I recently got my old 8125 replaced, and the new one seems to have significantly less battery. On a day with 10 hours of standby and 3 hours of usage, I got it down to 23%. What do I do?
do you have the v2 rom installed ? I noticed a much better battery life when i moved from v1.x.x to v2.x.x

What type of usage? Streaming audio , wireless connectivity etc will all lower your battery life, the one thing that seems to lower mine fastest is actual phone calls.
i was post there about the batterie :
http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=47435
Battery Drain
I had the same problem. Within one hour of unplugging my phone, the battery level was down to 80%. I upgraded to the 2.17 ROM and am amazed at the battery life I am getting now. It also seemed to speed up my MDA siginifcantly.
I'm using http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=45295 <- The custom one.
I'm connected to EDGE during usage, but that wasn't such a big deal with my previous phone.
I made 3~4 phone calls that all lsated under 5 minutes, so I don't know what the problem is.
The only difference I have between these phones is that on my older phone, I used the I-Mate ROM, and have SPB pocket+ with some extra software installed. On my new phone, I increased the glyph cache to 4000-something and enabled cleartype in landscape and portrait.
The battery life on my MDA is TERRIBLE too!! I have no complains except for the battery life and the unstability sometimes. I have to restart the device at least 2 or 3 times a day due to freezing. I figure the rom upgrade would fix that but I still have NO CLUE on how to do a rom upgrade. I've asked several times, and have yet to be answered with a newbs guide to unlocking and upgrading roms
BTW, I'm using a mac so I can't sync to a PC...Any other way to upgrade roms?? Cab files that can be emailed to my phone etc??
DJ Swivel - I'm finding that this board is extremely intolerant to questions and newbies. You'll have to do a lot of digging to find what you're looking for, I've asked numerous questions (and I know a lot, used to work on the Pocket PC team at Microsoft) but no one bothers to answer.
I think there are a lot of selfish people in this forum, IMHO.

I found quite the opposite these are some of the least rude and most helpful boards I read. What exactly about these replies was rude BTW?
I never used the word 'rude'. In fact, it's the opposite - people ask questions and the rest of the board simply ignores them. I've read through just about every thread on this board, and most of the time when someone posts a question that should have been answered in the initial post no one bothers to respond. It's not that people are rude, they're not. In fact, they're friendly - when they decide to actually help someone.
I read through 20+ pages in the unlock thread. The original poster of the unlock file never explained the difference between Unlock and CID Unlock. Despite there being 20+ pages in the thread, not one person bothered to answer the numerous questions about what they were. I find that typical for this board. If the initial poster cared about people who don't know what that is, or if the responders would help the people who were asking this board would be a much more useful resource.
Please, stop arguing and help me D:
For me, I had crazy battery drainage when I had the fake MiniSD in the slot (you know the black peice that comes with the Wizard). I seen some significant battery performance after I installed my 2gb MiniSD. I know it sounds weird but its actually true.
I use EDGE all the time, I connect my Wizard to my car whenever I'm driving. I never use the radio. I watch videos while I'm in class and I play Bubble Breaker for hours at a time.
Its funny that in the end of the day, I still have 50% battery life remaining. This is what I hate because I really dislike charging my battery from halfway. I want it completely drained, so I spend couple hours on the phone talking to a friend of mine.

I completely agree...I hate having to ask the same question OVER and OVER again, but nobody wants to help. Whoever moderates the forum should just post a sticky with basic things such as ROM upgrades, and basic newb information to prevent the numerous unreplied threads....

Or you could get off your ass and search. I knew nothing a week ago and in one day I was able to unlock and reflash my phone just from posts in this forum. If you're not getting an answers its probably because countless people sign up for an account and make a bunch of posts that have already been answered several times without even searching. NO ONE is going to spoon feed you so stop crying and click that search link. And you could also show a little respect to the people on this board that have made all these tools and custom roms possible. They're not making any money and they don't owe you anything.
I don't generally have to ask many questions in the forum but I find that people are very helpful on this site.
people don't get paid for posting and answering questions so I think it is unfair to complain, I have a htc wizard yes, the battery life isn't amazing but it should last a day easily, I probably make about half an hours worth of phone calls a day, use wireless for a couple of hours browsing ( using phone to post this) send a few texts. listen to music and browse net using gprs a couple of hours a day while comuting but still manage to have over 30% battery left at end of the day, personally I wouldn't expect the battery to last much longer, don't forget you are not just using a phone.
Cheers

Actually with a Li-ion battery, you should avoid completely discharging your battery. You should charge as often as possible in fact.

during the 3 hours usage, what did you do on your device whether using Wlan/ Bluetooth/ Window Media Player or so on? Could you enumerate all of those you did during the 3 hours usage?

