I live near San Jose and today I tested out the "trial" 4G network at the Cisco campus. I seemed to get a good signal but the results were disappointing - 1.5 Mbps downstream, 800 Kbps upstream.
Is anyone able to get better? Maybe the "trial" network at Cisco is just crappy??
Here in Atlanta I'm getting download speeds of about 3megs. I believe that they are capping the speeds. I have a 4g usb dongle and that is the same speed I get on it. Once upon a time I used to get anywhere from 6-11megs using the dongle and it now only gets 3megs (just like my phone). I know there is no signal strength issue because the tower is on the roof of the building and I get a very good signal.
Anyone else experiencing this?
I got 2.2mbps, but no 4g. I was thinking it was 4g, but I shut the 4g button down and it's never said 4g and I still get 2.2mbps down and .32mbps up. I'm in Pasadena. I'm not sure what to make of that.
I'm in a 4g coverage area and still cant get it to connect to 4g unless im at sprint or bestbuy... and even then 3g is still faster...
Nothing against anybody, but I would kill for 3G where I live, let alone crappy 4G.

In the roswell/alpharetta area and I am getting about 4.7mbs works pretty well. Sprint tv needs improvement though otherwise very happy with new phone. Seems snappier than incredible phone I have too.
I'm in Dallas and I"m loving my 4.5ish download and 1.3 upload, you heard right. 1.3 upload.

I'm getting 1 bar or less of 4g service at my house.. I live in tacoma wa. The 4g coverage map shows that I should have about the best service speed.. I just have to stand outside and down the block to get it. so much for pitching Comcast.

I am currently north of Dallas and I get zero bars of 4G, though sometimes I see one bar light up. So far the most I have seen in a speed test is 1.6 mbps down and 223 kbps up.
I will test again when I am actually in the City of Dallas and see if it improves. Web is still quicker than any other phone I have owned.
in san antonio tx i get about 1.8 down and 1.5 up lol.... and before the launch a friend used to get from 10-11 megs on his wireless card... i think since the phone is new the network is congested with ppl doing speed tests and downloading apps

I've tried running the speed test in the Roswell, Sandy Springs, Smyrna, Airport area, and McDonough and I still keep getting the same speeds nothing higher than 3.3 down. I consistently seem to get anywhere from 2.7-3.0

I'm in Houston, TX so we have 4G coverage with ClearWire. I got my EVO yesterday, along with everybody else. I went to Best Buy to look at some accessories, while I was there I was chatting with the ClearWire rep running the demo and trying to sign up new customers. He was inside with store with his Clearwire USB dongle and laptop. We decided to run some speed comparisons, so I downloaded 2 speedtest apps from the Android market, one of them being for Speedtest.net. The best speed I got on my EVO with 4G enabled (and 1 bar of 4g) was about 2.25 Mbit down, and 1.1 Mbit up. I ran this test multiple times with me standing next to him, then putting my EVO next to the USB dongle to make sure I was getting the same signal. The rep's laptop, again running the speedtest from Speedtest.net and us using the the SAME servers, he got at least 6 Mbit down and almost 2 Mbit up. The best he got that I saw was like 7.2 Mbit down. He said that earlier that day he got as high as 10 Mbit down.
This is just telling me that it's either the processor that is limiting the speed, or it's the 4G antenna in the EVO. I saw that his 4G signal was pretty good being a bit outside the city, in Katy at Fry Road and I-10. I live just outside downtown I do get 4G inside my home, but again 1 or 2 bars. With my limited investigation I'm going to have to conclude that the network speed is NOT ClearWire's fault, but more like a hardware limitation on the EVO. If someone modded the phone with a better antenna the speed might improve.
About the existing 3G speed and with EVO is WOW! 3G response is soooo much faster on the EVO that it was on my G1. Another comparison is my home AT&T U-verse: I get 5.71 Mbit down and 0.94 Mbit up. I'm trying to think of a way that I can get my TV another way and get ClearWire for home instead of U-verse.
I dont think clear caps their 4G at all. See if you can connect to clear's 4G from your phone.
I get 2.5-3.5mb down and 800-1.3mb up. Still better than my dsl.
1.33 mpbs is the most I've gotten with 4G enabled. I am going to try again when I get home and see if the speed improves.
Anyone out there in the LA area getting 4g? I don't get 4g at all. My 3g is really fast, but no 4g shows. It just shows "scanning" in the settings.

