How to remove Sense UI / Rosie

Extracted/modified from MoDaCo's Rosie Removal Update.zip found here. A Nandroid backup is recommended beforehand.
NOTE: This only removes the modified homescreen and widgets. The HTC dialer, and other HTC modifications are untouched.

If people are removing Sense, what are they using for a dialer afterwards, since the Hero doesn't ship the standard Android dialer?

If I remember correctly, and I may not be, the dialer is a separate app that is not part of the rosie package.

This. The HTC Dialer is unaffected by the above script (which is good, because it's one of the things I think HTC improved on )

Isn't the sence UI the big feature and why everyone wanted the Hero in the first place. If you are going to get rid of it all together, whey not just get the Moment with the 800 Mhz proc. I may be missing something here but just don't get why people don't want it.

Not that it matters, as this thread wasn't posted to discuss the merits of Sense but instead its method of removal, however, I purchased the Hero because it was the first Android device on my network (Sprint). I also have no interest in the Moment as I have no interest in the bulk of a hardware keyboard.
I've had multiple HTC devices on other platforms and after a few months I always end up disabling their "customizations" (touchflo 3d).
In addition to that, according to HTC's twitter post we have Sense UI to thank for a delayed Android 2.0 update for our phones. There is no excuse for that in my opinion, update the drivers for 2.0 and be done with it. Release the Sense UI update later if it's going to take so long. Not to mention the fact that 1.6 is being completely bypassed.

The Hero doesn't ship the standard Android Dialer app. You remove Rosie. So now you have stock Android. How do you place a call again? Through the People app?

I would imagine that way or by using the dedicated phone button

Removing Rosie does not give you stock Android (I WANT stock Android, and tried!). All it does is get rid of the HTC-customized homescreen. Separately, the HTC widgets can be removed. Even then, you still have other HTC-customized apps like the dialer, contacts, Peep, etc. left over. Now, I suppose someone could remove those apps, too, but I don't think anyone would remove the dialer.
Even doing all of that, you STILL won't have vanilla Android. The top taskbar will remain black, the notification icons are all HTC-customized, etc. Without a custom ROM that will install vanilla Android, there is no way (yet) to get all of the HTC stuff off this phone.

Is it the sense ROM that causes the bugs in the phone? SMS battery drain, BT core dumps etc?
thats enough for me to want it gone.
Too bad the phone was manufactured with a stupid class 2 card reader. this is HTC trying to dump overstock I guess.

Link, please? The phone ships with a class 2 *card* in it, hardly surprising, they're the most common.

Well, in the sense that HTC either modified the stock Messaging app, or wrote their own, I guess Sense is responsible for the wake-lock.
I can't answer for the core dumps. I've been waiting for my phone to throw one so I could grab the file and find out what process is actually dumping. Not that I could do anything about it, but more information is always better. What really bugs me is why does Android even *create* core dumps? Is that an HTC-ism, or did Google forget to disable them?
And if they're enabled on-purpose, why doesn't the phone clean them up on a restart?

man the hero is odd, you would think removing all that stuff manually would free up some internal space but no. faster though

There is an icon for "Phone" in the apps list. You may not be able to see it through Rosie (kinda like a rootkit, they just hide it from you since it's not necessary). Or, you can just press the green talk button and it opens the dialer as well.
I removed Rosie and my phone is super fast all the time.

once u unninstall sense, how do you get it back on, just re-install whatever rom ur using?

I don't think you have to have root to disable Sense UI. See this guide.

im sorry, i would like it completely off my phone, if you disable it it will open up in the background and suck up like 15-25 mb of ram, and even with a taskiller it always opens back up

i want to remove some heavy stuff from a rom... can i?

i am using danger's 2.1 v1
i want to remove:
all of sense
anything that has to do with phone.apk or cellphone usage
anything that has to do with sms/mms
basically i just want to strip it to barebones. i dont use telephone on this handset (i use sipdroid/sipsorcery/google voice so i only make my calls over edge/3g/wifi) and i only use google voice for sms
i need the edge/3g functionality to use google voice/sipdroid. i want to keep my phone book/contacts. everything else can go.
my dream/plan here is to have a completely stripped OS, no frills, no phone framework or anything, but i still need to be authenticated on the network.
can any dev pm me and let me know what you think about this?

I've been thinking about this today also, since I got sipdroid/sipsorcery/sipgate set up last night... basically it would be nice if the phone radio would stop polling the tower for calls. I'm not getting any calls, so why poll the tower for voice calls?
I will be watching this develop...

exactly what im thinking. also, why have the phone and sms/mms programs in memory at all? im really excited to try this, ive been dissecting roms and trying to load them but even when i sign them i just get update script not found when i try to load

well if you get something cooked up I will help test it...

Assuming you know how to use ADB, you could probably fire up a shell, pull all the apps (backup!!!), then go about deleting things such as dialer, and so forth.

I would recommend you start with:
rm anvil.dex
rm anvil.apk
rm grandpiano.dex
rm grandpiano.apk
rm tengoldingots.dex
rm tengoldingots.apk
Seriously though this is a very interesting idea. I am way to green to help with something like this but would love to know if you could pull it off, sounds like you would have the fastest phone on the block..

Revert messaging apk to previous version?

