Does anyone have an expected release date for this yet? I may be moving from the UK to the US soon so just wondering what to get and where to get it!
HTC insn't going into full scale production untill autumn.
And it's usefullness in the USA wil be somewhat limited.
It only has Tri band GSM so will be incompatible with some networks, also the 3G radio is a different standard in the USA to the Euro 3G - CDMA V W-CDMA I believe, but I'm sure someone will highlight what the acronym is. Thats why no USA networks have expressed any desire to release the Universal - maybe there will be another model bought out for the USA markets...
There will be a USA release eventually. HTC would be stupid to not make a version of the Universal that worked well in the USA.
There's lots of speculation on various message boards that HTC has already created a USA version of the Universal. Supposedly, it's being called "Apache" while it's still in testing.
There are lots of people in the USA using HTC devices right now. I can't imagine HTC deciding not to accept anymore money from those USA customers.
Pretty much everyone with an HTC device (or any other brand of Pocket PC for that matter) will give the Universal serious consideration when it's released. If HTC just ignored them, well that would not be a sound business decision.
Expect a version of the Universal to be released in the USA for use on the new EVDO networks (Sprint and Verizon).
Now Sprint and Verizon may decide not to carry the device, but I fully expect HTC to at least offer it to them.
do sprint and verizon even offer gsm(sim) cards? i bought my jam from dubai when i was over there for summer vacation and now i'm using it with cingular. and if the device is released in the US it would be a while after its released in the UK and rest of the world. If you haven't noticed USA is really behind in the cell phone market.
USA may be behind in the cell phone market, but all of the previous HTC products were released in the USA, so I don't see why the Universal would be any different.
The Wizard will be released in the USA, so why not the Universal? I could definitely see HTC ,aking a version for the USA. And probably making a CDMA version as well.
It could be
Sorry Guys, But Cellphone Networks in USA sux! Your mobile phone carries got the "older model" planns to sell devices. Europe and Asia is at leats 5 years advanced than USA.
Here in Brazil GSM Networks are since 2002 so we got euro carriers with new terminals, 3G is already here.
HTC is preparing a special edition for you guys
[]s'
pH
What are you talking about? USA networks may be behind, in general, but both Sprint and Verizon have EVDO networks. That is pretty up to date technology.
HTC may very well be preparing a special version, but I highly doubt Brazil is getting anyting more technically advanced than the USA (from HTC at least)...
HTC sent the same Harrier and Blue Angel to the USA that they sent everywhere else. HTC is also sending the same Wizard to the USA that they sent everywhere else. Why should the Universal be any different?
Well, it might be a little different (hopefully it will be made for CDMA/EVDO).
your carriers are well behind the uk and most of the rest of the world-maybe not 5 years though!the universal will be the same as the jam release wise-asia then europe then the us.just a shame your carriers are so slow that they cannot utilise the new technology the universal bringsand what is with using a different frequency (850) is it just to be awkward?!lol.l have no doubts the universal will be available everywhere including the us
First off, I have to say that the Apache is not a CDMA version of the universal. Rather, it is a CDMA version of the wizard.
Second, yes the USA networks are a little behind the rest of the world. It sucks that we have to wait for new devices months after they have been released to the rest of the world. However, that may be changing. Check out the last couple pages of this thread.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=22813&start=125
It is looking more and more like the new 6700 sprint will be releasing is the Apache. Right now the target release date is sometime from August to October. This would be amazing because it would be (as far as I know) the first 5.0 device released anywhere. It would be released in the US before Europe and Asia, and it would even be release before the wizard was released anywhere.
So maybe the US is catching up. Here's hoping
The USA networks are not lagging behind Europe and Asia. At least not all of them. Again, both Sprint and Verizon have EVDO networks. That is not lagging in any way. EVDO is a 3G technology, and it fully supports all the features on any of todays cell phones (even the Universal). The only thing is the networks are CDMA. But CDMA is not lagging behing the rest of the world either.
Actaully saltydawg, only verizon has EV-DO right now. Sprint won't be lauch there's till the end of the year. We should start seeing EV-DO phones coming out soon though.
As for what I said abou the USA being behind, that was mainly in reference to the delay in getting new phones to the US.
Zach
***Double post removal***
Sprint does have EVDO right now man. Currently the only devices that officially support it are laptop data cards. People have got it working on their PPC-6600's as well though.
But yes, we should start seeing lots more EVDO devices released soon...
You have got to be kidding me if you think US networks do not lag behind European networks. By the time we get something new, Europe is already moved on to the next best thing. We are at least 2-3 if not 5-7 years behind.
SaltyDawg,
That makes more sense. I guess they just aren't really promoting that. It's pretty cool that some of the 6600s have got that to work though. There is supposed to be an official sprint update for the 6600 coming out in october I think.
