Is Ubuntu ready on the HD2? - HD2 Ubuntu Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting and General

Check this out. Looks like it's just been published. Now obviously the touch isn't working, hence the reason for the hosted keyboard and mouse (which I find quite interesting to be working well). Other than that everything seems to work perfectly, even wifi!
http://www.overclock.net/software-news/764372-twitter-ubuntu-running-htc-hd2.html
So would there be a way to actually run this now as the Linux kernel seems patched and ready to go thanks to the devs. Would it just need a regular copy of ubuntu armel? Or will we need some extended drivers?

Oh come on don't be so stereotypical. Honestly, where would I get all the info I got if I wasn't following that thread? If you read the 1st post again, I'm clearly not a lazy person who refuses to use search. Seeing as though that link was posted four hours prior to when I created this thread, obviously someone has gone ahead and found how to put a semi functional copy of Ubuntu on the HD2, on top of the new Linux kernel. Anyone have useful information to add?

[CLOSED][Samsung SCH-i760 ROM] What would be best???

*THIS "PROJECT" IS CLOSED ON MY PART!*
If you wish to still follow this, please visit the below link, I believe alquimista and some other folks are still giving this a try.

Samsung SCH-i760 ROM
**UPDATE 03/10/08**
I have found some useful tools to help me accomplish this, but still have some things left to find. Any help would be awesome, first I need a way to find what I can remove (useless files that take up space) and most importantly where I should to start to make this work. I'm pretty sure the forums will be closed later today, so if you could email if your able to assist me I would appreciate it!
What do you think?
Hey everybody, I've been browsing this forum numerous times in the past couple of weeks looking to customize my i760 and haven't found much on it for upgrading it's performance. It seems that not many users have this phone, so I'm thinking of creating a ROM for this device.
It will probably take me some time, being this will be my first time creating anything for a PPC.
I'm asking for some help for this:
a) From fellow i760 users to get some input on what might be the best items for the ROM.
b) Also from advanced users on the best way to approach this creation.
All help will be very much appreciated.
I'd like to have some contribution to this forum, seeing how my phone has been completely customized from developers on this site. Big Thanks to all of you out there whos software I am using! You all have done a great job, I appreciate your time and hard work for it.
What are your all's thoughts on this?
Thanks in advance.
Any question you can email me @ jtisr241 @ aim dot com.

I had the i760. I got rid of it because of the lack or roms.
And Your are right there are no roms out there, its not because people dont have it, but its something with the way Samsung makes their roms. It's not as flexible with as the HTC devices.
Thanks for the info, I still have a ton of research to do before I look into the development, I'll keep that in mind hopefully I can find a way around it.

I'm not sure what compatibility the ROM will have, another thing I'm learning.
I would love to see a rom that does not include the d-day and all the get it now and vzw branded software there under WM6.1 with the threaded MMS of 6.1 and the Palm threaded SMS. But, that is just a pipe dream, so I will settle for just a software update.
Thank you for your effort sir.

Thanks, that's what I hear, hopefully once I figure out all the odds and ends to ROM's I can better understand how this is configured.
I second the vote for a rom that does not have the "extra" garbage including that useless picsel browser thing. An end button deactivator (comes in handy to "accidentally" hang up on the wife, but most of the time it's a pain in the ass), a built-in S2U2-like app, built-in touchscreen inteface (ifonz-like I guess). Overclocking.
Overall better memory use, power use, touchscreen use, end deactivator (tried AE, it hated my i760!!)
Update: Oh you know what I'd really like to see - one touch access to contacts, then particular category. The thing I miss most from my cell phone is pressing one button which calls up MY contact list, not the thousands of contact in Outlook. So to recap press a soft key, get the personal contacts list category.
what is the good word?
yea there's def. not a ton of support for the i760; but i've heard that there will be an update to wm6.1 for it so that should satisfy alot of us owners if its true
I hope theres a 6.1 Rom!!
I hear there is and Verizon will have it for download for the i760 on there web site when they finish there part of it.

760 for High speed Internet Bluetooth connection
Hey does anyone have any luck using the 760 as a celluar modem? I am using PDANet to open the profile and I connect without issue but I can only stay connected for a very short time usually less then one minute.
I have also been all over this site and I am looking for a ROM and there does not seem to be much of anything available for this device. Has anyone had any success with the ROM or any update that would let me use this device reliably with my laptop. I am not sure if it is Verizon or a setting on the phone but it is killing me.
Thanks for any suggestions.