I recently made the switch to Gingerbread. However, I actually miss the default messaging and e-mail apps from Froyo. I've found a system dump of 2.2. I've tried pushing the messaging.apk and BlurEmail.apk (which I renamed to blur_email.apk to match the naming convention of Gingerbread) to system/app but I still have the new look. Any other suggestions? Just to be clear, this is what I've done:

If the code above isn't working, then will using Root Explorer work? I'm am pretty sure I'm correct about what APK to pull for SMS (messaging.apk) but I'm not 100% sure which APK for e-mail (BlurEmail.apk or blur_email.apk)?
I've actually since gone back to Froyo, but I'd prefer to move on up to Gingerbread and stay up to date.

I agree. Froyo's messaging app is way better, you can scroll through the messages without hitting the 'more' button. It just works better.

It isn't so much the functionality of the Froyo messaging app.. It's the design. Moto's Gingerbread update really changed the design of the default messaging app. I like the simplistic, dark design of the Froyo version.
Also, before anyone suggests I switch to Handcent, Chomp, Go SMS, etc.. I have tried them all! I actually have Go SMS installed, but I still prefer the default messaging app's layout to Go SMS's most simple, dark theme.

I'm a bit embarrassed to admit this, but as it turns out the messaging app that I'm so in love with is stock ANDROID, not Motorola's stock Froyo. I have been running Rubix for a while, which has the stock Android messaging app, not the Motorola one.. Before I switched to Rubix, I had used alternate messaging apps (Go SMS, Chomp, etc).. Clearly it's been a while since I've seen Motorola's stock Froyo messaging app.
Sorry for the confusion!
On the bright side, at least I know if I find a Blurless Gingerbread rom I'll be happy.

Remove "Call Settings"

I removed phone.apk and telephonyprovider.apk... How can I remove call settings from settings.apk?

Why do you want to do this? I know the Nook isn't a phone but some applications end up querying for call settings anyway and you are likely to cause problems.
There can also be areas where you may want to fake things like the Nook having a phone number as some apps use that as a verification key (e.g. Verizon Fios remote control).

I did this because I didn't want the phone icons or anything. When I go to the "call settings", in the settings app, it crashes. So naturally, its of no use to me. I don't use any apps that use a phone # as a key, I just want it gone.

Asking people why they want to do something is another question. Start your own thread and ask why someone would want to do that.
You would need a new settings app to remove the call settings. I also deleted all the telephony apps from my nook. No problems at all.

Just an fyi... Those are included in our encore/nc builds for compatibility reasons. Not just some apps, but market also needs these to run well. Other things like contacts app will act odd, too. You will find more headaches from removing them. Our cm Devs didn't leave them in there for S and Gs.
If your concern is battery, don't worry. They don't use any.

Get Titanium Backup on the market. This will let you see all installed apps and have the option to "freeze" one before uninstalling. You'll get to see how the nook functions without the app in question. If it freaks out, you can usually just go back in and unfreeze it.
The phone apk is definitely not a safe app to remove are you using the stock adw launcher?

Well... I dunno about that. I really see no reason for the dev's to leave in Camera.apk, MMS.apk, etc etc... I've removed the following, plus more with no negative side effects whatsoever. I've been running CM7 & CM7.1 since I first got my nook last May. I've even tried removing these on my phone just for "S&G's" and it didn't really have any negative side effects aside from my phone no longer functioning as a phone
Partial list of stock system apks removed:
Phone.apk - crashes at first, but a reboot solves any and all issues with that
MMS.apk
MMSProvider.apk
Telephonyprovider.apk
Protips.apk
Camera.apk

[RC]Fbook: Full sync working - will have pics up later tonight!

I will be uploading my rom very shortly. I believe this is the right section, I am not a dev yet....but the devs have said that ICS can't synch facebook from what I have heard and that it requires Haxsynch to work.
I don't have my contacts setup perfectly at the moment so I haven't got it to synch contacts properply, but so far it has synched something, it has synched all Calendar from facebook and messages and it is opperating the facebook interface within Android like on any other samsung phone
Can someone tell me a decent screen capture app for SGS running Ice Cream Sandwich 4.0.3 RC 3.0?
I also have all SNS accounts work, Twitter, Alternate email and even Server
Will be testing and adding up results soon. It's late here in Australia and I am preparing my ROM of ICS to be ready for Uploading here.

just a quick add to bump this cause I know I am very close now. Has anyone been able to get this to work? I have actually got full facebook profiles showing up in my contacts list along with all the details, phone numbers emails etc, the last thing remaining is the picture? anyone further ahead than this?

Facebook sync is working. Didn't realise that I had it going all along? All that was wrong was the permissions on the init.d script? You would think that the "fix permissions" command would actually work however it does not. I used Android Commander to change it cause it was blatantly obvious that it was wrong when the file icon looks different. Will have to give big thanks to the dev of android commander just for this alone

Are you serious? I think I pulled those links to my first revision of the ROM. I havent even uploaded the fix for the sync issues yet lol. But I did do a complete pull of my system (systemdump) cause I had ran out of space….somehow removing apps didn't allow for more room? I would pull an app and couldn't put it back. I even pulled like 6 apps and then still couldn't put back the framework, so rather than reboot I just did a system dump and then dragged the 20mb of .so files that I added to try get facebook sync and several other things working and sure enough FB syn stopped working, but allowed me to put my framework back and get my phone online again. That being said I added back what .so files could have been needed and still no sync? Hmmm that means there is an .so file that I bet no one has even considered being necessary and it IT IS!
I now have to play a game of trial and error till I find out which one it is. I am contemplating restoring my system before system dump and then pulling a whole **** tin of apps that I would normally like or need and then keeping sync and then one by one pull files from libs directory until FB sync stops working. Then re-add all the apps I want back up to stock. That will give me a clean ROM to work with.
