Hi i cannot set custom ringtones for my contacts on mts. I come from a g1 had all my contacts on google and everything sync ok with my contacts i just cannot set custom ringtones. I am using mp3's for the music and ringdroid to cut the songs. One song has worked and that was only to set my default ringtone
it took me a while to figure this out, i also came from the G1. all you have to do is go to contacts, just touch the name you want to change the ring tone for(not long press) and scroll down and you should see the option of ring tone in there
Yeah, strangely enough it is not an option while "editing" a contact. Yet only when "viewing" contact details. Strange.

a way of setting tones for multi contacts
I found while browsing my sd card with Astro file manager that if I started playing the song and paused it, then hit the menu key it would come with "set as ringtone" touching that would bring up choices of Phone ringtone, Contact ringtone and Notification sound. selecting contact lets you assign multiple contacts at once. just remember to hit save in the lower left corner of the screen before exiting... wife was getting irritated because "it wasn't working after many tries" because she didn't see the save button

thanks for the info...one issue i hope you can help with tho: once you have changed the contact's ringtone, does it stay changed or does it revert back to the default ringtone at some point? also, what is the speed of the sd card you are using? i ask bc lots of people have issues with the phone not doing ringtones properly. some say its the speed of the sdcard and some also say you have to create ringtone/notifications folders (via astro or some other file explorer) and place your sounds in there. i know on my mytouch3g with stock sd card (speed 2), individual ringtones never worked properly. only custom notifications and phone ringtone worked...

any body know a way to get my sounds ( mp3 files ) as notifercations ,
i would like to have my own text and email sounds !
i have tried by downlading a file explora program from the market but alas that dont work either
need help or ideas
create a folder called "notifications" in the root of your sd card, and place all the mp3's or wav in there and it should display when you select a sound in the notification settings.
thatnks for that ...
in the mean time i also found an app called tone picker that seems to work quite well

No problem mate.
Does that let you choose different tones for lets say both email and sms,
cause right now you I can only choose one for both.
i thought so at first but now it dont seem to ? i can have differnt tones for each email account but not a differnt one for sms ....
perhaps a folder is the way to go

If you go in to mail messages and settings and choose a notification there and do the same for sms they end up different. The personalise setting for notifications seems to change both together. Let me know if it works for you too or if its a gmail / sms only solution
The Hero has a 'default notification' sound. You can set this to whatever you want by putting your sound file in a /notifications folder on the SD. This sound file is the one used when you receive an email in the HTC email app, and also when you connect/disconnect USB etc...
You can change your SMS sound file by going into settings in the Messages app. You can change your Gmail email sound file by going into settings in the Google mail app. But currently you cannot have a custom sound file for the HTC email app without also having that sound file as the 'default notification' ie. your Hero will play the same sound when you get an email as it does when it dis/connects to USB. I find that a bit annoying but I'm sure it will be fixed in an update.
how do i change message ringtone to mp3? someone help me plssssssss!
hey
just put the .mp3 in the documents folder on your phone
you should have a My Documents\My Ringtones (preferred) or there is a Windows\Rings, either one will do.
then go to settings, sounds, notifications tab, from Event: drop down select Phone: Incoming call.

the Q is for atext message not an incoming call..
So this won't help.
As far as i now, you cannot use an mp3 for this.
change it into a WAV frmat and it will work.
it might be possible you need to put it in a special location (such as the windows folder or the my documents folder)
Yeah it's possible,
either do as gazzacbr said, but choose "Messaging: New text message" you can change almost all the phones sounds here...
I preffer this easier way (for me)
Slide to settings > Press Sounds > Scroll to bottom for "Notification Sounds" > Press the notification you want to change and select it off the list
If the mp3 isnt listed then use the FileManager, find your mp3 and hold down on it, when the menu appears scroll down to "Set as Ringtone" which actually just puts it in on the list of selectable tones. Then simply repeat the steps above.
- I should probably note, I downloaded an update off HTC's website that had something to do with MP3 ringtones but I could initially do this beforehand anyway.

I can't find it... can you please put it here?
He said he wants a mp3 to be used as a new text message tone. this is something even i wanted to ask, but well it cant be done. tried everything. the patch is for something else. tried putting it into my ring tones folder, tried putting the mp3 (a 26sec file) into windows ring folder but na nothing, restarted still nothing. the only thing i think will work is to try converting it into .wav format.
@rvrosa its there in touch2 support.
it can be done. i currently use a MP3 file as my SMS alert, and a different MP3 as my email alert.
If my previous technique doesnt work, copy the desired MP3 to the root of your microSD card. It will automatically list it in the selectable ringtones
under mobile device go into the folder that says application data then the folder that says sounds, put the mp3 in there and you should be able to select it for your sms.
how can I set a custom ringtone for when i receive a text or email?
i dont like the OEM sounds and want to set my own
thanks!

this. Don't put it in the Windows/ring folder. Drop the ringtone in the windows folder itself. That's what I had to do. Hope that helps.
I also suspect the my documents folder works too.
Saving music files to SD Card/My Documents worked for me.. All work as a rigntone.. For text message I believe the songs have to be over a certain file size, i had some 15-30 secons text message ringtones on my previous phone and these arent picked up on the HTC HD2 if i want them as text message ringer.. The complete songs work fine..
Does anyone know how to stop a text message ringtone without opening the text message?? I have a 2 minute song as as txt ringtone and it wont stop playing unless i actually open the messaging folder to see the text.. Also, if i get a txt the song will start playing, and if i get another txt 5 seconds later, the same song will play again overlapping previous txt ringtone.. thus both songs play at same time until i open message..
Any help is appreciated..
Any help??
Also my on my brothers HTC HD2 we are having a problem where the sms ringtone is causin his phone to freeze half way thru the song.. He has a regular song as sms.

