Fellow Titan Owners...

Being owners when the phone just came out, many have found their New Every 2 to be approaching or already here. When the time comes for the new phone, what device are you leaning toward? Are you staying within the WM arena and going with a Diamond 2 or Touch 2; Webos and Palm Pre; Android and the Hero; or off to the iphone?

Stick with WinMo and just upgrade to a TP2 or similar device (key is a bigger screen, at least 3.5" in the diagonal.)
Iphone or any phone on a non-WinMo operating system is a non-issue. Won't want to do without the Skyfire browser, for starters. The app WMWifiRouter is also important to me (turn phone into a wireless router accessible to multiple devices simultaneously.)
Iphone is too expensive to operate at this point - can't get an Iphone onto my $50 "unlimited everything" prepaid from Boost (Sprint CDMA) with unlimited 3G EVDO data. The same functionality I currently get out of my Titan for $50 a month would cost me around $200 a month on an Iphone plan.

Well I have been thinking about this lately...
My new every two year discount begins in December.
I could still use my Titan and wait for a Windows Mobile 7 device with a keyboard but not sure if I can wait that long.
I could get a Touch Pro 2 even though I wish there was a HD2 Pro instead.
Looking at the Pre and Droid as options too...
It's such a hard decision and hopfully there will be more leaked info on Windows Mobile 7.

Thought about the TP2. Out of stock on the website, not available locally.
Signed up for the Droid emails. We'll see what it's like when it comes out. I need a mainly business focused device (active sync, calendar, contacts), not sure if the Droid will live up to it.
I'm also on the hunt for a new rom to flash to the Titan.. (been on an old dcd rom for a long time now).

I am sorta in the same boat segadc. My NE2 is up with verizon. However the Pre, Droid and Hero sparked my curiousity equally as I think I may want to jump from WinMo. The worry for me is apps. In testing a friends new jailbroken iphone, the realm of apps is limitless. The Pre, drois and Hero all have good points about them but the recent info for Pre release on Vz Network is not until early 2010. I would like to see all three fisrt hand before I decide to stay with Vz or make a jump for the iphone.

Same here. I would have had a TP2 by now if it was ever in stock. Then I started getting info on the droid and I am intrigued.
The business aspect is somewhat less important to me, so I am leaning android at this point. Though I will miss the htc tweaks...

Yeah I signed up for the Droid emails too. If I knew for sure when the first Windows Mobile 7 (with physical QWERTY) is arriving on Verizon, I would definetly stick with Windows Mobile...
Is the TP2 bigger then the Titan? I need to see some size comparisons.

The more I look at the Hero, the more I am a fan I think. I think the days of WinMo may have come to an end. With my NE2 up now and my contract up in Feb...stay with Vz or go to At&T with the iphone. Like I said, I am an app man but the Hero looks rather sweet.

I was in the exact same situation as you. Out of contract and new every 2 available. Plus, VZ took an additional $100.00 off of the cost of any comperable device. I wanted the TP2 in the worst way, but they are unobtainium (except online for $675.00 ), so I got the Imagio, which I was told is an upgraded version of the TP2 without the keyboard. Not true. The TP2 does quite a few things that the Imagio does not.
Comparing the Titan to the TP2, the TP2 feels great in the hand. It is a little on the heavy side, but I like a device that feels solid. The contoured back is very ergonomic and the cooling holes provide for a nice textured feel that doesn't make me think that I'm about to drop it every seven seconds. I especially like the tilting screen. And once you use a phone with a 3.6 inch screen, you will not want to go back to the 2.8 inch on the Titan. Again, sadly the TP2 is not to be found.
The Hero looks good in specs, but so did the Imagio. If the Leo were to be available on VZ, I would certainly give that one a shot. The bottom line is that I am not happy with the Imagio and will most likely send it back. Then I will be right back in that boat with you.