Zach
We can argue all day about whether or not the US lags behind in mobile network technology. Whan I can say is that when US carriers decide to go with a technology, it does take awhile to rollout.
HOWEVER, let's think about this. All of the countries we're being compared to are approx 10% of the size of the US. Individual European countries and their respective carriers have NO IDEA what a rollout in the US takes in terms of material, resources, and most importantly, money. Even the whole of Europe doesn't compare in size to the Continental USA.
Cut us a break, guys...
GSM Technology in the US
well, you can argue all day about this but i would say that the US is way behind but we've been catching up some how ... the three main countries which keep on using CDMA is the US, Japan& Korea ... so if anybody really wants a really good phone for the verizon and sprint networks just look at what's available in japan ... they actually have 8.0Mp camera phones out ... while everybody's working on catching up here in the US ... Verizon is actually owned by VODAFONE that is why verizon was first in coming out with 3G with the help of their cousins across the pond ... which i am wondering why t-mobile doesn't use their connection being t-mobile ... the largest global wireless company (they have service in most of the countries in the industrialized world ... they even have dibs on singtel which is one of the powerful wireless carriers in asia) ...
t-mobile usa and t-mobile uk don't even work together (as per comment by one of the tech support people from t-mobile usa) ... i was trying to set up blackberry connect on my Sony Ericsson P910i which was from T-Mobile UK but our friends from T-Mobile US told me that they can't assist me ... so i ended up doing it myself ... as usual ....
hopefully the US gets hold of more phones, marketing somewhat sucks y'know ... i guess it's all about the blackberry over here in the US .... which, personally has an ugly interface and worse conventional phones which are almost as expensive as Palm, Pocket PC, and Symbian devices ...
Well the bottom line is not all USA networks a lagging way behind Europe and Asia. At least not anymore. Sprint and Verizon both have EVDO. EVDO is a 3G technology. So no way can anyone say Sprint and Verizon are lagging way behind Europe and Asia.
Now the phones they release on those networks may be a different story. But again, that has nothing to do with HTC. HTC releases the same phones in the USA that they release in Europe and Asia. So anyone saying HTC won't release the Universal in the USA is not looking at the recent history. And anyone saying all USA networks are lagging behind Europe and Asia is not looking at the present. Sprint and Verizon, with their EVDO, specifically.
UMTS in the USA
All I can say is soon, as in September/October UMTS will be deployed in 9 major cities in the US. The carrier in question already has a re-branded BlueAngel for sale. Word from marketing is that shortly after UMTS is deployed they will start carrying one of the re-branded HTC Universal devices .
Is there a custom ROM in development to accomplish this? The Leo looks to be phenominal - just no due dates in the US.
TIA
I bought at expansys-usa.com.
Unlocked.
Regards.
Right on. Ty for the reply. So I should just be able to load up a custom Leo ROM, stuff in my simcard, and use all the AT&T contract features I currently use on my AT&T Tilt 2?
TY again!
Well, just keep in mind, the model being sold at expansys-usa is the Euro model, meaning no 3G service in the US. However, you can still place calls over GSM network (both ATT and T-Mobile) and use EDGE data connection.
Cheers,
S.
instead of rushing on getting one like i did you can wait till tmobile releases their's sometime around march(rumor) and get it unlock for att. This phone would be a lot better with 3g.
Thanks for all the info ya'll!
T-Mo and AT&T do not use same bands !!!
Please note that while AT&T uses 850Mhz band T-Mo uses the 1700Mhz. What will happen, if the T-Mo version will be 1700/2100 as I suspect, is that if it will be unlocked, even if it will show on screen it is on a 3G network, it will be for uploading only, and will not download a thing.
If the advise is to wait, I would wait until Telstra in Australia will start selling HD2, and import it from there, as their 'NextG' network is 850Mhz.
I know cause I just did the same with my HD. Got an aussie unit, and unlocked it. (internet buy)
As for myself, based on my 6 months experiance with the HD, I will get tomorrow my EU version. Yes, will not have 3G, but quite frankly, the 3G is almost useless for me because at leat on the HD it drained my 1350mAh battery pretty quick, being on 3G. I had to install WMlonglife and has been on a 2G network most of the time. Another thing - It is pretty easy to be on Wi Fi at home, at office, at starbucks, etc.. lots of free access points. For emails/SMS the 2G is good enough regardless.. So - I went with the EU version. BTW- I know expansys sells it for $784, but check www.networkingrus.com (hope I do not violate a forum rule, if I do, I appologise) but they sell for far less, and I have purchased 3 phones from them already, got great service and when I was over seas and my phone broke, I purchased one from them , and they shipped it to me there, it got stuck in customs, they got it back, and re-shipped to my other location while I was travelling. Very honest, and price is good.
Would i wait 3 moths? I would say yes if it was rock solid date, and guaranteed to work on the AT&T band. I decided not to wait any more, when SSPL already works (I am a 28014 addict)
Hope i helped here..

