now that we have root is there a way to disable Htc sense
Patience! Roms are just around the corner I am sure. I know I am +1 on getting rid of the Sense crap. I hate it!

You can't just disable sense, it IS the UI and for all intents (lol) and purposes, the OS. Vanilla Google Android 2.1 is a different kernel than Android HTC Sense 2.1, so it has to be replaced, lock stock and barrel. Go over and look at the Dream forums, the Sense&Espresso camp is quite different from the Donut, Eclair, Froyo camp. If you've ever used linux, the difference between Gnome distros and KDE distros is a pretty apt (lol) comparison. They can run each others' programs (usually), but they are built up from the kernel differently. So like the other dude said, just wait a sec

There's some serious work to be done unless we get some test keys. Don't think that customs ROMs will be coming within the next week.
You can start by using a different launcher. I like launcherpro from the market. Its really nice and fast compared to sense. Once you install a new launcher, make sure you set it as your default and then reboot your phone.
You can also remove a lot of sense apps while in recovery. Just be careful what you remove. Some things are needed or your phone will boot loop or you might get a mess if fc's upon rebooting. you might want to try just renaming them first to see if there is any bad side effect before actually removing it. You can also copy the apps you remove to your phone for backup purposes. Be careful 'cuz I am not responsible for you bricking your phone.

So we basically we should just wait for a fresh 2.1 rom from one of our devs, Ill just sit here and twittle my thumbs in the mean time
If twiddling thumbs (as I am doing) isnt working for you, the other option is to become a developer. No better way to make things happen than to do it yourself! I dont have the time and patients to learn Android right now, it just isnt plausible....so I wait.
As far as the launcher goes, that isnt the portion of Sense I dont like. The launcher is usable. Its the OSK, the phone screens, etc. I tried the launchers, but it wasn't what I am after. I want a plain Jane Vanilla rom, like my Nexus had.

I agree with you all I want is simple android 2.1 (or 2.2) without all the verizon crap they feel I need on my phone
Just use AWD or Launcher Pro... you won't see anything sense related using those unless you hunt for it.
if you think this is true, you have never used a vanilla rom. The phone, dialer screen, contact screen, etc are all still Sense (and junk to navigate and use). They are not related to launcher. I have used both Launcher Pro and ADW (not AWD) with the same result.

I have used both.... and after giving sense a try and not listening to others.... I actually prefer it over vanilla... everything works better imo with better integration.
...and thats fine for you...but not really correct to say that a Launcher will remove the feel of Sense. There is enough room in this world for Coke AND Pepsi...as well both Vanilla and Sense roms
Cyanogen based ROMs are the best. Sense sucks ... IMO.
Sent via my rooted Incredible
I "replaced" my SenseUI with ADW, and it works great. I say "replaced" because by installing ADW or Launcher Pro, you're only replacing the UI part of Sense. Sense will still run underneath. Until custom ROMs come (which won't happen until we get an unlocked NAND), that's what we've got.
I am really looking forward to getting Froyo. I came from a Moto Droid where I had just recently installed Froyo, and it was so fast. I actually like the Incredible more because of the better screen and lighter feel with no keyboard, but the Droid was so much faster on Froyo it almost makes me want to go back until they get the Incredible figured out.
I think if you came from WinMo and are used to Sense then you will like it on Android. If not then most will hate it.
Not to clutter this post or change subject
I dont see you you can say the screen on the incredible is better. I have both and I still think the Moto droids screen is better higher res and easier to see in sunlight. again its my opinion.
Dont get me wrong they are very close in resolution but the Moto droid is slightly higher. Inside with no sun on them they are very close I'll give it that.

Many seem to want the HTC Desire ROM for Sense UI just because of the HTC apps and widgets. People like me prefer the Stock experience with the HTC apps and widgets installed.
Some of the reasons for this include the preference of the consistent Googley look and feel, smoother scrolling on stock apps, and many other objective and subjective reasons.
Modaco provides an Online Kitchen for making custom HTC Desire port ROMs for N1. On the kitchen, you can choose to not include the Sense/Rosie app in the ROM. This is a huge step to creating the stock look and feel. How do we install the custom launcher without the need to bake a custom ROM with the Online Kitchen? Will this also convert the overall look and feel to the stock one?
Because we can't install HTC apps and widgets without the whole HTC Sense UI framework, how do we achieve seemingly having a stock ROM look and feel + HTC apps and widgets?