yeah... Same here. I am ready to NE2 and I am a VIP member so the TP2 would cost 199.99 less 100 NE2 and less 50 for VIP. End cost $49.99 on line only (stores don't give the online discount of 100 or the vip discount). If I could find one. I called tech support and got to the higest level. I was told they have some in stock to replace defective units but not for sale. They wouldn't give me any idea as to when they would be in stock. Then they told me they would look into it and send me an email or txt msg. three days later I got a txt: and I quote "(Verizon Wireless) HTC Touch Pro2 is out of stock. Will no longer be sold. Thank You for choosing Verizon Wireless"
So I guess I wait or jump ship.
I went to youtube and watched reviews for the imagio and the tp2 to compare. I was thinking to go to the imagio. But after watching both reviews, I decided NOT to get the imagio. If you want to watch them yourself type imagio and look for the review part 1 and part 2. Same with the TP2.... I think I'll go take a look at the droid specs.....

Just call everyday. They get small shipments pretty often.

I don't think I was really into the TP2 as I wanted something difft. I was a fan of the Hero previously until I saw Motorola's Droid. Though I need to see actual video reviews of the phone and test it out before I buy it, the Droid may be the way I go. I guess we will wait and see.

The biggest thing for me is that the Imagio does not support the video out function. Everybody that I have talked to at VZW and HTC say that "It appears as though the Imagio should support video via accessory cable interface." "Looks" and "should" don't get the picture on my PICO.

I've read this rumor all over the place. Currently they are instock online and in some stores. Why would Verizon discontinue an item that is under such a high demand. My NE2 is up in 2 weeks. I almost got a rep to give it to me early. Anyways, I'll be getting the TP2, unless something changes in 2 weeks.

If you can get the TP2, more power to you. For some reason, VZW says (online and in person) that they are out of stock and will not be getting any more. What part of the country are you in? Another user was able to find one in a San Francisco area store. You say that they are available online. When I go online (signed in or acting as a new customer) it says "NEW!" "out of stock".
Scratch that! I just went on Verizon's web site (I usually check it three of four times a day) and it shows the TP2 in stock!

Hmmm. Well, I think I'll be staying with the 6800 for a bit longer. I've looked at the new stuff, but the problem with the TP2 is that it hasn't got a port for an external antenna and where I work, if you don't have an external antenna, you aren't getting out.
Likewise, I like being able to use my phone as a modem for my laptop. Can't do that on the new Verizon phones, at least as far as I've seen (nor can I seem to get Vista to let me do it on my new laptop, but that's another issue.) The new phones are made for people who work in places where cell coverage is ubiquitous - and that's just not my situation.
For the above reason, obviously the iPhone is out too - though I have a patent loathing for the condescending Apple that precludes such a purchase anyway.

I guess the external antenna is a downfall. But you could just buy a cell phone repeater amp and not need to plug something into your phone everyday. and you could walk around eaiser.

Made the Switch from TP2 to Incredible (video link in thread)

Well, I did it. I got the HTC Incredible on Thursday. I cannot lie, thing this is fast. I will miss my hardware keyboard, but other than that i must say it is amazing.
What did it for me was I was finally able to get a sense build of android 2.1 working on the TP2. I was sold after that, looked at the incredible, specs, and gave it a shot, so far i am VERY HAPPY. The camera on this thing is amazing... Sorry if this was a rant, im not trying to put down the TP2 in anyway as the TP2 was an awesome phone for me for about 6 months lol.

I made the same move, and I couldn't be happier. I'm even getting used to the on-screen keyboard.
If you still have your TP2, go ahead and take it's battery and drop that in the Incredible. The TP2 has the same output but a slightly higher capacity.

I would but I think the person who buys my phone off of eBay will wonder whats up with the bright red battery lol. I must say though, i've gotten great battery life so far with this phone.

average price of a sold unlocked tp2 is about $280... not bad, especially when i got it for $199...

Yep, made the switch too. Can't decide on the ebay route. My only issues so far are battery life, easily fixable, plan on a high cap battery, and no sim card. Good bye Global

I'm getting differing feedback on the Incredible. Is this truly a global phone? In other words, can I use it while traveling to Europe and Asia? Not that I am planning to but I want to be able to. I assume this phone is only available for Verizon.