I agree....mine is an unlocked euro version too, and I am using mine on AT&T with no problems! It is even pretty fast on the Edge data network..... in addition, I use mine with my Verizon mifi modem for wifi, and it is blazing fast.....I am falling madly in love with my HD2 now that there are some custom roms available.....LOL
Later.....
BTW, I too got mine there.......they are great people to deal with!

Dang! I did not know of that place. I bought mine on ebay. It came with everything and a 8GB memory card instead of 2GB. Bought it for $764 + 8% cashback.
Also using mine on AT&T no prob
I bought a Euro model as well, using it in the US on T-Mo and not regretting a thing: IN fact, I had a HD the year before. No 3G, don't care.
On top of that, I got my wife a TP2 through T-Mo. She used it 10 days, finding the 3G to be disappointing. I didn't do a head to head between the T-Mo 3G and my EDGE, that would just be silly.
My concern about a T-Mo version of Leo, assuming the rumors are correct, is what happens to the T-Mo specific functions, and can it be flashed by one of the magnificent custom ROM's available here on XDA? The only T-Mo specific feature I can come up with is 5 fav.....but I'm not sure that's even offered anymore.
The question is.....just for laughs.....can a T-Mo branded Leo be flashed with a custom ROM?
Agreed with pretty much everyone who went and got their HD2 and using it on ATT or TMobile. I bought mine a week after ATT released the Tilt2. I sold my Tilt2 few days after I got the HD2. I never looked back and the device is sexy as hell. Enjoying it even more now because with custom ROMs the internal storage is sweet (as good as the TP2/Tilt2).
I purchased my Leo in Hong Kong knowing full well that it would not work on the 3G with AT&T. That was not my main concern. It works very well. Love it especially with some of the mods to have 20 shortcuts instead of 9.

unlocked phone is custom ROM ready..

