Greetings folks, long time no see
Anyone having a difficult time staying connected to 4G in Houston? From my experience so far, all 3 locations I have tried it out... (BB, Work, Home) are all in "In-Building" 4G coverage area. NONE of them can connect "In-Building". If I walk outside, it will connect then drop sporadically, or not connect at all. 3G has connectivity issues as well, but I want to focus on the big selling point of 4G here.
Any other experiences to speak of?

Guess I should have posted this in the Q&A. MOD: Please feel free to relocate thread.
I have the same experience in the Memorial City (I-10 BW8 W) and East Katy (Fry) area. I'm happy with the 3g speed for what I use the phone for and have only turned on 4g for testing.
Im guessing it might be an issue with both signals from the towers and radio on the EVO. I have called Sprint to express my disappointment with the 4G service. I hope that HTC will make some magic happen with software upgrades. I also have tried the newer radio upgrade but still have issues once im inside of buildings.
just like when the iphone came out there were problems the same is happening now. i was getting good speeds up until a few hours ago here in NJ. my phone says 3G but im getting edge speeds
Not Houston, but same for me...
I am in St. Louis, and although 4G isn't official here yet (last I heard was 6/21) I am seeing the same thing. Indoors, it is almost a crap shoot.
Outside, it will get one "bar" of 4G... sometimes. Never really solidly locks on 4G.
I think it is an issue with the EVO radio firmware, at least I hope so, because I have the luxury of testing it side-by-side with an Overdrive, and I can consistently maintain a 4G signal of 2-3 bars on the Overdrive, if I put it in the window of my office.
Sadly, the Overdrive is seriously outperforming the reception of the Evo in my experiences so far.

I'm in Houston. After doing the PRL update I got great coverage, everywhere except my downtown office (15th floor...so thats to be expected)
had connectivity issues the first day, here on the Northside, but if you update your profile, prl, and take your battery out a few times you may find a change..i did
THIS NEEDS TO BE SETTLED! I think I have an objective view.
I'm in Houston, TX so we have 4G coverage with ClearWire. I got my EVO on Friday, along with everybody else. I went to Best Buy to look at some accessories, while I was there I was chatting with the ClearWire rep running the demo and trying to sign up new customers. He was inside with store with his Clearwire USB dongle and laptop. We decided to run some speed comparisons, so I downloaded 2 speedtest apps from the Android market, one of them being for Speedtest.net. The best speed I got on my EVO with 4G enabled (and 1 bar of 4g) was about 2.25 Mbit down, and 1.1 Mbit up. I ran this test multiple times with me standing next to him, then putting my EVO next to the USB dongle to make sure I was getting the same signal. The rep's laptop, again running the speedtest from Speedtest.net and us using the the SAME servers, he got at least 6 Mbit down and almost 2 Mbit up. The best he got that I saw was like 7.2 Mbit down. He said that earlier that day he got as high as 10 Mbit down.
This is just telling me that it's either the processor that is limiting the speed, or it's the 4G antenna in the EVO. I saw that his 4G signal was pretty good being a bit outside the city, in Katy at Fry Road and I-10. I live just outside downtown I do get 4G inside my home, but again 1 or 2 bars. With my limited investigation I'm going to have to conclude that the network speed is NOT ClearWire's fault, but more like a hardware limitation on the EVO. If someone modded the phone with a better antenna the speed might improve.
About the existing 3G speed and with EVO is WOW! 3G response is soooo much faster on the EVO that it was on my G1. Another comparison is my home AT&T U-verse: I get 5.71 Mbit down and 0.94 Mbit up. I'm trying to think of a way that I can get my TV another way and get ClearWire for home instead of U-verse.
More likely clear is capping us to maintain QoS for direct customers.
Sent from my EVO
Hmm, I'm inside my house on Katy "Fry Rd. @ I10" and have 2 bars. Walk outside the front door no change. Typically outside around the Katy area I get about 2-3 bars.

