Wheres Need For Speed??!!!?!?!?! - EVO 4G General

So it was confirmed way back THEN( product-reviews DOT net/2010/05/15/android-htc-evo-4g-need-for-speed-shift-arriving-june-4) That Need For Speed Shift would be available in the android marketplace the same day the HTC Evo Launch's on June 4th.
This date has come and gone now, and STILL there is NO NFSS in the marketplace at all nor any kind of update on what happened to its arival and when the new approx release date is for it.
Now even more troubleing is the release of DroidX evidently is going to come with this game pre-loaded on it. Even worse is according to THIS(youtube DOT com/watch?v=ObySpKmWAh4) NFS will only be available on the Droid X on verizon wireless for the next 30-60days.
WTF happened to the 4th?
I guess worse case is we wait a long time, and a slightly better case is someone finds a way to rip the package from the Droid X and load it on the Evo.

we just gotta get our hands on that apk and test it

Yeah, I emailed EA Sports mobile to see what the deal was with it and have yet to get a response back yet.
I'm pretty pissed that this went form being in the android market on the date of the Evo release to being only on verizon's Droid X for 30-60 days.
I woulda thought it woulda showed up in the system dump but it doesn't look like it did b/c i woulda assumed someone would of pointed that out early on.

Just realized that - changed post - I got a little excited! Thanks for checking me -
Not a prob
Although with the release of the Moto upgrade, and the 2.1 leak, I don't see why the two wouldn't be a simultaneous release.
Pretty nice update live wallpapers included I know that was something people didnt think they would get. Wish eris stuff would be released already. Ugly step child android phone such a bad decision...although I still blame the damn reps when I bought it because they stated eris would have navigation within a month or two of being released. Little did I know at that time how stupid they were
Can't blame them, I think they're commission based.

I don't know - even though the "big" Droid is faster, etc., I really like the form factor of the Eris - it's really is a lot of phone in a nice package - hopefully we'll get this OTA udpate soon and we can get on with enjoying our toys -

Froyo's fast! Will we have it?

So does anyone know if the Evo will ship with Eclair (2.1) or Froyo (2.2)? I ask because I read an article today that said the built in JIT in Froyo is getting 37 MFLOPS on the Nexus One as opposed to the 6 MFLOPS in Eclair. If we are only going to have 2.1 on release I really can't wait until it's rooted so we can get 2.2.

The Evo will ship with 2.1 - mod 1.
However, there are rumors that once the phone is turned on, it will be prompted for an OTA 2.2 update -- The other rumor is that FroYo has already been put on some of the test Evo units, and will be out within six weeks of launch of the phone...
Then there's always the pessimists who say: The Moment and Hero has taken a millennium, so Sprint is gonna screw us over on the Evo too.
Believe what you will.

That gargantuan increase in speed is a bit misleading. The program they're using an application called LINPACK.
LINPACK is a number-crunching application that has performance properties that are almost the opposite of most types of software. Floating point operations are very easy to speed up with a JIT compiler (which is what Froyo is doing).
General purpose code is much harder to speed up. I wouldn't expect more than a factor of 2-2.5x speedup for the first generations of the compiler. But it'll still be a big improvement, I'm sure.
What's the big change with froyo, why is it so much better?

Think of it like the performance increases with every later release of Windows and Mac OSX. Versions of Android up to this date have been pretty rough around the edges; 2.1 is the only version that manages to show off what the operating system can really do. As time goes on, Google will refine it more and more, to the point where crashes and lag are virtually nonexistent.

I hope since this will be Sprint's flagship phone, they will actually treat it like it is after it is released.
evo = Froyo?
www.google.com/m?hl=en&gl=us&client=ms-android-google&source=android-unknown&q=will+evo+get+froyo?
I spoke with a sprint store clerk the other day, he said that the evo will get the FroYo update soon after the nexus one, or so he thought.
I'm sure someone on XDA will have a JIT hack working for the EVO well before an official 2.2 update anyway... there's a JIT patch available for the moment and while it's a bit buggy (I had random reboots for a day before it stabilized) it already works. and the community for the EVO will be much larger than that of the moment

I second that. And I'd be that the froyo would be on EVO WITH sprint support since flash would work very well on the 4g network. This could boost Sprint back up from their bad names.
And those sprint reps usually don't know too much... unless they are on these forums and are phone fanatics like the rest of us.