Well thats the problem! Buy a real computer, nobody cares about Macs. But in the spirit of not being a douche if your mac has an intel processor you can always get apple's windows emulator and run windows that way. I still suggest buying a real computer though.

Note that real computers:
1. Have a consistent user interface across programs and contexts.
2. Don't need daily patches just to keep them running.
3. On the other hand, have significant improvements in features and performance on a continuing basis.
4. Work they way you wish they would work.
5. Plus they look cool, not like a left-over from a 1960s episode of the Outer Limits.
While unfortunately I am stuck with Windows, I support every True American that stays with Apple through thick and thin.
Seriously, one of the big problems with discussion boards is that you can search, but that doesn't mean you'll find... Usually you just get a link to a thread and you then have to go through multiple pages of posts to either (a) find the one bit of information you need, (b) find the final solution which in some cases may take weeks' worth of posts to unfold, or (c) finally conclude that there is not a solution. I totally agree that there should be a better FAQ. And "someone should really do that." (not me)
My company got 800 of these little gems from Vodafone, and loaded up some software from Broadbeam (now MobileAware) that is supposed to let us stay in contact with our offices no matter where we are on the planet.
It was a good idea, but was implemented poorly: roaming coverage had/has huge holes, and the little bricks were beyond the mental capabilities of many they were issued to. Some of those guys need directions operating a light switch, so you can imagine what they are like with a PDA.
Anyway, while on a 3 day layover in Melbourne in March, sitting in sight of a cell tower, I couldn't connect. That's when I discovered XDA Developers.
I spent 2 days reading, and reading, heeding Pof's advice, and finally got the nerve to flash a radio rom, going from 1.03 to 1.27. And I connected right away.
After that, I became a frequent flasher right away. It just gets simpler all the time, thanks to some hard work by the guys cooking roms (Dutty, jasjamming, Des and others), and people like Pof and MrVanx who put together excellent guides. I flashed some of the early versions of WM6, but they didn't work with our company software, so I learned how to downgrade. It wasn't always easy, some times the Hermes would freeze, but it was remedied by reading some more, and reflashing the Radio Rom.
And finally, jasjamming got Black 3.01 out, and for me, it worked like a charm. Quick as a fox, and even ran the lame company wares.
And yet, with all the reading I was doing, and seeing all the admonitions by the moderators to other noobies like me, some people just seem to want someone else to fix their little issues. Sending messages to the guys cooking ROMs, asking questions like "why doesn't my girflriend answer on the first ring since I flashed", or "Why is my battery life so bad when I have the phone, wifi, and bluetooth on"? There are places here in XDA Developers for questions like that, if you really feel you must ask. It's just not in with all the cutting edge discussions.
So, one of the best cookers has been driven away, and its a damn shame. I'm sincerely hoping that this forum and wiki will be a source of solutions and new programs for a very long time.
jasjamming, I'm scheduled to be back in in Melbourne for 3 days around the 23rd. If you see this, it would be my great pleasure to buy you all the Crown Lager you can handle. It would my way of thanking you and by proxy, all the others who have done so much work.
I'd like to also reiterate what GreatGrey has said. Many thanks to all the cookers and experts on here. I know I haven't really posted anything on here before, but that's because I never felt I had anything of value to write. However I have spent many an hour, reading and digesting the information on here, and thanks to the information on here, i have been able to make the most out of my jasjam. (and it's good to know that one of the great cookers was from Melbourne - best city in Australia - OK, maybe i'm a little biased on that comment )
What a great thread
It is a shame to see where things are heading, and I admit, despite trying other ROMs, that I end up defaulting to JJ's Black ROMs because he's a local boy (i too am from Melbourne) and his support for the Telstra network is a welcome addition.
To echo above, I havn't posted that much either, but I am the type to "read lots, speak once"
So, for what its worth, thanks for what you have given us so far JJ, the courage, the roms and the fantastic attitude
Now that i brought many of you since you thought it exists that was my question. I really want to but roms and games on my ppc but im sorta afraid of over pushing the buttons and eventually wearing them down significantly.
Has any ever tryed this before? Or know where these may be sold?
what a waste of space....
Austinsync - is it really necessary for you to be a prick all the time?
If you have nothing useful to say, ignore the thread and keep your short-tempered, obnoxious opinions to your self - I am sick of reading posts by you that are either unhelpful or downright vitriolic. It's unnecessary and does nothing to improve the either the quality of poeple's posts or make them read anything.
And to answer the OP's question, there is a bluetooth games controller - never tried it with a hermes and would be interested to hear from someone who has.

