Today I went to use the front facing camera and the phone froze, rebooted, and now uses the back cam no matter what setting I put it on. It seems like the front cam is nonexistent. I have done a factory reset and still nothing. I dont understand what happend to HTC's quality controll from Hero to EVO. The Hero I had had ZERO issues and now these phones are falling apart right out of the box. Way to go HTC!!!
I might try to flash the stock rom again but dont think this will help.
This Current phone hardware version is 0003
Flashed the Sprint RUU and still no front camera time to trade this POS in
That sucks. Are you going to try to get another EVO? Had you had any previous problems before this?

So you possibly flashed a ROM that broke the front facing camera functionality, see that it doesn't come back when you flash back to stock, and you're blaming HTC for this? Sorry, that just doesn't make sense.
Maybe they should give him first hand support for whatever rom he wants to flash? lol
My front facing camera has not worked from the time I got the phone. My phone is stock. Waiting on a replacement form Best Buy.

The phone was stock, NO root or anything, so YES it is HTC's problem! and aparently I'm not the only person with this issue. Thinking about returning it and waiting for the Samsung Galaxy S Pro
If you are changing ROMs and all that, it's not HTC fault. Whatever ROM you are using has a driver for the front camera that doesn't work. Or maybe doesn't even have the driver for the front camera.
I studied computer science and computer engineering, and I am not rootting my cell now (I'm not saying that you did it). But it amazes me how daring many fellow forum mates are. They are playing with fire. I fried many times a microvax using Ultrix of which I was the SU, and Mr. Miguel de Icaza, the creator of Gnome himself, have to go to my cubicule to rescue me several times.
I'm not rooting my cell until I understand perfectly how it works, where are the processes, what are the processes, etc. They must be the same as Linux ones, but I'm going to check first.

Hi,
The day when I got my HD2, the camera hasnt been that good.
Sometimes it takex excellent pictures, but many a times it doesnt.
I upgraded to the stock ROM 2.XX and now running the latest Elegancia ROM.
Sometimes the camera just tries to focus and then just takes what is possible.
But yesterday i compared mine with another HD2 (also with the stock ROM) and the other phone takes amazing pictures.
Could it be a Hardware problem?
One more thing that I have noticed.
usually i do not like to set the Image preview on. But many at times, I hear the click and as I decide that the image is taken, the picture appears to be stuck and later refreshes. Turning the Image Preview On resolves this problem.
Its like as if the camera has become faster and more responsive.
Any clues for the image quality? or the Auto Focus ?
I havent tried the registry tweaks etc,
I tried setting ISO to 100 ,
Flicker to Auto,
Image quality to Normal.
Elgancia rom has camera issues I had a problem where they came out really blurry or the flash and the camera would make everything white. If I was you I would flash it back to t-mobile stock rom and check if it makes a difference if not maybe its your phone.
You more than likely have original release HD2 hardware. What color is your reset button? If it's red then you do indeed have first revision hardware, and the camera not working properly is a known hardware fault, and most of the time T-Mobile will replace your device free of charge because it's a known problem.

You think thats what it is ? I got mine the first day it launch and works fine and then flash it to elegancia rom and came out crappy. I will look for some samples photos of stock and the custom. The reception issue I still have it as well my battery last around 8 hr annoying.

I dont know that, But I dont think either. My camera issue has been from day one. Elegantia ROM has made my phone faster and more elegant I would say.
But I assure you, I would check back the Stock ROM later and let you know
Meanshile, i would also ask steve about the same.
Or.
Maybe if someone else had this issue and got it fixed ?
Wonder if there is any fix that i can try.

I have been using Android since cupcake and it's going to end with my Nexus One. Reasons:
These are problems I've had with various roms, most stock roms, some MIUI:
- The Camera, no matter which ROMS I get when I try and take a picture it reboots the phone after freezing. I cannot use my 5MP camera at all because of this.
- After leaving the phone charging for awhile then going back to it when I push one spot on the screen it thinks I've pushed a completely different spot. I require a full reboot to fix this.
- My keyboard, stock keyboard, sometimes turns all white. You then cannot see what you're typing and there's just this big white bar.
- To fix the above I got Better Keyboard. It force closes often, and sometimes when I try to type with it what I'm typing doesn't get inserted into the selected input box.
- I got five hours of STANDBY (not using phone at all) battery life on Gingerbread. I had to downgrade back to froyo to get normal battery life back.
- After ten seconds or so if you don't use your screen it's supposed to DIM. Regardless of whether or not I'm using my phone it still dims after ten seconds.
So as far as Android goes come October when my three year Bell contract expires I'll be selecting an iPhone. I am done with Android problems of all kinds. That's not to say there's not a lot of things I like about Android but I can't just keep on going with it whilst experiencing these annoying problems, when I've never experienced any problems of any sort on my jailbroken iPad.
Did you ever try using your warranty? Really sounds like you had a dodgy handset.
Sounds like your phone is a lemon. I experience none of that....don't think anything you mentioned is a problem of android itself, you just got unlucky with your phone

Not related to Android in the slightest. You're having a HARDWARE problem.