Don't worry, if you get a T-MO leo when it is offered, you can always unlock it and put a cooked ROM on it, BUT, don't ever try to get serviced after, because they will deny any warranty repairs. Even for obvious malfunation you will be blamed it was a result of flashing..
I never buy the hardware from the service provider. as an AT&T customer i was dumb enough to get an iphone to my daughter, paid $199 for it, and got locked for two years with a monstrous 2 year contact of $43/month (text, broadband, $10 family line). Guess what - phone was broken (screen shattered) after 3 months. they say warranty does not cover screen. $200 repair, 2 years clock started again, phone got nroken again (this POS breaks when you give it a look !) so now I am locked with $43/month plan, and no iphone. yes, AT&T will not let you go even when they know you do not have an iphone any more. My daughter runs a LG vue and pays the $43 until 2011 !!! that has taught me the lesson... I get my phone for real hard cash and never lock myself with contracts... PS: $43 x 24 +199 = $1,231. Boy was i dumb, or what? My new HD2 was $717 +shipping...

Having found my 11 day old Ozzie bought Omnia i900 in the "shop" after it blew its GSM radio, I picked up a HTC Pure on Ebay for just under a third of the price, 7 months old, in 95% good physical condition and 100% operating order. The fact that its not available here was somehow a plus for me. ( yeah dumb I know).
But besides having to get it unlocked off at&T as they bailed out of here ages ago, which took all of 2 hours to get a code done and then remembering that North american mobiles dont like 2100 band 3G and only like 850 3G (Hello Telstra) I seem to have ended up with an otherwise nice little CHEAP HTC Mobile.
Hi board,
I've been closely following the Droid Pro since its announcement, as I love the form factor, and I was wondering if it would ever land in Europe - and as far as I am concerned, in France .
I couldn't find anything about that, but maybe I missed something!
Thanks for any hint!
It does have European 3G(along of course American CDMA 3G), so you could always buy one off ebay get it unlocked and you should be set for use with whatever sim you choose(default is Vodaphone as they have majority shares in Verizon).
Thanks for the advice. Do you know in what the unlocking process consists?
I've read that it was basically hardwired against AT&T & other Verizon competitors but that it would be free for the rest of the world.
Well so far from what I read the Droid 2 and Pro do not work in America or Canada without a firmware hack, but people at XDA are working on to fix that. The unlock is fairly simple, as you call the carrier up and ask for unlock code which should be free if have customer with good standing account, or been with them for like 90 days. I am sure code(s) will be listed somewhere in the coming weeks(it just came to retail stores today as it was online only at first) if you google it.
I was at the AT&T store today and was talking to a sales rep. I am currently with AT&T on family plan and I told him that I was going to cancel my phone (the primary line) to T-Mobile to pick up the DVP.
Well, he told me that a Microsoft rep told him that T-Mobile had a 45 day exclusivity on the DVP starting from the launch date (11/8). Further, the DVP will be on 3 carriers once the exclusivity runs out. Now the speculation on the other two was Verizon and possibly AT&T.
He also said that the 3 WP7 phones at AT&T were under the 45 day exclusivity as well and that other carriers would be carrying the three devices currently at AT&T.
He wasn't sure if and when all this would happen but if in fact AT&T will be getting the DVP soon, I can hold out a bit longer as the only reason I was planning on switching to Tmo was for the DVP.
Don't mean to start a wild rumor thread but thought I share what I heard and would like to know if others have heard something similar.
Happy Holidays...
Thats interesting news.
I'm on AT&T too and planning to move to TMobile just for this phone. Hope you're right.
That's good news. I currently have a Focus but still miss a hardware keyboard. 45 Days would put it right after the holiday season which would allow carriers to make their money before the agreement ends. Let's hope this is true.
I hope someone will be able to enable tethering on the DVP and that will be perfect.
lies that carriers tell you to keep you. dont know for sure tho
i rather have dvp with webos or android. wp7, ill wait till 2nd or 3rd gen