Just a little upset for the reason being that Sprint would state that their 4G is 10x faster than EVDO. Taking the lower results of EVDO(600Kbps) and comparing it to the higher 4G(6Mbps). I have yet to see 3Mbps downstream on their 4G network in Houston. I have tested Clear's and Sprint's usb side by side and ofcourse it's only capped on Sprint. So on that point its not the same.

I can see that, but even 3G on this phone seems way faster than other phones. I'm sure it has to do with the CPU beign able to render pages much quicker than previous devices.
That said, my 4G speeds are averaging about twice as fast as 3G
Drove down 45 from the medical center to Spring yesterday and got 4G all the way. As far as the downspeed goes, I agree, it's probably QoS since Sprint's 4G network is still in its infant stage.

Thanks for this info, I think you are right, something is capping our throughput. I hope Sprint come out with new firmware patch to resolve this. I am not happy with my less than 2Mbit download speed on 4G!
Well, I wish I was seeing the same coverage as everyone else. I can't get 4G inside at all. I got all the updates last week, but see there is yet another PRL update I was unaware of. *Finders crossed.
I don't think wimax will ever have good indoor coverage. The frequency it runs at is much too high.

Since I work for Clear, I can tell ya'll that we do not cap anything. Also, as far as Sprint goes, they just use and resell our service. I will, however, be willing to be that there may be something with the device that maybe a firmware upgrade may fix but honestly who knows.
I have yet to see anyone get above 4mbs on the Evo...I think it has something to do with the device.
Sprint says they have 4G in Boise, ID and the surrounding area including Nampa, which is where I live (About 20 mi. from Boise). I've been running speed test on 3g and 4g everywhere I go. I'm lucky if I even have the dot on 4G unless I'm in a sprint store or LOS of a tower.
So far, 4G is always half the speed of 3G, almost always. The only time it hasn't been much slower is when I was standing in the sprint store.
On 3G I avg. between 150 to 850 kbps down - 50 to 500ish up.
On 4G I've gotten anywhere from 150 to 3000 kbps down. But anything over 1000 kbps down was when I was standing in the sprint store or within sight of a sprint tower.
Ping is 200 at its low and has been all the way up to 800ms.
As far as which sprint servers I'm connected too, they seem to be anywhere from KS to CA and once in a while in ID or CO.
I don't know about you, but this seems to be wayy slower than what the rest of you are reporting as "slow", sadly. Because at this point, 3g is beating 4g and 3g isn't even close to its capasity. (Got 1.5mpbs down on my iphone 3G)
Wifi works great, 5 down, 1 up even with 0 bars cross the house, by the way.
I love the evo and android, and sprints pricing, but even with millions upon millions of iphones out there, att can somehow keep their speeds up.
I'm almost right there with you. I was driving down I-270 in St. Louis with full 4G bars and I was only getting 1.5 Mbps. I get that through 3G!!! So why am I enduring the pain of this battery life when I got the same speed from my blackberry?
Ok...that's not meant to be answered. I really really really love my Evo, but like any mobile device, it has its flaws.
i have a lot of family in both marsing and nampa, too bad they all have verizon, i myself live in fresno tx and area that is supposedly saturated in 4g according to both clear maps and sprint maps and i am not getting 4g at all, on top on that i one main sprint tower down the street and about 6-7 antennas (repeaters) in fresno, for any small town thats overkill and fresno is small i can get 4g if i walk down the street towards arcola (another small town next door) and in the opposite direction towards houston i get 4g but were i live nothing and the speeds....one 4g test says .65kbps up and 125kbps down
I usually get ~3mbs in st louis. I've had 9mbs bursts too.
Be patient..
I recommend being patient. In my area (where Clear has had a presence for while), as soon as the EVO came out, speeds hit the floor. My 3G was handily beating the 4G speeds I was getting up until a couple of days ago. My guess is that the influx of all these Wimax devices hit their network pretty hard and they're still doing whatever it is they do to bring the speeds back up.
On the brightside, I've gotta give them credit for at least keeping it stable. It may have been slow, but it always seemed to work when I switched to it.
I'm sure if it was AT&T we'd be screwed.