Not a true global phone. It does not support GSM bands, no sim card. Im not 100% sure where it will work overseas though. Yes right now only Verizon has this phone I believe.

Made the move from ATT Tilt 2, jumping carriers because I just had to have this phone. I'm slightly put off by the battery life, signal issues (which seems to be present in your youtube video too), and the lack of simultaneous voice and data.
Other than those things.. I love it.

What about voice dial compared to the TP2?
On my TP1, once activated, voice dial would tell me what it thought I said and then give me a chance to try again, all with me not pushing any more buttons. AFAIK, the incredible doesn't do that, and that makes me a sad panda

yeah it seems to be an issue, but i still get good reception, even if it is showing nothing.

You can also keep it for when you travel outside of the US for GSM capability (make sure it's unlocked before you leave).

This seems to be the exact thread I am looking for
I played with an Incredible at the store but the way they had the lock device on the phone part of the keyboard was not usable. It also did not have any vibration feedback when you press a key.
I currently have a Touch Pro that is used email both personal and work via Exchange as well as Text messaging for work outages. This leads me to use the hardware keyboard alot, and I have grown to love the dedicated number area on the TP.
For the users who have gone from a hardware keyboard to the Incredible, how was the transition? Is it manageable for longer emails? How is the Exchange support or is it worth looking at Touchdown to manage that? Would it be better just to go for the Moto Droid with it's hardware keyboard for longer communications?

calash, I was following the xdandroid development closely so it was a good test to adjust to the switchover of android before making the jump. Also it's a safe way to test it out (boots android off SD card). Exchange and Gmail sync worked well (using "As email arrives") pulling in all my contacts and OS integration was nice between contacts/emails/google maps/etc.

Saying that GSM is the only coverage you'll get outside of the USA is not really true. There are CDMA providers in most regions. The real trick is what kind of coverage that will be. There are differing frequencies as well as data connections.
I have had CDMA coverage in all the areas I have traveled to. I don't worry about data, because I turn off all data features on my phone when outside the USA. Don't need any nasty surprises on the charges front.

G1 stilll worth getting?

I'm considering jumping to T-Mobile here in a few days, as my Sprint contract is ending. A friend of mine is selling his G1 for pretty cheap in good condition. That combined with the Even More Plus plans sounds like a better deal than being stuck in a contract again for 2 years.
I know the phone is crazy old, but it still seems to have great support for roms and such. I have no problems with rooting and flashing at all.
Also, for the people who are with T-Mobile right now, if I start a Even More Plus plan right now, would I be able to "upgrade" to contracted phone down the road, which would prompt me to the more expensive plan, should I ever get a real itch for a Vibrant or things coming out later this year.

Really no point. On CL in my city g1s are 60 used 120ish new. It still has awsome support but remember, its close to 2 years old.... With technology going at the pace its at, think of it like comparing a 2010 mustang against a very well maintained 1985 mustang. Its definately a usable phone and will make you pleased, but won't compare with the advancements in speed, fuel economy, safety, etc...
If you asked this question 7-8 months ago, I would have totally recomended it. Now, not so much.
P.S. download the APN on/off widget or APNdroid to turn off data, so you can qualify for cheaper talk/text only plans. Data is roughly $20-30 more expensive, plus your phone will be functional under wifi. Plus battery lasts longer

Anyways, if you're getting a contract, don't buy an old phone! Get a myTouch slide or wait for the Sidekick Twist.

I would just get the Vibrant right now, because I think if you come into your contract with a used G1 you can't get a new phone till you're up for an upgrade. Besides, the Vibrant(along with most of the other Galaxy S lineup) is top of the line right now. They are benchmarking higher video framerates than a EVO 4G. Plus it has 720p HD video recording, and HD video out so you can play back what you recorded on a hdtv. Also has a accelerometer and gyroscope, giving it a 6-axis g-sensor for epic gaming. Oh yeah, and it's the baddest phone T-Mo has right now, period.

