After Rooting 2.2 is done...

am i still able to flash to other roms or mods without losing root? sorry im pretty new at this and i just finished rooting. i cant get wifi tether to work nor can i figure out how to remove bloatware from sprint. thanks for your help =)
That's the whole point of rooting..to flash custom ROMs and other mods. Go to the development forum and try one of the custom ROMs out. The instructions on how to install should be with each ROM. Have fun!

[Q] How do I flash a kernel?

Hi, new here and kind of an android noob, I would like to know how to flash a kernel to my epic 4g, if it requires root, if I need to first flash a non-stock recovery, and if flashing a custom kernel will give me root if it does not first require it. If a similar question has been submitted and answered prior to this date then assist me in becoming aware to its presence if you would not mind.

The easiest way is to start with a custom recovery (non-stock) that will let you flash another kernel or rom: start here (you do not need root to flash this custom recovery )
A lot of the custom roms/kernels have root built in- if not it is simple to use the one click stickied to the top of the dev forum- good luck
Thank you very much jimmyz, you answered my questions with great proficiency.

going from cm7 to ICS

hi all I have the ATT nexus S and am very confused with all the posts.
I would like someone to point me in the right direction for the best way to get my phone from CM7 to ICS
sorry if this has been posted already but i have been reading and cannot find a concrete answer.
TIA!!!!
Wrong section. Anyways Flashing this from CWM recovery is just fine. No issues at all.
This belongs in the q&a section but to answer your question the easiest way would be to use this rom
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=20402775 it is rooted and you won't loose your cwm.

Wait for a proper ROM posted from the OTA 4.0.3 and then flash that. There is not a proper ROM posted yet. Do not flash any of what you see right now as you may loose the custom recovery and don't restore the nandroid from that thread.
Wait. Its almost here. Have patience.

I think it is better if we stick to cm7 until cyanogenmod releases its official ROM for nexus s because there are some good features in it which can not be found in any other ROMs

Is a proper ROM. Doesn't loose root. But if you wish to wait its your call.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1063664
If you have a I9020T or I9023 model, flash the respective LATEST (2.3.6) official gingerbread flashable rom, then download the update to ICS.
However doing this will lose clockworkmod + root. Though it's not too hard to regain those privileges.
thanks all i appreciate it and if i posted this in the wrong section i apologize
please remove it if need be
thanks again

Yeah, this is the easiest way for GSM phones already using a custom recovery/ROM.
I just tries cm7 for the first time. Haven't even had it 24 hours. I was running liquid nexus bread and what a nice change cm7 is. Way smoother! Why rush for ICS? I don't get it....??!!
Stay rooted and wait for a nice steady well built ICS rom... JMO

Video tutorial to Root N7000(ICS/GB), use root explorer

1.This is guide How to root galaxy Note (N7000) running on ICS (4.0.3/4.0.4) -Dedicate to Newbies
THIS METHOD IS SEEMS RISKY, AS CWM.ZIP CONTAINS BAD STRING AND CAN DAMAGE DEVICE.
THATS WHY DOWNLOAD LINK IS REMOVED AND VIDEO ALSO NO MORE PUBLIC.
Discussion will be made on
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1329360
--------------------------
2.How to root N7000 Running on GB ROM (rootable)
GB ROMs which are not directly rootable have to first downgrade to rootable ROM
OR can flash pre rooted ROM
further guide and discussion will be here

-------------------------------------
3. How to copy/delete/edit/change permission with Root explorer
Since I'm a newbie at this stuff, just wanted to ask if rooting my Note would erase the data stored in my phone memory?
Also, should i make a backup of all the data incase anything goes bad??
P.S - thanks for the tutorial..
Rooting, doesn't erase anything.
But yes it is always advisable to keep backup of your important data, though you may have limited option to backup on unrooted device. some suggestion
Contact - inbuilt import/export or google sync
Msgs - use SMS restore backup appl
Applications - Non root version of My backup application. though you can backup only app not data of appl like game level, credential etc.
Haha
Classic Music Dr...
Thanks for the suggestions.
One last query. Is it necessary to flash another ROM after rooting the phone? If so, could you please suggest me an easy to use ROM and a tutorial on how to flash it would be really helpful!
P.S - I apologize for being such a newbie but this is the first Android phone I'm using!

In short - No.
No need to flash another ROM once rooted although it's preference. You can happily root your stock ROM and maintain root access which will allow you greater control and of course the ability to run Root only apps.
If you wanted to try out other ROM's, check out the development section, Most ROM's have a video or step by step walkthrough on how to install..
No need to apologise, and if you've not used it already - here's a great thread that should answer a lot of your questions;

Flash custom rom
Hi,
I followed the steps given in the video and was able to root successfully.
Now, Can i directly flash the custom ROMs (for eg. ICS Stunner 1.6.26 which is an ICS ROM) through CWM?
I read a warning that said flashing custom ROMs on ICS kernels can lead to a hard brick and that we need to flash a safe kernel like Abyss Kernel.
Here is a screenshot of my About Phone.

[Q] New to this Forum

Hey guys. If the title didn't apply, I am new to this forum. I just came from The evo 3d. Switched to this phone. While I think its very cool, I noticed that this forum does not have many ROMs or mods to play around with. That's ok. This phone is only a couple months old so I'm sure with time, more and more development will occur.Anyway to my point. I noticed that my phone is very different than my evo 3d than what I was used to as far as just flashing a recovery and installing a rom or kernel inside recovery. Gaining full s-off etc..
My questions is can someone show me what's different as far as gaining s-off
Method of installing roms
If someone would be kind to point me in the right direction that would be great. Thank you.

Its the recovery that we use with Motorola devices without an unlocked bootloader similar to twrp. We can flash basically anything but kernels and radios I believe. It also forces us to partition our internal memory unfortunately...but it also allows us to boot into multiple different roms without losing settings or apps

Yoo Sparta follow antp121's thread in the general forum for a complete guide on how to use safe strap for installing cm10 or any other rom for that matter. It will really help you! Helped me a lot... Especially me coming from the droid 3 with clockwork mod and no safe strap. Hope this helps.

Thank you guys for all if your very informative information. I will look into these links that were provided for me. I usually go and learn everything I can about a device before attempting to gain root, s-off, or unlocking boot loaders. So far I learned that its not possible to unlock boot loader or gain s-off. Believe me when I was on evo 3d. HTC made it very difficult for us to get s-off by patching up the exploits in the hboot by updating it with every ota update. Luckily, we had some very talented devs to get past the patches and come up with solutions.
I only hope the same could be done with the droid razr's boot loaders. I am just spit balling but would it be possible to petition Motorola to come up with an unlock method and post it on their website like HTC did. Again just spit balling lol