I just ordered a i760 so i can help.
i say no iphone interface, its not that good i dont see why people want to copy it.
Alright, it seems there won't be an update anytime soon from Verizon, so I'll try to get something accomplished here, it seems all I do is work sometimes. Anyways, I'm still messing with apps and plugins to see what I want to build here. As soon as I can figure which I want I'll post the news.
Any suggestions on what should be included?

i760 Rom Dump
@ TheChampJT
I've been watching this thread for a bit now. At the same time I have been digging deep into my i760.
I was finally able to use itsutils (from here: http://www.xs4all.nl/~itsme/projects/xda/tools.html ) to run the following commands without errors:
pdocread
pmemmap
pmemdump 0x80000000 0x02000000 rom.nb
That last one gave me a 32Mb file obviously titled "rom.nb". I was feeling all uber l33t until I realized I have no clue what to do now. I am trying to decompile the file I dumped with the perl script that Willem (aka itsme) posted on his RAPI tools site. I am trying to compile the perl script in WinXP, because that's the OS I dumped the rom.nb file with. Should I boot into linux (fedora 8 or Backtrack3beta is all I got) to run the perl script? I haven't tried much of anything with it yet because I just dumped the rom.nb file late last night. However, any advice would be much appreciated.
I think my i760 is CID unlocked, because the first time I tried to run pdocread I got an error that said "Have you CID or application unlocked your device?". When I was able to run pdocread, I assumed I had somehow CID unlocked my device. But I have no way to tell for sure whether its CID unlocked or not. Its not like there's a popup window on the i760 that says "You've CID unlocked you device!!" So that's my second question, how do I know if I CID unlocked my device?
I've been hacking away at this for a solid 12days now Well, more like a month or so. I always peek into my new toy's registry as soon as I get it and make a few changes here and there to see what happens. I've run the Windows Mobile Security Configuration Tool and set my profile's security to "off". I made some changes to the reg entries under the policies entry. I've also done the whole **33284 then set to DM then reboot and set data connection to Modem Through USB, connected my i760 and installed the drivers for the Samsung modem in that mode (they are different from the MCCI drivers and modem set up). As you can probably tell, I operate on a "try a small hack, then see what happens, repeat" basis.
So that's where I'm at right now. Probably TMI for you, or anyone else reading this, but I am trying to put out as much info/knowledge as I can.
Obviously I am willing to help get a working, easy to use, cooked rom. Let me know if you want any of the files I have pulled off my device or any of the tools or dll's that I have found on the web, or any of the print outs I got from the itsutils cmd line tools.

Im not asking for things "tailor made", all i am simply asking is for someone to kindly tell me how i would download the files to the X1...how it works. i don't see anything stating this.
you can download user manuals right now,
don't have to wait for your x1 to arrive...

it depends on what format the files that you're downloading are in.
they will most likely be cabs which are files that you have to install from the phone. either copy them across to your memory card (using a card reader if you have one) and install them from there or (easier) use microsoft activesync to copy the files across and run them.
best of luck.

[Q] to Wiki

I know I'm supposed to search the forum first and well, I did but I couldn't find anything which was near what I want to ask.
So, I got a HTC Touch HD from my father (he's old one) and because I don't like windows that much and because I'm using linux on my laptop anyway I wanted to put on Android and well... it worked without any problems (Android 2.2 (FroYo)). Now I wanted to look some stuff up... like how to connect my HTC to my Laptop or how to turn it off... very basic stuff and when I wanted to look it up in the wiki it was kinda strange because it was telling me about the camera and stuff and on the description of FroYo it already says that camera doesn't work and well... it doesn't but that's not the point here.
So my actual question is: Is the forum for FroYo or is it for Windows?
Sorry for making such a large question . Thanks in advance
P.S. forgot to post which link I mean: http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/index.php?title=File:HTC_Blackstone.png

that would be so great, but I don't know it was XDA that I had read it on, and but I believe they found the SBK in a batch file somewhere in an update file for the k1.. I am so ready to get Root!! The bounty is up to $735 now that's a good bounty right there
Thanks for the heads up - that's fantastic news!
edit: thought he meant the TPT key was found. Back to hoping...

