Any android App using Froyo push? - Desire Themes and Apps

Hello,
Since Google IO, i was very excited to see the push feature, cloud to device (C2D) but it has been a few weeks and I cannot find any app using these features.
All I could find is the Chrome extension ( exist also on mozilla) to send links on the phone by push...
But were are the other applications?
I imagined all the geeks creating imaginative apps (it's also the world cup and push is esential!) after that but seem to be impossible to find.
Please share what you found.
Thanks
Profete162

froyo aint officially released so I dont think there will be many apps using this feature until Froyo is out properly.

May want to review a vid or two from I/O. It's a feature they're going to implement, probably later in the summer. So far it only works for maps & links.

Ok, thanks for the info.
If I hadn't seen the chrome extention, i would never have asked the question, but as this extention is working pretty well, I imagined other applications that would use this feature.
Especially for the world cup
But OK, i will just wait a few weeks/month.

Sorry, it's me again.
As te N1 has Froyo since a few weeks and the Desire Begin to have it.
A lot of other devices too ( Hero, Dream, Magic, Droid,..)
I do not feel yet the power of Froyo applications. Am I too excited and should I wait a little bit more?
Does the Dev's have all the tools in their hands to make push applications ( for sport, that seem a must-have)
Sorry if my question is too early for asking that. I cannot feel the power of Froyo 2 month after the Google I/0.

Only the N1 has froyo officially. If you look at the share of the android OS that is on 2.2 it's incredibly small still even with the rooted roms. clicky. It needs to roll out to a sizeable percentage before it will be supported by the majority of developers. 1.8% if all android users isn't a big enough market to go after with applications.
Just need patience young padawan

Why bother waiting for 2.1 ?

honestly with the work the dev's have been doin with the 2.1 ports i could care less about the official 2.1 now . do ya really have to wait another month or so just because it says "sprint" on it or would ya rather use all the amazing new features it has now.

I can't wait for the release when like 95 new threads will be made about it lol
Because the Sprint release will have all features working. After that, our dev's can make custom ROM's based on a fully working release, which of course, will be far superior...........
i can't wait till the stupid thing comes out a million people whine beacause its not the holy grail they thought it would be . then we can all move on with our lives
every single feature i need want and use works flawlessly for me i couldnt ask for more. i could care less about the bloatware from sprint other people make better apps on the market anyway

Why?? My wife's phone is stock and everything works perfectly.....Why should it be any different for 2.1?? They are waiting to release to be sure it works.
I'm a nascar fan and it doesn't work on Damage 1.0, but I don't really care at this point as my wifes is stock and we listen to that one....Everything I need works on Damage and I'm very happy with it, it is my daily.

My father's phone is bone-stock and mine is rooted, running the Beta DC 1.1... and I'd say my phone has less issues than he has.
I'm guessing you didn't get a Hero at launch... there were a few problems that needed addressing.
My thought on the sprint released one:
Hopefully it will run a little smoother than ours does now because things are done "Appropriately" and not hacked together(Kerenel and driver versions are appropriate). I could only imagine this would make things a little better. Then we can have our way with a new one.
My current impression of the 2.1 Roms I have loaded:
They are really good considering all that has to be done to make one work. It seems they are a little slow when you start switching between apps and somethings just act a little funny. Like my browser randomly closes back to the home screen after I click on a link. If I run one game and then move to another its laggy. But all of this stuff is still really great and the devs have done a great job with what is at their disposal. I have run a 2.1 daliy for about the last 2 weeks, and the benefits far out weigh going back to a 1.5. I wish I could get the latest PRL with out going through all the work.
DISCALIMER:
IMHO
Im sure an official 2.1 release will result in a 2.1 kitchen as well... thats something to look forward to!
The official Sprint/HTC 2.1 will just give the community more stuff to build upon and incorporate into current ROM's. Whether starting from source or hacking on a prebuilt or leaked ROM (or some combination of these), something tells me most of the folks on this list won't view ANY Android release as a finished product.
Honestly, if Sprint/HTC they were smart the fixes and extensions to Android found on this forum and elsewhere (example, the kernel optimizations, Cyanogen's updater, the "kitchen" model, themes and skins, etc) would be going the other way and finding themselves in the official releases. But I'm not holding my breath

