HD2 wifi in standby behaviour changed? - HD2 General

I have searched the forums and there are several threads about wifi in standby mode, some folks complaining their phone disconnects from wifi in standby mode and others who complain it doesn't... my problem is connected but distinct in that the way my phone handles wifi in standby has changed hence the reason I've started a new thread...
I have an HD2 and a few days ago had to perform a hard reset (my fault, I was fiddling about with the registry after having installed CHT 1.8.5).
I now have the phone running OK again but am experiencing a change in behaviour with Wifi disconnecting on standby as follows:
Before the reset, I would switch the phone on in the morning, it would connect to wifi and whilst at home would stay connected continiously to wifi (gprs/Edge/H would remain off) even when the phone went into standby.
Since the hard reset, when I switch phone on, it connects at first to wifi but after that, when phone goes into standby, wifi disconnects & gprs kicks in when phone retrieves e-mails etc. When I touch the screen to bring phone out of standby, the wifi reconnects but gprs remains on too (wouldn't be so bad if at least the gprs then turned off!). I then have to turn off gprs in Comm manager.
As I work from home, I prefer to use wifi as gprs drains the battery much quicker too (particulary if both wif & gprs remain connected I suppose). I have the latest version ROM that my provider (Virgin) supports so havent added any updates from the HTC site. Therefore the hard reset should not have made any difference to how wifi is handled on standby I presume
I have asked the Technical support at Virgin & all they could suggest was changing the 'power save mode' for wifi to 'best performance'. This made no difference either so they suggested I raise this with HTC which i have and await their reply (I'm not that confident they'll have the answer though)
Can anyone think why this behaviour has changed & how to revert back to having wifi stay connected in standby?
Thanks Folks

i suspect you had tweaked the wifi in standby setting in your previous set up, before the hard reset but maybe you don't remember.
so you were used to wifi remaining on, even in standby. but after the hard reset, the device has returned to the default behavior (i.e. wifi goes off in stand by).
you can use BSBTweaks to enable the option that keeps wifi on in standby but i have noticed that the setting does not stay after a simple soft reset.
so just download and install this! it works perfectly and remembers the setting between soft resets:

Thanks for the info, but no, I hadn't tweaked the wifi in standby setting as I wouldn't even know how too And didn't have BSB tweaks installed either before or now... That's what's got me confused!

check out this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=5353195 this app works great

You have had to had something changed before the hard reset that would allow WiFi on standby, because it is not allowed by standard.

Thanks, unless HTC come up with something, I will give this a go. I presume if you do want to turn wifi off, you still can in Comm manager?

I know it seems weird, but no, I'm sure I hadn't as I wouldn't have known how too - still don't as if I did I'd change it back! I'm 100% sure that wifi has always remained on in standby previously and there do seem to be others whose phones perform like this too (when they don't want them too!). All very odd
If this is standard Winmo default, it seems rather annoying as when the phone is is in standby, it activates gprs when checking for e-mails & thereafter gprs remains on, so when you wake phone from standby you have both wif & gprs running.....

the app/thread posted by harddisk_wp is the same one i've already referred you to. just install it and you're done!
comm manager will let you toggle wifi on/off as usual. the app above is actually NOT an app...it just runs on every boot up and changes the registry key that determines the behavior of wifi in standby. if wifi is off, it will remain off in standby. if you turned on wifi in comm manager, it will remain on in standby if the mentioned app is installed.
simple as that! no worries, hardly takes up any space on your device, and its a one-shot process on each boot up (it starts, does its job, and then quits) so it doesn't take up any run-time resources whatsoever. capish?

keep wifi connection alive on standby

there is a significant problem i just found out (i have been using symbian before).
wifi connection will not stay connected when the phone turns off in standby mode?
i really need to keep the connection alive.
i could uncheck 'turn off in xx minutes', but then the display will stay dimmed
which is not a good solution for me. power/saving bar is on full left, also disconnect wifi in xx minutes is disabled.
so, how do i do that even when the lights are off? dont tell me there is no way for that.
You need to install Advanced Configuration Tool.
http://julien.schapman.free.fr/touchxperience/advanced-configuration-tool.php
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=317070
There's an option you can tick to get the wifi to stay alive whilst it's on standby.
thank you for mentioning this program. it is quite useful
i have tried the advanced config tool to keep wifi connection, but it seems not working.
as soon the light turns off, wifi gets disconnected. and it gets reconnected immediately when it's back on
i have changed both:
'turn off wifi if no activity: no'
'wifi auto-off timeout to 9000000'
is there another setting i am missing or am i doing something wrong?