I purchases my G1 2 months ago, best buy ever (paid 100 uk pound,around 130euro then, with 8GB microsd, ...).
Still no phone with a tilt keyboard yet (had a tilt, htc kaiser, much better then htc pro, but the G1 has a nicer touch screen (the tilt was also running android 2.1).

If your stuck on Tmobile, don't want to spend too much, and want a new phone before your contract ends, then go for it

If you're going the as-cheap-as-I-can route in the short-term, a G1 may do the trick (And, if it were January of 2009, I'd say get the G1.). But, as it's been said before, if you're going to be locked into a 2 year contract, you'll really want to get hardware with enough power to last you those two years and not leave you wanting more.
Personally, if I were buying right now, it would either be a NexusOne or a Vibrant. Something with enough processing power and RAM for Android 2.2+

I got my G1 this past January... and while I don't regret it, there's no chance I'd buy this phone now. Every day I wish this thing had a Snapdragon in it. If you're really worried about contracts go with an unlocked phone for more money upfront - at least with T-Mobile, the plan will be cheaper, so it'll even out.
Again, the G1 is a great phone and I love the design/form factor, but for this day and age it's just not fast enough.

I don't believe you'll be able to take an Even More Plus plan and then go to an Even More plan right off the back, at least not with your same number...but, If you sign up for google Voice at the same time as getting the g1, give out that number to everyone as your new number, when you upgrade your to a contract(if you do), that GV number will still be the same and you'll just have to change the number under your GV settings.
Would I buy a G1 right now? If it was 0-50, maybe 75 with an 8 gig sd card. We've got 2.2 running on our phones now as a daily driver. it makes/receives calls, what more you need from a phone?

I do have one question... why not stay with Sprint? Their plans are competitively priced with T-Mobile, and they have excellent Android devices. The Epic 4G is due out soon, which should be an amazing phone by anyone's standards. And it will have a hardware keyboard, like the G1...
If price is the most important, don't go with T-Mobile. Get an unlocked T-Mobile phone and take it over to Simple Mobile at mysimplemobile.com. They use the same 3G bands as T-Mobile but you get unlimited talk, text, and internet for a flat $60/month.

Well I Just bought one to hold me off until the "Project Emerald" phone comes out. It's better than using a non android phone. I think that using it as a temporary phone it will do the job.

Still an awsome phone but :] mTS 2 for 1 lol

If you don't care about having a fast phone, go for it. I just went from g1 to vibrant, and the vibrant is everything I wanted the g1 to be. The g1 is gonna give you a taste of what android can do, so you may end up wanting something better.

well ive gone from a blackstone (WM) to a G1 and I love it. If you get the right rom it isnt slow and android is just great I love it....also devs are still making stuff for it all the time its great....

[Q] Desire Z as a first Android phone, coming from S60?

My current phone is a Nokia E71, but I'm thinking of going to Android after Nokia's news last week. After doing some research, it seems like the Desire Z is the best option available right now (in terms of phones available unlocked and unsubsidized).
Nokia's have always been known for reception and call quality, so I am a bit concerned that I've been spoiled and won't be happy with the DZ. Any concerns there?
As a final question, is it wise to jump now or should I be saving my money for the dual-core phones we'll be seeing this year? Having some Android experience with an Archos 70 tablet, I know I won't be happy with a device I can't root as soon as I receive it, so the newer devices could mean a long wait.

To be honest, I haven't been too happy with my G2's reception (coming from a Nexus one) but I happen to live in a ****ty reception area so I don't really know for a fact.
Normally I would say wait a month for the new dual core phones, but there has yet to be an announcment on any Dual Core phones with a hardware keyboard. If that is a deal breaker for you, go ahead and buy the Desire Z.
No matter what phone you choose, it is going to be outpaced in a matter of months, so just buy what you feel is the best phone on the market at the time. I am more than happy with my G2 and probably won't be switching untill a much better phone with a keyboard comes out.

Also, I just noticed you are from Chesapeake VA... I used to live in Norfolk =) why are you looking at the DZ? the G2 is the same thing without sense and is cheaper.