I don't think anyone thinks it is the holy grail. People just want things like live wallpapers, accurate location, working bluetooth, working MMS/SMS/etc., working google voice, stability, and other admittedly minor issues that plague the 2.1 roms. It's not going to change anyone's life, but suddenly my latitude might stop showing I'm 30 miles away and I can finally have that cool spinning galaxy wallpaper.

We're glad that everything that you want works for you. But you must have realized at some point by now that we're not all you, and some of us care about those things that don't work.
Why you would whine and argue that we should just settle for a rom that has less things working and not look forward to a rom that has more things working is beyond me.

I am thinking that, the items that are still not working only affect a small percentage of us out there, and if a feature is broken, but you never use it, then why worry?
He has a point, not everyone is insanely OCD about all features working. Being OCD about isn't a bad thing either. XDA and Android itself is all about choices. He has made his, you have made yours. I don't even understand why there is so much discussion about this.

If sprint were smart they would sell this device unlocked with the ability to download customizations from their store (roms, taskbars, lockscreens, icons, customized rosies, bootscreens etc) for a few bucks a pop, and let everyone customize the phone to their liking. Would prob be tens of thousands of additional income for them from the people who are too lazy to root and do it themselves.

So you'd have to be "insanely OCD" to want all the features on your phone working? Why did they bother to creating the features in the first place?
I would also point out that I haven't seen anyone who is "insanely OCD" about the official 2.1 rom coming out either.

It would seem to me that you are very particular about having all features work on your phone. I can understand this, I even stated that in my post. Perhaps OCD was a bad way to put it. Rather lets call it Nitpicky. In either case, I think you've missed the point I was getting at in my post. That point was that we all have the freedom to choose how to use our phones. 2.1 will come from sprint in due course. Sprint has made no promises on a date for it yet people continue to act overly anxious regardless.
Out of curiosity, what feature(s) is missing from the current 2.1 builds that has you waiting for the official sprint release?
1. No more "beta" ROMs (i.e. all ROMs with some minor issues, each with different ones, less messing with wiping).
2. Less ROMs and just a few really good ones (like with 1.5) which would lead to many more custom themes, and not themes that will be outdated with the new beta releases.
P.S. After the month of 2.1, when people are on their "x 2.1 official ROM" and they've done their themes, the boards will slow down like hell and people will just work on themes. In fact if Sprint has their way, by the time you get "official" 2.1 with the theme you want, you will be moving on to the 4g phones. I really don't see these boards having so much action after all the final ROM releases are out and the major themes are out for them.
The only reason I want the official 2.1 to come is because currently the "hacked together (if you will)" 2.1 ROM's get horrible signal on my phone. If I run 1.5 in the same area, I usually always have about 10-15 less dBa (less is better) than a 2.1 ROM. So hopefully the Sprint 2.1-based ROM's will have this corrected... otherwise I might stick to 1.5 forever
Well for one everything would be working 100%. With no setbacks like the devs make taking out keyboards, sounds, etc etc just to make the rom faster and more stable
You would have all your sprint apps, all google apps along with htcs more widgets and Market will show (as u see in ads) the 30,000+ apps
But i dont think its worth the unroot and root again tho. ill just wait two days or maybe 15hours before a dev make they own version of the rom.

Magic with froyo 2.2?