I would almost count on the EVO not getting FroYo for a long time because Android 2.2 comes with built in wi-fi hotspot capability. A feature Sprint will be hoping to sell you at +$30/month. Unless they decide to cripple that aspect of 2.2 so they can continue to charge for their own version of it.

I bet we get it. Sprint and HTC will want to push a f****on of these things out to customers. The best way to do that is to keep them updated. It'll be Sprint's flagship phone for the next year.
Mod Edit: Please watch your language. Thanks.
who knows whether or not Froyo will come to the Evo, but this is one positive sign. where google used to be promoting the nexus one, they still are (on tmobile) but if you click on "Get Your Phone" at google.com/phone you'll see Google mentions the Evo if you have Sprint:
"For Sprint, you can pre-register for the HTC EVO 4G, a powerful Android phone with support for Sprint's 3G & 4G network. Go to sprint.com to pre-register now!"
https://www.google.com/phone/choose?hl=en&gl=US&s7e=
so basically at least google is paying attention to and acknowledging this handset... not a bad sign
Agreed. I'd really doubt that Google would totally neglect a device they themselves are pushing on their own website. Furthermore, Sprint kind of needs this update to make at least some of the features of the Evo work in the first place. If they were to block the update altogether, the phone wouldn't sell nearly as well as they'd like it to.
No one knows for sure. This is because these companies have serious commitment issues and refuse to announce anything until they have to. There is no logical reason to suspect that this phone won't have a FroYo release very soon. I must say I'm rather annoyed that it won't have it at release since I see no reason they couldn't have been working on it this past month or two. Google needs to find some contractual way to light a fire under the handset manufacturers/service providers collective arse to ensure they stop dragging their feet on updates. It only hurts them in the end.

It won't be Google that neglects the handset, it'll Sprint if it happens. I personally feel that it will ship with 2.1 and won't be immediately updated with Froyo. Most people who will buying the EVO won't know of benefits (if any) of Froyo. Sprint usually likes to sit on updates to make sure all their apps (Nascar - good grief) continue to work as expected.

I know that quality android devices are being rapidly released, but the X is still a cornerstone device for the verizon and motorola. So i can't imagine that it won't at least get gingerbread.
Hope I Didn't Screw Up
I started with the Droid 2, but I fell in love with the Droid X - more memory, more screen real estate. I figured that I could wait a few weeks for them to get the same update to 2.2 that I ALREADY HAD with the D2. Someone please tell me that I didn't make a major mistake. I'm committed now. Once I switched out to the D2 this evening - VZW said there will be no more switches. I thought I made the right choice...now I'm starting to feel a bit of trepidation. Please help me brothers and sisters. I waited 3 weeks just to get this phone, please don't tell me that Motorola is going to pull a Microsoft. That's why I left those bastards at AT&T...I got sick of Microsoft's games with WinSlo 6.1, then 6.5, but only if you buy this new type of phone. I love the Android system. I wanted to see what the regular stuff looked like before I started 'rooting' and 'flashing ROMs' like I was doing nearly every week with Windows. Please tell me I haven't waited and sacrificed for nothing.

End of life means the device will not be sold anymore at the specified date; however, support for the phone will continue.
never expect a phone to have continued support. The d1 was just dropped from the list of devices that can handle flash. Even though it was the phone they were using to show off flash on android.
Expect the worst, hope for the best...

Why so many E-penis threads?