****, I'm in Portland, one of the first WiMax areas, and I'm only getting 300/k down and 800/k up as I speedtest it now.
No big to me. I have wifi at home that pegs 5/5ish and at work about the same. I usually keep the 3g/4g off unless I am out and need it. Battery suckin' pig that stuff.

Anyone having a difficult time staying connected to 4G in Houston? From my experience so far, all 3 locations I have tried it out... (BB, Work, Home) are all in "In-Building" 4G coverage area. NONE of them can connect "In-Building". If I walk outside, it will connect then drop sporadically, or not connect at all. 3G has connectivity issues as well, but I want to focus on the big selling point of 4G here.
Any other experiences to speak of?

I have the same experience in the Memorial City (I-10 BW8 W) and East Katy (Fry) area. I'm happy with the 3g speed for what I use the phone for and have only turned on 4g for testing.
Im guessing it might be an issue with both signals from the towers and radio on the EVO. I have called Sprint to express my disappointment with the 4G service. I hope that HTC will make some magic happen with software upgrades. I also have tried the newer radio upgrade but still have issues once im inside of buildings.
just like when the iphone came out there were problems the same is happening now. i was getting good speeds up until a few hours ago here in NJ. my phone says 3G but im getting edge speeds

I am in St. Louis, and although 4G isn't official here yet (last I heard was 6/21) I am seeing the same thing. Indoors, it is almost a crap shoot.
Outside, it will get one "bar" of 4G... sometimes. Never really solidly locks on 4G.
I think it is an issue with the EVO radio firmware, at least I hope so, because I have the luxury of testing it side-by-side with an Overdrive, and I can consistently maintain a 4G signal of 2-3 bars on the Overdrive, if I put it in the window of my office.
Sadly, the Overdrive is seriously outperforming the reception of the Evo in my experiences so far.

More likely clear is capping us to maintain QoS for direct customers.

Hmm, I'm inside my house on Katy "Fry Rd. @ I10" and have 2 bars. Walk outside the front door no change. Typically outside around the Katy area I get about 2-3 bars.

Just a little upset for the reason being that Sprint would state that their 4G is 10x faster than EVDO. Taking the lower results of EVDO(600Kbps) and comparing it to the higher 4G(6Mbps). I have yet to see 3Mbps downstream on their 4G network in Houston. I have tested Clear's and Sprint's usb side by side and ofcourse it's only capped on Sprint. So on that point its not the same.

I can see that, but even 3G on this phone seems way faster than other phones. I'm sure it has to do with the CPU beign able to render pages much quicker than previous devices.
That said, my 4G speeds are averaging about twice as fast as 3G
Drove down 45 from the medical center to Spring yesterday and got 4G all the way. As far as the downspeed goes, I agree, it's probably QoS since Sprint's 4G network is still in its infant stage.

Thanks for this info, I think you are right, something is capping our throughput. I hope Sprint come out with new firmware patch to resolve this. I am not happy with my less than 2Mbit download speed on 4G!
Well, I wish I was seeing the same coverage as everyone else. I can't get 4G inside at all. I got all the updates last week, but see there is yet another PRL update I was unaware of. *Finders crossed.
I don't think wimax will ever have good indoor coverage. The frequency it runs at is much too high.

Since I work for Clear, I can tell ya'll that we do not cap anything. Also, as far as Sprint goes, they just use and resell our service. I will, however, be willing to be that there may be something with the device that maybe a firmware upgrade may fix but honestly who knows.
I have yet to see anyone get above 4mbs on the Evo...I think it has something to do with the device.

I was holding a HTC Incredible in one hand and my Nexus One in the other. Full bars on mine and only 2 bars on the Incredible. Site after site, the Incredible loaded faster. Ran SpeedTest on each and the Incredible did better each time.
I didn't think my N1 was slow by any means, but the Incredible was really quick in loading sites and general navigation.
My SpeedTests for my area never get above 1mbps down.
I can't wait. Given, I get plenty speed in my area (around 5MB up), 10 wouldn't hurt!