thank you for the bluetooth controller link, ill for sure check it out.
I agree with some of the posters here that Austinsync's comment is un-called for. I know you do not tolerate some kinds of questions well Austinsync, but this particular Hermes board has remained fairly flaming/sarcasm free (by comparison to the upgading board for example).
So
Do not reply to a post if you cannot do one of the following:
Reply with the knowledge you undoubtedly have
Reply with guidance on how to use the forum if it's a new poster
Report the the post if you think it is "unworthy" of the forum
Obnoxious, rude, overly sarcastic comments and flaming will be met with a ban in future (of varying length) for any user who ignores this guidance and site rules.

I agree. This whole XDA Dev forum is being spoilt by lack of tolerance by some . All of us were new at this once and although there may well be some real offenders (who fail to take even basic advice from the stickies) I think we should leave it to the moderators to 'address' these people.
Mike (Channon) is there no way of you moderators classifying each post so that the 'less helpful ones' are normally not shown when main stream browsers view the posts? This may be a Forum capability that the server software lacks but it would be very useful especially in some of the rather long posts where getting to the detail can take so very long because of poor posts by some.
A filter to take out the 'less than helpful' would be really good - if used carefully.
Good luck....

Hi Tony
There is no automatic facility for this. There can be filters for certain words but they don't work very well and posters can avoid them by deliberate mis-spellings etc. The odd swear word may be ok in the eyes of some provided it is not used as a means to abuse fellow members.
As far as avoiding the general membership seeing useless or abusive posts goes, there is no immediate way of doing this. Only when a Mod or Admin spots something or it is reported does it get moderated. The prevailing feeling in Mod/Admin circles is to try to hit a balance of freedom of expression against perfect manners and etiquette. So, of course, we will never keep everyone happy or even most members happy. Both those that hate noob posts and those that like gentle politeness will not be satisfied as we hover around the middle between the two extremes. Despite this, I feel it is the correct approach. So as above when we get a post that falls the wrong side of the line, I tend to leave it for all to see but also post the condemnation of it as well. Other moderators may delete the post. This can cause problems as the following posts from members can tend look odd as they appear to be replying to something that no longer exists. (I may obscure flagrant swearing however).
On the whole this particular Hermes board has been friendly. Bigger problems come in upgrading when you have the inevitable conflict between Noobs trying to upgrade and Gurus trying to develop ROMs- the clash of the Tytns as I like to think of it The true Gurus tend to keep out of this as they are the ones that originally made it possible to cook the ROMs and their task was over a long time ago. They are waiting to get their teeth into newly released devices and kick off another round of development. The cycle will always end though, at the stage where Noobs conflict with ROM Gurus - and that is where we are at now, made worse of course by the doubling in members on-line at any one time since last year.
Mike
This is a pretty nice place overall. Nicely run, too.
Anyway, the bluetooth controller listed above looks pretty darn cool. Too bad it's so expensive.
Is there any way to get a normal usb controller, coupled with a usb adaptor to run on the hermes? I mean... i have NO idea about how drivers work on the hermes... So this whole idea could be rediculous... but if it gets the gears in the head spinning... why not?

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think that would require USB-host functionality, which HTC has been studiously ignoring for quite a while now.

I do not contribute, since I do not know anything of programming, but at least, read and support the work of many, many people, which do it for free. However, one of the things I will never do is demand anything here, only wait patiently.
Since I bought my Tytn two years ago, one of the reasons I bought the Shift (and very soon the Diamond) was the existence of "xda-developers" and the people which is in here.
Please, be more sensible to all of us: read the forum if you like, take and use the software which suits to you, but never, never demand anything here. The only thing you can do is to be grateful to all those unknown people which make possible the existence of this site.

i agree 100% with you am a user of windows based mobile since 2003 and i still use it because of this forum, it always made any phone i buy worth 4 or 5 times more than its reall value, even the shift now if it coasts 1400
i would say my return value is like that
600 for vista laptop side
300 for winmo side
the remainder is what this site will give me and guess what after 1 year from today the value will be another 900 dollars which is more than the original value where you have bought this phone at

Firstly, take your caps lock off, it means youre shouting!
Secondly, I have owned a Shift since the day it was released in the UK. these forums have been invaluable to me personally. Using the forums I have: -
Liberated my Shift
Dual Booting my shift with XP
Solved a Wi-fi problem
Taken advice on the dissapearing SD card issues
And will be trying the new ROM
How can you possibly say its a waste of time. Its comments like yours (which are obviously written in anger) that really annoy me. I am not a programmer so I cannot assist with ROMs etc, but I check this forum everyday and I am thankful the guys/gals at XDA-Developers keep this site up and running for FREE for the likes of you and me.
I suggest you get off your high horse and apologise. If it wasnt for the likes of Cmonex, Prof and Febelus (who worked so hard finding XP drivers) sites like XDA-Developers would not exist, then we'd all have to work a lot harder to make our devices more usuable.

