Guys,
Have any of you come across a 'decent' Art & Drawing application?
I know there are quite a few but I'm looking for one that has realistic brushes/palette and tools.
It 'must' have an ability to use 'smear' where I can smear many colours or do a graduated colour spread.
Another nice to have would be 'pressure sensitivity' ~ whereby applying various forms of pressure gives off varying brush thickness.
Thanks in advance.

Bother..... Just realized I've posted this in the wrong section. Should have gone in the Themes and Apps section....
Staff, please relocate, my apologies.

I've been looking for one to, but they all seem to be just very basic finger paint programs.

That's the trouble which I have found as well.
Besides my profession I have a passion with photography and drawing.
I would handsomely pay quite a lot of there were an Art package available that you could use properly for sketch and watercolour.
Again, if anyone has any ideas please do let us know.
Not found anything that is pressure sensitive, not sure if that's even possible. I found a simple sketch app that simulates the effect based on the speed of your finger.
There might be a opportunity here for someone. I used to write art packages, but now that I work in computer graphics, I'm not sure I have the same enthusiasm for doing it in my spare time.

Pressure sensitivity is possible Mark, well on Windows Mobile that is...
There's a title named DynaInk which supports pressure sensitivity and has very basic smudging effect built in.
What was the name of the title you found and did it support 'smudge/smear'?
With all the titles available one would like to believe there must be an App available that can mimic an artists drawing/painting board.
It was Sketcher, it doesnt support the features you're looking for Mike, but with the Sketchy brush selected did allow you to get several colours on top of one another in an air-brush type fashion.

Thanks Mark found it..... I like the idea but you are right, it's not my cup of tea.
Did find one of interest ~ Magic Doodle Lite
It only has the single brush in the Lite version but it does allow you to graduate your colour if you use a specific brush fill pattern.
The Pro version has 35 real artist brushes (not 8 as the Market mentions), prismacolour, acrylic, hue & saturation, pencil colour, van gogh oil, rembrandt watercolour, skin tone, cool colours, weak saturation, grey saturation, 3 greys sacle, victorian, nocturne.
More drawing & painting tools.
Eyedropper to select colours fro your paintings.
Extra zooming from 50% to 1000%
Colour bucket to quickly fill closed forms and shapes.
Smudge tool.
Symmetrical drawing tool.
Premium also has search for painting ideas.
65 modern style patterns for more inspirations.
24 colourful ethnic art models for training.
Pro version costs E1.39 (USD 1.96)
Have not installed or tried, but Picsay might be worth tying.
I have not tried this
So not sure if this is what you looking for

Picsay is more a Photo Editor than a dedicated drawing program.
There's little to no art tools.

DoodleDroid again works with Photo's.
Basically I need to work from a blank canvass just as you would if putting chalk, pastel, paint, etc on paper.
Thanks guys.
Not what I am seeking but I do appreciate the feedback.
So has anyone found anything better yet? I haven't had much luck in finding anything good.

The nearest I have found is Magic Doodle.
The Lite version only has the single brush whereas the full has quite a lot more.
I've given myself to looking until the end of July. If I can't find anything further to my needs then I'll pay for the full version.

It's a moronic comparison of two entirely different technologies.
Google isn't paying anything to the big techno blogs sites so what do you expect?
I've seen articles ranging from explaining how Google steals all your dataz and kills your dog to how google is bribing carriers and phone manufacturers to adapt android. The only thing you should do is to utilize your own judgement and get used to tech sites being like this. This isn't going to change anytime soon.
As I understand it the phone has the pixels it says it does it just doesn't utilize them properly, it also doesn't utilize RAM properly, I think it could also utilize the 5mp camera and 1ghz processor better.
The point is that the phone seems like it was rushed to the market and I believe a lot of the problems can be addressed with software updates. I just hope Google finishes whatever is taking all of their time so that the issues can be addressed. But I do think that so many of the issues can be resolved and this phone can truly become a "superphone". The nexus is taking a lot of well deserved criticism lately but Android has the ability to respond and improve the nexus/android experience without hardware overhaul, and I believe that's very shiny silver lining...
There's always some problem with every device. The only problem with nexus one is that it has no major issues, just minor ones which are being highlighted by iPhone lovers. AMOLED is a new technology, so things are different.
so he created some stippled greyscale pictures that produce artifacts because of the way the pixels are arranged on the N1 screen.
so what? like who looks at stippled greyscale pictures using their N1 anyway?
I also took a picture of some of the status bar icons using a digital camera in macro mode and my screen does not look like his picture of the 3g icon at all.
Its all about how the eye perceives images, forget that pseudo science. The AMOLED screen on the N1 is the best screen I have seen on any phone, black levels are incredible and contrast is good.
text is readable at a smaller font size than other phones.
If the N1s screen does have faults in the implementation of AMOLED then we can expect even better screens in the future using that technology, but as of today it is the best IMHO
Ha!

