Need some newbie love with flashing phone.. - Sprint HTC 10 Questions & Answers

hey all, I could use a little help on my phone. I tried to root it and I am stuck I have been using my old evo3d since it came out, and just picked up an HTC 10, so I am rusty on rooting and other things.
Anyway, I unlocked the bootloader on the HTC10 via htcdev,
installed twrp
flashed supersu (this where where the issue started)
so basically I thought I was rooted, did a root checker app and it said I wasn't.
I went to reflash supersu.zip and wiped everything again, but actually wiped EVERYTHING, no OS on my phone now.
Anyway, I am now asking for help. I am S-on right now, can get in to recovery, but just don't want to screw it up more. So could use a few tips. I am thinking about flashing the bad boy rom, but am wondering if I need to be s-off or anything like that? or can I just put the zip on my sd card and flash?
Thanks,

did you flash the modified su

I did use that one when I did it. It didn't seem to work, (a couple apps said that there wasn't root) so in the process of trying again, I am pretty sure I wiped EVERYTHING on the phone. Literally no android on it at all I think. I can get in to htc download and in to twrp recovery, but nothing else. So at this point, I need to figure out how to flash either a custom rom, or a stock, or what ever just to get my phone back. Thanks for any help

I do know that it does require you to format data because of encryption.

Just put the ROM.zip on the sdcard and flash, ROM is already rooted, no S-off required

Thanks for the help, I think I got it figured out. Reinstalled supersu and then flashed the badboyz rom, seems to be working as we speak, so hopefully got it all worked out.

Remember that pretty much all your custom ROMs come rooted. No need to root the stock ROM unless you plan to stay stock.
Way too many times I see people having trouble or run into problems trying to root, when all they want to do is install a custom ROM.

Can't root, did before though

Ok so I've done a bit of searching and asking on androidforums but nobody can figure out my an answer to my problem. Alright, first off originally the phone had android 1.5 but when sprint released the 2.1 update I did it. From there, I used regaws tutorial on rooting the official 2.1 release which worked great. Basically I was on a mission at this point, a mission to try out all the 2.1 based custom rims. I had been using the rom manager app for its ability to wipe and flash new roms without even rebooting to recovery. As you are probably aware, to do anything with rom manager, you have to have their clockwork mod recovery flashed, which is simple to do with this app. So one day I wiped and flashed a new rom, aloysius I think, and after it was trying to boot the new rom it gave me some error message and the installation failed. I think at this point I tried to restore my nandroid, which also didn't work, I'm guessing that you have to be using the same recovery you were using when you created the nandroid? No matter what I did from recovery I could not restore my nandroid, as a last ditch effort I did a factory wipe and then rebooted. I didn't think it would reboot at all, honestly I was way scared and thought that I had bricked the phone but after about 5 minutes it finished booting up. Now I don't understand why or how, but when it came to it was quite obvious, I was back at stock 2.1. I immediately look in the app tray for the superuser app and obviously it isn't there, I've been dealing with the phone as is for about a month. A couple of weeks ago I decided to get back to work, sat down at the computer and tried to root it again using the same exact method. After like 5 attempts I get the same problem, I get to the step where command prompt spells out "UNREVOKED" really big but I notice that instead of having a "$" like it shows in the picture I have a "#". At this point the guide instructs you to open the Superuser app on the app tray on the phone, sure enough, I don't have one. I have tried this probably like 7 times all with the same result. I've even tried to install that .6 update to patch whatever remnant of root access I have and go from there as I'm sure the fact I was rooted once and lost it has something to do with my failure. I've tried running RUU's many times as well and always wind up getting an error 171 USB connection error. I havent heard of anyone else having an issue like this. I'm not sure whether I posted this thread in the right place to really get help either so if this needs to be moved to development or whatever don't hesitate. I'd really appreciate anyone trying to figure this out as I am tired of running the slow stock rom but have exhausted virtually every option that I am aware of, PLEASE HELP ME!
I know everyone is probably still reading that book I posted, but once you get to the end lol please gimme some advice, i've tried everything and don't wanna live with the phone as is for the next year....
It's a little hard to read your original post, but I'll do my best to help. From the sound of it you may still have root.
I haven't had to root on stock 2.1 install, so I'm not familiar with the new method. If you get to a bash shell or terminal prompt that is a '#' rather than a '$', you still have root.
You said that you did a factory wipe on the phone. Did you RUU or did you simply wipe through recovery? Are you still able to get to the clockwork recovery?
If you can get back to your modded recovery, you're golden. I would STRONGLY recommend you flash the newest Amon_RA. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=4898505&postcount=1
If you can get that far, you should just be able to wipe and flash a new ROM.
have you tried to update your sync/drivers on your computer lately?

Oh well I finally got it all figured out, had to rum the ruu twice back to back whole the phone was still frozen at the bootloader. From there I finally was able to re root it.

You're going to want to use SBF. Search for it on these forums. Bascially it will take you back to stock with no root and format memory. It may seem a bit complicated to some, but it is really easy.
I agree with cstrife. SBF'ing is not very hard to do and it will get you back to 100% stock. I've done it several times myself. Just make sure you get the correct system version

[Q] Non rooted Gingerbread Stock - Custom Revery Which one ??