There were some rumors that some of the Android devices of HTC will not receive the newest update to Android Froyo 2.2. While this is partially true, we’re happy to say that HTC Magic is not included in that “black list”.
As announced by the second largest French mobile operator SFR, the device will receive the desired Froyo soon. Some believe that this will take place even in this month. T-Mobile has also plans to update myTouch 3 G which is basically the same device to Froyo by the end of this year.
Let’s say that the device looks to handle the novelties quite well, considering the fact “of not being that new”. Good job!

so correct me if im wrong... but if the htc magic gets official android 2.2 does that mean the amazing developers here are going to have a field day with it and make it even better and more customizable than the actual creators of it?
I sure hope so would love to have a nice custom rom with 2.2 that works and with tons of bonus stuff pre installed.
Maybe you haven't noticed, but the amazing developers here are having a field day since the froyo source was dropped in to AOSP a few days ago. CM6 should be just around the corner.
i know they are already playing with it, but with a copy from the actually phone i imagine it would be easier to mod and play with since they dont have to port and do all kinds of ridicules things to get it to work on another phone.

Remember that the 32B Magic is the ION/ADP2, everything you need to get a fully working ROM is supplied in the AOSP. What you're suggesting is probably more relevant to devices like the Hero. At any rate, we'll probably see CM6 or some other froyo ROM before a shipped one.
ok well you seem to know more than i do so i hope a 2.2 near perfect rom comes out soom. im so excited lol
Yeah me too, Cyan's feed is the only reason I'm checking twitter atm, really looking forward to speed increases

could there still be a windows Mobile 7?

Does anyone here think it possible, or perhaps even worth developing a windows MOBILE 7 rom for the HD2? Perhaps based on windows embedded mobile? Even better, does anyone care?
After seeing the Android rom working for about 5 minutes I'm more excited for that than Win7.
I wouldn't doubt if there are people making a Win7 ROM for the HD2.
Am I the only one who thinks that Winmo 6.5 Energy + Modded manila > Android ? Energy Winmo just looks and feels better... Androis is overhyped, but I may need to play with it a bit more.
I don't care for windows phone 7, but about the time wm 6.1 was released, i got excited for wm7. i thought it would be awesome. instead we get wp7. crap.

I was with Android from 1.0 to 1.5 to 1.6 to 2.1 on my g1 and having switched to WinMo I do not want to go back. I am not intetested in Android or Phone 7 for my Hd2.
I have to agree with freeincolorado and silencer, android just doesn't cut the mustard. I finally loaded it on my TP2 and have been playing with it all weekend, and while there's a few things about it that I wish winmo had, I was still very relieved when popped my sim back in my HD2 this afternoon.
As for the original topic of this post, I feel extrememly confident that someone will try to to get wp7 working on the HD2, if only for the accomplishment. Even if it's never tried with any other existing phone, the HD2's hardware should certainly be capable, if the drivers etc can be made to work with it.
I like both OS of android and win mo. Both are open source and highly customizable. I just preordered the T-Mobile Vibrant but will be keeping my HD2 for work and will end up flashing some cool new roms on it.
I've been sticking with android because unlike Win Mo 6.5x, it's not a dying platform. It's completely on the rise with the upcoming Froyo and Gingerbread updates. Google has also promised even more updates in the future. I see LOADS of potential. The Android market is constantly growing along with XDA development e.g., CyanogenMod, etc..
But don't get me wrong I love Win Mo. It's by far and truely open source vs. android. I was surprised that I can already do things on my stock HD2 that a stock and unrooted android device can't (saving apps to sd, overclock the cpu, playing Flash etc). But with these forthcoming android OS updates, these features will finally be included.