To be fair, many of us do recognize the fuzziness of the text and the article explains why that is happening. Perhaps a better statement (whether or not the tone of the article supports it) would have been "Your N1 has a beautiful sharp display that wows people, but the text seems a little fuzzier than you would expect for such a nice screen. Why the difference?"
I think the text can look a lot better with the right tweaks to the text rendering code, but either they tried and didn't get it right or they simply haven't created AMOLED-specific text rendering routines yet.
I'm sorry, but I'm not seeing this fuzzines of which ye speak.
I don't see the fuzzyness either.... and I got the best vision a human has... I read the bottom smallest lines at the eye doctor....
But whatever
Edit... after closely looking at it I see on the right of words a little fuzzy look, all I got to say is.... Bwahahahaha lame, I don't give a ****... nexus one is beautiful Lmaooo picky people...
Haters gonna hate.
This is so funny. I work in a design oriented field. While I do not plan on designing on the phone (probably would if the right apps come out!), I do use it to show and review design work. This phone does everything I need it to do. If it's good enough for me and my clients I'm guessing it is good enough for most. Hate on.
The screen is beautiful with its deep blacks, but unfortunately the color temperature is way off. It's evident just looking at it, and comparing side by side with my calibrated monitor it shows quite clearly that it's way too blue.
I've googled around, but couldn't find a way to adjust the color. However, I noticed that the video player app gives you the option "Color Tone", providing you with Normal, Warm and Cold. Warm isn't perfect but it's a whole lot better than the default. The interesting thing is that choosing a different color tone not only changes the color for the video playing, but for all the ui elements as well, including the notification bar...
Of course once you exit the video player color goes back to normal... so is it possible to make an app that can apply this color tone change to the entire system?
actually that's the way it supposed to be, more blueish / redish something like that, there was a Documentary somewhere here in the forum that explains why.
it is just the way how the AMOLED screen is designed.
to me, it's perfect!
some people that are used to LCD or other similar screens are not used to it.
Color temp is color temp, no matter the tech. If you like the way it is that's great, but I'd like to know if it's possible to modify it. As demonstrated by Samsung's video player it appears to be so.
Oleds have a ridiculous gamut, while not "proper", I actually like, and maybe that's what you're referring to when you say it was designed that way.

You're talking about the Desire/Nexus One screen being red/pinkish? Well the Samsung is the opposite; it is slightly too green/blue. It's not too far off though, but I'm not aware of how to recalibrate it.
Did a little digging into the source code. Looks like this is controlled by Samsung's "mDNIe" code, see s3cfb_mdnie. As far as I can tell there's several hardcoded modes like "mDNIe_VIDEO_WARM_MODE" or "mDNIe_UI_MODE", etc... I think this is what the video player is using to adjust the screen color.
Unfortunately I don't know anything about android development... anyone has any idea if we can use this in our own apps?

Interesting...maybe in a short while someone will come out with an app to be able to adjust the settings?
I took some pictures of my four Vibrants and was surprised to see how blue my screen was compared to the other three. To be honest, I actually like it. My phones #4 to the far right, which is obvious from the pictures.
Either way...the screens are amazing!

any new updates on why some of these phones have a blue tint and others don't. Still wondering if I chould exchange it, I've put my Vibrant side by side next to Epics, Fascinates, and Captivates, some have blue tints, some don't
Really odd, I can't figure out if I like it or not, my eyes are so trained over the years to more warm and yellow toned whites, this blue thing is throwing me for a loop.
supercurio is currently implementing a color correction fix in his Voodoo kernel, but it is still not finished. The color correction is active only at 100% brightness at the moment.