Henderson, South East. I was getting over 4mb down every time, and I still get 1.3mb up no matter what.. it got faster on FroYo builds.
CM6 I dropped down to like 2.5 Mb/s and the same 1.3 Mb up. but a little tweaking got me back to about where I was.
xguntherc what were the tweaks.
P.s. there won't be a huge speed increase mainly because there are few HSPA+ devices out there to take full advantage of this.
i would much rather see tmobile get better coverage before 10mbps speeds.
Nice.. I was up the mall the other day and asked the t-mobile people when can we expect faster speeds and she said they told her by end of 2010 beginning of 2011. I thought she was full of SH*T since we just got 3g a few months ago but it's listed as "Coming soon" on the coverage map. I can't wait..
Dang, you guys are lucky. Im in North Las Vegas and my 3G goes back and forth but luckly i use wifi in my home. When im near the strip i get good speeds though. I hope they expand just alittle bit north though.

Amen. I'm so sick of losing all data connection when I walk in a store. I enjoy tmobiles speed as is I just wish it would work regularly. And forget a road trip or any coverage between cities. Seems the main places I need a data connection are the places t-mobile doesn't cover. I don't need it around my house, I need it in stores and on the road. Off topic but I'm also waiting for google maps to be available offline that'd ease my concern a bit

Im in NYC and by all means should have it. I never get past 2mb in manhattan and easily drop to 2g in the boroughs.
You evidently have to be underneath a tower with a sattelite dish to get it here.

So today I was trying to kill my battery after wiping all data to rebuild the battery stats and randomly turned on 4G to help kill the battery, but found that it connected to Clearwire, rather than Sprint. Now I will have to drive around and try and locate the broadcast point.
I live in Wolcott, CT and small town in New Haven County that boarders Hartford County, next to Waterbury. This was a fluke that I turned on 4G but was surprised to see that it connected.
My speeds are crap but have gotten it up to 6mbps down, nothing better than 3G upload speeds though ~0.33mbps up.
Here are some pictures to show.
I live in stamford, no luck with 4g here.

I thought Sprint used Clearwire's WiMax network. (i.e. Sprint 4G is really a rebranded Clearwire WiMax) Not to mention Sprint owns the majority interest in Clearwire.
In Orange County California I came across a small pocket of 4G coverage. The weak signal only allowed about 1.65 Mbs down and 0.48 up which is far below the 4G spec but better than the usual 3G (altho also below the 3G spec).

Clearwire is Sprint's 4G provider. I have just never seen Clearwire listed as the ISP while in labeled 4G areas thats all...
What I find funny is Clearwire does not list any active broadcast location in CT, so I wonder why I am picking anything up...
A quick google finds that Clearwire is hiring in the Hartford, CT area. Everyone from customer support to RF Engineers. Perhaps you were close to their Hartford location.
last time I was in hartford (at the club lol) I got like 3-4 bars of 4G, it was AWESOME! That's the only place I've ever had 4g, since I live in the springfield area (I wouldn't give my city, that's just stupid. Even though I use my real name as my username and you could easily find me via google. lol)
anyways I was getting like 8mbps down and 2-3mbps up

Hartford is about 20-25 miles away from Wolcott, but I have noticed that they were hiring here.

I'm really not that worried, user name is my real name, and if you or anyone else really feels the need to come visit me have at it... Nothing a quick search on the internet wouldn't pull up anyways.
Im in manchester, I tracked down the tower...right in back of the sprint store...got nearly 12mbit on mobile speed test...at my house 1.5 miles away I couldn't even get a signal. I think its in low-power test mode. The signal drops like a rock as you drive away...what's wimax range? I thought it was many many miles, 20 to 30 if you still had a good line of sight....?

