want to disable edge/3g but still able to receive MMS. researched around and tried juicedefender and toggle data widget but i dont think either works.
do these two work? if so, how do i enable it? or how do i check if it is working? sorry for being a noob. just got this phone 2 days ago.
Search the market for: "show and switch 2g/3g" and "toggle data widget" and install them.
- "show and switch 2g/3g" brings you a shortcut to the system settigs, where you can toggle between 2G / 3G / both.
- "toggle data widget" brings you a button to activate / deactivate data connection at all. On first start, you can set it to "leave MMS available".
Hi - You can't disable data and still keep MMS - MMS transmits and receives over a data connection.. 2G/ Edge/ 3G... you can switch to GSM only (2g/Edge) but that's as cut down you can get without switching it off altogether.

Toggle Data Widget does exactly do that
There are usually two APNs.
One for Internet and one for MMS.
The MMS APN remains active, while the common connection is shut down.

I suppose it depends what the op is trying to achieve.. OP.. what are you trying to achieve with this? what do you want to prevent by disabling data?

I'm on Vodafone and I have different Internet connections for MMS and Internet (maybe all operators do the same, I don't know).
Right now, my 3G / HSDPA connection is almost always on. I don't know why, because I only set the e-mail to auto-check each hour, but after that the connection remains on until I shut it down manually or I connect the phone to the USB cable.
Every time I receive a MMS I get a notification for a few seconds asking me if it should disconnect the active connection to get on the MMS connection. Then I have to press Menu, then Yes.
Is there a way to give this MMS a higher priority to automatically download my MMS, then disconnect? Or to automatically disconnect 3G / HSDPA connection when it's not in use?

Just set your Internet connection to download MMS too.
MESSAGES -> MENU -> MMS OPTIONS -> SERVERS
There chose your MMS server
Then CONNECT VIA -> set your internet connection.
Nope, it didn't work that way. I tried with "The Internet" and also with my Internet data settings, but it won't download the MMS - just pop up an error that it can't download the message. Only "Vodafone MMS" works in "Connect via".
So the question stands. Maybe there's a way to automatically disconnect from 3G when no apps are using Internet. I can't believe that MS were such idiots when they designed this operating system...
You can use Advanced Config tool to close 3G session on idle, thanks to Menu > More Parameters > Connexions ...

Strange. My internet connection "live!" manages to download my MMS too.
Sorry that I could not help you.
I also have a "Live" profile, but I use one called "Mobile Internet" because "Live" has some ports blocked (for e-mail and other stuff). 10x for the help anyway.
I will try the advanced config method.

Thank you so much! It worked for me.
Thanks mate for such a simple fix. Having to always answer yes or no was a pain in the arse.

No, it's not. At least not for the ROMs based on R2A I've been using.
Had to change my MMS connection to "live!" in every ROM so far.

Where exactly can one find this? How do you get to Messages?
I am going to the USA later this week and don't want to get stung with huge data roaming charges. Is there any way to force data to stay off, with an option to use wifi if needed? I used to use a program on my windows mobile called NODATA...
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA App
Try this:
1. Type *#*#4636#*#* on your dial pad
2. Select "Phone Information"
3. Press "Menu" soft key
4. Select "More"
5. Select "Disable Data on Boot"
6. Reboot
Now data should be disabled (you won't see E/3G icons in the notification bar) and you can use WiFi whenever you want.
you can use my app "data on demand" for that (in the market). i would also recommend turning settings->wireless and network->mobile networks->data roaming OFF! this always worked for me!
I was just going to post the same thing...
Don't anybof the standard system settings provide the functionality to do the same? e.g. limit to 2g only and/or turning off data updates and/or data roaming etc. ?
Will check the app out though... If you do the keypad option, how do you then reenable or does it just come back on with a reboot meaning you have to do it each time you turn the phone on...?

Setting 2G only wouldn't stop data use, only high-speed data (though that would curtail the rate at which you can accumulate it). There is a setting to not use data while roaming, which should work, though entering incorrect data in the APN settings as I think these programs do would work too.

Settings->Wireless and Network->Mobile Networks->Uncheck Data roaming
That will disable any data use on networks other than your home-network! No other settings/configs are necessary!

Good. That's what I was hoping for/assumed it may do.
this topic should be stickied
Install APNdroid. You can place a widget on the homescreen to turn on, off APNs:

Thanks guys, much appreciated!

I was wondering this also as i am due to go away, but i still want to send and receive MMS (as it is included in my allowance) whilst away. So the question is, if i choose not to have data whilst roaming will this also stop MMS as this is also data? I have a suspicion that it would, so, would the only other option be to just put some bogus APN settings in for internet but keep my MMS settings as it should be? Any ideas? Thanks a lot.
Don't know why people are going into this vast overkill....
Just go into your settings, wireless networks, ensure "Enable data while roaming" is unchecked. In fact, it will be unchecked by default, at least in the Bell rom.
This setting works perfectly (I just went to the US this past weekend), so i see no reason to screw around with the APN or reboot the phone or install other hacky apps. If this box is unchecked the instant you switch to roaming your data is disabled.
Hi,
I have a small problem, when i receive an mms with the mobile data off and after i put it on the message just says "Transfering" and i'm never able to see it?
Any fix ? Without being all day with data on..
Thanks
same for me, in italy with vodafone..
Guess this is the same everywhere ....
I have another problem with the mms app ... every time i recive a mms with a photo taken from a iPhone and i want to view it it FC`s
Tho i can recive & view pisc from any other device
Same here in slovenia simobil (vodafone) tried different apn setting like emptying everything except apn url and with proxy, username password...still doesn't work. Says sending/reciving.