Again, this sounds like either something wrong with your rom or a hardware issue. I have never seen this issue.
Yeah, you're an idiot. Sorry, but you're blaming problems that either you have created or hardware problems on Android, the operating system.
But go ahead and leave Android. It sounds like you're not really technology capable of much more than an iPhone (and really, this is probably going to be pushing your technological limits it seems), so that is probably what you should stick to.
I won't be as harsh as the others
The only problem you mentioned that is N1 related is the screen, rest are probably rom related. If your flahsing all those roms you already know they are not guaranteed to work on all phones.
If you want to try another phone, try the new Sensation or equivalent. Android is still much better than Apple. IMHO. That said, my son and his wife have been Apple users for 20 years or as long as I can remember. They have used nothing else. So, I think the iphone is a good phone, just not for everyone. As android is not for everyone. I once thought Blackberry was unbeatable, I was wrong bigtime. When I first started using them, they may have been. But, not any more.
You are probably like me and get an itch to try something different. I am currently running RCADSmix Sense rom with a number of issues. But, I like it so much, I will put up with the issues. Probably means my next phone will be the Sensation or it's future quadcore brother.
Enjoy whatever you get, I still remember when a six transistor am radio was an upgrade. These are great tech times--

Im just guessing here but your in Canada with bell? bell doesn't offer the nexus one. how are you on a contract? Ill also agree with everyone else your problems are not android related. Sounds like a hardware issue. Good luck with the iPhone my brother loves his. I like the design but that's it.
Just flashed cyanogen latest version. New problems:
1. Sometimes when turning on the phone the lock screen doesn't show up, just my background displays and nothing else. Reboot required by pulling battery out in order to fix.
2. Display menus don't show up sometimes.
3. Already experienced this one, but the keyboard is yet again going completely white.
Anyone want to point me towards an actual working rom without any problems or does such a thing exist

Because not all of these problems are with the hardware and you, or myself are incapable of diagnosing them without more extensive investigation to the handset.
Roms work fine. Your phone doesn't
Most people have no or little problems with these roms
Most if not all issues are improper flashing or incomplete wipes--like not wiping system and data and caches multiple times
Check md5s
Or, not properly partitioning sdcard
If still issues then the phone has too many bad blocks for the rom and kernal
Ken
After reading your first post again, I think it is your phone and not common issues. I have never had a bad camera unless specifically noted on the OP page of an alpha type rom.
I can tell you how I do my sdcard and prepare for a new rom if you like. If my procedure doesn't work you will never have any better luck flashing with that particular phone.
Sorry
Ken
I'm with Telus on my N1 and i've never ever seen any of the problems you mentioned. I've also flashed alot of different roms/kernels/apps/etc and nothing like you had mentioned.
I did however have an issue that resembles your camera issue. Mine was the GPS causing my phone to reboot every time i used it. I didn't really notice it much until i started using it for GPS nav and such. Tried flashing different roms, going back to stock and issue still came up. Called HTC and sent my phone back under warranty. They told me they replaced the board and i have not seen the problem ever since.
I strongly recommend giving HTC a call and see if you can send your phone in for repairs.
That's what iPhone is for. To protect incompetents like yourself from themselves.
You should be nowhere near a rooted phone.
I have the exact same camera issue. The reason is a date of my beloved Nexus and my washing mashine. So it might be a hardware problem for you as well. Sometimes with some roms the camera seems to work 1 out of 10 times.
Bluetooth, fm radio died as well but everthing else is just fine. Some roms seem to check/use camera, radio or bluetooth during a reboot. Then the rom won't start at all or it makes random problems.
This phone is a beast. 20 minutes in the washing mashine at 60°C couldn't really destroy it. Even between screen and digitizer there was water and I had to disamble the phone three times and dry the parts for one week in a rice bowl to get it to work again.

Got this also, annoying but I'm quite sure it goes along with flashes. Pretty sure it will be normal on stock rom.
Actually mate I think you should upgrade your radio...
I used to have this issue with the camera before, get the latest radio and ur camera issue will be solved.
and the battery as well i guess
as for the keyboard and all the other problems just go to rom manager and flash cm 7.1 rc1 from there, make sure you wipe cache, and dalvik cache
it should solve ur issues

