Ok so I've done a bit of searching and asking on androidforums but nobody can figure out my an answer to my problem. Alright, first off originally the phone had android 1.5 but when sprint released the 2.1 update I did it. From there, I used regaws tutorial on rooting the official 2.1 release which worked great. Basically I was on a mission at this point, a mission to try out all the 2.1 based custom rims. I had been using the rom manager app for its ability to wipe and flash new roms without even rebooting to recovery. As you are probably aware, to do anything with rom manager, you have to have their clockwork mod recovery flashed, which is simple to do with this app. So one day I wiped and flashed a new rom, aloysius I think, and after it was trying to boot the new rom it gave me some error message and the installation failed. I think at this point I tried to restore my nandroid, which also didn't work, I'm guessing that you have to be using the same recovery you were using when you created the nandroid? No matter what I did from recovery I could not restore my nandroid, as a last ditch effort I did a factory wipe and then rebooted. I didn't think it would reboot at all, honestly I was way scared and thought that I had bricked the phone but after about 5 minutes it finished booting up. Now I don't understand why or how, but when it came to it was quite obvious, I was back at stock 2.1. I immediately look in the app tray for the superuser app and obviously it isn't there, I've been dealing with the phone as is for about a month. A couple of weeks ago I decided to get back to work, sat down at the computer and tried to root it again using the same exact method. After like 5 attempts I get the same problem, I get to the step where command prompt spells out "UNREVOKED" really big but I notice that instead of having a "$" like it shows in the picture I have a "#". At this point the guide instructs you to open the Superuser app on the app tray on the phone, sure enough, I don't have one. I have tried this probably like 7 times all with the same result. I've even tried to install that .6 update to patch whatever remnant of root access I have and go from there as I'm sure the fact I was rooted once and lost it has something to do with my failure. I've tried running RUU's many times as well and always wind up getting an error 171 USB connection error. I havent heard of anyone else having an issue like this. I'm not sure whether I posted this thread in the right place to really get help either so if this needs to be moved to development or whatever don't hesitate. I'd really appreciate anyone trying to figure this out as I am tired of running the slow stock rom but have exhausted virtually every option that I am aware of, PLEASE HELP ME!
I know everyone is probably still reading that book I posted, but once you get to the end lol please gimme some advice, i've tried everything and don't wanna live with the phone as is for the next year....
It's a little hard to read your original post, but I'll do my best to help. From the sound of it you may still have root.
I haven't had to root on stock 2.1 install, so I'm not familiar with the new method. If you get to a bash shell or terminal prompt that is a '#' rather than a '$', you still have root.
You said that you did a factory wipe on the phone. Did you RUU or did you simply wipe through recovery? Are you still able to get to the clockwork recovery?
If you can get back to your modded recovery, you're golden. I would STRONGLY recommend you flash the newest Amon_RA. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=4898505&postcount=1
If you can get that far, you should just be able to wipe and flash a new ROM.
have you tried to update your sync/drivers on your computer lately?

Oh well I finally got it all figured out, had to rum the ruu twice back to back whole the phone was still frozen at the bootloader. From there I finally was able to re root it.
Hey folks, I've read through all the JI6 OTA threads here and on the TMo forums and while I've seen a few people guess as to the cause of soft bricks, dosen't seem like anyone has nailed down the actual cause. I'm going to assume I'm not the only person out there with no access to a windows box to run ODIN so knowing what if anything can be done to prep my phone before accepting the OTA (that is sitting in my notification bar as we speak) would be immensely helpful.
So far the two best guesses I've seen are the existence of other update.zip files on SD and removal of bloatware, specifically Media Hub and possibly edited startup/shutdown screens.
Since I've got all these going on, I guess I'm staring down the barrel of a brick. But obviously one of these is easily rectified while the others, not so much.
Aside from those claiming bricks on vigin phones. Can we hear from those who have made mods to their rooted devices and either did or did not experience an OTA brick? I think this info will be helpful to many in sorting out what exactly is going on here.
I have black bar mod, I have naked swype, removed most t-mob app except media hub no change to start up or shut downtried to update. 50 % through it said update failed. Then rebooted fine. But I had an extra update.zip on my sd so maybe that's why. But no firmware now? Maybe I'm sol.