I can't find the option to keep the wi-fi on during standby. I have the config prog installed, and have read the documentation, but can't find the option to keep the wi-fi on during standby!
Edit, sorry my mistake.
Yes I'm having the same problem also it reconnects fine.
But you are right it should keep alive even in standbye.
Hi,
I used HD Tweak to change this setting. Works perfectly, now WiFi stays connected when the Phone is in StandBy

Thanks . I just forgot this was the way to go ...
But keep in mind that this option will SUCK all your battery very soon.....
Why dont you just turn the backlight off instead of standby when you want wifi to stay on. This way you dont need to mess with wifi setting.

I am using AE Button which has an option to turn backlight off.
btw: I am using version 2.6.3 which I think have a bug ie if you the use the option inside AEB to turn on wifi, the wifi stays on even if you press the top power-off button. This "bugged" version fits your requirement nicely.

And what about Heat up problem?? Keeping Wifi on will turn your HD into an oven - unless you keep it ventilated all the time

Same thing for me
the problem is wifi scanning.
on my old Nokia N95 (Symbian OS) i could turn off wifi scanning BUT keep the wifi connected to the router. that resulted being connected to something without constantly scanning for new routers or access points.
i dont know why but in all WM devices we do not have a possibility to turn off wifi scanning at all while keeping the wifi sesstion running.

Connection Dropping :(

Hi there
First time poster, shame it has to be a cry for help!!
I've got the touch HD, and I love it, however over the last week or so its started losing its HDSPA and 3G connection and dropping to phone only. At first I thought this maybe network related (T-Mobile), however it seems to do it in all locations.
I'ver noticed when it does it, the data connection slider in the settings tab, is switched to off, and as soon as I flick it back on, it picks up the signal fine (only to lose it again after a random amount of time). I've downloaded Tweak HD and set the internet to always on, however that doesn't make a difference.
I've not installed any custom roms, its the factory build, really hope someone can help
Thank you
Do you see the connection drop while the screen is on or is it after you have put the phone in standby (screen off)?
It seems to be random, I can be halfway through browsing the web and it'll drop or just coming out of standy.
The most common time seems to be when I do a send/receive on the email tab, it shows the 'H' icon then as soon as it starts syncronising, it drops out to radio then I have te re-send to get it to connect again.
I seem to recall the same thing happening to me back when I was using the stock rom. For the first week everything was fine, then the connection would drop when I turned the screen off or even when the phone was on. If you've tried setting the connection to "always on" and that does not fix the problem, then I would next try and download Schaps Advanced Config and enable/disable the different power management settings. I've suggested this to a few others for disconnect problems in standby and it seemed to work.

Hang-up in standy mode

Hi all,
Dont know if this is a known error in the original ROM but my telephone crashes when it is in standby mode.
It looks like the problem is in the power manager.
SPECS:
Diamond 2
OEM UK ROM
Test Steps taken:
- in power manager auto standby mode OFF
: No problem phone stays alive
- auto standby mode OFF, manually brought into standby
: Problem after 5 - 10 minutes, phone does not come out of standby mode, reset needed
- auto standby mode ON
: same as above
- auto standby on, and manually brought uinto standby
: same..
this doesn't sound like a HW problem to me, but is there a known sollution ?
Thanks in advance..
Grtz.
i had the same problem before -- but with o2 stealth. and i was able to fix it by disabling the password lock in settings. i'm not sure if this will also work on diamond2. no harm in trying.
The sounds a little bit like the Standby of Death issue except I only used to get it every couple of days because I would spend a portion of my week in a strong 3G area the SOD coincided with me being in a weak 3G area. Try this
I had the Standby of Death SOD this is when the phone fails to come out of standby with a power button press. This issue only affects some people on some networks. I'm not sure if its a network problem or a software problem but as only a minority of people have it, I suspect its mainly a network problem there is a software solution.
The solution is to change the phone settings band option from auto 3G/2G to either 3G Only (WCDMA + UTMS 2100 in Europe) or 2G Only (GSM + AUTO) depending on your requirements.