Hi people
there has been a big issue going round where people have started getting clicking noises coming from their phone/camera. we all have our different reason for when it started but the important thing is getting to the bottom of it. i have installed different roms and updated the camera.apk which has given me about 3 different camera firmware versions. all of which the noises reacted different. some worst then others. i believe the reason for the noises is that our phones along the lines of installing different roms has given us the wrong firmware for our cameras. as far as i know from reading about the phones have been shipped with 2 different cameras. therefore it would make sense that having the firmware for the camera which your phone doesnt have would course the camera to not work properly.
so im asking everyone to take their camera.apk from their phone and upload it to this thread with the firmware written next to it so that eventually we will have every camera firmware there is for us all the download and install and if im right we will come across the right firmware for our phone and the noise will have stopped.
What are these noises, I've been with several SGS2's and never heard of any..
For the camera APK's you can always take them apart your self, would be much faster that waiting for anyone.
Actually you might be wrong with your assumptions, the only camera version that clicks when opening or changing to video mode is the OC camera, no matter what camera firmware you install.
mine makes a noise but it always works. normal for me. running kf3.

well if that was the case then why had my phone never made the noises? i had different stock roms, custom roms and then i installed miui and the camera noises started. sometimes it does it when the card is reading, when i use flashlight when the phone turns on and when i open camera. so its really not what you think. inless maybe its oc firmware what tells the camera to do it? either way for something to not do it then do it after changing a rom it is def down to firmware not hardware

Maybe you didn't pay attention before and your camera was acting like that before too. From my talks with romanian SII owners i got to the conclusion that all OC cameras do that, while the rest of the cameras don't. Don't you think it's a bit weird that every single OC camera does that and others with different camera version couldn't confirm clicking noises ? Can't be a coincidence.

but like i said. they are going on the basis of what the phone tells them on the firmware. whats to say its not the oc firmware what tells the camera to do the checks what make the noise? i know 100% it didnt make the noise before. and im not the only one. i bet u any money if someone can make a apk which will install se on my phone rather then oc my phone will stop making noise
Guess you are stuck with the clicking noise until Samsung releases an update that could fix it. Doubt you can change OC to any other version. Mine is OC and acts the same.
Isn't the clicking the shutter opening? If so that's hardware and can't be fixed with firmware, maybe that's the reason for two different camera models, new one with a quite shutter

Hi,
Since going to Sense gingerbread ROMs, my camera has been horrible in low light pictures. It seems like the flash is firing just a little bit too early. By the time the shutter opens, the flash has pretty much done its thing, and the picture comes out very dark. I have tried every single combination of Sense GB ROM and kernel that is currently available, and I get the same result with every single one. I have also tried all of the cameras available in the Market. I get the same poor results with every single one of them. The only way that I can get a decent low light picture is to flash back to a Froyo ROM, or over to an AOSP ROM. The pictures taken in any Froyo or AOSP ROM come out good and bright in all conditions. I think that there must be some sort of incompatibility with Gingerbread ROMs and the camera in my phone.
But of course just like every other thing with these phones, not everyone is having problems. But there are quite a few people that are. I've been trying to work out whether it is some sort of software issue, or hardware. We all know that there are four different hardware versions on the Evo. And from what I can determine, there are two different types of cameras in use. I started a little survey in one of the ROM threads in development. But I thought that I'd move it up here so that more people could see it and participate. I am hoping that if you know for sure that you are having the dark low light photos problem or if you know for sure that you're not having the problem that you could post information in this thread about the ROM you're running, your hardware version, the camera that you have in your phone, and whether you're having the problem or not. To determine the camera in use, do the following:
Using root explorer navigate to sys/ you will see android_camera and android_camera2. Android_camera is the rear camera. Go into that folder, hold over sensor until you see the options menu. Scroll down to View As Text and that opens the file with Camera brand and model number. Post that information to the thread, along with the other information requested above. I'll start:
ROM: Classic 0.0.4
Hardware: 0003
Camera: samsung S5K3HIGX 8M
I do have the issue
Thank you to anyone that responds to this.

Right. Not everyone on GB has the problem though. I am trying to find something that everyone with the problem has in common. It's not the camera itself. Maybe it's the camera and hardware combination. That's what I'm hoping to determine with this thread.

I plan on telling them about it working well on Froyo. I restored my nandroid from right after I rooted and took a few pictures. Then I went back to Classic and took the same pictures. The difference is huge. But yea, cannot mention AOSP at all.
Also, I'm not unrooting my phone. I installed the latest stock GB ROM. Hopefully they won't dig too deeply into that. I've had really good luck with this non-corporate Sprint store down the road. Hopefully my luck will continue today. Though I'm not exactly sure what I expect to get out of it. I mean I really don't think that the problem is fixable on the phone. But I'll feel better once I've exhausted all possible options.

Sounds like he was trying to avoid addressing your problem by making it look like a non problem. I'm guessing possibly in front of other people so it looked like you were just wining. If they can't replicate it, it must not be happening right?
That is exactly what went down in the store, exactly!

The Sprint store guy admitted that he could see the issue. He had an older Evo around with Froyo on it and he compared and sure enough, there was a big difference. He said that the only thing he could really do would be to order a replacement, but that the replacement might have the same problem or some other problem. So at least he was honest with me.

