Overclocking and still only getting 540 - EVO 4G General

I apologize if something like this has already been posted. Fel free to just point me to another thread. I have rooted my phone and installed the overclock widget. I also installed quadrant and ran the benchmark, but even with overclocking, I am only seeing a result around 540. Any ideas?

did you flash a kernel that allows for overclocking? Just installing the overclock widget isn't going to allow your phone to overclock. You need a kernel with the instructions added. There are some in the development forum, but it looks as of right now they break the cameras and perhaps the Wifi.

You know what? You're right and I knew that a few hours ago, and forgot between then and now. Thank you.

I got around 1270 on mine without an overclock.... but I am using FroYo ;p

[Poll] Phone Overclocking

So, as the title says this is a poll about phone over clocking.
Who's phone is capable of overclocking and who's isn't?
My goal is to find out if there is a way to tell if you can overclock or not based on the phones s/n.
Procedure:
So pick the proper answer on the poll, then if you could please make a post saying whether you can or cannot overclock along with your s/n.
Works
S/N=HTO2SHF05245 B
Doesn't
HT03GHF05302 JV002-00 D
mine does 768..without a hitch.. and doesnt get hot either..will post the sn when i can check my phone.
Example post/my results
I cannot and my serial number is HT03GHF05302 JV002-00 D.
my hero can, yes
I tried several methods of OCing, and finally found one that works for me on another site. I'll PM it to you since I don't know what the rules are on posting links to other sites here.
In short, yes I can, but only using a certain method.

Can you PM me? I'd like to hear about it.
been oc since Toast released his kernel, but I do still get the random fc on incoming calls once or so a week. its annoying but if the call was important they leave a message. The difference in speed is worth it.
OC to 768 with no issues.

D3fault sent me the link and now I can OC up to 710 (768 freezes me). Before he sent me the zip file for the OC stuff I could not run any OC ROM's, no overclock widget, or setcpu. Now I can run overclock widget (LWP flies now) and setcpu. Still can't get all OC'd ROM's to load but it is worlds better than it was.
Lastly, I do get some heat though, oh well.
Here is the link for those who can't get their hero to overclock, try this (courtesy of D3fault, not me). Download and add to your SD, flash, download overclocking program of choice (I really like the OC widget in the market) and done.

I can over clock, have been overclocked and remained on for over a day now. Battery temperature is 24.7 and thats under constant texting and web-browsing throughout the day. Ive downloaded a couple apps as well.

Ummm, why do you want my S/N #??? My hero is oc'ed an loving it.. depending on what rom i use that day..some get hot, some FC some things...but a few are flawless fer me with a lil tweek here an there
Overclocked to 710 (too squemish to get the higher kernel) and though it sucks through battery like no tomorrow, and the fact that... well.. it didn't speed any lag in the os itself, games and graphics work a hell of a lot quicker!
ROM - Bittersweet v1.2/stock radio/using DialerOne/LauncherPro
Kernel - Toast-godmode OC .29 kernel for DamageControl/based roms
Neocore:
1.5 - 12fps
2.1 - 24/28fps
w/oc kernel - 30/32.8fps
@lokipipin, the OC wants to find if there is a correlation of phones serial number differences to the freq. of people who can't overclock (i.e. it could be a revision, or even a ****ty batch of pcbs or something, and that could be tracked by s/n)

Well, there's not much i can do with your serial number that will harm you, so don't worry. But i'm looking to find a correlation between serial numbers and chip revisions, which would in turn let us know based on serial number if you can OC and etc.
We did this with the PS3 world a long time ago and it was pretty helpful, i'm surprised no one did it sooner.
And only based off the two that i have already, i can say that maybe the D batch was manufactured with lower quality chips. But that's only based off of two results, just imagine if i had more to compare.

Wish I could tell you. All I know is that once I flashed it, I was able to use the OC widget. Prior to the flash it wouldn't work. I am a noob, sorry.

I can overclock the phone but cannot overclock to 768. Only 710 and staying stable.
Edited my S/N missed a character at the end.

Obviously the actual credit for that goes to person who posted it over at Android Central, beezy420. It's worked for me and several others so it's worth a shot if nothing else works for you.
I flashed it to my rooted stock 2.1 and it worked, so give it a shot.
yes my hero is OC'ed with 710
So far I have only tried to OC my Hero once. I did it with Zen's MT3G ROM and it worked, but it definitely created some heat. I think with that one it was OC'd at something like 691. Like I said, phone worked, but it DEFINITELY heated up a LOT more than normal. I can't easily access my s/n right now, so I'll have to update this post when I can.
I can OC to 787 or higher. Been running OC since day one of toast first release 1-2months ago. I have made a few kernels for myself with 787 and once with one a step higher, all booted fine with no reboots.