I will track down the broadcast point. There are a couple large cell towers in my area that I will start with.
I found the broadcast point, it was were I thought it would be, top of route 69. Was getting almost 11mbps down and around 1.5mbps up. Kind of weird that there is 4G in this area now.
I had 1 bar in new haven not to long ago and got a little over 4 mbps down and about 1 mbps up.
4G Waterbury CT
Hello everyone. Found this post searching around and figured I would join this great forum.
I found out earlier today that 4g service was started up in Waterbury. I saw that the OP is in wolcott. Flip on ur 4G and give it a minute to set up.
With speedtest.net Im getting an average of 9.25 down and 1.75 up.
The internet flies on this phone at those speeds. Web pages load in a second or so compared to 10 secs on 3g.
Finally we get our 10 bucks out of the deal, lol.
4g is all over newhaven and hartford
It's also available in stamford, ct - there is a tower on the TOP of the new Trump building.
Just google "4g stamford" or "4g your town here"
download the sensorly app on your phone and you can see real time reports of it down to road level.

That sensorly map seems to be inaccurate for me at my current location, it says I should have 4g coverage but I do not. Back at home in seattle though I do have 4g almost everywhere so I am used to having it.
Edit: I stand corrected by the fact that if you download the app and zoom in really close (better then you can on the website) it shows I do not have coverage.

I get 4G throughout E.Hartford and Manchester. None in Glastonbury though. I get 5-8 Down in E.Ha.
There are pockets of 4g in Rocky Hill & Newington. Conveniently, the Newington Sprint Store has 4g coverage ;-)
So watching this video inspired me to do a little real-world field testing.
I just got out of the Verizon store by Grand Central in NYC.
This is disappointing, because I was pricing out the Thunderbolt all day and almost signed up.
Side to side, Sprint beat Verizon at least 75% of the time. It was always 2-4MBps faster on the download (~8MBps vs ~4MBps or so). The other 25% of the time that Verizon was faster it was about 1MBps or less.
I checked coverage maps before I did this and Verizon has full dark red 4G coverage all over NYC, so it should be as fast as it can get. And I can't imagine there's a lot of congestion on their network the day after the phone came out.
Sprint on the other hand has only light green coverage (not dark green "best") in that area. Again, I was inside the store so LTE should have had the edge.
The latencies were comparable, both around 110ms. The only part that blew me away was Verizon's upload speed, about 38MBps compared to Sprint's 1MBps. But as we all know download is more important than upload.
Sorry to say, but LTE isn't all that it's cracked up to be, at least when and where I checked it for myself. Surprisingly, Sprint seems to hold the crown for 4G speeds at the moment.
The problem is as always talked about - the fact that WiMAX kills battery and i assume LTE does the same. They need to come up with a way to have these great - high speed options with better battery life or its relatively useless.
I think the problem with wimax is penetration, because I was at the park today in Philadelphia Pa(Center City). and I reached speeds of 8.04 Mbps but when I am at home (South Philadelphia)...I barely get 1.5Mbps...
OPPOSITE here in Chicago. Both had strong signals
Evo got hammered by the T-Bolt repeatedly on site downloads and speedyest apps. Not even close. ONE time in 15 minutes of test Evo beat TBolt and that's because I didn't hit the Url cleanly!
LTE Verizon + TBolt is fastest mobile phone experience to date. By a mile.
Sprint Wimax is a crock.

Sorry to say, but LTE isn't all that it's cracked up to be, at least when and where I checked it for myself. Surprisingly, Sprint seems to hold the crown for 4G speeds at the moment.

Evo got hammered by the T-Bolt repeatedly on site downloads and speedyest apps. Not even close. ONE time in 15 minutes of test Evo beat TBolt and that's because I didn't hit the Url cleanly!
LTE Verizon + TBolt is fastest mobile phone experience to date. By a mile.

You didn't get that high of an upload speed. I know your phone says you did, but you didn't. Google it.

Yay for WiMax, if I paid attention to my networking class correctly, WiMax will be expanding for faster up and download speeds in the next year or so.

I was planning on the same thing today until I ran the tests side by side.
I only get a download speed of about 2.5 MBps and upload of about 1.7 MBps in St. Louis.
And it kicks me off the 4G every 2-3 minutes. My 3G speeds are literally in the 100-200 KB/s range.
It's the most pathetic thing I've ever experienced. Can't believe I've got one of the best phones on the market with speeds as terrible as these.
I tried to download a beer drinking app the other day from my car and it took a good 10 minutes to download.
EDIT: The St. Louis, MO server is 25.80 miles away. My last test just got 107 KB/s download speed. I wish I were exaggerating.

go to engadget and read their review on the Thunderbolt. They have a report from speedtest.net saying their app doesn't accurately test the upload speed of the phone. An update will be out shortly to fix the issue. I would assume other speed test sites are the same. The phone hooked up to a PC via hotspot produces much slower uploads than the "38" your phone told you it does cause it is tested correctly. All of that info is found in engadgets post.

