Okay, there is some misinformation going on.
If you are running a stock EVO, 3G works fine (I just did the 25MB speed test at testmy.net and averaged 1.1Mbps - when ROOTED, I can't get the 6MB test to finish).
When running a rooted EVO in Denver, for some reason, 3G cuts out constantly and won't last more than 2 minutes... generally about 30 seconds and then it dies for a few minutes or until you make a phone call, reboot, put it in airplane mode, etc.
I have tried literally EVERY ROM including the "stock rooted" ROM and they ALL exhibit this behavior.
The only thing I can think of is that something is amiss when flashing the new radio without using the official HTC update package but I'm not feeling like re-rooting my phone all over again with the old radio just to find out.
How many people are experiencing this?
I rooted my EVO and began having issues... Probably about the 13th as stated in the thread... Got really annoyed and flashed the stock RUU (had to take the rom.zip from the Temp folder and rename it to PC36IMG.zip in order to flash though because RUU would not find the phone)... Problem instantly was resolved. Ran the OTA update to get the new radio, thinking it was a radio problem, nope. Still works perfectly fine.
I decided I wanted to try EVOlution V8 today so I re-rooted. Right off the bat, 3G issues. I rooted manually, then NAND, then recovery, then flashed the new radio, REBOOTED, went back into recovery and flashed the ROM...
Now I just ran the RUU and flashed back to stock and everything is working fine. So there is something about the procedure to root that is causing the problem and I don't know if its Denver-specific or what...
I can tell you I didn't have any problems until I unlocked NAND and flashed the permanent recovery. Toast's original root gave me no issues... but that may just be coincidence.
If I decide to stop being lazy, I may re-root and skip updating the radio and see what that does... But for now, I have to conclude it is a rooting issue, NOT a network issue.

Hi, about 5 days ago my wifi stopped working. I'd turned it off a few days earlier since I didn't need it. When I try to turn it back on now though, it takes a few seconds and then says error. I'm not sure what's wrong with it.
Since then I've reflashed my phone rom (leedroid), factoryreset it, and updated the radio. nothing so far has fixed it. Mobile data still works so I wouldn't think it was hardware, but a software error shouldn't have survived the wipe and the radio update.
Does anyone have any suggestions?

I had similar issue when flashing another kernel on my stock ROM. Maybe your kernel isn't compatible with the radio or the kernel modules haven't been applied correctly. Hardware error should be presumed after flashing original RUU.
The thing is that I hadn't played with my phone since last year. the wifi just randomly stopped working. It was still on 1.22ghz kernel 1.0.2. It got reset to stock kernel when I factory wiped it.
I've gotta go travelling again for work tomorrow so I'll try flashing the original ruu back next weekend. Would it just be a case of restoring the original nandroid backup I did before I first h-booted/rommed it?

As far as I know, factory wipe deletes just the user data. I might be wrong though, because this is my first android, so I'm still learning the basics on rooting, kernels, etc. But from your first post it seemed that you updated your radio in that period, so this might be the clue to what happened. I don't know if the nandroid backup would restore everything to stock, but I'm pretty sure that the original RUU would. Still, you should follow a procedure that would allow you to keep your root (I think if you have radio S-OFF, you'd be able to flash 1.32 RUU and just root it). Anyway, you can't return the phone for warranty services with a custom ROM, so you still need to flash a stock RUU.
Sorry, I should clarify: I did the radio update yesterday to see if it could fix it. It wasn't the cause.
So.... I was stuck at the M logo after trying to update to a newer version of MIUI. I successfully SBF'd back to stock froyo and my phone won't activate. When the activation call tells me to press "1", it simply goes silent.
Now I somehow bypassed the activation screen, I don't think that was a good idea because it forced me to connect via wifi. I just said "screw it anyway" and went ahain to reroot. Then I installed CM7 (since I current don't have the MIUI zip I was previously running on my phone). Now I am stuck at the CM7 logo. Not sure if I should SBF again or what I should do. I'm kinda freaked.
Also, I have never had a problem SBFing before. This seems more serious than before.