I've only tested 4G through I-55 in Arnold and out in Fenton at Gravois Bluff. Moving I've never hit over 2-2.5mb, and stationary outside the Great Escape theater at Gravois Bluff I hit 3mb once. I have NEVER hit above 3, which is kind of a disappointment. It could just be the fact that Arnold & Fenton are both kinda on the fringe of 4G coverage, but still...
I'll be going into downtown Saturday for the Cardinals game and I'm interested to try it out then actually in the city. Hopefully it's a little better. Sprint, here's your chance to blow my mind with some amazing speeds
P.S. @TeknoJnky DAMN! You're lucky with those 9mb bursts! Thats as fast as my cable connection at home! Jealous...
I test my 4G speed, and it's usually 1/4 of the 3G speed, but i download webpages faster through the browser in 4G, despite the lower bandwidth score. It's a weird phenomenon, but another user on PPCGeeks mentioned the same thing.
so im using a HD2, with the energy rom and tmo just announced that they are rolling out hspa+ in my city (honolulu) so i figured id do a speed test now just to see the difference when they "flip the switches" on 7/21 (my birthday)
so i pull up dsl reports and run the Iphone (bleh)/smartphone speed test choose 3g and........ 126kbps well maybe its a fluke i rerun it and 51kbps WTF!?!?!?!!?!
so i remember mobilespeedtest.com and i try there and..... 134kbps.....starting to get annoyed and when i compare with other tmo subscribers the average is 580~
so my question is is there something i can do to "fix" my speeds? ive got full signal im always showing "H" oh and im using opera 10.0
In Lexington, Ky I get about 400 kbps. In Cincinnati, like 800-900. I just think Tmob's network is really crappy.
hahaha well your crappy is still 4 times faster than me
just odd its SO slow here where hspa+ is going live in a week
before TMO threw the HSPA+ switch here in Tampa, i regularly saw 600-800kbps download speeds. Now with HSPA+ it seems to average about 3mbps-4mbps and Ive seen it reach as high as 5.5mbps.
I just got through with a road trip from Tampa to northern Mississippi where i lost the HSPA+ coverage after leaving Tampa, i saw around a 1mbps in outskirt areas north of Tampa that doesn't have HSPA+ yet, and once we hit the interstate it was GPRS coverage for a majority of the trip with some EDGE coverage here and there. God i forgot how slow GPRS was!
oh i also forgot to mention im using the stock radio rom.....maybe a different radio would improve data speeds?

My birthday's on the 21st as well, you know what this calls for....SURPRISE BIRTHDAY PARTIES!!!!
soooo apparently its just my apartment that sucks, left the house fro work today and didnt get 50 yards and my speeds jump up to 400~
as i keep walking outdoors my speeds go as high as 1.4 and never went below 400. so when i get to work i figure my speeds will go down as im indoors, wrong i kept getting speeds around 500 tho i didnt see the huge jumps that i did outdoors
We're on the list to have HSPA+ flipped on here in Austin next week, but I'm already starting to see the signs...I can now hit 3-5MB downstream just about anywhere in town.
3mbps-4mbps here in ATL
we are getting an average of about 3mbps-4mbps with HSPA+ in Atlanta, GA
Funny thing when I tether I get 12-15 Mbps. only when I tether tho even if its another phone