Mine wouldn't complete the update Rooted, most of the bloat removed, had an update on the sd. Was able to get into clockwork after the failed update and am performing a nandroid restore now.
this is great, thank you. beginning to look more like an issue with extra update.zip files than media hub. any successful OTA's with media hub removed prior to accepting the update?
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App
I never uninstalled Media Hub. I have seen a correlation of about 5 people who had ROM manager installed and used that to install Recovery. Whether it be the installation of Recovery or a possible permissions issue with how it generates the update.zip that may have caused my issue.
just a question, why do people remove media hub? Does the application make the phone slow?

Because up until now, it was a non-functional app. I didn't remove it, I use LauncherPro so I just removed it from my drawer. I'm still not touching this update. I got my Vibrant used so I would be out of luck if it jacked my phone up and I hate using ODIN. Too much hassle when my phone runs great on Bionix 1.4 as it is.
Wife's phone was toasted by OTA. Stuck at Vibrant screen. Rooted, unlocked, she did have an update.zip, if that turns out to be the culprit. Also had some apps removed, replacement startup animations, and removed shutdown junk.
She was set for always-on WiFi, too.
My rooted Vibrant soft bricked yesterday and I had to flash stock with Odin. I had the (what seems to be infamous) update.zip, removed Kindle, Mobi TV, Avatar Icon, Gogo. I had RyanZAOneClickLagFixV1+ installed but removed it. I also had the EXT2 Tools installed. @ the time of the update I was @ work and had a full charge on the phone. I flashed back to stock last night after work, and I haven't recieved the update notificaiton again...maybe TMo crossed me off some type of "update list"?
There are also different possible symptoms.
In my case the update appeared to have completed its cycle, except the tail end of the download of the new update wnt really fast then the system rebooted. System came back up into the Black Vibrant screen. I could start 'adb logcat' and the system had SurfaceFlinger repeatedly crashing.
Attempts in Recovery Mode after this to reinstall files didn't resolve the issue, reboots would still lead to a crashing SurfaceFlinger.
2 separate users in a thread, 1 had removed Boot Animations + Sounds, I only had removed Sounds.
Quite a few people had Stock Roms + Root, but some with Root didn't have any issues. Only correlation was with Titanium + Rom Manager, which a lot of people would have installed since it's listed in the Tips and Tricks thread. Titanium shouldn't do anything to the system unless you generate a backup Update.zip or install LZO support busybox.
One guess is that ROM Manager and Titanium can create a update.zip file that doesn't have the proper permissions. An OTA update that attempts to overwrite this file may get confused. Simply removing the file in advance may alleviate this issue. Another issue is ROM Manager installs ROM Recovery, which may change how the OTA perceives the phone.
Bionix 1.4...
I was running Bionix 1.4 KK OC/UV yesterday morning... Was a little dumbfounded when I received the update message from Tmo. Figured it wouldn't show w/ modded handset. Delayed install until I could read everything on here about it. Tried installing over Bionix last night just to see, and had no joy. I had removed all crapware, mediahub included. Hit 50%, said flash failed, rebooted and was back to my homescreen in no time. No ill effects to phone except being denied upgrade.
So I Odined back to Stock JFD FW (and wiped device for S&G), rooted, and updated from JI6 tar posted. Flashed perfectly, no ill effects as I've noticed. Reception is improved (for me anyway), and GPS functions similar to Bionix... No real incentive for update, but was curious.
I see Bionix 1.7 updated so it was all for nothing.
Now to play with other stuff...
Cheers
My girl friends phone bricked the other night from the OTA, it's rooted(update.zip) and has the bloatware uninstalled, nothing else like lagfix/roms on it etc.
T-Moible is sending her a replacement phone, which im pretty surprised about. Now since we have to send the old phone back so they can check for damage or anything that would void the warrenty.
We get to keep the external SD card(Avatar), now im sure there is a pretty good chance they will find that its been rooted. So we would have to pay $400 they said if its voided.
Now I can't get this phone to boot into download mode or even mount it, so what should I do? I know about ODIN but have never used it, can it mount the phone?
I got the soft brick and had to flash back to stock via Odin and then I flashed the JI6 tar file from the forum. All is working fine now.
I had root but no update.zip file on the sdcard root, had removed startup an shutdown sounds, had used both ROM Manager and Titanium (with LZO compression turned on), and had removed bloatware including the non-functioning Media Hub.
Next time I'll flash back to stock before doing an OTA update.
I am rooted have Titanium backup, ROM Manager, and clockwork mod. I also had an update.zip but I think it was from OCLF not from another source. My update went fine and I'm running without any problems on the new update.

there is a cross platform tool being developed called 'Heimdall'. It is currently a command line tool and is in beta. however people are successfully flashing their phones using it. It is obviously not a 'one click' solution, so you will have to go find the proper files and type out the command.
It can be found here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=755265#
If you are the type of person with access to both a windows machine and a linux machine, I suggest you check this out. Testers are needed. Of course you can test if you don't have windows, but it's nice to have Odin as a back up. ;-) just incase....