Update: Wiping data allowed me to boot up in CM7. Still cannot activate my phone. Whenever it prompts me to press "1", all I get is complete silence.
I'm currently at UT Dallas, so I don't think location is a problem is it? Actually it shouldn't be because I bricked my phone here before. Had to reactivate it and it worked great.
Man, this is the first time my phone won't activate.
Yes I know I am posting a lot, but since no one is here to help currently I'm trying things out on my own.
I tried restoring a nandroid I had of CM7 previously. Man I thought this was always a failsafe....
Just thinking of things I did since the last time I activated my phone. I updated something (radio version, I don't really know much about it), it was supposed to make my 3G faster or whatever. But I mean I've SBF'd, factory reset and everything, so that shouldn't be an issue?
Gosh dang, I just want my phone back the way it was 2 hours ago.
One of the reasons nandroid might not be working is that I might have a different version of clockwork on my phone. I remember before having a version where the test was blue, but I forgot the version number. Now the one I get with rom manager is green (like the one I had before I got the blue one).
Man I am sooo confused here. I am completely at a loss. I am out of ideas. I need help.
So I realized I did not have the second init version of clockwork. I just flashed that, and I'm waiting to see if I will get any errors. If I get this to work I am going to flash the version of MIUI I had and try to restore my more recent nandroid (since Ive gotten MIUI).
Yup problem solved. Not sure what was causing the problem, but at least its solved. I'm gonna be extra careful next time I flash something.
In the other thread about random reboots, everyone had T-mobile and some people said that it was the SIM, or the "4G" network that was causing the restarts. I'm with AT&T and not really sure what to believe since AT&T 4G is LTE and the N1 doesn't have an LTE radio.
It started about 5 or 6 weeks ago. Regardless of what the phone is doing, it will just randomly restart. However, this only happens in some parts of the city. I've had it happen zero times in my apartment, but at work, it'll restart more than a dozen times through out the day just sitting on my desk. Is that indicative of a radio problem? It's running stock 2.3.6. Cache wipes do nothing. Logcat says nothing. Different batteries haven't helped.
Anyone else having the same problems?
It sucks when that happens, fastest way out is to start from scratch.
It may be a good time to install ICS (backup everything first)
I'm thinking about just going ICS, but if this is a radio problem, which it looks like, I'm not sure if that will help. I found that if I turn off 3G and only work off EDGE, it remedies the restarts. Seems like it's the 3G radio.
Can anyone using an AT&T N1 confirm what radio they're using? If anything I can reflash it to an older one to see if that helps.
If this persists, I'll just pick up the GSM Galaxy Nexus next week, but I'd loe to get to the bottom of this.
What radio version is the phone currently running on?
Try upgrading your radio to the newest. Also, if you have a custom recovery, try wiping everything and starting from scratch...
Do This: http://www.darklome.com/2011/07/update-your-n1-radio/
Get yourself Amon-Ra Recovery (partitions sd card better than CWM)
then while in recovery, wipe **everything**, re-partition your SD Card (to get rid of any garbage on it (0 swap, 512 ext, rest on fat (also, upgrade ext to ext 3, not ext4) and install a new ROM. I would recommend something like Kang-o-rama.
so upgrade radio
install amon ra
wipe EVERYTHING
Repartition SD Card
Convert from Ext2 to Ext 3
Install Kang-o-Rama
reboot and everything will be brand new and clean.
If you still have issues after that then get a new phone.
If this helped hit THANKS
Radio
I can confirm it's a radio issue. I had the same problem when I was on GB roms. I'm on the T-Mo network and the reboots stop when I turn the radio off and go wifi only. I've found the reception to be better on ICS roms but the reboots are still there. Just a hell of a lot less of them.
I'm on 5.08.00.04 right now. Will try updating to 5.12.00.04 and report back in a little bit.
Okay, 5.12 is no better than 5.08 in terms of these reboots. Still getting them just as frequently. Is there another radio I should be using? I'm under the impression that these are the two newest ones and the ones you need to run GB and and CM ROM.