Since the end of November, most of Texas, it seems, has had a drop in speed/service quality with Sprint's 3G and 4G networks.
In Austin, I would regularly get between 1 and 2 mpbs download on 3G, and up to 6 on 4G. After the end of November, I get between 100-500kbps, if anything, and 4G service has been halved.
I called Sprint and they said that the outage is still in effect and they are working on it. I have experienced the slow network in Austin and Dallas. Very frustrating.
Anyone else?
San Antonio has had some issues as of late. I'm not a heavy data user, but definitely noticed a slowdown.
i live in austin and by my house (campus/hyde parK) speed across 3g has remained pretty constant. im in a low lying area so i have no 4g there
at work (arboretum area) i work at the top of a hill and prefer 4g to work wifi. I can normally get 3-4 and have even got 6 or 7 a handful of tests. i have never seen 3g anywhere (on my evo obv) above about 800 kbs. where are you that you have seen 1-2 mbps? cedar park? round rock?
for reference i just downloaded the 58 mb 3.7 update over 4g in about 2 or 3 minutes.
I live in South Austin, William Cannon and Manchaca, basically, and would always get over 1000kbps there, even though I am in a valley and don't have the best signal.
At work, by Zilker Park, and downtown I consistently used to get between 1 and 2 mbps. I never see 1mbps anymore.
Here is a copy of the email I got back from Sprint Support:
Dear Mr. _____:
We regret any frustration this matter may have caused. Our records indicate that there is a trouble ticket open for the Austin area. Customers may experience connectivity issues during this time. We are currently investigating this matter for the root cause of the issue.
Sincerely,
SprintCares
Im in San Antonio as well and it has defiantly been throttled down. you might want to try this little tweek it helped me alot since im on the line of 1604 and service really craps out there.

service around 1604 has sucked bad lately, same with out in helotes, and just about everywhere i go normally.
I live in Houston and I noticed a some what slower data rate here since about the middle of November... I had rooted my phone and thought maybe i would get better connection with it being rooted and nothing changed... I havent called Sprint yet because I have been so busy, but maybe after the holidays I will call them and see whats going on.
per the rep i just talked to, tower down affecting (wouldn't say where it is) San antonio, and a handful of other south texas cities, brownsville, san B____ something. and a city in west texas.
said national 3g coverage is down, probably due to the winter storms, but i doubt any towers i receive coverage from have been affected.
I live in Mineral Wells, a small town about an hour west of Ft. Worth, and I haven't really noticed a significant drop. I don't have access to Wifi or 4G, freaking boondocks, all I have to base this on is my 3G service.
I just ran a test off of a server in Austin with the SpeedTest app, and got:
Download: 139.6 kB/s
Upload: 82.8 kB/s
Ping: 175 ms
What do y'all think, good numbers?
Yea thats San Benito, I grew up there. Its been kinda slow recently here. but I dont notice. I am always on wifi when I get into the house.
Have been seeing the same thing here in NE San Antonio (IH 35 N & 1604) just tested again with 4G and got 3.55 mbs down & 0.85 mbs up. 3G 0.70mbs down & 0.26 mbs up. I have seen up in the 6.0 mbs when I first bought phone in October.
prosper (north of dallas) 3g sucks eggs. 4g is kinda spotty, but there.
I have wondered why service was lagging so bad. I have been driving around Dallas all day today trying to load maps and it has taken about 5 minutes per page over 3g. Can't get a decent 4g signal to stick and haven't been able to for the past month. I have noticed a major decline in signal strength/speed. I use mine mainly for the hotspot and it has definitely dropped in speed in the past month. I now get about 100 kbps if I am lucky. I hope they fix something soon.

There are updated radio's for the Evo and it helped get my speeds back up. I am in Richardson and both 3g and 4g had slowed to half. Now 3g is back to normal and 4g is close to what it was a few months back.

If you are not on the new 3.70 build number only flash the radio and wimax update to the latest. DO NOT UPDATE PRI IF YOUR NOT ON 3.70!!
Seems like Sprint finally fixed whatever was the problem this weekend. On Saturday, suddenly my phone was finally getting over 1000kbps on speedtest.net and seemingly working like it used to.

down the road in aubrey 3g is spotty at best... !!! although the home agent hack did help somewat but its still disappointing speeds not to mention with the entire north dfw metroplex exploding in population u would think they would have 4g blanketed by now but nope...
My girlfriend had to exchange her EVO 4G yesterday at an official Sprint service center, and she was told that a lot of the problems we are having around here is because they've been working on the towers to upgrade them to 4G. The guy said they were doing it 'quietly, not announcing anything yet'.
Hope he's telling the truth! So far the closest 4G to here is Richmond, VA. It will be nice to see if this phone actually does 4G, or if that's just what they've been telling me.
I think your GF was feed a load of ____!
Clearwire hasn't been expanding due to money problems and a spat with Sprint. WiMax also runs at 2.5ghz and it's separate from Sprint's CDMA network. Clearwire wouldn't need to touch Sprint's hardware to launch WiMax in any area.
Now if it were Sprint upgrading their base station with their Network Vision plan, that could cause outages since all new hardware is being installed. Still that wouldn't be it because Sprint has publicly stated they will not start those changes till the 2nd half of this year.
If you're lucky, it could be Sprint making the change to Network Vision, in your area, for testing. I doubt that's it though.