I had a failed update twice using Odin. It wasn't until I went back to stock T959JFD for the second time and deleted update.zip and all clockwork back ups that it finally worked. Runs perfect with no issues.

Was rooted with OCLF, Captive camera, gps fix, rom manager, titanium backup and add removal. Removed the OCLF and unrooted, ran the update, looked like it got to 100% (not sure cause I looked away and then back at it right before reboot) but said update failed. Got stuck at the vibrant screen blah blah. I'm pretty sure I had an update.zip on the sd, but not 100% on that. After pushing the update with ODIN I have noticed my phone lagging quite a bit.... Thoughts?

I just had my phone rooted on tuesday by a friend. It started turning itself off for the first few hours and went back to normal for a day. Last night it started turning itself on and off every minute. I know nothing about phones, can anyone help me?
How did your friend root?
Did they delete system apps?
Did they apply lag fixes?
Perhaps just flash a custom rom. Their better than stock and should fix your issue. I hope they didn't do a lag fix. Disable it if they did.
He did something like holding the power button/volume up/down to get into download mode? That's all i know. He said he didn't remove any of the system apps, or change anything. He added a wifi-tethering for me, that's why he rooted it. I know nothing about phones and computers. I'm out of town for another week so i can't have him fix it, but i need to do something so i can use my phone. Any suggestions?
oh ya, he used ODIN if i remember right
I don't know why he would be using Odin if all he was doing was rooting the phone. Can you get to the web to DL anything? I would try flashing something with clockwork till you can re-flash to stock with Odin. You need to find out what exactly your friend did when he worked on your phone.
Can you adb? I would like to see the log.

my phone wont stay on long enough to do anything. When i push the power/up/down buttons at the same time i get a picture of a droid and it says power reset or unknown upload mode
whats adb? I'm a preschooler when it comes to anything computer/phone related
I was getting panic mode/upload when I was messing with eugenes kernals.

As was I, and that's the only time I've seen that screen.
OP, you're friend definitely did more than simply root your phone. Especially if you say he used Odin? There's no reason to use Odin to gain root.
I would recommend you Odin back to stock and start fresh.
is there any way i can do it without Odin? I'm out of town for a week and need my phone
Rom manager / clockworkmod. Just go to the app store (it's free) and download it. Flash the recovery and flash back to stock 2.1 eclair. It should fix it then when you get home just use the one click root method to root your phone. Check the vibrant bible in android dev. to do it, it's really easy to do yourself since it is literally, one click ^_^ Also for the rom of 2.1 I also recommend going to the vibrant bible for that as well. All you have to do is dl rom manager, put the 2.1 rom on the root of your sd (not external sd) then go into rom manager and install custom rom (pick the stock 2.1). It will wipe your data but your phone should be fixed and you can always dl back your apps and import contacts through your gmail account. Hope this helps.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=740077
that's eugene's stock 2.1 for vibrant flashable through clockworkmod ^_^
Sorry about the post as this may not be the best place for it.
My phone got low on memory so was trying to clear stuff, it rebooted then on the loading screen (Myn RLS 5) perpetually restarted. So went into recovery
and tried to do a backup (so could format as my last backup was old) and it threw an error in mid -backup (did write it down, doh!!)
Now the phone does the 5 vibration thing and does boot. Also SD won't mount get " /dev/block/mmcblk0p1" error. Also I now notice the phone reset to "S-on" I had a long time ago rooted with unRevoked Forever.
I have read several posts about this , but confused on the best way (instructions) to get a img file on and reinstalled. I have used adb before but only basically , unfortunately my computer at work doesn't have adb installed so cannot test things now.
So if anyone has a good one or two methods for me to try tonight, would be much appreciated. Also totally surprised that security went to "on" so probably have to address that first.
Oh phone is EVO, HBOOT 0.93 , Radio 2.15.00.05.02 . If I should post this somewhere please feel free to direct me there.
EDIT: I have ClockworkMod Recovery 2.6.01 installed and can get into it.
Thanks so much.
Kevin
First I woud try the sd card fix found here:http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=695243&highlight=sd+card+won't+mount Then I would downgrade your radio to 2.15.00.11.19 using a flashable pc36.img file. All radio versions can be found in the development section. If the first 2 steps are successful, run a 3.70 ruu(can also be found in development). If that is successful, reroot using unrevoked forever and you should be good to go.I' not sure if the radio downgrade will work with s-on,but I think if you use the flashable pc36.img version it will go thru,if it doesn't,you can still try the 3.70 ruu.I ran into some incompatability issues with trying to run the 2.15.00.5.02 radio with older software and hboot versions.
@BrianBusby2038,
Thanks for the post, good information I will give it a try. Interestingly the phone did eventually boot into Myn for a few minutes before the 5 vibrations of death started again.
So looked and it def. doesn't see the SD. So hopefully can recover.
I am wondering if the AData SD card I have is not reliable. Thankfully have the original 8GB card so hopefully can get things going again.
Anybody have a good recommendation for a 16GB microSD that is fast (buying from Newegg) ?
thanks again
No problem, hope it works out ok.