Agreed. I have some doubts that something like this will actuall happen. Nevertheless, I'll give it some time - until the reviews of the new and improved launched (part deux) DVPs.
I'm hoping to hear some more from folks who may knowledge or have heard something similar in the meanwhile.
Would be nice, but I wouldn't hold my breath on this one. If it were true, that would put us 2 weeks out and this would be the first real rumor I've heard. Things like this tend to get leaked in advance. Kind of telling that there hasn't been any FCC filings for the additional radio flavors either. We can still cross our fingers though.

maybe thats the Dell Venue?
the one with android and without the keyboard?
Another clue might be a statement from Greg Milligan of Microsoft Canada: “the first manufacturers are LG, Samsung, HTC, we’ll have those available here in Canada. We also see Dell coming into the market as well and some other manufacturers in 2011”. (http://mobilesyrup.com/2010/11/29/m...ices-with-hardware-keyboard-coming-to-canada/)
In Canada, AT&T frequencies are dominant right now: ever since Bell and Telus stopped expanding their CDMA network and built an all-3G UMTS/HSPA+ national network on 850/1900, pretty much all their new 3G devices are GSM. Add that to Rogers' existing 850/1900 GSM/EDGE/UMTS/HSPA+ network, and you're looking at AT&T frequency compatibility from our three biggest national carriers. They all launched AT&T-compatible Windows Phone 7 devices last month.
The new "urban" carriers - Wind, Mobilicity, Videotron - are running AWS in major cities. But none of these carriers have launched any WP7 devices.
Dell could just launch the DVP in its current configuration on Wind or Mobilicity (or both). It could also launch the DVP as an EDGE-only device on Rogers (very unlikely). Or, it could build a new DVP with 850/1900 3G support and release it on any combination of Rogers, Bell and Telus for a much larger customer base.
was planning to get the t-mobile version, but i am not sure if i should right now
i am on at&t and i dropped my phone in water last week, want a smartphone so bad right now...
Well, it would appear that HTC HD7 may be headed to AT&T. If so, perhaps this will mean that other "exclusive" phones will find it's way to other carriers. One can only hope...
If Canada gets them, I think we'd be in good shape either way. Their bands are fully compatible, so I wouldn't mind plunking down a few dollars more to get it. However, it would have to be unlocked so that might be an issue (hopefully a short one).
Can't wait!
I had my doubts about this, but it seems quite possible. The FCC has approved two models of the Dell Venue Pro:
FCC ID: E2KV03B002
(https://fjallfoss.fcc.gov/oetcf/eas...me=N&application_id=218753&fcc_id='E2KV03B002')
3G band tested: AWS
FCC ID: E2KV03B001
(https://fjallfoss.fcc.gov/oetcf/eas...me=N&application_id=425269&fcc_id='E2KV03B001')
3G bands tested: 850/1900
Note: as far as I can tell, these documents don't preclude the "B001" version from also supporting European 3G on 2100 MHz, since the FCC didn't test the 900/2100 euro bands on the "B002" but we know it has them anyway.
It would only make sense that this would happen.
Dell would be crazy to limit their handsets to the smallest Mobile Carrier in terms of subscribers. Giving Tmobile a leg up is okay but to give it the whole leg would be silly.
I would take the HD7 on the AT&T network as I returned by HD7 on the T-MOBILE network due to signal issues.
I would like to have it on the Sprint Network but that isn't happening anytime soon. I do not like the HD PRO they have rumored to get WP7.
The DVP or the HD7 will be my choices for now. a 4.3" S_LCD on the HD7 would be great/

Well, given recent news of the delay yet again, I wonder if:
1) At this rate, the DVP will be available on AT&T at the same time as T-Mobile
or
2) This is vaporware and never make it to AT&T
Utterly disappointed with Dell....
Just got this link from MS
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsphone/en-us/buy/7/phones.aspx?cmpid=14303401#detail=1568 and was wondering if these bands will work on AT&T. Anyone know?
hmm.....
it only state UMTS 900 and 2100, which are the frequency the rest of the world use
it didn't even state AWS or 1700
interesting

With regards to the 45-day, I'm guessing that we won't hear anything until the new year until the holiday shopping period is over.