Code:
adb shell rm /system/app/Rosie.apk
will drop Rosie and give you your standard launcher. I highly recommend grabbing 'Root Explorer' from the Market and perusing the /system/app dir.

I was able to drop Rosie.
This can be done by simple using Home Switcher (an app on the Market) to use "Launcher" instead of "Rosie" as the Home app. However, HTC widgets can't be used without Rosie. HTC apps are fine without it, though
Still a step forward.
EDIT:
I also noticed that things are still kinda laggy. Scrolling the stock app list isn't as smooth as how it is on stock or other ROMs. Probably, the lag is caused by the ROM. It's still in alpha so we'll just have to wait. Still very early now
I figured I was in the minority here with zero interest in senseUI. I quite like the stock look/feel of android 2.1 but can fully appreciate the user experience the widgets and such inside sense provides.
I do wonder if all of the rom creators are going to jump on the senseUI bandwagon and move away from the stock experience leaving those of us who rather not touch HTC's bastardization out in the cold Thankfully Paul seems to be keeping everyone in mind with his roms...I wonder what Cyan is going to do with future releases...
...this post contains zero useful information
Strange is, that on Hero (with SenseUI) everybody wanted a stock rom without it, and on Nexus (without SenseUI, you know) everybody wants these lame senseUI.
I like this smooth on stock Android, hoping, that Paul and cyanogen creates there good stuff, based on real Nexus code wthout anything of the HTC stuff.
I dn't know, why there is so much hype about these Desire ROMs for Nexus.
I belive it will be better to make the stock ROMs better...

2,5 things interesting me in Desire rom:
1) HTC PDF Viewer
2) highlight text for copy (like on iphone)
3) flash player in web browser (it's 0,5 thing, because work not well on all websites.... )
I hate the rest... (after test Paul roms) it's just my modest opinion!

Because we would like to have some sense app on stock rom! not to have Desire rom with stock apps!
You make a great work but for my daily use, there to much bug for now... (bluetooth, flash, missed app in market, etc...)
I'm sure in next weeks I could make another good try on your rom!
PS: did you see my private msg on Modaco? thanks!
Dislike sense UI love the stock look.
But HTC'S framework do have quite a few added extras that would make the stock 2.1 awesome all around.
one being the select text format similar to the iphone. The camera on desire is 100x way more attractive then the stock one. The htc camera makes you feel like your holding a 2010 product. The stock camera feels and looks like is a polaroid cam.
To have desire with everything it brings widgets, apps & have the stock look feel and dialer is my DESIRE.
The dialer on HTC'S is awful. I am so used to stock 2.1 contacts app is just awesome.

you cant run the widgets and thats what the OP was talking about.
I'd like to use the stock contacts and dialer because the HTC dialer doesn't let me dial out using my google voice number.

I'll give you numbers one and two. At least the nexus will be getting (as far as we all know anyways) full flash (10.1) while the desire thus far has flash lite...
These three are not enough to keep me stomaching seuseui though.
Its all a matter of opinion on what you like. I was trying to get a lot of what the senseui does natively already on my stock 2.1 so it makes things easier for me. I can't see all that much of a difference in stock 2.1 vs. senseui in terms of how it looks anyways. Just a couple small visual differences.
The senseui has a lot to offer over stock. The apps, widgets, clock, lock screen that allows control over music, better copy and paste, browser is better, ability to call someone from any screen and not have to worry about finding phone icon, flat scrolling for me in programs is better than a 3d scroll, dark status bar unlike the white stock,
Most of this can be done through market apps and or tweaks done to a stock rom but this seems to do it better all in one. The things senseui does not have that are on stock I just move over.

I only meant that with senseui the phone icon follows you through all 7 pages as opposed to the stock 2.1 where you have to click on the actual phone icon to launch the dialer.