Over Clocking the Eris..anyone else seem to get stuck at 246mhz

Since I rooted my phone yesterday, I decided to try an overclocker. I was saddened to see that it never registered mine as overclocking. I am using the Over Clock Widget. My processor runns at 528 and no higher, even when I select 585 or 600. Not a huge deal after I saw what was happening.
When it runs at 528 it runs nice and smooth and after 60 seconds, even while using, it drops to 480. When my screen goes off and then I use my phone again the processor is at 246 and won't adjust back up unless I reset it in the Over Clock Widget.
My question is, do you think this is an error with the Over Clock Widget or a phone issue. The visual performance lag I get existed before the app install and even before I rooted it, because I ran the linpack for android and got 0.807 for my MFLOPS. Then I ran it when it was showing 528, I got a 2.294 MFLOPS. Has anyone else seen this behavior. I always thought it was memory issue with the phone and have always used a task killer to clear up memory and performance was better, but now that I see what seems to be going on with the processor, I don't think it was memory now. When I reset it to 528 this phone runs smooth but as soon as it clocks down, back to lag and slow response.
Is there another app that would be setting my processor down that I'm not aware of? My next step is to wipe and reset the phone and run the linpack test and see what happens. I wanted to get thoughts before i do this though. Sorry this is so long.

I read alot! This is my first time trying to overclock so before purchasing a more than likely better over clocking app, I want to know if anyone else has seen this using other over clockers. I have read many people over clockign the Eris getting speeds of around 700mhz, but mine won't hit over 528 as mentioned.
The Original Eris Overclocking:THREAD HERE Didn't mention any of this if you might have been refering to that thread.
Was that menat to be helpfull. I searched all across XDA and found not notable information on this. I read what I could but nothing that mentions what I have described above. If you have a link that has some information on this issue, please post. Looking for some feedback though still.
During your overclocking search on xda, did you happen to come across the setCPU thread? The app that you have to pay for on the market that is free there for xda uers? Search setCPU.
Also, most roms are already oc'd @ 710 without any app at all to control it.

he's more than obviously running the stock 2.1 rooted with an oc widget!
relax, flame off boys.
if you want to overclock there are several roms that are set to overclock by default(easiest method)
or you could flash a new kernel if you want to stay stock(not so easy for a new guy method)
and then there is always the i want to know whats going on write my own kernel method(much less easy then any other method listed)
if you want the stock feel only with all the root perks try plain jane. and as for posting a new thread like this feel free to PM me at any time before putting yourself out on a limb for the boys to jump on you im glad to help anyone avoid catching the heat/ informing ANYBODY
Yep thanks for the response guys. I am running stock. Just freaked me out when I saw that ahppening. Thought I might have had a screwed up phone. I will PM next time Sj. Thanks..still reading though. SetCPU did bring up more than just using overclocking which pointed more towards kernel rewrites and custom roms.

Over Clock Kernel - wifi error

I am running CM6 A013 with oc-legend-cm-2.6.29.6 kernel. Everything seems to be working just fine except for the wifi. Has anyone gotten the wifi to work with the oc kernels?
I read in another thread that we could take the wlan.ko file from an old ROM. Does anyone have a copy of this file or would anyone be willing to pull the file so that I can test it? I really appreciate it.
same situation here. neither kernels work with cm6's wifi and hotspot. can someone fix this please! i really want my wifi back! i didnt do a backup before hand!
Im looking at this and it looks easier than just replacing the entire kernel like you guys did, read here from that guy's post above:
"How to do it for kernel_legend_13be9c9c:
At first, you should read zanfur's post and his patch.
I just modified two tables in acpuclock-arm11.c excluding his having written.
1. modify cpufreq.c to let SetCPU to access freq tables
2. modify acpuclock-arm11.c to let HTC Legend be able to overclocking
3. modify msm7227_defconfig to disable PERFLOCK [optional]
You might not need modify defconfig when you use SetCPU which can purchase in Android Market.
SetCPU can disable PERFLOCK by setting. ([menu] -> [Perflock Disabler])"

So, with that said, I would take that file or file(s) and replace them with the ones in our current kernel made for our phone... might work and your wifi won't be broken.
You guys are running a kernel made for a different device.
could some one say in plain english the exact steps to get the old kernel back? the one from CM6

That kernel is not built for our wifi chip. The kernel needs to be built for the BCM chipset and not the TI. Further, the wifi module needs to be in sync with the kernel build. Android 101.
I am not sure what we are going to gain from overclocking. There just doesn't seem to be any end goal, other than bragging rights on a benchmark where the Aria can only hope to be among the best of the mediocre CPUs. If it's for flash - forget it. We don't have the instruction set required in the CPU. The downside is the potential to add instability and confuse test results for mods that can actually increase functionality.
I like overclocking and running a couple benchmarks once in a while. For day to day use I'm more interested in downclocking but only if it can increase battery life.
Sent from my HTC Liberty using XDA App
the extra speed of the OC makes a big different on the games, that's the reason I like it... Games run smoother with the OC kernel.... do the test.. try to run Abduction with the stock Kernel for a while and then with the OC.. you'll see the difference... also Live Wallpapers with the stock kernel is choppy... it is smooth with the OC.
Hell my nexus one has been over clocked since the day I got it (rooted that same day ) not that a 1ghz phone really needs it. Well the Nexus One maybe for gaming but my Captivate and Vibrant on the other hand doesn't need it period. You won't get better performance gaming with any other android handset out there to date. Still my Captivate is over clocked to 1.2ghz lol. Like I say there's something fun about pushing the limits.
It really just another thing to tweak and play around with on your device. It's always fun to push the limits.
There are several reason why I would like to overclock. 1. The 3D photo gallery loads photos really slow with the stock kernel, but with an overclocked kernel the pics loaded very quickly. 2. It's nice to run a 3D game or two without chopping. Just to name a couple. It would be nice to have an Aria kernel that works with all of the phones hardware. And showing off benchmark number is nice as well.

