That would be extremely useful over any custom Rom in my opinion.....I'm actually considering returning my EVO based upon those issues alone and i doubt HTC will fix it during the next 15 days or so

Grounding really affecting you at all? The screen works fine on my EVO grounded or not, curious to see some testing on stock and custom roms. audio recording will be improved by someone, whether it be us or htc first idk but it will happen.
Yes I'm having serious issues with my screen and the audio quality when rec hd video sounds like an extremely low bit

The problem with the audio is that it's recorded in 8KHz Narrowband AMR audio codec. Also, the video codec is generic MPEG4 at 6Megabits/sec which is significantly less impressive than H.264 at the same bitrate.
Any ideas why the EVO could not record directly into H.264 video and AAC audio codecs?

I'm betting HTC didn't want to pay royalties to use the H.264 and AAC codecs, as they are both licensed technologies and not open source.

I just installed CorePlayer onto my device and video quality is extremely choppy, worse than my HTC Diamond. Do other people experience this problem, there is horrible pixelation and tearing in all videos. One reason which I chose this device over Android is b/c of Coreplayer but the video quality is horrible, I tried toggling the settings from GDI and directdraw, but nothing works, tried h.264 and xvid videos.
UPDATE:
Seems like turning off "Use blitting instead of overlay" solves the problem of intense pixelation and tearing, but video quality is still underwhelming when compared to stock player. But stock player does not play Xvid. When I encode directly from bluray VC-1 Source to 800x480, video quality is amazing on stock player.
Does anyone know what are the best settings for CorePlayer on the Expo, seems like there was a thread like this for the HD2 a while ago.
what version of core player are you using?

Not sure what you are doing when converting the videos, but I have never had a single video do what you are describing. You have to look at more than just the resolution when recoding videos. You also have to look at the bit rate and codec used. I download and watch anime on my expo without having to recode the videos at all. I even played a 1.3gb video in 720p resolution with no lag or other video issues. I'm using the tcpmp-0.72 so it might be the version you're using too.
What are you using to encode your videos? If you have to recode them to work on the phone, try using PocketDivx. It works like a charm. The only reason I use that is to make the file size smaller so it's not taking up a lot of space on my storage card.

Can you confirm that for me? Using TCPMP-0.72 you can watch 1280x720p videos without any dropped frames? Is this DivX/Xvid or MP4/h.264? What type of benchmark values are you getting?
I noticed after coming from recording something with live music: the nexus ones audio recording quality SUCKS! I say this because my friend recorded the same thing with his palm pre, and its much nicer on the ears. I was reading something about the nexus using the inferior amr codec for the audio portion of the video, and was wondering with the new 720p hacks was this overcome...
I recorded a short clip of my voice with HTC's Voice recorder app. Then i went and downloaded TapeMachine Lite from the market. WOW what a difference. I always thought the DHD's poor audio recording was down to hardware, but clearly not. HTC for some reason set the audio output to 8000Khz, but TapeRecorder records at 44.1Khz or 48Khz, in a format of your choice (WAV is default).
So i was wondering, how easy would it be to implement this quality recording in the camcorder app? If someone does this then i'll happily shell out some money for the cause.
I just repeated what you've just posted. Wow, what a difference. Why this isn't default on the DHD camcorder I don't know.
I think the sample rate in the camcorder is a limitation of the audio codec that is used, just guessing tho as I'm not sure of the all the limitations with aac-lc