Hi
Disable the phone radio so it isn't connected to the nework, then try again, does it still fail to come out of standby? With a stock ROM which you say you have anyway do a hard-reset to wipe any programs or settings you may have made and try again, does it still fail to come out of standby?
If yes it is a hardware problem, most likely faulty RAM that can't keep the contents stored in standby mode when it's being refreshed at a lower rate and voltage.

Phil

Good thinking Phillip, If he can reproduce the problem consistantly within 5 - 10 minutes then the phone radio might not be at fault in this instance, the quickest way to tell would be to disable the phone radio as you quite rightly suggest.
In my limited expierience with the SOD I could not reproduce it at will within 5-10 minutes, it just happened randomly 2-3 times over the course of a week and coincedently when I was in a weak 3G area (not such a coincedence! after all)
Admittedly I had the SOD only once again on my Tytn II in the 1.5 years after I changed the phone band settings from auto to GSM only, so it can happen for other reasons but it should be very rare indeed.
If you read this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=540943&highlight=standby&page=2 the resolution was to get a new SIM.
Obviously everything I've written above only solves the problem when the crash is because of the sim and/or settings which impact the sim. To rule out a software cause its best to start with a hard reset.

How can I disable 'Turn on Wi-Fi automatically'?

The turn on wifi automatically feature in the Topaz 6.5 HTC comm manager is a nice thought for saving battery life but it drives me nuts. Most programs, like Opera, will trigger the wifi to kick on when needed. But other programs, like Slingplayer Mobile doesn't kick the wifi on automatically. So, every time I run it I have to manually toggle the wifi to get it going again. Basically, as soon as it's in standby, the wifi goes off and STAYS off until needed. I want it to always come back on after waking device up. I do NOT want a hack for keeping it on in standby.
My Touch HD's comm manager says 'Connect to a Wi-Fi network'. Once I turn it on, it stays on no matter what. As soon as the phone is taken out of standby, wifi instantly reconnects. This is what I want my Topaz to do. But as soon as I wake it from standby, wifi is off until a program needs it. Good idea, not working well enough for me though.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
i had exactly the same problem... :-((
Try the TD2 Tools.

wifi not disconnecting in standby

Hi everyone
I have a strange problem since a couple of days. If turn my HD2 off (standby) the wifi connection remains alive. This naturally is a massive battery drain and the only thing I can do, is to manually turn it of whenever I don't need it. Does anyone have a solution for this problem.
After this problem appeared I thought I might have accidentally turned on the WiFi Standby tweak in BsB Tweaks. It appears turnoff in BsB Tweaks. So I thought I might try turning it on an then off again to clean up the registry, but I don't seem to be able to turn it on so it sticks. I'm thinking maybe BsB Tweaks isn't actually showing whether it's turned on or not. Does anyone know the reg-key concerned, so I can check manually whether it's turned on.
Thanks for your help
Greetings

I have exactly the same problem. Have you found a solution?
I had this problem today where it constantly kept trying to connect and my battery went from 73% to 4% within a few hours, even though i selected cancel.
do you have bsbtweaks installed? there is a tweak in there that lets wifi stay on when on standby, perhaps that is active?
this is not issue this is normal , as they make the end key closes the screen they should have stretched the wifi turn off time after standby so wait from 2-3 minuites after going to stand by and you will find it closed automatically

it was doing exactly how you say before, but it now never disconnects. I keep forgetting to turn it off and it's such a battery killer. "keep wifi connection in standby" is not active under BSB Tweaks by the way.

Check this registry value...
HKLM\Comm\BCMSDDHD1\Parms:HTCKeepWifiOnWhenUnattended
It should be 0 to turn off wifi when in standby.
Hope this helps
Edit:
Ignore the space in "HTCKeepWifiOnWhenUnattended" above. It's this forum - it's always doing that
I've found this:
HKLM\Comm\BCMSDDHD1\Parms:SuspendOffDelayInterval
I've set it from default 30000(30 seconds) to 5000 (5 seconds) and WiFi does restart when I power-on after 5 seconds.

This thread is interesting. I, on the other hand, would like to keep wifi ON while in standby (with screen off). For certain programs such as Pandora, I would like it playing in the background but have my screen off.
I am having the opposite issue. I can't seem to make it do that given the tips I found already on this thread.
I tried changing the following from 0 to 1 but noticed that when I poweroff phone, it goes back to being 0. Can anyone help me out? Sorry I don't mean to take over your thread. Maybe I should start a new similar thread with an opposite meaning..