I really don't get it, someone posts a legitimate thread, take for instance the thread about Froyo 2.2 and you have people, from an EVO forum come and rip on the device and Samsung. I just dont get the point of trolling another forum, when all of these phones are running android operating systems. I mean do iPhone 3GS people from iPhone 3G people and iPhone 4 people troll the 3GS and the 3G, I really dont know and couldnt tell you but the immaturity is just astounding.
I too would like to know when 2.2 will be released, this is a very good question but for someone to post this and not get any useful information other than the usual. Oh if samsung doesnt have an update out by the end of this month im going back to the EVO or some other phone...Well I felt like ranting.
Also, many people have been saying many phones will be having 3.0 Gingerbread by the time we have 2.2 Does this have any merit to this?
No clue to 2.2 and no clue to 3.0. Really... I have no clue.

There are rumors of 2.2 hitting us in October\November. Gingerbread doesn't get released til January I believe.
I said that I'm not willing to stick with the Epic past the 30 day return period for a reason. We all know that Samsung as a company has been flakey with updates.
I paid a good deal of money for a device that I expect to be supported and updated within the companies own claimed schedule.
Stating that I'm gonna switch to a different phone if the company proves to not be reliable only means that I'm NOT going to get roped into a 2 year contract with the phone when I could exchange the phone within the 30 day period, and get a phone that IS being supported or even canceling my Sprint plan and going back to TMobile.

Good for you. I think what Blitz is saying here is that nobody in the Epic forums really cares about people who aren't using the Epic. And I agree. I didn't go in the EVO forums and tell everyone that I'm switching to the Epic because of all the reasons I like it more. Ya know why? They don't care.
Its cause the people on the EVO forums are jealous of the hardware on the device so they need to justify their purchase by bashing ours :/
As for Froyo, we will know better by end of September as samsung promised to release Froyo by then (rumor pins it at sept 23rd)..once we have a basis it will be easier to predict...my only concern is that if they are gonna do Froyo my guess is it will be about time to give us TouchWiz 3...so if that would delay things I don't know...a person on the other forums said a sprint rep told them Epic is gonna get update with all the other Galaxy S phones (but we all know how reliable sprint reps are)...I guess thats all I can say...

There's also people who claim to be reps making promises and when it turns out to be different people get mad. Personally I wouldn't trust any information from a "rep" as they could be lying at the fact they are a "rep." I believe we will get an update as the CEO of Samsung stated we will. He didn't say when so they have from then till the end of the world to deliver unless he specified a date.
As my father says "The internet is full of people who will lie to you, and it's best to not trust any information unless it comes from the source."
Well, people did say the Epic was getting an MR on Sep 16, and sure enough, it did.
I've had some faith restored in Samsung. Either way, I'm already pretty happy with the phone, and even if they didn't release 2.2 (which I'm pretty confident they will), someone else will.

But they did keep their word. It was released on the 16th. They didn't say "to everyone" or "on the 16th and ONLY the 16th" they said "release on the 16th".
We can't assume something and then get mad because our assumption doesn't match the facts.

I'm on SERO patiently awaiting 10/1 so I can upgrade and was on the fence for Evo v/s Epic. My experiences with HTC devices on WM have generally been very good (although as a WM power user I've long since given up waiting on the manufacturer for software updates.) Still, I know the general rep of HTC was much stronger than Samsung in this space and I'm hoping I won't have to spend as much time tweaking my device once I switch to Android - I'm hoping to just sit back and USE it more as an average joe would.
But despite Samsung's track record I'm rather optimistic about their possibilities this time as they seem to be putting a LOT of effort behind the entire Galaxy lineup/brand. I just have a hard time seeing them doing that without offering decent update support. Right now I'm leaning toward the Epic as hardware's just extremely compelling. I'm actually optimistic/hopeful that by 10/1 I'll be able to buy one that'll ship with Froyo already installed.
wow, samsung managed to get their own revenue generating product out on time. that restored my faith in their priorities. At this point, I really love the epic, but unless sprint fixes the upload speed or waives the data fee, its not really worth the price.