Hi,
My warranty has just run out on my Nexus One so I've decided to unlock the bootloader.
My Aim is to get from stock non rooted Gingerbread to rooted Gingerbread with busybox, SU, and ultimately being able to boot into ubunto in chroot, I've been reading up on all this for a few days now but just need a small amount of help with Recovery, Gingerbread ROM choice, and the order that thing should be done, by someone who's done this before.
I take it the first thing is to install SDK and get The USB Driver working on PC, its running XP by the way.
Then I unlock the bootloader, !HELP! to do this do I enter hboot or fastboot, before connecting the phone to the PC? I have to copy 3 files somewhere and use ADB and run command for **** OEM unlock, can't remember the exact command, (I've got instructions for this) and then agree to void my warranty etc.
I then find and download the correct custom recovery image and copy this into the tools folder of the SDK. And install (got instructions for this to).
!HELP!
Which custom recovery image should I use? and which Rooted Gingerbread ROM is most popular ?
After installing the custom Recovery can I just flash a custom ROM? I've seen something about SU.zip mentioned, is this necessary?
If I can just flash a custom ROM, I do this by downloading and copying the custom ROM of choice to the root of my SD card. Start phone in recovery mode and install from SD? I then install the google add ons .zip (if required) using the same method.
Sorry for such a long post and so many questions but I can find all the information for what I'd like to achieve but not in one place and nowhere in any chronological order.
Any advice appreciated .
Please read the Wiki, "Root" guides, "Unlock bootloader and install custom ROM" thread. Execute until the point of installing custom ROM.
Look in "Recovery" section for recoveries, install the latest Amon_RA.

Good show with unlocking the bootloader, it's the best way.
However... looking at your flag, you're in the UK... this means your phone is still in warranty, as we get 24 months.
Nooooo

My understanding was 12 months but, your probably right. I've unlocked the bootloader now and fortunately my N1 is in good condition, funtioning correctly ( well at least for now, I'll have to cross that bridge if and when I get to it )
Getting on to custom recovery, I realised something wasn't quite right after my first attempt. I installed custom recovery but without su.zip on my SD card. I managed after rebooting my PC to complete the custom recovery with su.zip on the SD card and was successful in that I've got SU on my N1. However I am quite sure I do need to fix something with the recovery, can someone explain what method or how I do this now. I've unlocked the bootloader, I am rooted with gingerbread but with a dodgy recovery.
Or do I do exactly the same as I did with su.zip and push recovery from ADB and flash from SD card, making sure that fix-recovery.zip is indeed on the SD card.
Hope this makes sence?
Any help appreciated.
After I unlocked my n1 I used rom manager for everything else, first flashing clockwork mod, then selecting a stable cm 7 build and flashing that, since then I've done everything through recovery, flashing custom kernels and nightlie builds, I'm currently using cm7 rc4 highly recommend rover theme too!

I've got ROM Manager installed and if I want to try anything it tells me I have to flash clockwork mod recovery, I was unsure if It was safe to do this after using a completely different recovery image to get where I am now.
Sorry for being such a paranoid newbie, but we all got to start somewhere ;-)

I think CM7 rc4 is next, I do want to get Linux up and running though, even if it's in a virtual environment (chroot). and deffinately would like to check some nice themes out, I've not even looked at themes yet, I suppose it's quite easy after unlocking bootloader, installing custom recovery then flashing su.zip though. But still any pointers where to start my quest wouldn't go a miss ;-)
Recovery
its safe to let rom manager flash clockwork, ive done it
I heared about amonRA but it seemed like clockworkmod was more commonly used so I went for that, but yeah it's fine to flash a new recovery, just remember that whilst it's rare things can go wrong, it's YOUR fault not anyone's here regardless of the advice you may get here if your phone gets bricked or screwed up.
That said I'm still new to this but I'm learning as I'm going, just remember to backup your phone using rom manager before doing anything major so that you can always recover your phone/rom.
I started out hacking my nokia 5800 so was keen to have a go with the android platform.

[Q] soft bricked ls980

so i got my g2 back from lg after getting the screen repaired. and of course they set it back to stock. now i expected this and made a backup of cyanogenmod thinking i could just root put on a recovery and reflash the backup and be done super quick.
well i had a hell of a time getting the recovery on but its on there now running newest philz however after I flashed my backup i got stuck in a boot loop. luckily i also kept a copy of the original download of the rom. i checked the md5 and its good however even after doing a clean wipe and install of the base rom i still get stuck in a boot loop. this has been a huge headache and i have no idea what i did wrong.

well unless you have adb access to push a zip to your device then that means another trip back to stock(I know what it means to be out of space which is why I actually have an otg with pendrives as my backup) and after that you might want to try one of the latest nightly's and if it still bootloops then there just might be something broken in the builds, you would have to get support from someone who uses the same device/cm

Recovering from no OS installed and no ROM or Backup present on the phone. (help plz)

So it has been rough week for me. My luck was so bad I went thru 3 phones. This all started last week when I flashed rom on my nexus 6p. Apparently I had vendor issue so I erased everything in twrp and then tried to restore everything back. This is when bad luck began. The rom went on Bootloop and wouldn't work. The phone wasn't booting I thought maybe since I just installed it might take while, turns at after 5 hours all i got was very very hot phone. I was like everything is fine I can just flash all other roms i have in twrp for just incase. I booted into twrp and it started asking me for password. When i tried to log in it wouldn't work so I went into allow modification mod. I couldn't do nothing major there so I " This is where I F$%* up " Formatted the whole thing thinking ill be back on stock. Everything was gone and I mean everything I started freaking out then I remembered I can just connected to internet and put rom and gapp file on phone folder and flash it in twrp. Well That didn't work either because when I flashed both files it's in bootloop still. Someone please help. I also broke my backup phone nexus 6 that I had in same day this happened. When I tried to take my brother moto x play I found out he bricked it. I really really need help. What should I do and please don't mind me and "noob" at this.