There is no way to Stop the sound with out opening the ringtone, The best advice I can give is to make the ringtone shorter. Normaly around 3 sec or so
Thanks for the advice.. However, I added some 10-15 second mp3 songs i had.. And the phone doesnt detect them in order to use them as sms ringers. Seems to be that the file has to be over a certain size.. Anyone else has this issue?
Another observation was that if you fo to Setting> All Setting> Sound & Notifications.. Notifications tab, Select Incoming Message, and select Display Message on Screen.. Then the ringtone no matter how long it is, it will only sound for 3-5 seconds and stop...
If you're with other droid handset you cold simply go to contact>menu>option but in i9000 i dont see anything like that.
Any advice?
You can assign a ring tone if the contact is a "Phone" type in other mean you made it!.
but if your contact is "SNS contacts" as you got it from the internet accounts like gmail, you can't assign a ring tone beside the normal one.
that's what i realized if I'm not wrong.

I know how you feel, cause as i was searching in my phone i realized that
half my contact synced!.
There is a way to do this, albeit very tedious. For every contact that you want to assign individual ringtone, you need to create a contact with the same name but in phone memory. During the creation, you can assign the ringtone to the phone contact. You just need to create with name and ringtone and nothing else. Your phone will link the 2 contacts together (this and the same-named gmail one), and viola, you have your individual ringtone.
I have tried other ways like ringdroid and ringtone manager and it doesn't work. Though the ringtone gets assigned to the gmail contact when I used these apps, the phone still use the default sound when they call. The above seems to be the only way that works.
Also if you noticed, your contact picture gets very blurred and pixelated (in the phone canvas during calls) when they are synced from gmail. The only way around this problem is also the above, ie assign pic to phone contact and link them.
Yes, you are right.
there's downSide for this like in the e-mail app, when you press the contact to select one, you will see all the contacts twice
Nothing is perfect
Not 100% sure, but guess you can change it without copy all into phone with the app. Zedge. That is a app for change wallpapers and ringtones, not use it for a while but worth look it upp.

Actually you won't. Your phone contact has nothing except the ringtone or pic. So in your email, phone or other apps only the contact with the relevant field populated will be shown
A few months ago I moved from Windows Mobile 6.5 to Android. A feature I miss a bunch is the ability to have my scheduled tasks alert me. Using Android the task alert is the text message alert. I have been unable to find a way to make my tasks have a separate alert. Does anyone know of a way to do this? Thanks!
Are you referring to the notification ringtones? because you can change that through the settings in the calander app to make it something different than the default.

yes that is what I am referring to... however if I change the notification ring tone it changes the text message ring tone.
Tasks
I have all my schedules for work in my phone set up in my calander, since i also came from a Windows phone (Q9C) i was using outlook for all my apts. THere is a exchange program u can use thru google that will link the 2 and bring all your tasks into your new calander on your phone. U can then set each event to alert u a set time before, just like in WINM0b. I set mine up to alert me 1 hour before i work and if the phone is on silent, theres a icon on top left screen telling me theres a event. u can also set up sounds. I hope this helps, and hope the info helps u. I am running Dk28 Froyo and there are some differences, so if some of this makes no sense, thats prob the reason. the program thru google is google calander. seach for it, it works

When you change it through the calendar app, it only effects notifications from that app, the default notification ringtone will remain the same. Also, you can specify a specific notification ringtone through the messaging app, and gmail as well, and have them all be something different than the default notification ringtone that is set through the main settings->sound menu.
Open up the calendar app, hit the menu button, select settings, then change the ringtone for that app.
All my appointments are through google calender. I am running Froyo (Bonsai MOD). The one hour thing is what I have as well... the issue I am having is my text msg alert seems like it has to be the same as the task alert. I liked having my task alert long(like a ring tone) and I like having a short text msg alert.

You can also DL tone picker from the market. It will give you a few more selections when trying to change notification tones, including the use of music found on your SD card. Just a lil FYI if you're not too big on system tones only.

Thanks for the heads up however "Select music" is installed by default and will let you do the music from your SD card thing(all my ring tones are there)
You can also just create a directory on your sd card and place your audio files there. On your sd card, create a directory with folders as such
sdcard
|-media
--|-audio
----|-alarms
------|-random.mp3
------|-random.ogg
----|-notifications
------|-another.mp3
------|-another.aac
----|-ringtones
------|-you_get_the_picture.mp3
------|-insert_audio_file_here.wav