How about posting your hardware, camera, and ROM...
Sent from my PC36100 using xda premium
Multiple threads on this topic, but posting here since this is the most recent.
First, the basics:
Evo 4G rooted
still running standard Sprint Rom (basic tweaks, nothing serious)
Camera Zoom FX 3.2.2
Yesterday I realized that I'm having this issue as well... pictures are certainly coming out darker than before. This isn't the first time it's occurred, but up until now didn't realize it was reoccurring thing. It's further exaggerated when shooting from a lower light area towards a brighter area (example: from inside a car of something outside). No big shock there.
I installed Camera Zoom a few months ago in hopes of increasing the quality of pics (over the stock camera app). Overall, it was very successful. However, for the most part I take pics indoors or under a decent amount of overhead/ambient light. Thus far, no problems. But it seems that the increase in pic quality with Camera Zoom has also brought an increase in darkness to these pics in certain situations. Not so good.
Will try to find an answer.
I'll get right to it..my camera was just giving me a black screen and then force closing! It was very frustrating. It would occasionlly work for about an hour then just black screen..
So I started testing..I did fix permissions, changed Roms from ICS, to AOSP, to Sense and had the same problem.
Tried different wipes hoping to fix, but to no avail...just a black screen then force close.
So I figured it might be a hardware problem...I opened the back of the EVO(not so hard) to inspect the camera and found that it had come particilly unseated from the board..I pushed it back down, closed it up and the camera now works great!!
This was frustrating to me, and I did a lot of searching trying to find the problem but with no luck.
Hope this will help others with similar problems!
i have heard of another person having issues with an extended battery and camera not cooperating so it could be that..if u are using one.. and if not i have also heard of the camera coming unseated... now im not sure the process of getting at it but it was something as simple as removing some parts and pressing it back down a bit or something... dont quote me on the process but that seemed to be it

The camera not being seated was my problem. Once I pushed it back down the camera has worked just fine.
It was fairly easy to fix: remove 6 #5 torque screws then pry around the case to remove the back...took maybe 5 minutes to fix a month of headaches.
I just figured I'd share because sharing is caring right

Yea, typically happens due to drops [not saying you did] and general usage. The same thing happened to my mom's but I knew right away because of the discoloration, meaning some pins weren't connecting.

You can say it...I've dropped it a bunch of times
sent from my EVO running some version of ICS
As Sprint tech I bet I've fixed a truckload for the same reason. Some times the camera actually does go bad.. usually its just a bit out of the socket.

You don't know how long I have gone without my camera, it stopped working (Black Screen and FC) soon after I installed CyanogenMod and I have always blamed CM7, I have done the same that you have, reinstalled everything atleast 3 times and finally did a superwipe and somehow it worked for a few days but soon after started to FC again, weird and that is why I assumed it was not a hardware issue but after finding your post I figured I had nothing to lose, so I opened my EVO up and sure enough the camera snapped down, it moved just a little bit but after i closed her up and rebooted my camera is back and fully working.
So THANK A MILLION, Your the best, thanks for sharing, because honestly I was ready to toss it since I rely on my camera quite a bit to take pics of items I sell on Craigslist, the only reason I have not upgraded is because Sprint has not released any decent phones or any that I deem better that my EVO.
If sprint gets the Samsung Note I will jump "Fingers Crossed"

Glad I could help!
I feel your pain, I was frustrated as well and never found a definite answer for a fix. With 5 kids i take lots of pictures and my camera had been out of service for a couple months...:banghead:
I'm also waiting to see what new stuff comes out, but would really like LTE in Indy, but don't see that happening anytime soon..

omg thankyou
i must start out by saying i took the time to create an account just to make this post i have been looking for a camera fix that works i have tried
everything i could , different roms, updates , and several late nights. i just gave up on my evo camera was actually thinking of getting a new phone
less than 5min after all this time of not having my camera it works i forgot how good this camera was thank you so much
Thank you thank you thank you
Man, you just save my $1500 bucks!!!!!
Ive been having hell with the camera not working period! And I need it for work, so I was getting ready to go buy an SGS3 for the wife and a Note 2 for myself...
If i get one I gotta get the misses one....
So I found this post, and I am running th Evo 4g with Seidio ext batt. It stopped working after I dropped the phone. Granted I have dropped it several times, but it finally stopped...
Took the Seido Rugged Case off, and pulled the battery...
I didnt have to take the back of the phone apart,
the dang battery moved about 2 feet, reboot phone and VIOLA!
Thanks!
Htc evo 4g camera not working
I fought that battle forever until I deleted most of my text messages then the camera came back and every time it quits I delete old text messages and it comes back. I think if theres too much data stored the camera app won't work. I hope this helps other EVO 4G users