Well we got great devs here on our side so were gonna be just fine. I see a modified Win 6.75 coming out once WP7 is out. Taking key features and benefits from WP7 and merging them into Win6.5. Hell I'm running Kumars Classic rom and haven't had to reboot in like 10 days now. Then I see dual boot with an android port that works good but has a few bugs. Then I dream of possibly WINXP or a good UBUNTU running as a 3rd or dare it 4th os. With all the tablets coming out we may have many more OS options and choices floating around.
winmo 6.5 crushes android 1.6 imo...I Had a g1 running 1.6 and absolutely loved it, great device and great os..i use winmo 6.1 on a motorola mc55 for work so i thought i would hate the hd2 but compared to the motorola cliq which was my only android "upgrade" option from tmous at the time, the hd2 ran circles so I went with it and got the xt for the wife to compare...no contest hd2 ftw...she's still waiting for 2.1, moto delayed it again she's still at 1.5! haha . I do miss some android features but i just look at that huge screen and forget all about it...
i realize that many people want windows phone 7 for hd2, but this thread is really about windows mobile 7. I'm thinking photon. do you think thats possible?

First off - Windows Mobile is NOT open source.
As for WM7 - I'm sure it will be ported to the HD2. The real question is will the GPS, bluetooth, and camera work with it properly - which is my complaint about Android. If those 3 things don't also work along with everything else (I *suppose* I could live without the FM radio) - then it's pointless as far as I'm concerned.

Yeah i'm hoping he meant the platform is more open, not open source. Quite a difference there.
As far as platforms being open, Android and WinMo are probably on even playing fields. But WinMo probably has more seasoned developers/hackers that know a lot of the tricks with the OS
And actually WinMo may be more open as far as user rights, because google does have the ability to withdraw an app from their store and uninstall it from users handhelds remotely. I don't think MS has that ability from their app store, and they most certainly don't have that ability to uninstall apps loaded from downloaded cabs
Google has already done this once http://www.dailytech.com/Google+Use...+Removal+Tech+for+First+Time/article18843.htm Though it does seem legitimate to protect the users. whats to stop some app, say like DeCSS for decrypting DVDs being deemed illegal, and then google being forced to remove something due to a lawsuit, not because it is in any way is dangerous to a user.
It really rubs me the wrong way for a 3rd party to be able to uninstall and maybe even possibly remotely install code onto a piece of hardware that i OWN!

what right do you or big steve or the chocolate factory have to decide what someone else can or can't search for? who defines "trashy porn"?
first step towards a fascist totalitarian state is controlling the populace's reading/viewing material.
first they came for the pornographers, and no one spoke up, because we werent pornographers
then they came for the app devs they didn't like, still no one spoke, because we arent devs
next they took control of the adding/removing of apps on devices they didn't own, and still we were silent,
when they come for us, who is left to speak out?

However i'm not sure if Windows Phone 7 will come to the HD2, i'd love it to and i've heard its possible.
But there is one thing which makes me think it would never be done in the same way Android has, and that is Android is open source where as WP7 is closed source and therefore wouldn't it be illegal to port it?

truly wise words
Ive been modding my as off with the HD2 and the Galaxy S, cant wait to se what these creative developers can do with the Desire HD.. man its going to be beautiful!
Illegal
I am constantly putting custom roms on my HD2 with Windows Mobile versions that have not been released yet. I don't think that is less illegal than releasing Windows Phone 7.
An official release would be nice of course. Especially because I do not know if we can update WP7 if it ever gets ported to the HD2.
I have heard from several sources that in the development the HD2 has been used a test device and therefore the drivers and so should be available at HTC. The HD7 virtually is equal to the HD2 so a release should be very easy for HTC.
I still have hopes they will release it. Eventually the phone will be worn out and need to be replaced. If HTC has provided me with an update to WP7, my idea of HTC will be so positive that my next phone most probably would be an HTC as well.
If not, well then I hope that WM6.5 gets more and more stable and with cookie hometab 2.0 or SPB windows mobile shell 5.0 we still have a nice interface. I know that the new range of WP7 phones do not offer enough hardware advantages to justify an upgrade while I bought my HD2 for around 550 euro not even a year ago.
A reason why I still count on an official update is that HTC has not been doing much to update the sense experience so far, while on android it keeps getting better and more flexible.
A WP7 release would make up for that, if not, I feel a little bit deserted by HTC.
Also for Microsoft an update would be usefull, they would have an instant increase of marketshare. This is good for app devellopment, mouth to mouth advertising and eventually would help MS to anker their OS into the market.
This is a video from one of the main people who brought us android on our hd2s so i beleive it to be real.