I dont know how to program and therefore Iam very happy with this site it helps me a lot there is a answer here for most problems and there are people here dedicating a lot of there spare time to help us and I suppose themself out . we should salute them not attack them .
There is ofcourse a better solution please stay of this site or keep silent.
Agree with everyone's comments - firstly, please respect the work that has already taken place...it is not insiginificant as you would have us all think. Secondly, liek me you propbably cannot contribute to code work, but you CAN contribute support by discussing experiences no matter how small.
Communities are about sharing, not sitting back waiting for those doing the work to deliver rewards at your feet...wake up...

You are right. I come here regularly, so that I could learn something and make my devices for better usage by extending and expanding their capabilities. This forum is more educative than anything else. Sometimes you have to wait for a better result. This is not a paid forum or support. Everyone here is putting their free cycles and making these devices more powerful and useful. the more you wait, the more you learn. Majority of times it takes a lot of time, because it is step by step advancement not a single day work, because most of us have to learn and understand device architecture and remove barriers; even a human's birth takes well more than 9 months and patience. There will be people like pcAngel, who would want everything right immediately, well then, they should not buy Shift.
Thank you very much to everyone, who is contributing to make our devices powerful.
My 2 cents

That being said, after powering through his 12 year old fresh on a post board rant, I am still lost as to what if anything this troll wants to express other then the " I am entitled to it because I [email protected]#$ing say so" post of the ignorant. That being said I am curious, junior, whether your 12 year old idiot ass, understands what goes into reverse engineering a device ROM and then building a custom built ROM? Please let us know so we can add you to the project.
Jackass...
Well..........
I agree with saiweb, worldpcdude and aquasesh....
What if anything has pcangel contributed? You show your complete ignorance of the device by basically missing the point of XDA altogether...
The likes of pof / thaihugo / cmonex etc that have made invaluable progress for us all in regards to the shift's functionality should be respected and appreciated...
Yes many of us would like things faster but if you can't add to the collective through your own abilities at least have the common courtesy of not showing you complete lack of intelligence by your ill advised, impolite initial post...
If you have nothing constructive to say, spare US ALL (yes I shouted that) your indignant rant and just say NOTHING AT ALL...
Any basic research into the shift would have provided you an understanding of what it would do and where it's shortcomings were and many of us bought a shift (I was one of the first in the UK to have one) with this acceptance...
XDA has shown over many years they are masters at making a device do what it was never designed to / intended to do, and we have all been the better for it.... We need more people like the XDA developers and LESS PEOPLE LIKE YOU...

Men of Little Faith.......
Someone please inform this fellow that XDA Developers is not a government department. Deep down I have a feeling that the guy never meant what was stated. My gut feeling is that his is bad case of a stale joke. So let us all laugh off the joke and live happily ever after......
I hate cowards. The fellow started this thread and vanished. If he/she/it is serious about the nasty comments why not post a response in defence of his position. He is the type that start bar brawls and quietly slip out while jaws are being broken.
Most of us bought our Shifts with full knowledge of its limitations. We all know the hardware is fantastic but the problem is the supplied software. Its like hTC merely built for us a very nice house but supplied crap furniture. And someone is working on the best formula to get us the perfect furniture for our beautiful house. Can anybody in their right mind start abusing the person who is working on a formula to supply the furniture for free??????
I bet this guy has never made similar rants against hTC. Yet he has the audacity to insult the guys who are working to make the Shift the device that we all yearn for. Methinks the fellow should be bumped off the forum!

That's two words.... if not more.
...the forum done a lot for me.
My Shift changed from useless to useful.
OK, the development is a bit slow, but there are people who do their work on a free base.
Many thanks to them!!!!