yeah before any of the EVO can even begin to open their mouths about 2.2, they really need to look at the facts. As a sprint store tech, i get to see every evo that comes in with all their problems. just a few:
1. 2.2 update OTA ruined alot of EVOs. the OTA update could have saved the /data/app and wiped everything out on the phone, but instead it just installed and about 38% of them had to come in and get their phones wiped out just so it could even be used. we wont talk about the number of devices that dont have connectivity to 4G afterwards.
2. Battery life on the EVO sucks. even with newer bfs kernels. my roomate has the evo. he can generally get up at 8, get back from work at 6 with maybe 20% left (heavy user). My phone on the other hand, (before i flashed the andromeda kernel) i got to work at 9, used the phone heavily to play psx4droid and watch movies most of the day, and still got home 13 hours later with 60% battery left.
3. psx4droid runs flawlessly (minus graphical glitches in psx4droid) on my Epic. 60 frames per second. multi touch screen works to play metal gear solid and Twisted Metal 2 using on screen keyboard. On my roomates EVO, even with a different kernel, multitouch kinda works for 2 keys at once, i can only go 50 frames a second, and is generally more glitchy. airplane mode is a must because if a text message comes through, it glitches and skipps alot.
4. video playback. download an avatar bluray dump. roughly 5 gig mastroka file. place on SD card. beautiful beautiful picture. and its a .mkv file. no need to convert it. no need for anything. drop and watch. Evo....not so much. gotta convert .mkv to a .mp4, drop some of the clairity because the conversion is like 8-11 gigs and thats not easy to just carry around.
but how many Epic users go into the Evo forums and smear this in everyones faces?
to each their own....but ill go ahead and keep mines

I've seen Iron Man 2, Avatar, and Star Trek in 720p. Avatar was actually the same aspect ratio of the phone, which made it look even better. And the colors of Avatar really, really pop on the phone. By far the most beautiful movie I've seen on this screen (not the best, mind you... the movie itself is kinda lame).
I gotta get my epic NOW after hearing all you guys says how good movies look on it. I have a samsung moment

How did you copy over a 5GB file when the file system doesn't let you move a file larger than 4GB?

haha i estimated "roughly 5 gigs" the same way manufacturers calculate their sd cards.
actually its like a 3.9 gig file, i just mistyped a 5 instead of a 4 and was too lazy to go back and correct it.

On my roomates EVO, even with a different kernel, multitouch kinda works for 2 keys at once, i can only go 50 frames a second, and is generally more glitchy. airplane mode is a must because if a text message comes through, it glitches and skips alot.

That is pretty astounding battery life for the epic. Do you take any extra measures to try and increase the epics battery life.
For psx4droid do yoou keep it muted? I have yet to find a game that can run flawless sound. I have only tried 6-7 games but all of them were jerky at best(sound) the video does run very good but get lagged when it has to slowdown to keep the sound synced. Have you tried chrono cross? I love that game but it was not to playable for me.
I got a week "preview" of the epic then returned it when sero premium rumors bubbled up(God bless the 30 day return). Now I am trying to wait until 10/1 to jump back in.

March Upgrade...Evo or Not?

So I have my 1 year upgrade on March 1st, I bought a Optimus S to use so I could hang on to my upgrade, but with no good announcement on Feb 7th I think I will go ahead and get me a Evo. If a new dual core phone comes out in the summer by the time I upgrade again (premier gold, 10 years) that dual core will have some good development going on, like the Evo now. I have heard quite a few things about the launch Evo and another Evo they made, diff hardware or something. Some kernels work, some dont, a bit confusing. Can someone please give a quick break down of what a Evo purchased today can do development wise, kernels/clock speeds, roms, wimax hacks, cm7, all the good stuff! If todays Evo is highly limited maybe holding on to that upgrade would be the better choice. I dont care for the Evo Shift, looks odd to me. To much space on the bottom of the phone. I played with a Epic yesterday, nice screen, but phone felt "cheap".
Thanks

I think one could probably get a pretty clear indication of the what the EVO is capable of by reading just a little bit, so I am not going to recap BUT I will say this. I have always been one to anxiously await the latest and greatest phone until I purchased my Lauch Day EVO. It really is quite good.
If I were you, with a March 1 upgrade, I would wait a few weeks until CTIA to see what gets announced and then make my decision. At least you might have a clearer understanding of what might be coming around the corner.
I already have an upgrade that I am sitting on. Nothing out there that trips my trigger......yet.