Well.. If HTC were to release an OFFICIAL update of WinMo7 then people won't buy the HD7..Of course you can also say that if HTC were to update their (not too) old phones they will bring more customers..
I, personally, don't like WinMo7..
It looks too 'simple' for me.. and I don't really like the design.. but we'll have to wait for some reviews and more pics..
lets hope sombdy at HTC just happens to drop da drivers for WP7 on da hands of a couple dev... an goes on wit der life... nody knowin who left em behind
Well if it is illegal just be one of the first to download it ;o
1 - Legal or illegal, I know I don't give a rat's ass about legality.
2 - BE OPTIMISTIC, COTULLA IS JESUS OF CODING.
3 - I sure hope it will come to the HD2
Well I hope someone does port WP7 to the HD2, especially as I've looked at the specs for the HTC HD7 and apart from having build in 8/16gb expanded memory the specs are identical!!! I thought the whole point of WP7 and HTC denying any statement that they would port it back to the HD2 was that the CPU would be a dual core snapdragon (if I understood things right) but seams this is not the case and there is no physical hardware problem with the HD2 running it.
I would guess the thing that will stop it at the moment is getting a Kernel sorted that would boot WP7 just like is needed for Android ROMS to run or a Radio update.
Personally speaking I can't wait to give it a go, the only reason I still run WM6.5 is so I can properly access my work exchange email and hotmail at the same time (+3 other email accounts) and when i'm in the car WM6.5 is perfect for playing music and using sat nav without having to look at the screen (found android audio multi-tasking lacking) but love the android for the customisable scenes, apps, widgets and more importantly, app content (love robo wars and angry birds).
It would be actually better on the HD2 than the HD7; I really really miss having a phone button on WP7 (you have to go back to the home screen, tap the phone icon, then tap the keypad icon...) but guess what? The HD2 already has one! The future is now!
Wp7 seems to have forgotten that some people actually like their phone to also at the same time be a phone (of all things). To be easy to use as a phone. To let you quickly phone people. To not spend five minutes working out how to phone people whilst fumbling on the touch screen on a rainy day. To let you answer phone calls with a (real) button press that your fingers can quickly find whilst pulling it out of your pocket, and (what black magic is this I see) the HD2 even lets you press a button to hang up a call! It's pure genius.
I really like the way an HD2 is built - much more than other phones I've seen - so I'd love to see WP7 on it.
And just to get it off my chest one more time.... Why of why oh why (oh why....) Microsoft did you get rid of the phone button?
well here is an interesting read for you guys (my email responce from htc)...

Windows Mobile 7 is a giant step backwards in 3 key areas
1. No native tethering support. What this means is ooops no connection to the PC like you have now with WinMo 6.5.X
2. No 3rd party app multitasking. What this means is when you get a call and the OS moves away from the app, it gets closed. if the app developer was not smart enough to save the app state, you're screwed.
3. Copy and paste. (This is supposed to be resolved). What this means is you cannot copy urls or text out of something and paste it into another place

1. This won't last long, it will come unless carriers block it.
2. Depends on the 3rd party app. Microsoft has already relented for pandora (apparently). What makes you think the app devs aren't smart enough to develop their apps properly knowing the issue of save state?
3. I've heard this was already fixed (or will be in the first update).
1. MS has stated that they will leave tethering up to the carriers hence it's missing.
2. What makes you think developers are smart enough? I can point to the crapload of buggy software already out for [insert platform here] that does not work right.
3. Should have been in there from the start, there really is no excuse for this most simplistic feature of windows to be missing.