Are you using the power butoon to turn data off? It kills data and mms needs data so you can't get it (might work with wlan on tho). Download something like apndroid wich has keep mms option from market.
Have you all checked your APN settings? Some widgets can cause them to be lost, I had this problem.
1. you need apn mms settings to be correct. send a mms to yourself to confirm this. for some reason also on my network (optus australia), apparently you need to send an mms to yourself to activate mms, before other people can mms you 0_0 (according to tech support)
2. for some reason if mms apn is off or disconnected, and you get an mms, when u reactivate mms data, it will be stuck at "downloading".
It seems impossible to recover this kind of MMS... Do other phones allow delayed MMS??? (This is my first smartphone, i don't get many mms)
To be safe, I use apn onoff by curvefish, leaving the option "MMS on". This way, when I get an mms, it automatically turns data on to recieve the message.
I am ultra careful, cause MMS is usually a "special" msg ie. from my friends (girls) lol...
Hello, i'm new to the forums. This is my first post but i've been reserching all over and cannot find a solution to this question I have...
I've been considering buying a HTC HD2 from my friend and unlocking it to use with my AT&T sim card (the phone is currently locked to T-Mobile).
After I unlock it I am planning on installing Android 2.2 onto the HTC. My current phone is a Samsung Solstice from AT&T. I have unlimited SMS/MMS but I don't have a data plan. I was wondering once i get the HD2, unlock it, then install Android 2.2 on it, if I can disable data but I've heard if u disable data then Multimedia Messaging (MMS) doesn't work... (I cant afford a data plan and wont need to browse the web away from wifi so i'm fine without data plan.) I would REALLY like to keep MMS working fine but without using data. is there anyway i can enable MMS and not data? I would call AT&T and asked them to block all data access except MMS but i'm afraid if i tell them that i'm using a HD2 (smart phone) they'll force me to pay for data and that would not be good. can someone please help me disable/block data but continue using MMS, all help/advice is appreciated, thanks in advanced
plzzzz i would really like to know this
BUMP
As my understanding, data is use when sending and receiving mms, but you are not charged for the data because you have sms/mms plan, maybe there is limit how many kb per message, if you over that they may charge you the extra.
I'm not sure about ATT, but Tmobile if I accidently go to internet, they tell me that I don't have data plan, and ask if I want the data or something...., I just click cancel, I never been charged for the data.
I am using the HD2 on ATT, I can tell you for a fact there is no way to block data and allow MMS, MMS uses data to send picture and video msgs. Calling ATT will not help either. As long as you have not upgraded your phone thru them they cannot force you to get a data plan, if they attempt to, you can tell them you want to be put on a pay per use, if they say no, demand a supervisor explain you have a wifi and you dont want the plan, a little pushing will get you want you want.
Also ATT cannot block data and not MMS from their end either, just not possible.
Go into apn settings. If you have only one for data and mms, then edit it, and right at the end "apn type" probably says "default " or perhaps "*" or maybe "default, supl, mms "
Change that to say just "mms"
If you have two entries one will be for default, supl and will have a on off toggle, the second will be for mms and won't have a toggle. Just toggle off the data one or edit out the default in apn type.

Hi Sam, just found you on here ad wanted to say thank you so much for the Nand Android flash, its like having a new phone, I owe you a few pints. Ian, Stev's ffriend.
now that my phone is running CM7...
is there any way to disable data but still be able to send/receive mms?
prior to flashing to CM7, when i was on stock 2.3.4, i was able to get it to where "data" is always on but only to receive mms.. apps like foursquare, fb, etc didnt work. never started using data when i went out of wifi.. bad part about this was i couldnt send mms.. all i remember doing was disabling data in the hidden menu, and changing the APN.. iirc, the "spot where it says "data enabled", that was checked..
now that i have flashed to cm7, i disabled data in the hidden menu, changed the APN, but it still uses data for everything like foursquare, fb, etc once i have data turned on in settings, everything goes on data and starts using it.. foursquare gets updates, etc.. yah i can send and receive mms too but what the heck happened D:
so now im on CM7, is tehre something that can disable data without disabling mms? i understand some people say u need data to send n receive mms but eh
using T-mobile with no data plan.
tried finding that data toggle widget someone had suggested in the past but cant find it.
-------------------
tried disabling data on *#*#4636#*#*, none of the APN's worked.... couldnt get mms or go online
after enabling data... apn's grabbed data.. D:
so back to using the mms.voicestream.com one... and just having data disabled for now... enabling it when i see a mms coming in...
unless u guys have better ideas
Have you tried using a firewall?
You don't need a data plan to send/received MMS.
You do need to have the correct APN setup.
Name: MMS
APN: epc.tmobile.com
MMSC:http://mms.msg.eng.t-mobile.com/mms/wapenc
MCC:310
MNC:260
APN type:mms
everything else blank (not set).
is that the only apn i put in there or which ones do i have in there ?
hmm looks like it may be working.. no internet access.. can receive mms... no response on sending yet.

That's good. Also if you haven't done it.
Go into the stock messaging app.
Settings>Custom User-Agent>Chose Custom>Android-Mms/2.0
or chose Nokia N95
this way your incoming MMS doesn't get resize to thumbnail size
good to know ! dunoe what most of these customization stuff does on cm7 ahhahaha anything else ud like to suggest? (even if it doesnt pertain to messaging) xD