Simple solution for that really...http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=630659
Obviously this mimics the way sense handles things but such a simple mod removes yet another reason to change the entire interface.
I don't find the sense ui intuitive, nor do I like it as a whole much in the same way I don't like apple's ui or find it intuitive
But as you said before, it's all a matter of opinion. I assume if I were to force myself to acclimate to sense, I would get used to it. This all becomes a moot point though if/when flash 10.1 hits for our phones and not for the desire/sense. People will have to choose between full flash (assuming that the desire sticks with flash lite) and sense...unless someone manages to build a nexus-centric rom with sense baked in

HI.
Since there are three main roms (like i think) i would like to know, which one you are using including launcher.
stock + home++
The custom ROMS are so tempting. Gets better every day so I'm waiting.
Desire with Sense. Was getting bored of the stock look and home replacements.
Stock/Stock
CM + Home++
stock, stock for me.. Just waiting patiently for the perfect one for my needs!!
i still donĀ“t know, if i should stay with cm or switch to the desire rom. hmm
I don't stay on anyone long enough to say...
As I type, I am on my custom cooked Modaco Desire a10, before that it was Manup's Desire, before that it was CM, and by the end of today I will be on my custom cooked Modaco stock.
If you are wondering what is the best, for me it is a combo.
Stock (but with .32 Kernal), OpenHome/GDE More often OpenHome
thanks for the input.
i think i will stay with CM and stock launcher

lol, why base your choice on other people's opinions? Make up your own mind...
Try out others like Sense and see what YOU like.
And I'm willing to bet that a lot of those people who voted stock haven't tried Sense
optimized CM, auto rotating homescreen launcher, black bar, HTC_IME with transparent patch.
This made my phone friggin sweet.
Voted CM + Stock Launcher, but today I updated to NexTheme's Launcher. I just wish the whole NexTheme would go with Cyan to replace all of the Green. So sick of Green, Green, and more freakin' Green!
I barely prefer stock at this point but the only sense I've tried was on g1 which was painful. But I used it enough to know that I prefer stock regardless of speed although I'd appreciate a better stock music app and better Widgets, when google decided to be largely hands off regarding widgets and just include unimpressive but effective ones, I think (hope ) they anticipated much better contributions by devs on that front. But perhaps in time either 3rd parties will offer impressive music/settings/messaging widgets....or else maybe google will give in an upgrade the stock ones. If the Widgets dont change my vote probably will....

Honestly, I don't exact see how it is possible to prefer the default Vanilla Android over Sense, I can't exactly see what is more beneficial about Vanilla.
Everything is laid out better, everything is more glossy, everything is just so nice in Sense, and everything just integrates and flows so smoothly - while Vanilla is just plain. What is it that makes people prefer Vanilla more? If you want the eye-candy launcher, just switch to it. If you want the glossy 3D Gallery, install it.
Seriously, what makes things better? I KNOW that there will be someone who can easily tell me, and I'm kinda ready to hear their thoughts ^.~ but I believe most of it will be personal preference.. I would think..
i really do not like the laucher for sense at all. i also just do not like the look or feel of sense at all. i love the clock/weather so i got weather widget donate. i love the keyboard so i got HTC_IME. So the stock UI gives you more options and more control.
plus i prefer the stock launcher. I dont mind hitting the home button then going to dailer one. its much better then having that big ugly bar at the bottom.

I for one like Sense, well I am not running a Sense ROM now I do miss a few things. So I wanted to see what people dis like and like about it and well maybe help some of us out. You know, finding way to forget about Sense.
I am running Cyanogenmod 6.0.0 now.
Like:
1: Flash {Cant find a work around}
2: Widgets
a: Peep {There is twitter but I like how dark peep is}
b: Friend Stream
c: Calender {Cant find a replacement }
d: Contact {Contact Widget does a great job as a replacement }
3: The ringer getting low when you pick up the phone {Cant find a work around}
Other than that, I cant say I miss Sense all to much, to tell the truth I am really liking adw launcher.
But if you have anything that helps replace what Sense does give you should add a list and if you are just missing something you should ask here, maybe one of us will be able to help you out.

I like AOSP because it is much faster than Sense regardless of what you do to speed it up. I love the look of sense, but after buying a couple of apps and downloading others I can say that I do not miss Sense.
LauncherPro Plus-He is working on Sense like widgets. I now use this instead of Rosie.
Beautiful Widgets or Fancy Widgets- imitates Weather and clock from Sense. You'll have to find a fancy widget download online as they had a C&D order from HTC.
Extended Controls- Allows more options than the power control widget
CalWidget-Calander Widget on your home screen. I think you can change text and background color with this one.
I'm not a social networking freak so I don't care about those, but I know that they will get friendstream working on aosp. And you can still get all the other apps for aosp.
There is a setting somewhere to change the ringer volume on phone movement. I don't have CM6 flashed anymore, but I know its in the settings somehwere

Fyi nfinitefx45 just got jit working on a sense rom. I'm using it on my red dawn as I type. I'm getting between 4.4-4.8 on linpack and that's with all the extra crap I've got on my rom.
The days of saying aosp is faster is at an end. I've got no lag. Running smooth and extremely fast plus have sense and all the Widgets that come with it.
Sense will find a way onto froyo eventually and will be just as fast as aosp
It really does seem that AOSP can be just as great as Sense as far as cosmetics. So the only thing left is flash, is there any way to get flash working on ASOP 2.1 or the 2.2 we have now?
Thank you all for the great input!