I'm pretty happy with AT&T and T-Mobile's coverage isn't as good around here, especially in the fringe areas.
As for the dual-core phones, I am one of those users hanging on to Media net (non-smartphone data), so I need to stick with phones that AT&T doesn't carry, or I'll be "upgraded" to a smartphone plan. The only upcoming dual-core phone that looks interesting right now is the Atrix (although there may be others I have missed), and since AT&T carries it, I would have to switch data plans.

So, from what I've seen. The Atrix did not stand up to all the hype it was given. Mainly because of motoblur, which you can't give rid of because of the locked bootloader.
Listen, the G2 (DZ, whatever) is a great phone, if you keep on worrying about the next best thing you are never gonna get a new phone, Just go for it, I promise you will be happy =)
quick tip, If you want the DZ to work on AT&T 3G get the one from Bell Canada that uses the same 3G bands, otherwise, you are gonna be stuck on edge.

Welcome to the Dark Side. I used to run Symbian-Guru.com, and now I'm here. I *love* my G2 (with a Desire Z ROM on it), it's everything the N97 should have been. You'll likely get similar (though not equal) battery life on the Desire Z to your E71, so that's a plus.
I wouldn't worry about what's coming up - the only new Android device announced at MWC that has a keyboard is a Sony Ericsson, and I wouldn't touch that with a ten foot pole. If you don't care about the front-facing camera (which you probably don't), then the G2 is simply fantastic. There's alot of dev support, as well, so you can easily root it (now), and you can overclock and whatnot.
Another big plus is that the Desire Z/G2 is available officially with a Stock rom and a Sense rom, you can easily switch between them (rather than waiting on someone to port one or the other). I personally prefer Sense, mainly due to the superior camera, music, and contacts applications, but everyone's different.

About the time symbian guru closed down was about the same time i got fed up with symbians lack of inovation. After a string of nokias and samsung i8910 i sold a few of my old phones and brought my first android phone. I will never look back.
G2 is an awesome phone.

I'm in the exact same boat as you. The unlimited media net at $10/month is too good to let go of especially in today's world of mobile data pricing.
The reception on the Desire Z is average. If I had to rate it, I would give it a 7/10. The biggest let down I have noticed is that when using the phone in landscape mode with the keyboard open, my signal drops rather significantly. In most areas, this is not a problem but my home is somewhat rural and my reception here has always been so-so (around 95-105dbm). At home it will sometimes drop me from H to Edge when using the keyboard. Call quality has been solid, never had any issues. The speaker is weak compared to my Blackberry Bold but that phone had an AMAZING speaker, the best I've ever had on a cell phone. I use my bluetooth most of the time and it is loud and clear, speaking directly into the phone is fine as well, plenty loud.
I have used the E71 as well as numerous Blackberry devices. The signal on my Blackberry was definitely stronger (ranged between 90-95dbm in home). Not only was it stronger but also more consistent. Although the DZ has a weaker signal, its not such a difference that it causes problems for me.
All of that being said, the Desire Z is a great device. I loved my Blackberry but the OS was falling behind and the development by RIM was too slow for me. If you need a hardware keyboard and want a great Android device on AT&T's network, then this is a great option. I have mulled going and buying an Atrix as well but I really don't want to pay an additional $15 a month for data AND be limited to 2GB...

That's exactly what I did when I upgraded, and I got the phone that I wanted with the plan that I needed (G2/TM). I wanted a hard keyboard and (initially) Stock Froyo or sense. Reception and battery life have, for the most part been solid.

Considering that your blog was a big part of my decision to buy the E71 in the first place, I guess I'll have to take your advice again and buy the DZ when my tax refund comes in.

Should I get a N1 still?

So here's the deal:
I'm on AT&T, been using an Aria with CM 7 RC for awhile now. I had the Atrix 4g, but after some issues with data connection and figuring "better safe than sorry" when it came to the bootloader situation, I decided it just wasn't meant to be. Now I'm wanting something a little more after the atrix vs my Aria, but I'm still on AT&T for now (family plan), and am hesitant to extend my contract (Inspire is too big anyway)
So my question to you, users of the original Google phone: is it still worth it?
I figure I can buy a nexus one on ebay for ~$400 for AT&T's bands, and sell it again (or keep it because it's so cool) when its time for a new contract. Is it worth getting the N1 at this point or is it getting too heavily outclassed, even with development and the latest software, or is it still kicking strong and will last me until at least some quad-core LTE super nexus 3 comes out?

