think it is a rollout update. Wait it out.
a question
I've been following the 'how to gain root access after OTA' thread and have a question, but they don't want people posting anything not DIRECTLY RELATED to hacking after OTA there anymore. So, I will try this question here. Here goes :
I have NOT done the 1.47.651 June 29 OTA update, I keep refusing it. My Evo is essentially stock (no rooting, no unrevoked, etc. ) I would like to know if I can run unrevoked since I haven't done the OTA. also, would like to know if I can do the OTA and STILL run unrevoked. Or do I need unrevoked2?
I've been to unrevoked Twitter page and unrevoked docu.wiki and see some information, (but not enough for someone new to Android like myself), and no way to ask/post questions directly. So, I am trying here. My main interest isn't even so much root, it's that I want to be able to tether via USB without having to use extra software like PDAnet.
Any help or a point in the right direction, much thanks.

You need to use unrevoked2 and use their modified OTA which will give you the benefits and maintain root. If you install the official OTA at any point, you will lose the ability to root, period (until someone figures out a new way to do it )

Thank you. You even broke it into separate questions. last clarification, I promise: with no OTA I CAN use unrevoked1 and that doesn't break 4G/not what's being blamed for breaking 4G?
I'm not too concerned with most of the root features, I just wanna be able to tether, so I'm thinking unrevoked1 would be good enough for me, (if It's not what's responsible for breaking 4G on non-updated devices)
Thanks again.

Just wondering that the process is for future updates from Sprint/HTC on our rooted phones? If we update do we lose root access? Do the updates have to be hacked first?
On a side note it was just posted that an update is very close in the Sprint Hero forum.
http://community.sprint.com/baw/thread/24346?tstart=0
Most likely the new updates will fix the vulnerability that gave us root...then we'll be like the GSM Hero brothers and sisters and have to downgrade to root and use a custom ROM to get the new features.
Now I say "most likely" because they might do it in such a way to not break root access, but there's no guarantee.

Most likely is correct. Here's the thing though. All we need to do is a get a dump of the rom when the update is released and we can package it in such a way as to not lose root. But whatever you do, do not update your phone. Now, usually OTAs are automatic so I removed any apks in the system directory that has to do with update. I don't know if that will help or not but it didnt hurt me yet.
Interesting, had no idea that OTA updates were automatic. What other apk's did you delete beyond Sprint_App_Updater? (I actually left that one alone for updating the voicemail...might just rm to be safe.)

That's interesting. With so many people complaining about OTA updates, it is actually more beneficial for us to be able to download and do manual updates. I would hope that Sprint gives us the option to decline an OTA update, last I heard they were holding off on them because of the legal implications that might arise if somebody needs to access their phone in an emergency situation and the phone is updating
Assuming it's OTA and automatic - is there still usually user-intervention involved? IE, will the phone pop up a 'yo dawg, we herd you like updates, so we got you some updates for your updates' with a nice little cancel button? Or will it be more like 'updating phone now, you lose!'?
It's probably a moot question since nobody's seen it happen on this phone yet, but I have to imagine it'll be similar to other OTA's on previous androids.
You can turn on and off what you want OTA to do

It will probably be the former...asking you if you'd like to update now. I can't imagine them doing it like they did on the Palm Pre (Update now...or choose later and we'll just operate in the background and force it down your throat later).
This is another good reason to use a custom ROM...most of them disable this (or use their OWN OTA updater that is a bit more polite )
I've been hesitant on the MoDaCo ROM so far as I'd pretty much made the changes I was after already, any idea if MoDaCo has removed the Sprint updaters?

Will Unlocking + ROOTing my Nexus One prevent me from recieving future OTA updates from Google or no?
If you have a rooted G1 (reading your sig) wouldn't the answer be self explanatory?

Did you even read my question?
What does my Sig have to do with my question?
I have a Nexus One and I don't want to miss future updates, such as "Adobe Flash" which is a proprietary app and I don't want to miss out.
If you install ROMs, I assumed you would know that you cannot receive OTA updates anymore. Which I'm sure you do. I don't know personally if rooting your phone, and still using the stock system will disable you from receiving OTA updates. So I'm not of use here. Don't know why I posted here myself lol. Thanks for the harshly toned text ._.

i'm also interested in this question. i would like to root my n1, but i would also like to receive OTA updates from google. i don't plan on installing a custom ROM, just use stock and root for the purpose of wifi tether and a few other root apps. anyone?
I am wondering this as well. I installed the bacon addon from cyanogen and don't want to screw myself out of the ota updates.
Thanks.
You can't have everything people. Pick one. If you need to revert back, I wrote a tutorial.
Chances are you are going to see the updates here first. You guys should know that already unless you are one of those people that come in here, download an update and leave for a few months and recheck to see if there are any other updates.