What about quadrant?
Some will never give up on Sense. I used to hate AOSP. I didn't like the look and missed all the extra's found in Sense.Right now I keep switching between froyo and Sense. If only someone could get all the sense apps working with AOSP.
Flash will never come to the hero because it's not built for it. I love sense, but i've learned to get by in froyo. The main thing I miss is the nice widgets, but there are some nice replacements in the market. I use digiclock widget and the weather channel. For twitter, seesmic is better than anything and it is fast. Launcher pro will let you customize your bottom row just about any way you want and will let you have 7 home screens like sense. If you have your homescreen laid out just how you like it in sense, then it's not that hard to recreate it in AOSP, unless you use a lot of sense Widgets.

We've had Flash for quite a while now.
Sense just seems like a waste of memory to me. Everything can be duplicated with Market widgets.
I really wish I knew what people saw in it, I hate it with a passion.
The way I see it is, Sense UI does offer things that other phones dont have and HTC has stayed a head of the game a little by giving us all just a little bit extra (flash)
On top of that, how many themes are out there for AWR or Luncher Pro? Well Sense if at heart a big theme, Things are made to go to gather and its simple and dark.
But anyway, How do we get Flash with out Sense?

Have you tested the new sensebuild /w jit on quadrant? It is a better benchmark than linpack, if for no other reason than it tests more than floating point calculations.

Whats the actual difference, does Sence in some way slow the phone down?
I use the clock, friends feed, messages, mail, agenda and the music widgets.
However the one thing that I really dont like is the slide down thing that sense brings, I much prefer the press/slide left/right that you get with the plain Android builds.
So, are there advantages to running a more vanilla android version with some widgets over the sense style ROMs.
I am on mike1986's Android Revolution.
I myself believe sense itself make things sense. For instance the iPhone-like copy&paste.
But yeah you're right it's huge and clumsy. But that's why desire hd has such big ram. I feel sick for not getting full advantage of my device.

If you root the phone using VISIONary+ you can delete/rename the Lockscreen.apk I believe and it will return to the vanilla lockscreen. As for jazzy widgets that's a Sense thing, unless you buy and install LauncherPro over ADW.Launcher, LauncherPro has People, Bookmarks, Calaendar, Messaging, Twitter, Facebook & Friends widgets that can be used. There is also music widget control using Cyanogen.
I find sense slow and garish, it slows down the phone for no good reason, ASOP ROMs are much lighter and look, IMO, much prettier and unique.

I got rid of my Sense just recently, I prefer the phone this way, Sense just took too much space, try other Launchers out, if you prefer it, I suggest you try out the Cyanogen ROM, which I have done. A whole lot better.
i dont get it, people who have cyanogen seem to think its LOADS better, but its not though is it, iv used it on the hero and now running it on dhd.
its ok, just more theming options and alot uglier imo, dont like contacts, or phone or music or many of the default apps
thats where sense is LOADS better, its alot easier and nicer to use, has better features
saying this im on cyanogen and really cnt be assed to change back otherwise i would, and i wanna try ginger out when its out
apart from that sense blow cyanogen out the water

People like the simplicity of Cyanogen. Sense slows even the DHD down, it's aweful. And to boot pretty much everyone with an Android phone has it. It's better to be unique.
you think sense slows dhd down? yeh it makes it sooooo laggy, i get no slow downs using sense and never had not even on hero
people just go with what most say, to make themselves feel "unique", its mainly down to the rom dev if it has lag or not, although it ironic you say your unique for using cyanogen just like allll the others

Scroll down to the bottom of your app drawer and look at the lag as it reaches the bottom, and open your SMS's and scroll, notice the lag. Sense isn't well coded. And of all the people on XDA how many do I know personally? None. How many of my collegues and friends have Android phones? Lots, how many have Cyanogen? None. That makes it unique.