Keep an eye on the Marketplace forum here. You'll get a good N1 for less than $400.
They are still worth buying if you can get a bargain.

As the seasons change and I'm outside more and the sky is often brighter. The fact that the N1 screen isalmost impossible to see outside is really annoying. Unless you never go outside I'd say stay away from the N1.
Also, the touch screen is awful. Every game must have their touch controls in odd places for them to actually work on the N1. Really makes it feel like a crappy device.
I really do like my N1, but these things were reasons I probably should have returned it over a year ago. No way I'd recommend someone get it now.

At $400, I wouldn't. Quick craigslist search shows several around the country at $200-$250. For that price I would, and if any were in my own backyard, I would probably grab a second one.

Yes its a nice phone. No I would not spend 400 for it now. Aria is a nice phone. Inspire is best deal at this moment. I don't see why u pick up a N1. U get custom roms on aria. If you want new device get a tablet. HTC flyer is on its way or Samsung tab will be out soon.
But don't get me wrong. I love my N1. It's just that their is nothing that interest me at this time. Maybe gte t-mobile g2x. It will be compatible with ATT and its dual core. The best part vanilla android. I wait though and see how it reviews.

First, I LOVE my N1. I run the CM7 nightlies on it, I use Titanium Backup to yank core sys apps from the nightlies that I don't care about. I've got 155 apps on it (thanks to Apps2SD) and SetCPU is running the clock at just a little over stock speed.
And I get to do all that with hardly the hassle others complain of with their non-N1 phones.
The N1 will continue to hold the hearts of Devs for as long as there's nothing with better specs that's as open and easy to work with.
Yes, get an N1, but you can do better than $400 (unless that's including a car or desk dock). If/When Google comes out with a 'real' successor (sorry, a rebadged Galaxy-S isn't a true successor) just sell off the N1 and upgrade.

The N1 is no longer top in class. If you want a pure android feeling, the N1 I'd recommend. But if you want better, then I'm guessing go for the Nexus S... does the Ns have an Att version?
The best thing about N1 is that the OS is android, not some mesh of other bloatware and junk provided by the manufacture HTC, Motorola, and the service provider ATT, Verizon... Of course, you can root, and put on a custom rom, and that's all resolved anyway.

If I lost or broke my N1 today, I would, without hesitation, start the hunt to buy a new one. Unfortunately I'm on AT&T so finding an AT&T 3G N1 isn't as simple as buying it from the Google Developer site, but I would probably snag one off feeBay.

I'd have to go with no...unless you can get it for 200-250. While it is a nice phone and holds well against these beasts nowadays I can't justify a purchase due to the lack of internal memory and the horrid "multi-touch" panel. I too am waiting for a true nexus successor (Nexus S? yea okay.) and hopefully I won't have to wait long but there are nice phones on AT&T running android so im sure the inspire would be a better pick...or hold out for a few more months for whatever monsters are announced following Google I/O

i still love my nexus one to death, and still cannot find anything on the market now that i consider better than the nexus one simply because of the whole package, color trackball, design and build quality and materials, etc. so i say you should go for the nexus one.

No. It's an awesome phone, but as others have said, it's not worth $400 a year after it's out.

Figured that, since T-mobiles 1700 3g radio frequency is eventually going to be changed to Att LTE and the T-mobile Nexus One completely wont work once that happens, that every day I keep it is another day that the value will go down. Thought I better get out now and lock in my profit before others figure this out and start to flood Craigslist with cheaper prices.
hate. Hate. HATE to give up my $30 EvenMorePlus and $10 web2go but I'm not going to stay aboard a sinking ship and there are other options still out there for my price range of $40/month or less for a smartphone. I simply REFUSE to pay $60 - 70 per month purely on principle