Leaked keys for K1 have been out for a while. Did not hear about them also being in an update. Someone should go through all the updates on their website for the TPT.
I don't have a TPT, but I find the rooting a challenge. What is needed are leaked keys or a leaked signing certificate.
I will dig through some of the forums to see if I can find out exactly where they found the k1 keys, I found an Rsa. Cert file, and a couple of other files, that all had to do with the certificate in one of the update files I downloaded to dig through opened them up in a hex editor lots of info wouldn't even know what to look for . I'd be willing to test whatever i have adb and everything adb is pretty sad you cant do much of anything with it...

The K1 keys I saw were leaked from a China website based on an ASUS. They were then used to exploit the K1, and bang, we got root.

I don't care about any bounty, so let it go to pay for a leaked key or certificate. I'll root it just for the challenge.

That was only for the K1 and it's already done.
They're looking for TPT rooting keys now
I was hoping that this new OTA would have had a fix for the remapping of the Ctrl key on the Keyboard Folio, but alas it doesn't. Its a bit frustrating trying to copy and paste using the usual Ctrl+C, Ctrl+V when that Ctrl key also opens up any menu.
Someone suggested to edit the Generic.kl in the system/usr/keylayout folder but I haven't been able to fully get adb set up correctly on my pc yet to even get to that file, and even if I did, i wouldn't know what to change it to.
TS

Guides and wiki's for new NST owners

This thread is for folks to post noob-friendly guides for hacks, mods, and other awesome tweaks for the Nook Simple Touch (NST). I'll update as I learn more or as folks post more interesting stuff, or if people have corrections or suggestions, and also to take account of new developments.
BTW- please don't quote the first post (or any really long post for that matter). If you accidentally do, please edit it out of your post.
GUIDE ONE) Enable multitouch and norefresh
1) What you need:
nook simple touch
microSD card and a way to write to it (USB adapter or SD adapter and a card reader)
sd card with clockwork recovery image (from mali100) (I'll write my own guide for this soon)
A root file explorer (I suggest ES file explorer; free, simple, awesome)
both of these files on the root of the CWR SD card: norefresh (toggle version), and multitouch
2) Install multitouch:
Boot into CWR (insert your SD card and restart!)
choose "install zip from SD card" and then "choose zip from sd card"
select "multitouch.zip"
click "yes" (hint: it's the only one that isn't "no")
remove the sd card, then select "reboot device now"
3) Install norefresh apk
open ES file explorer
select norefresh.apk
click yes (did you really need a guide for that?)
That's it! Now, how do you use it?
4) Using your awesome tablet-esqe combination of norefresh+multitouch:
find the norefresh app in the drawer and open it. It won't do anything except flash the screen
Now, open a program you might want to use it with (pdf readers and simple games)
tap the screen four times, in a line starting from top left moving to bottom right (watch this video from marspeople if that doesn't make sense)
5) Stand back in awe. Then go thank the devs in this thread for norefresh (I think it's a combination of Bardo8430 and Marspeople's combined work, correct me if I'm wrong and I'll update); and this thread for multitouch (It appears to be some combination of wheilitjohnny and mali100; again correct me if I'm wrong).
Welcome to the NST community! Oddly enough, I was thinking of creating a thread that will (hopefully) become stickied with quick-start stuff for new people. Might as well start here
GabrialDestruir gave a pretty good explanation about the different rooting methods, which can be found here (just ignore the part about TorimuNooter, development has been stopped and the links have been pulled).
I myself used MinimalTouch (called MinimalNooter on that page) before my Nook broke. It's a little more involved than TouchNooter, but in the end you'll be able to use the Market (Google Play?) sooner. I think there might be some issues with the 1.1.0 vs 1.1.2, but I didn't get the chance to update to 1.1.2 to see for myself.
Be sure to create a backup before you root in the off chance something goes wrong or you decide you don't want your Nook rooted anymore. Here is a link to the backup thread.
Once you feel like you know your way around your Nook well enough, you might consider some of these fun hacks:
NoRefresh - Makes the screen B/W, but will make the screen update MUCH faster and removes the ghosting for the most part
Multitouch - As the name implies, it enables multitouch. You will probably want to use this with NoRefresh.
Flash Player - Flash Player. On the Nook. You will need NoRefresh unless you like seeing ghosts
Video Players - Sure, there's no sound, but it's just fun to have a video on an E-Ink display.
USBHost - This will allow you to plug a keyboard or other USB device into the Nook's micro-USB port and have it actually do something. I think someone got a GPS working at some point... There's also a work-in-progress guide here.
Edit:
There's also this index for manually rooting and doing some other cool things with your Nook, such as changing the shutdown screen.
Thanks for putting your time into this, Googie. That response could become a thread itself if written as an OP. This is really helpful!
Hey googie- Thanks for the great start! I'll update the OP and the title; I agree, hopefully this will get stickied.
So does the "broken nook" mean that you are not going to be a part of this community any more? that would be a shame. I hope you can find another! Best of luck!
BTW- if anyone else has more information I'd be happy to add it to the OP. Depending on the amount of complexity of information received, I may not be the best person to have control over the new user sticky; if you want to write a full guide, you should probably do so in a new thread (to replace this one, assuming it gets stickied).
I've searched a lot, but I can't find a "newbie comprehensive guide"... For example I've found how to root manually my nook simple touch, but I still can't find a way to install manually various .apk's
A sticky with all this basic stuff, would be perfect