I just got out of the Verizon store by Grand Central in NYC.
This is disappointing, because I was pricing out the Thunderbolt all day and almost signed up.
Side to side, Sprint beat Verizon at least 75% of the time. It was always 2-4MBps faster on the download (~8MBps vs ~4MBps or so). The other 25% of the time that Verizon was faster it was about 1MBps or less.
I checked coverage maps before I did this and Verizon has full dark red 4G coverage all over NYC, so it should be as fast as it can get. And I can't imagine there's a lot of congestion on their network the day after the phone came out.
Sprint on the other hand has only light green coverage (not dark green "best") in that area. Again, I was inside the store so LTE should have had the edge.

HAHA thats funny, i was at the same verizon store last week and i had the same results as well.
The things that will condemn Sprint's 4G in competition against Verizon's LTE have more to do with external factors than the technologies themselves.
Here in Houston is a perfect example. This was a debut WiMAX network, but has been largely abandoned (along with a ton of other cities) by Clear in favor of spending on new-market rollouts in places like Hemet, CA (I suppose the buffalo and trailer parks needed 10Mbps down on the go) and building worthless retail locations. The Sprint 4G map shows dead spots at a great many busy intersections here in town, and the Clear map shows no planned expansion to remedy the issue. Even Clear's current developmental floundering is set to come to a grinding halt as Clear runs out of debt capacity. Sprint can't/won't come riding to the rescue for two reasons: (1) Sprint shot its load on the network modernization project in December; (2) Sprint and Clear already had a falling out over the last few billion Clear wasted on retail locations instead of service and coverage upgrades. WiMAX coverage in most locations is unreliable and spotty (Try watching ESPN on Sprint TV next time you are on a highway as a passenger for more than 2 straight minutes) and that will almost assuredly not improve.
The bottom line is that Sprint and Clear have neither means nor unity of purpose required to deliver a solid, reliable nationwide 4G network. Verizon has deep pockets and only 1 management chain to control. Unless Sprint's modernization project is going to be truly revolutionary in what it delivers to the entire Sprint coverage footprint, Sprint's 4G just can't compete long-term against the Verizon money machine. I can already see the Verizon guy walking around with a Thunderbolt everywhere going "Is it streaming in HD now? ... Good." Verizon can and will deliver more dense and reliable 4G coverage than Sprint in the next couple of years.
I'm in Houston and I have a Thunderbolt for test purposes. Speedtests show download speeds of 18-40mb/s consistently, and I've also hit 50 mb/s occasionally. Upload speeds have been proven incorrect on the speedtest app, but when I go to the speedtest website and test uploads are showing 3-4mb/s.
Sprint Wimax doesn't work at my house so I leave it off most of the time. When it does work I normally get 3-5mb/s.
Clear is broke and i don't expect them to do much building out until they find an investor, but I don't see that happening. Tmobile was rumored to have some interest because they needed spectrum, but now with the AT&T deal this isn't gonna happen.
Sprint has signed a deal with Lightsquared and I expect to see LTE sooner rather than later. Lightsquared is backed by a private equity firm (it means they have money). Their goal is to build out a nationwide LTE network and be a wholesaler (unlike Clear who wanted so badly to have a successful retail operation). Sprint is a partner, and Cricket has also signed a deal with them. Sprint's deal with Lightsquared will also allow them to put their equipment on Sprint's towers so this well help with the build out. Previously Sprint wanted Clear to do the same and help coordinate the build out, but Clear refused and wanted to do their own thing. Lightsquared has spectrum I believe in the 1600mhz frequencies so penetration won't be an issue like 2500mhz wimax.
Check out Lightsquared's website for more info. They expect to have some consumer products available the 2nd half of 2011, and they say smartphones from partners in 2012. Everything I've posted I pieced together reading about Sprint and Lightsquared, but I think this makes a lot of sense.