Redevelopment of apps now that gingerbread is on the horizon

Hey,
I am NOT a dev, but I would like to know what kind of work work is going to be required now that gingerbread is on the forefront?
For example, VPlayer, doesn't work... it FC... How much work is it going to take to get the program back up and running???
Im just asking because, as much as I hate to admit it, fragmentation (as everyone calls it) is going to start causing issues. I get that google wants to offer the best and the latest and greatest, but if everytime a new API get sent out, and devs' have to rewrite their work, how much time is it going to take to get the proggy back up and running??
Thanks!
Theo

You should've stop right there.
You realize that at this point only 1(!) phone is running official 2.3 Gingerbread and it's Samsung Nexus S. It's a drop in a bucket comparing to all of the phones that are running official 2.x firmware.
Furthermore, if an app is properly developed against 1.x or 2.x SDK then it will work with gingerbreadas as all APIs are future-compliant. The only problem would be is if an app is developed using 2.3 APIs and you would try to use it on earlier roms or if it used undocumented/unofficial APIs that were not supposed to be used and were discontinued in future releases.
We don't know what 's causing vPlayer not to work, could be many things (kernel, unfinished rom development, missing libs) or it could be things in vPlayer that were improperly implemented.
Send a log to developer and see if he/she can help you. Given that you're not running official (or at least stable!) release, you may not get far though.
But please, don't jump on that "fragmentation" train, it's not nearly as bad as people make it out to be.

First off, I didn't ask for you to be a ****, if I would have posted this in the dev forum that would have prompted you to respond as such.

Now that that is out of the way, can I ask you HOW you can honestly say that Android isn't fragmented. Seriously ask your self... I LOVE android, I really do, G1-cliq-MT3G-Nexus One-HD2(androided)-MT4G, but I can't even lie about that. There is 9 API levels!! 2.3, 2.2, 2.1, 2.0.1, 2.0, 1.6, 1.5, 1.1, 1.0.
NOW I DO UNDERSTAND THAT ALMOST 45% ARE ON 2.2 and 40% ARE ON 2.1.
Ok, so now most apps are going to be working on that 84% of phones running level 7+.
But this ALSO doesn't account for the manufacture API's that are implemented buy some of them, which I KNOW causes some problems. (skype on the Samsung Galaxy Series) just to name one very big one. Skype works on other devices with 2.1, but it doesn't on the Samsung 2.1? as a consumer, I'd ask wtf, even with their limited knowledge of android.
Fragmentation is defined as is the inability to "write once and run anywhere". Rovio complained about this. Albeit not directly, but they said that they were having issues with people on some phones, with some versions of software, and that it wasn't going to work across the board.
I hate to admit it but there are certain things that need to be done to insure that Android will not only be the "Mobile OS" but it will also be the demanded one (IMHO):
1. Cut the bull**** manufacture stuff out, make only ONE set of API's, with 0 proprietary API's. Make it stuff that you can get if you want through the Android Market (custom UI's and such).
2. Control the god-damn market, find spammers, find shady devs re-uploading their apps multiple times to get ad dollars.
3. Get everybody on board to updates, require that all devices with X specifications be updated Y months after a source is released. That will get again get everyone on the same API level, and will make all apps compatible (maybe slow).
4. For the love of all holy, USE THE BEST COMPONENTS YOU CAN FIND! AND MAKE IT A STANDARD At least for the primary functions of the phone. For example, the Nexus One (my fave so far) did NOT have a competent touch screen, 2 point, and a BAD 2 point at that, and that is considered to be the new dev phone. Well who the HELL would want to dev for a platform that can only recognize two points (barely) that doesn't always even get them right? I sure as hell wouldn't. Finally I get the MT4G, the FIRST thing i did was test the touch screen, and guess what... It still is sub-par. 4 points, where my friends Galaxy S can do 6 or something. Now you are going to ask me, who uses 6 points idiot? Some games, do, and to top **** off, if you can't recognize 2 points properly, close together, how can some of the basic multi-touch functions work? (google maps on the N1)
I'm sorry for the rant, but I'm realistic. A mobile platform can't win like this.