Point well made.
I really can't notice nay slow down due to Sense whatsoever. I really do think that someone should clearly "sell" the advantages of dumping Sense, other than just plain old enthusiasm for hacking something. I think it is more down to aesthetics than anything else. Try other ROMs and see if you like them, you might. I like the fact that HTC have at least tried to add value to Android.
A further irony is having come from the Magic I can vouch for the fact that much effort was put into porting Sense to that plain Android phone.
Sorry, no lag when I scroll my SMS or App drawer. The DHD can definitely deal with the demands of Sense.
Sense is pretty cool and only lags if you try to make it. I think that if all Android phones came with Cyanogen as the stock ROM then the Sense ROM would be a massive hit. Cyanogen is definitely a good choice because it's clean and fast but until i actually need my Desire HD to run faster and more efficiently i won't use it. That's why i will go sort of halfway and flash a cooked sense based ROM like Leedroid.

look at what lag? my app draw runs fine using launcher pro plus, sms's all run with no lag difference than cyan, just cyan is uglier
who says sense isnt well coded? its coded for normal peole who dont want to run and say i hacked my phone now everyone else says its loads faster so it must be
fair enough benchmarks might say it but is it noticeable? no
as i say its all down to the rom dev if its laggy or not

I have to admit I didn't try it out on desire hd but I tried it when I'm with a hero. Say, cyan is for dev and sense is for users. Whatever you get what you want.

Lol, LauncherPro isn't the default launcher, so on a Sense based ROM it will be faster, I am simply pointing out that stock Sense, totally stock launcher and all, lags.
We could argue until the cows come home which is better, but I prefer the alternative that is Cyanogen. At least then I can have a totally black and white theme which is what I like. And it's only recently I have switched to ASOP previously I used a Sense based ROM on my Desire, but craved the ASOP lockscreens and dialer.
If we move to another ROM apart from sense, does this mean that we will be losing some features like "louder ring in the bag, flip over the phone for quite" etc... ?
Does Cyanogen ROM provide these all?

You loose louder ring but flip to silence still works. You do loose quite a few of the jazzy features of Sense.

Is there any exact list showing sense features we will be losing? I guess that's important to know before deciding to move a different ROM, right?

Not that, I know of. Sense Copy & Paste is one of them, there is no magnification window when you copy and paste on the DHD, and the louder ring, that's all I can think of off the top of my head.

lol who said it had to be standard? sense comes with to much bloatware, so i remove most of it
have you tried this theme addon? http://classical-gas.blogspot.com/2010/12/jamt-htc-desire-cyanogenmod-610rc2.html
works real nice i have cyan set up alight atm but hopefuly not long till the ginger comes along
I am back on a sense rom. Rcmixhd since adfree and other components work correctly unlike on the other sense roms I've tried. I used to love Cyanogen on my Nexus One but the new sense is very slick indeed.
It does not lag. It does take a little longer to boot and use more memory but who cares when we have so much ram on the dhd. I don't know how the amount of room it takes can be an issue either considering we have 1.5gb rom. I still have 0.9gb free with 54 apps installed.
tbh I still love cyanogenmod but its htc locations which is keeping me on sense. Its the best android offline navigator I've tried in terms of routing here in New zealand and I love the fact I can just buy a cheap 1 month subscription for navigation in another country when I go overseas. Any other app one is forced to buy a complete package for that country at considerably larger cost.

I really don't like the Sense launcher, I use adw, but sense has lots of little modifications that are just nice to have. Text selection, quick lookup, freaking awesome dialer, flip to speaker etc
I'm running android revolution hd, no lags, excellent battery (whole day with pretty heavy use. Needs charging every night but I can use all the phones features as much as I like and not give the battery a second thought) also 2400 in quadrant. So all in all i really rate sense.
So I have this problem, where I cannot for the life of me stick to a stinkin ROM type. AOSP or Sense. And since I am a fan of Sense 1.0 and until just recently there has been no good gingerbread roms using it ive had to try almost all the 2.1/3.0 ROMS. None which I like. Our phone is just too slow to handle it well (IMO).
So, does anyone else have this indecisive behavior? If you do what do you find yourself on most of the time? Sense, or AOSP?
AOSP / CM7.
I found that all my indecisiveness was cured with themeing my phone.
Used Launcher Pro instead of the cruddy default launcher that CM7 uses, I used android kitchen (http://uot.dakra.lt/kitchen/) to theme my status bar, drop down and icons in the status bar- and I used a couple more themeing widgets and apps found from people at http://mycolorscreen.com/category/android/
Also I changed the dock background to a better looking one and I moved around the icons in Launcher Pro so that it'd be simpler to click on them quickly (like the phone icon).
I think the key is to find a stable yet up-to-date ROM, then mod the crap outta it until you really love it, then don't update it unless you really want to (like a new version of android comes out). I'm not planning on upgrading my CM7 unless android has a new release, which may be a few months.