I had this same problem a few days ago and I had to get a replacement ordered (a 2.3 preloaded replacement ). Make sure that your USB is still working, because both my SD card and USB stopped working, S-ON went on, and the five vibrations/green light shut down problem happened. I was able to get S-Card operational, but USB was no go. I could not log in as super user and could not enter the commands necessary to fix usb. No USB = No root = no fix for USB. Now I'm stuck with a 2.3 evo, at least its shiny and new .
Hope you fix yours, I wonder how this problem has happened to so many of us randomly. PS: when you take it to sprint store, don't complicate matters and revert to stock.
Crude, fastboot on PC throwing driver error, how do I tell if the right driver is installed.
This is really sucking, Ive only ever installed one driver and could connect with adb.
So not sure what to do.
EDIT: says can't start because AdbWinApi.dll is missing
@robertsaurus,
not sure how I could go to stock if I cant re-image. Yeah definitely don't want to make a fuss, ugh
I lost clockwork mod and ended up only being able to access default Android recovery menu. I think an option on there will restore the factory Rom and make it look like it was never rooted. I know people have been able to fix theirs but I gave up after a days worth of trying
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
Well I had partial success. I restored a signed Sprint Rom, but phone keeps rebooting and USB doesn't work. the 5 vibrations seemed to have gone away. Though since I can get usb to work I can't do a RUU install and remove clockwork.
I did talk to Sprint and they are willing to early upgrade me and buy the EVO back for 125 so long as it boots and it does .
So going to give that a whirl , I have 30 days so may give a few other things on the evo a try before I return. Doing the upgrade I just lose out on some of the rooting so we'll see how that impacts me.
I had the exact issue. I think if you do a wipe from the boot menu (power and vol down) it will get rid of it all. And then take it to sprint and play dumb . Worked for me, new shiny evo lol
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
yeah I played dumb, but since it was out of warranty 1month and 10 days. they wouldn't replace . But at least get upgrade and buy back on the EVO which is not bad.
Though I am over the next couple of days try and get the EVO rescued, so long its still bootable I can take advantage of the buyback

Interestingly I could get the 5 vibrations thing to go away if I applied unrevoked forever s-on. the phone will still reboot and usb not functioning yet. Going to try and get a shell script running to fix usb , or try and do a re-rooting via the auto root, maybe hboot usb will work (fastboot did)
I did get the photon (we'll see how it works, though miss my rooting and evo)
so if like hopefully they will unlock the bootloader.
hey all, I could use a little help on my phone. I tried to root it and I am stuck I have been using my old evo3d since it came out, and just picked up an HTC 10, so I am rusty on rooting and other things.
Anyway, I unlocked the bootloader on the HTC10 via htcdev,
installed twrp
flashed supersu (this where where the issue started)
so basically I thought I was rooted, did a root checker app and it said I wasn't.
I went to reflash supersu.zip and wiped everything again, but actually wiped EVERYTHING, no OS on my phone now.
Anyway, I am now asking for help. I am S-on right now, can get in to recovery, but just don't want to screw it up more. So could use a few tips. I am thinking about flashing the bad boy rom, but am wondering if I need to be s-off or anything like that? or can I just put the zip on my sd card and flash?

Literally no android on it at all I think. I can get in to htc download and in to twrp recovery, but nothing else. So at this point, I need to figure out how to flash either a custom rom, or a stock, or what ever just to get my phone back. Thanks for any help
I do know that it does require you to format data because of encryption.

Remember that pretty much all your custom ROMs come rooted. No need to root the stock ROM unless you plan to stay stock.
Way too many times I see people having trouble or run into problems trying to root, when all they want to do is install a custom ROM.