You should have better confirmation before you make a post declaring the 4G is coming Hampton Roads area. I've been getting that same line since I bought my EVO in June. And now since Clearwire is broke and they CEO just resigned, it doesn't look good for WiMax rollouts.
I got all hyped when I read the thead title. Come back when you have something official.
WAVY 10, our local news channel did some investigating in reference to the crappy sms and web service we have been dealing with. What they found was that Sprint network in our area can't handle the amount of new smart phone customers they have signed up with the evo and the epic. They are fixing the system and expect it to be back online correctly by April 1st. We will see!
They have been saying that forever too. Whenever there is a problem, give it a few weeks....then two months go by, and nothing.
4G is already in Hampton Roads. Downtown Norfolk has testing going on. It's not the greatest but it's something. I used it about a week ago while I was on Colley Ave. Coverage was in and out as I drove through downtown but it is working.
I too have been told, by a Sprint Rep in Norfolk at the JANAF shoppong center, that the network outages are caused by the area being upgraded to 4G and for support for more 4G phones. He told me that areas of Norfolk have 4G up unofficially for testing, and an announcment will be made in April.
I decided to test the 4G at a StarBucks near Colley and Princess Anne and it connected. The connection was spotty and Speedtest.net would not connect. The trajic part is as soon as I drove away from the Starbucks I lost the 4G connection and it told me disconnected but radio antenna still on. Its not like Richmond but its a step in the right direction.
We ahve it here in Raleigh and I enjoy it in the spots where it is available. Yeee Haaa, post #10, now I can actually post something usefull.

look at clear's coverage map.....it shows a section of norfolk and gloucester as having 4g coverage
I live in Norfolk near the airport. i have never gotten any 4g connection. This weekend, I drove all through downtown and still did not get any 4g connection despite the claims in other posts. I will say that my 3g service has been really crappy lately. so i contacted sprint and they told me 4 towers were being worked on and should be fixed by april 1. The agent told me that she was annotating my call in my record and will be giving me a discount on my next month's bill because of failed service. She couldnt say how much but anything is better than nothing Yall should call as well. I'm just saying!

This is true. Whenever I get off work and I'm stuck in traffic going westbound through the downtown tunnel, my Evo connects to 4G with full bars. The speed test results I saw were nothing special though. I only pulled 2.5Mbps down, but that's still better than my 3G speeds of around 200kbps....

It is true! It is true! There is 4g downtown Norfolk. I followed Tidewater drive... to Little creek... made a left on Grandby. I followed Granby to 27th then Colley. The second I hit Colley I had 4 bars at 4g. I pulled over at the Golden Nugget Chinese Restaurant and ran a couple of speed tests. The results 7m down 2mb up Wow! That is awesome comparing to Norfolk's typical 3g service ranging from 200k-700k! I had service from the original find of 9:30 PM to 9:45PM then the signal died. I am not sprint so have no explanation why it went away. I confirmed that it was not a wireless connection..it was in fact 4g. Sprint, when is it coming to the rest of Hampton Roads?
Have you tried to tether with wimax? if so what speeds do you get? The reason I ask is because while downtown i connected to 4g, turned on tethering, then connected with my ipad 2. i was getting crappy crappy speeds like 200k while on the phone i was getting 7mb simultaneously

Or you can look at Clearwire's coverage map. As of today on the Peninsula it shows Clearwire / Sprint 4G coverage in parts of Williamsburg, Gloucester, and Newport News. In SHR it looks like there's some coverage around downtown Norfolk and in Virginia Beach (around Town Center and Oceana).