I am debating on whether to buy a NST to read manga on but before I do buy it I wanted to know if mangas look good on it. There are a few ways to view them like converting the manga with Calibre or using Mango (PocketManga). I was wondering if the text is legible or do you need to bring the tablet right near your eye to see anything? Please let me know how what manga experience you have on the NST if any at all.
I have several manga with each page in jpg format, and using a free tool I found I was easily able to convert each manga into a single epub file that can be used with the nook WITHOUT even rooting, using the stock reader.
There is no zooming in the stock reader, but I've found I don't really need it at all. Text is perfectly legible and I don't need to hold it up to my face and squint. Then again I do have excellent vision.

Thanks, that is reassuring, I will probably buy it now.
I have PocketManga, the downloading for offline reading and all works like it should. Reading the manga requires you to scroll up and down the page because it doesn't fit the screen which is annoying. And it doesn't look THAT great, but passable.
With the NoRefreshToggle app the scrolling goes better, but then it looks very bad because it has no grayscale then, just "black" and white.
The text is very readable, even if it's small. And you need at least a little night lamp with a 7W compact fluorescent lamp or 30W regular.
Perfect viewer is also very good, you generally don't need to scroll with it

Hmm norefresh takes away greyscale? That is a deal breaker. I'm sure if we looked around we could easily find an app, or configure an app to scroll with the hardware buttons. The nook's screen is big enough though that you don't really need to fit width; fitting by height is fine anyway.
Oh, and I have the nook simple touch glowlight. If you're going to get a nook, get that one; it's pretty insane that they didn't have a backlight to begin with. Probably a marketing ploy. I mean, I haven't seen a screen without a backlight since the gameboy advanced...
The glowworm does not have a backlight, and neither do any of the e-ink Kindles nor any other e-ink device that's currently being sold, as far as I know.
The glowworm has a bank of lights under the top bezel that shine down, and those are well implemented.
The only prior self-illuminated e-ink screen was in a Sony from a couple of years ago, and people hated it - the illumination was very uneven and the battery drain was apparently fierce.
You actually can't have a backlight on an eink screen, since the screen is opaque. This is part of why Amazon recently bought a company that manufactures ribbon lighting, so the next generation of eink kindles will also have onboard illumination.
The Mirasol technology displays are interesting - they are somewhat like e-ink in that they are highly readable in full light, but they are backlit for indoor reading. The battery life on that technology is better than on LCD screens but not as good as on e-ink, and the first reader using one commercially was released in Korea last year to generally mixed reviews. (These are color displays, but the colors are nowhere near as rich as on an LCD and refresh rate is also not yet up to par.)

Well that explains why the technology wasn't implemented sooner; nonetheless, I was never really interested enough in an eink display to actually make the purchase until I saw the nook simple touch glowlight.
I've always thought eink was an interesting concept, but I could never justify investing in an electronic device with a screen that could not be seen in the dark (or even just in poor light); but I will say that the 1-2 month battery life was probably my biggest interest in purchasing this.

There are two sites with nearly identical names... The one you seem to mean is .org and is unreachable with Opera Mobile. The other one, which has an "s" at the end of the name and is a .com can be reached using Opera Mobile.
Both sites can be reached with Opera Mini although I didn't try to access any material.
As for the first site and Opera Mobile, it uses a Cloudflare certificate for authentication and there is no Cloudflare certificate in our cacerts.bks. The second certificate it uses we do have. But...the last time I tried to add in a Cloudflare certificate it made no difference for the site someone was asking about. It may simply be that the page (which is crowded with stuff) is just too much for Opera Mobile to handle. If you want to try adding in the Cloudflare certificate, see https://forum.xda-developers.com/t/nst-g-how-to-managing-cacerts-bks.4197451/
I read the thread about the apps for artist and even bought layer paint because of good review. I have also tried some free apps mentioned for drawing and the smoothest seems to be TV paint (for sketches). I cant afford to buy all the other apps right now to try it. So my question is, is there any app that is meant for drawings but as smooth as TV paint with palm rejection, pressure sensitivity and layers function? I know we can draw on TV paint but it seems too complicated. Anyone found a nice app with smoothness for sketching?
Also question to people who have updated Jelly bean. How is the Photoshop touch? Please can you mention the difference compared to ICS.
I have Autodesk Sketchbook pro for tablets, and it's the best app out there IMO. I've seen other reviews saying the same. It's quite cheap too.