Yeah but the problem I find with AOSP is that it indeed feels so half baked to me. Like there is no K9 dialing? WTH. (It's coming, some guy built it and is going to submit it to review, but still, it hasnt had this???) The browser is sooo much slower graphically. Flash is useless.
But it's so clean. And fast. never freezes.
And themes, eh they never feel complete either. Just my opinion. Thanks for sharing yours!

ah yeah I think you're missing some pieces. If you want T9 dialing then there are "dialer" apps out there. Go Dialer I think was one of the better ones, but I still prefer stock (no T9 smart dialing but I'm ok with it)
You don't have to use prepackaged themes, really you can theme your phone into anything you're looking for. There are apps, widgets and modifications to do it, if you need any hints on which apps and places to go I can let you know. I don't even know what browser comes with CM7, I always uninstall. Dolphin Mini Browser has always been my favorite.
I think you are looking at only what is presented with the ROM, you can really exchange/modify most things in any rooted ROM pretty easily.
and I don't mean to try and sell you on a particular ROM, I just want to make sure you know what's possible and what's out there
OP, you must be a REAL flash-o-holic. I just tried CM7.1... again... on my Tbolt and I can't STAND it. CM doesn't seem any faster on my dInc or my Tbolt than the Sense 1.0 ROM I had on the dInc or the Sense 3.0 3D ROM on my Tbolt. In fact, it shows more lag on both. It's just not a finished product in my opinion. To relate it to a car...
A good Sense ROM is like the whole package. Everything has been thought out and the right things added and the whole package pretty nicely tied together and polished.
AOSP is kinda like GM just sold you the rolling chassis. Now you gotta put some kind of body on it, something to steer it with, lights, seats, wheels better than the stamped steel crap they rolled off the truck on... It's like a hobby kit of an OS. If someone offered a decent package of widgets for AOSP I might give it more than a half a day on my phone. I just don't have any desire to spend hours of time and money trying to slowly build an AOSP ROM into something that begins to do what I want. If AOSP was my only choice, I'd be back on BlackBerry.
I've been on MIUI as a daily for probably 6 months now, the themeing possibilities with this ROM honestly have gotten rid of any need to crackflash for me. BTW OP, it has T9 stock and a bunch of other great things.
I also tried most of the Sense 3.0 ROMs and couldn't find one that I liked enough to stay for more than about a week (Nils BS3.0 for the record) and most only last a few hours. Just can't beat the smoothness and possibilities that come with MIUI IMO.
i have been using skyraider 4.3 the most, swapped it out recently for CM7 until today i went back, and was super glad i did.
Key features for me are:
-CM7 style dual slider lockscreen
(this is a must because i like to be able to go directly to the dialer or messages, and have instant access to switch the phone to vibrate/ring from the lockscreen)
-stock gingerbread keyboard (not a fan of the sense one)
-quick and stable
-sense dialer
Edit: There is also a skyraider 5.0 in the works, using the new OTA gingerbread framework, though not ETA for that yet
My experience has been that Sense 1.0 ROMs are the most stable and smooth. I liked SkyRaider the best for performance and customization, but now that GB is official it's hard to stay on Froyo. SR 5 is coming, but probably not for a while.
My daily right now is Insensitive-Minimalist 2.1. It has the Sense framework, most of the better Sense Apps, but everything else removed. It's fast and stable, IMHO. It lacks the customizable features in CM, but I can live without those.
I keep a backup of CM7 on my phone for when I want to play emulators with my wii controller, otherwise I hop around on various Sense roms. Really liking the Bliss port that's going on right now.

Ah you share my thoughts exactly. Cyanogenmod and the team do a great job of what they do but AOSP to me is like what you said, a chassis on wheels. My favorite ROMs used to be virtuous and skyraider, but I can't go back to froyo now that in on the gingerbread train.