Sorry, I'm not referring to running a custom ROM. I just want to know if i unlock and ROOT but, keep the original ROM, will I still get the OTA updates or no? So, if anyone knows, I'd gratefully appreciate it.
As far as I understand, as long as you're using the stock, signed Nexus One ROM, nothing would change that would prevent you from receiving OTA updates.
I'm not positive.
The reason custom ROMs do not get OTA updates is because they have the files for them removed, and in the case of the G1, the partition used for doing those is removed if you have the DangerSPL.
Simply rooting and keeping stock should allow you to OTA update still no problem, but like was already pointed out, the updates will be on here befor they are released OTA, and a good cooked ROM is 10times better than the stock.

Why does this matter??????????????
If you rooted, you'd get the OTA updates faster than OTA people!!!!!!!!!!!
I have a 100% stock, un-rooted N1. I didn't get the OTA update within the first day, so I did it manually anyway.
What is the point of fearing that you'll miss out on OTA updates??? With root, that should be your *LAST* concern.
BTW guaranteed you will get Flash sooner with a rooted phone than without!
These threads make no sense whatsoever.
The update is now ready. Downloading now!!
Yep! Its official.
me too me too i'm installing it!
its prolly the same as the manual update
It has a different build number.
My wifes phone that isn't rooted picked up the update but my rooted phone won't. Did they find a way to keep rooted users from getting the update?
If you're rooted, or want to root in the future, DO NOT INSTALL THIS UPDATE.
When people say it removes root, that is an understatement. It also PREVENTS ROOT in the future!
Until someone hacks the release to re-allow root, you won't be able to root it ever. That is of course, assuming that it can even be done.
So unless you never want to root, avoid it.
If you installed the "pre-release" version don't install this either, I believe HTC is working on a fix for those who applied the update from last Friday.
Just wanted to say I have the manual update, tried to reset with RUU, and it failed, rebooting it back to my home screen...........****

The latest 3.2.1 update is pissing me off, I figured I'd do it, then re-root and -enable adhoc support, which is all I care about as far as needing root for. Now I realize the root for the latest will cause me to reload the entire setup/apps and think it sucks.
So, what is so dang important in these updates to start with?
It was up to you whether you applied the OTA update. You didn't have to. Caveat Emptor!
That wasn't addressing the question asked.

The question seemed rhetorical coming from someone that took a 3.2.1 update expecting to maintain root.
Next time use this to maintain root through OTA:

The question was not rhetorical. I did not mean to allow it to update, it was done by accident when clearing notifications.
Thanks for the link, if it works I'll do it.

Heh, I feel your pain, but I think you're overlooking the bigger picture.
If you're already on these forums, and have rooted your device, OTA's are a bit of a non-issue. (personally I think they're over-rated) Grab a custom rom and have at 'er.
Also reloading setups/apps is a pain in the arse but you'll likely have heard a dozen times or more to use TitaniumBackup, it does help so you don't have to redownload all of your apps after an update, or rooting, or installing a custom rom.
Hi everyone. I rooted a friend/customer's Droid Incredible that came with 2.3 because he wanted to be able to tether wirelessly. This is essentially the ONLY thing he cares about. He is not a techie and is NOT a tinkerer.
I performed the downgrade (to 2.2) and root of his phone the loooong way (ADB, ZergRush, and unrevoked) and successfully got Wifi Tether to work. It's precisely how he wants his phone.
The problem is that now Verizon wants to push the 2.3 update on his phone. I am assuming that this will kill his root and superuser permissions. Once the phone is rooted on 2.2, what is my best option here? I would assume that he doesn't want to throw any wacky roms on there, but I know he doesn't want to get that "Would you like to update?" screen 10x a day.
Should I have him run the update?
Is there a way to disable the update?
Any ideas? Thanks in advance, everyone!

Have you obtained s-off? Your best bet would be to get s-off if your not already and then flash one of the stock based roms built from the newest ota ( stock+, wildstangs 4.08.605.2, touch of blue ), and then set up wifi tether on it. Also you can edit epst settings on a non rooted (or rooted) phone to allow use of the stock wifi hotspot app for free.
At this point, since the phone works exactly how he wants it, I'd prefer to disable the update. Is there a way to make it shaddup?