As my friend said, "If you always wait until the latest and greatest comes out, you'll always be waiting. If you get upset that something new comes out just after you bought the latest and greatest, you'll always be upset. Just pick [a phone or computer] you're happy with and go with it."
I bought the Evo because I loved my Hero. I simply wanted a faster processor, larger screen and the kickstand. The Evo was perfect for me and I couldn't be happier. It does everything I wanted it to do and more. It's my phone, computer, clock, calendar, contact list, e-book reader, music player and so on. Tinkering with it is a blast too!
I would hold on a little bit more sprint has to dropping a flagship phone soon

I generally agree..... BUT CTIA is literally just a few weeks away. That is when they are expected to make significant announcements.
Of course, I have been salivating over the Echo....not.
Its easy to say hold off while you already have the best phone sprint has out (right now). What attracts me to the Evo right now is the development, it is already there. If I wait and get a new "insert name" I will be at stock until root comes, then be waiting for some kernels/roms. Even if a dual core hit the scene today wont fragmentation be a problem, apps wont even really use that second processor, or would android handle the CPU's? I had a Hero up until 2 months ago when I bought the Optimus S, the S is a good phone, its faster than the Hero and all though I like the Hero's screen better. The S will replacing my wifes Hero, its seen its better days, lol. I put aosp's 2.3 on it, makes me crave CM7 so being "stuck" with a Evo for a year until my next upgrade would not be a bad thing. By then what ever super charged dual core HTC phone becomes the new flagship for sprint ought to be rooted with awesome development already!
Thanks for the replies
Or you could take the route my girlfriend and I have gone towards: When one phone is ready to upgrade, I get it... she gets my old phone.

Yeah, that's my thought process right now. My wife loves everything about her old iPhone 3G . . . except for the part about it being a really lousy phone, lol.
I'm waiting to see when Sprint drops a new (hopefully dual core?) flagship and pick that one up for me and pass this Evo on to her. Going forward, then, we'd both be on Sprint and could play the leapfrog game, too.

I can see you thought it all out... and it makes sense.
I agree... although there are 2 things...
1. 3 months is enough of a lag for me to wait.. to see if the phone will be adopted by devs. This is nearly 9 months. Still a great phone though.
2. htc is announcing big in 3 days... wait till then to re-evaluate.

Why would HTC announce a CMDA device for Sprint at the GSM Association mobile conference?
all i see on there facebook page.. is a count down clock... nothing about gsm
Counting down until the Evo gets Gingerbread officially? (although since I switched to AOSP Gingerbread it isn't as much of an issue as it once was...)
I decided to get the Evo, unless something bad ass will be released within a couple months. I see adds on ebay that have the phone for as low as $100. Has anyone ever used one of the ebay adds/auctions? Sprint always wants big $, heck the Hero is still $250 with a $100 rebate. That's another thing, with the ebay auctions I think they are cheap because the rebates are instant. Any input?
Thanks

yep CM7 GX4 and love every min of it. EVO is still the way to go if I had an upgrade available now I would get another EVO!
id wait a few more months and see what sprint may offer by june. the optimus S is a decent phone compared to the hero. not saying the evo isn't a worthy upgrade but it is going on a year old soon. i wouldn't use my upgrade on it when you can pick one up on craigslist for $250 now.
If you do decide to get the Evo, grab a white one because, initially, white ones were a Best-Buy exclusive. They were only offered in Sprint stores recently. If you pick up a white one from a Sprint store, it'll probably be an 0004 (latest hardware revision, no defects). Also, the white one just feels nicer because it's glossy instead of rubbery matte, so it doesn't show smudges or anything.
This is from experience. I went through 2 defective replacements until they agreed to give me a brand new one after some haggling. I purposely asked for a white one because I knew.