I am reposting my response in hopes that the Moderators will read it and do something about it...
We have a problem here. There are 100s of roms, each claiming to be the best thing since sliced (ginger)bread. I, like many readers, dont have the time or know-how to check out every single rom out there. So, we ask for other people's opinions on which are good, which are bad. It is completely useless and incredible time consuming to read through every thread about every rom, because they all say the same things. If you look at the above thread, you see the normal responses...
There needs to be some better moderation in this forum for it to be useful at all. At this point we have dozens of threads with 500+ posts, and people are expected to read through the whole thing, usually filled with usually bumps, or "i like this", or "this sucks", to find anything useful. the search box returns ALL relevant items, which means that every single post mentioning a rom will be returned.
I know that I want to get the most out of my device, but between working, commuting, volunteering, and trying to spend time with my friends, I have very little time to devote towards trawling through the treasure trove of junk posts that litter this forum.
My proposal is to make threads for roms be on topic, and eliminate useless postings.
People, if you like a rom, rate it high. If you dont, rate it low.

What I hate even more is the users who claim the same fact. Minutes after flashing a new Rom it's amaaaaazing. It's soooo fast, the battery-drain is gone, it's smooth, the dev is a geeeeenius etc. When you say something about it better brace yourself as WW-III is about to start. No bad things please about the favorite Rom!
Guess it's the way these forums work. Say something positive (usually B.S.): great! Say something negative (even with valid arguments): GO AWAY!
Oh well.
Better moderation isn't needed. Neither are lazy sods who want to be spoonfed.
Think of the work the devs have done.
Think of the hours and hours of coding and testing they do.
Think of the fact they do it for free or beer money.
Then think of someone who's posted about 30 times who cannot be bothered reading about these ROMs and making his own mind up.
Think of a whingeing brat.
I don't think it's a case of 'better moderation' being needed. If you see threads like this which are either pissing contests or made by people too lazy to do the hard yards, simply report the thread.
I've found the mods are normally very quick to either move a thread to the correct part of the forum if it's in the wrong spot, or close the thread post haste if it really is one of those mindless threads.
I've reported several (4 or 5 from memory) of the latter over the last few days and all of them have been closed within the hour.
Can't get better moderation than that IMHO. My point is, the mods aren't mindreaders nor are they here 24/7. If you see a thread that shouldn't be, let them know and more often than not if will be dealt with.
I got back to flashing about a month ago and it took me roughly 20 minutes to figure out which ROMs were the most popular ones. It's not that hard.
The rest of the ROMs mostly have short and to the point feature lists, sometimes youtube videos and screenshots too.
If anything, perhaps a complete ROM list would be handy.

We all have busy lives, but crucially what we don't have is the same usage profiles and aesthetic tastes as others. What makes ROM A the best thing since sliced bread for Person A may make it a complete toilet for someone else.
It's a bit like buying shoes; if you send your mate out to buy some because you can't be bothered to go out to look at them and perhaps try a few on, don't be too surprised if you end up as a fashion victim with blisters.

I think that the bigger problem is with pointless posts within threads. If there was an option on the report menu for "Not constructive to conversation" or something, I would report away, and hope that people get the point that no one cares if they want to wait until someone else posts, no reason to tell us about it.
Edit: I just tried the report button for a pointless post. lets see if it works.

Agreed. Where we run into a problem, however, is when roms A, B, and C all have as a description:
"Fast, Better Battery Life, and gives a reach around upon start up." Seeing the same description over and over again is as pointless as having no description. neither one tells me, the client, anything useful. This one is not a moderation problem, but a problem in communication. You spend a lot of time making your rom/kernel/widget the best it can be. Spend a little more time and tell me why I should care, why it is better than your competition.
Oh ok I have a idea! Let's all instead of using the search button just start a new thread every time! That way xda developers will be full of pointless threads that people can spend hours looking through! Great fun yes!
If I was a moderator here I think I could quite easily give you a answer in just two words...

Better moderation is not needed (at least not because if this "problem")
I you want to find the best ROM MAKE the time to read the threads (typically the first post of the OP and the last few pages to see the current feedback is enough to get a pretty good picture) If you don´t have the time just pick a ROM based on the typical screenshots and description and try it.... if you aren´t satisfied, pick another. Most ROMS differ little in actual performance and any modification that really result in better speed/battery life ect.. are quickly adopted by the various developers.

This pretty much says it all.
We aren't here to spoon feed anyone. If you can't find a ROM that suits you, I suggest you go elsewhere. This is not "XDA Smartphone Support", this is "XDA Developers".
What a ridiculous thread

I have to agree. If you can't spend the time needed to run a custom rom then maybe you should just stay stock. Stock roms work just fine for the average person that doesn't have the time to put into a custom rom.
It is not the moderation teams job to do your research for you. We have enough on our plates dealing with threads like this one.