What I don't understand is that I've had Gingerbread on my phone for months, and 5.08 presumably even longer than that. But before a few weeks ago, I've never had a problem with my N1 just rebooting itself. Anyone have any insights on this?
Have you tried wiping /data?
Backup first.
OK first, I will say that I have been reading for days and days and am getting nowhere at all. I am running out of time as I am leaving Monday backpacking from OKC to Portland to meet a friend, then proceeding immediately to about 35 national parks. I HAVE to get this thing functional so that I can depend on it on the road for communication. Its current state makes me nervous. I got this tablet already rooted, custom stock rom, and with an unlocked ICS boot loader version 0.3.11. The only problems with it were the common charger/screen response issue. For $100, I can deal with that.
I flashed the Lightspeed from from the main list, everything went well... Until it rebooted the first time. Since then, directly after the bootloader screen, it briefly shows what looks like semi-colorful TV static, then shows boot animation and boots into the OS. It has never frozen on either screen.
I decided Lightspeed was not at all what I wanted, so I flashed CM10. I have yet to find anywhere in the Aroma installer where I can choose the apps installed, ONLY THEME CUSTOMIZATION. After the flash, it kept the boot animation from CM, and loaded right back into what looked like Lightspeed, and shows Lightspeed in the about menu also. I reflashed it, choosing a different boot animation to test, and did the same thing again, except it loaded ZERO extra apps at all, not even the stock bloatware. Nothing from any of the 3 roms. I reflashed Lightspeed, same thing again. No extra apps and just bare basic stuff. EXCEPT SUPERUSER. THAT DID LOAD ONTO IT EACH TIME. I haven't lost root access, the recovery works fine.
I flashed the V8 bootloader, and tried the above again. Same issues still. All of them. I have read until I'm blue in the face. If there is a way to fix this without using a PC, that would be grand. I have very limited PC access.
Anyone have any ideas? I have followed every single step 100%, I'm positive. I'm not new to rooting, flashing, and jailbreaking (doesn't apply here I know),"so lay it on me.
EDIT- I downloaded the 4.0.4 FLEX-Reaper rom and going to try that now and then I give up for the night. Tomorrow is the last day I have to mess with this before I leave. I tried to upload screenshots of the problems, but it won't let me attach them. Maybe that is another problem. Ugh who knows. Help
EDIT- That rom bricked my tablet. Through that brick, I found a working solution for the SoD, found a way to recover without files on external SD, *THIS FIXES THE BRICKS CAUSED BY CM10 AND REFLEX!!!* and I didn't lose anything. This thing is back in pristine order. I can finally sleep! Will post later on how I did it. I need sleep now.
Hey everyone, let me start off that I love XDA and I have been using this site for years! So let me give you a little history. I am still on 4.4.4. Recently I finally updated it to 5.0 and retained root, sweet! I also had a custom lollipop recovery that allowed me to go back to 4.4.x. However, I needed the wireless tether function and I could not find a way to get it unlocked without flashing some mod (which would brick my phone) so I used ODIN to flash back to a rootable tar image that I have always used. It was 4.4.2 on NI2 Kernal. Now normally, no matter how many times I ODIN'ed it, flashed it, restore a backup, everything would be up and running in no time. However, lately my phone has not been able to connect to the network completely for some reason. I can make/receive calls and texts. Anything using data though would not work. I called Verizon to see if they could reset something from the back end and they saw me and connected and running. Needless to say, their help ended almost immediately. I am currently running Ricks ROM v19.2 G900VVRU1ANI2 and was only able to connect to data one time a couple of days ago. I had to restart though and when it booted back up, it lost the data again. It does show that I am connected to 4G LTE, strong signal. I have tried the stock ROM 4.4.2, fresh install of Ricks ROM, restore my backup of Ricks Rom (maybe two weeks old), tried Eclipse ROM, nothing seems to be working. I've never submitted anything on here asking for help so this is a first for me cause normally I can fix any problems I create, however, I cannot figure this out for the life of me. Does anyone have any suggestions that I can try? Thanks in advance!