TV Paint looks complicated, because its not actually a paint tool, its a full animation studio. I had a play with it the other day... impressive, but complicated!
I will learn it anyway though, there is also a help manual on the TV website.
As far as free apps goes... theres a free version of sketchbook pro, but I'm not sure what features it has locked because it is free. Theres a free version of Infinite Paint (Note) as well, which is a version specifically designed for the galaxy Note.

In my experience, it doesnt palm reject. Im always zooming around or lines are just flying away from my point. I've gotten into the habit of working on LectureNotes but theyre all line drawings, ill try coloring soon and will report back.
I heard the same thing that sketchbook pro doesn't have palm rejection. I rest my palms alot and it's a must have for me. I can afford to buy few apps and test it but not all that was mentioned in the other thread. But damn TV paint is so smooth. Wish they could release an artist version.
I use sketchbook pro and don't seem to have trouble with my palm now, trick is to enable hovering pen icon in settings annd when you paint make sure the hovering icon is showing before putting your palm down and as long as you have that icon showing it you won't leave marks with your palm although it may zoom in and out sometimes but that's better than marks or lines

Constructive criticismare very welcome as ive seen that virtually everyonr here is a lot better than me at drawing and I will gladly listen to any advice you have. Never had lessons in digital drawing eh? You are on the right track. Great shading and use of colors and depth. It may not be realistic looking, but you have a talent that many (including myself ) wish they had.

My self-portrait contribution. Auryn Ink app. You can't damn save or underlay a reference picture, and the worst - erases the entire what you are working on if you rotate or press the back button. Though the closest to replicating watercolor behavior.
I didn't mean to make it as a formal portrait. I've be done lots of those for other people. Quick sketch. Unfinished drawing. I'm happy with the way it is.

Looks good to me. I'm still getting used to drawing on a tablet and the main thing I have learned is not to be affraid of layers and as a general rule build up a drawing from back to front. I'll try and get something up this week. looking to do my rough sketch and outline work this week. I'll end up with quite a few layers on mine. Rough outline. sketch. ink. then varous shading layers. 1 for back ground. 1 for skin. 1 for hair and 1 for details and a colour layer.
Looks like you have the patience and thats the hardest thing to learn (something I'm still struggling with). Keep up the good work.
Spent 20-30 minutes starting my initial sketch. layerpaint. first layer was rough outline and general shapes (done in pencil. 100%. red). then i added a new layer to start my sketch proper. pencil. 60%. black.
I'll continue my sketch to get more detail in it then move it to a different app to shade. I'm thinking clover paint, as it can import PSD files and unlike sketchbook pro, has a smudge/ blend tool but I haven't confirmed that it does all that I want it to yet so have not purchased it as of this moment.
I may do some more tonight, but my girlfriend is getting on at me to finish editing our photos from our weekend in brighton 2 weeks ago so she can make one of them her profile picture. More to follow...
Imported into clover paint and coloured. Shading still to do. Need to practice hair.

Good!
I've been doing portraits since my secondary school. The biggest thing i learned about after 2 decades of of on and off doing portraits is just being lose. Going with the flow. Yours is such.
A lot of people consider portraits to be the hardest to do. Not really so. All drawings have the same principles of edge, angles & proportions, shape, and shades & shadows.
All you need is the 50% light - 50% dark formula for contrasting.

I think it's a very nice drawing hertsjoatmon, I like how you've made the eyes look so natural, thats the part where I always fail. When I draw eyes i either fail completely while drawing the left one, or i get the proprtions totally wrong