[Q] Running Taboonay, have overclock questions

Tried posting this in the Taboonay thread, but it won't let me because I have less than 10 posts. Also tried searching, but didn't really find anything relevant, so I'll try asking here.
I just got my A500 last week. My first ROM attempt was Virtuous Galaxy, which was fun, but since it wasn't Acer stuff, some things didn't work, which I didn't like. Next, I tried Virtuous Picasso, which was great, but I could not get the cell service to stop sucking my battery.
Now I'm on Taboonay, and everything is going great so far. My question is about overclocking. With Virtuous Picasso, there were text files I could edit to set my overclock speeds. I don't see anything like that with Taboonay, or I just can't find the correct info. Is overclocking enabled by default on Taboonay? If so, how do I tweak the settings? Do I need to use something like SetCPU, or is there something built into Taboonay? Thanks in advance...

Running SetCPU, it says my min is 216, and my max is 1000. How do I overclock?
It has been a few weeks since i was running tabonay, but as i remember to overclock you needed to change the kernel. I used the richardtrip one shown in the first or second post.
Then setcpu will let you change the oc.
If you use setcpu or cpumaster(my favorite) delete the /etc/init.d folder and reboot. Then set the cpunsettings you want.

SetCPU no longer underclocking at low usage?

I have moved from CM7 to Hombase 5.4, and found that setcpu no longer seems to do anything. on CM7 it worked as i had hoped, underclocking the phone when i was doing low intensity stuff like texting, and pushing it up to full power for videos etc. now it does nothing but tell me core temps, which are always high as its always running at 1Ghz.
Can anyone explain how to get it back to underclocking?
Many Thanks
Try a different kernel.

This is a known issue with the OC faux kernel. I was running into the same problem with his enhanced stock kernel after using webtop. After reflashing the enhanced stock 0.2.0 it would still get stuck at max 1Ghz after using webtop, but a reboot would get the underclocking working again.
I only tried the webtop hack to see if I could get it working. I haven't gone back into it at all so I don't know if this is something that will reoccur. Although I will say that with my day to day use I have not run into any clocking issues since.
Thanks, is there a page somewhere which details which kernels do what and which would work with my rom?

This is the page for faux's kernels. As far as details, start reading and searching through that thread as well as the threads for any ROMS you are using. 99% of the time people will either have the same problem (and possible fix), the other 1% of the time they will identify a bug (i.e. maxed out CPU).
Keep in mind faux does have different kernels for Froyo, GB, and CM7.
For some reason even if I move the slider from 1300my to 1000, when I touch the screen with at least 3 fingers for a few seconds it pegs out at 1300. I read our cpu's are daisy chained so to speak
so the 2nd core kicks in when needed. I tried cpu tuner and it gives the option to powersave and only use one core or if you choose performance it will allow Both cores. Just might be setcpu isn't designed fully for our dual core setup.
thanks for the link to kernels, but i cant find one for HomBase, or a Kernel only download on the homebase thread. i have the Version2, which has some blur, but only the 1.0Ghz clock kernel. where could i get the 1.3GHz download by itself, to see if that might help, as its the one CM7 had iirc
Thanks

Get the 1.3 from the faux thread that I linked to. They're in the very first post...
CM7 is the only ROM that has its own custom faux kernel. For all other ROMS just match the kernel to the build the ROM is based off of (Froyo or GB). If you're using V.2 of Homebase then use the GB one.
Update: Also, there are other kernels out there. I was only using faux's as an example since you were using CM7 and Homebase.
thanks, ive now got the 1.3Ghz kernel installed successfuly, but it still seems like setcpu will not underclock. i dont know if its normal, but the "Scaling" option is greyed out, and i cant get access to the Advanced tab. is there something im doing wrong in setcpu itself?

Lack of underclocking is a known issue with the latest OC kernel. I'm unclear whether it's actually a bug with the kernel or with setCPU not supporting dual core devices. But yeah, there's a problem with it right now. I'm on the stock enhanced, and other than the webtop issue I mentioned above, it works fine.
Scaling/advanced are not available, this is something that is determined by the kernel you are using not the app.
ok so if i understand you right i would be best off using the stock enhanced kernel (for now), as it will underclock fine?

It's working perfectly for me, except after webtop use (which I don't normally use).
I'm still having the same issues regardless of weather I choose power save or performance it will not underclock, and those are the only governors I get the option of :s