That's what I'm hoping to create here. If I get some more suggestions, I'll update it. With all the development going on around here, it would be nice to have a newbie sticky! In particular, what I think what many people will want is a guide (or an all-in-one package) that gives root, installs gapps, and enables norefresh and multitouch. I love the devs, but sometimes the "how-to" threads get a bit complex or give too many options (think about how simple it is with an apple product; they dumb it down to one way to install. Give people a choice on anything and they'll get confused and won't do it. Sad but true). And without any stickies, this forum is... frankly, it's a jumbled mess of complex and often overlapping guides.
Once I get up to speed on this I'll try to create my own guide, but until then, I'm calling for you NST experts to link here to the most interesting stuff available; I'll sort and package it when it's ripe!
I'll wait impatiently
I updated the OP with a noob guide to getting norefresh and multitouch running. Anyone know who the mod is for this forum? If so, mind messaging him to sticky this thread?

Me too! I just got mine Friday, so I figured if I'm going to spend all this time figuring it out, I might as well write it down. I think sometimes the devs get sort of wrapped up in all of the options, so that when you read their guides you have to choose between 4 or 5 options at different steps. As nice as that is to have choice, for most of us (especially those of us who just joined) just want a few simple hacks to start, and are willing to add stuff once we get comfortable. Additionally, the devs don't usually explain the choices (because they're usually explained elsewhere) so you have to track them down, and all the open webpages end up overwhelming your brain and you screw something up.
BTW- If you come up with your own noob-friendly guides, pop them in here and I'll continue to update the OP.
Good job slack, one detail only: in some cases (like mine) nook is set NOT to allow application installation from other sources than market, so you have to change this setting from "nook color tools" , and if this doesn't do any good things get a little complicated http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=24302191&postcount=114
Awesome! This is cool. Once I get back from the beach I will be following the guide.

Hey fufutos- I didn't have this issue. Can you write a little noob-friendly guide explaining where and when this needs to be done? If that's too much, just tell me where in my guide I should add a note about this.
I think a mention and the settings change would be o.k. for start. For the rare unlucky guys like me you can provide the link , but they have to set up an adb server... not the easiest task for the occasional newbie...
oh great was looking for something like this...just got my nook simple touch...and as being a flashing whore..i cant stand using stock on any device
I am going to try my hand at creating a noob tutorial for MinimalTouch rooter, maybe with screenshots. I may even try to get a screenshot of CWM
Anyway, I will post it when it is done.
It's been a while since i updated this thread. Sorry, doesn't appear there's a mod for this forum (explains why there's no stickies anywhere...). If anyone want to write a new guide, please do so. One suggestion would be a guide for unrooting and returning to stock...

Actually to unroot or return to stock easily just use the Touchformatter, also on my sig.

Did you ever figure out what to do with those lines of code?
Also, I spoke to some friends and they told me that those security blocks are usually removed from legitimate root ROMs... does this mean that the NTG ROM on this forum is bad?