no the camera 720p encoding is AVC h264 with AAC audio, the standard is baseline L3.1 and based on this standard the audio should be encoded at 44khz 160kb bitrate
8khz is just one of those amazingly stupid things HTC keeps on slipping in, i don't know if its done to lower the stress on the recording frame rate
i sent them an enraged email about this a while ago and all they said that its passed on to the accurate department
but with 8khz i was surprised at the loudness of the recording, which explains your post today
can someone fix it with a patch? and while at it, please increase the screen red saturation a little
I just got an htc desire hd and generally really happy with it. The main gripe tho is why they choose to use a dated codec like 3gp is beyond me with crap 8000khz sound. HD video quality at 720p with dreadfull audio is like putting a ferrari engine in a corsa. Why did they not choose mp4 cd quality 44.1 khz instead of this crap? It's marketed as a multimedia phone with a video format which is, well lets face only compatible with other phones unless you convert it which defeats the whole purpose of having nice prestine hd.
we should have an online petition for this! video recording in mp4 with aac audio!
3rd party recording apps maybe?
Online petition doesn't work anyways.
Sent via psychic transmittion.
Well i sent htc a couple of emails, stating that the audio quality for video is even overshadowed by nokia phones which are 6 years old, why they still use dreadfull audio when literally every other phone on the market from iphones, nokia's sony erricson's all have higher quality audio recording. I find it hard to believe they have done it because of performance issues, most digital camcorders dont have 1ghz processors and they can do it hands down. HTC are still using the same old rubbish low quality audio thats been around on their pda phones since windows mobile 5. It's time to move on, and if its for compatiblity, well how many people send 20 min HD 720p multimedia messages? when no network carriers even support formats or resolutions like that. I think its misleading and false advertising for HTC promoting this phone as having all this great video quality 8mega pixel cam and HD video to completely let us down with zx spectrum like audio quality. What where the HTC designers even thinking is beyond me. Why do they let iphone and nokia, samsung completley walk all over them in the audio department.

I disagree that the Sensation is way better than the Desire HD. Yes it is an evolution of the DHD, but in terms of user experience the phones are still very similar. I won't be upgrading because i dont really think the Sensation is too much of an upgrade (bar newer processor).
With that said, OP, i think you'll be very happy to know that the new Gingerbread update coming anytime now will have LARGELY improved audio. It will have sampling rate of 44.1 KHz and 128 Kbps bitrate. This is confirmed in the leaked version in the development section, i've seen a recording and the sound is way better.
Now one area i cant argue with however is the loudspeaker on the DHD. It's terrible. Maybe the Sensation is better there.

First of all 3gp is a container, not a codec. In that container you'll find the same codecs for the audio and video streams like in the mp4 container used by other camcoders - namely h264 for the video and aac for the audio. The poor quality is due to the codec settings used by the application - 8kHz, 32kbps. Why they did that is beyond me. Maybe the frequency response of the microphone is limited to 4kHz and if this is the case, neither Gingerbread, nor Zebra Cake will fix that.
The micropone can record in pristine 44.1khz quality try using tape machine application, the sound quality is fine, also there appears to be 2 microphones on the htc one for phone calls and another for audio recording. Tape machine allows you to select either or, and they both record in good quality, there could even be the possibility of having stereo records if there are 2.

Like someone else mentioned, .3gp is only the container, not the codec. So you don't necessarily have to reconvert them, just change the container. Should be much faster that way.
Download this program Avidemux: http://fixounet.free.fr/avidemux/
Drag your videos in, on the left leave Video and Audio as is, and only change Format to MP4. Select save video and make sure you type in .mp4 at the end of the filename (otherwise it wont save as a video). You'll notice that it takes only a couple of seconds to change the container and viola you have an mp4 video
What's wrong with htc? even the new sensation has horrible audio quality, check out this video where they compare the sensation's 1080p recording vs the lg 2x , the guy's voiced sounds high pitched :/

still the audio recording quality on the camcorder is still piss poor for a device of this calibre
Has the Gingergread update not sorted that yet?
Finally our devices can handle h264 high profile and main profile. Also default mkv library support. Seems video performance is good but unfortunately audio performance is not the same. Atrix still cant handle AC3 audio codec. Any ideas or fixes for this?

I notice audio seems to be a lot lower on this new build.
Are you guys using entertainment center to play video? The reason i ask is because it keeps force closing for me. Im wondering if reflashing system and webtop would fix this problem..

I tried upnplay some of my mkv's from my xbmc box and native player did not work.
Rockplayer works but slow and only in software.
Might transfer a mkv over and see how that works.
Only can play 720p and lower, cant play 1080p and audio codec must be AAC. I tried 720P H264 High Profile with ACC and it plays without any lag.

Thanks! That's pretty damn impressive! Not every netbook can handle 720p video.
Not working via hardware
Hi,
I installed 2.3.4 (Ninja ROM), but here, I'm able to play MP4 720p only via SOFTWARE DECODE (lag)....Via hardware, the same error message of Froyo (cannot play).....
Maybe I need some help.......
I can play high profile videos (on cherryblur), but sound doesnt work. Any fixes to this yet?
