Mass Storage problems, mounting/umounting - Nexus One General

Most all my searches returned something about rooting, how to mount via console, etc, so I started a new thread. If someone knows of one off hand, please LINK to the thread in your post. I'll ask a mod to lock or delete this one IF and WHEN a good answer is found... thanks
I'm using froyo, and up until yesterday mounting the sdcard via my mac's usb connection was painless. Gallery works fine while not connected, and copying files between the mac and the nexus is flawless also.
the problem comes when it's time to use the sdcard again on the mac. 'disable mass storage' dialogue just hangs, and after 30 seconds or so i just pull the battery. i've tried:
umounting fomr the mac first, then quitting usb mass storage on the nexus
and
quitting mass storage on the nexus THEN umounting on the mac
doesn't seem to matter, it just makes the nexus hang, and a battery pull is required to make it usable again.
any tips ?
also, if this is a common problem, or a bug, please let me know and i'll ask for a thread close/lock/whatever.

use a new kernel, from either wildmonks, intersectraven, or pershoot (in the persianown thread)

I just looked at the three kernels mentioned above and they are all UV/OC kernels. (Maybe I missed something) Is there one that is on .34 that not but has the USB mount/unmount problem fixed?

I've had this exact same problem before, unmounting would always freeze. But I also would experience a hang when copying over a very large file from my computer to the phone via USB. Turns out in my situation the SD card had gone bad (it produced some other weird behaviors when not used with the phone), and using a different card immediately solved my problems.
Not sure if this is the same in your case, but it wouldn't hurt to try a different card and see if you experience the same issue.

Hit up wildmonks, and see if he can make you one. Even with OC, it won't OC unless you set it too. Otherwise it's at 998mhz.

Vista SHIFT Hybernation problems

I don't know if it's my system or if this situation is generalized. When I recover from hybernate my SHIFT doesn't:
1 - recognize my SD (with ReadyBoost enabled), already tried the patch from ms but no luckit doesn't behave properly;
2 - Have difficulties recconeting to internet with modem (BT and WiFi disabled);
3 - No sound I have to enable it after and increase volume;
This were the faults that I noticed right away... Does anybody noticed anything strange also???
Please feedback needed otherwise I'll reformat the device and reinstall it again...
Hi,
I don't use SD. So I haven't got an answer, but have a look around in the forum. There is at least one thread if not more that deal with SD problems.

Hi,
I already saw all posts refering to SD problems and made the changes. Anyway if you see everything I wrote, I've problems in other areas also, after hybernation.
I have the SD card problem, but not wifi or bluetooth> Wifi is connecting automaticaly to any network I throw him.
For the sound, it's usually working, except if I try to change sound settings after resuming. In that case, the control might hang. Going to the computer - manage and confirming the security question helps somewhat restoring it.

I'm restoring the system. Hope this helps... At the end I'll post my experience...
Coming out of hibernation on my shift, I sometimes lose the SD card, but not always. This is with readyboost enabled. I also have problems with the 3g connection, but again, not always. A reboot always sorts it, but that wastes 10 minutes of my life and 10% of my battery power. Gotta love HTC...
You have same difficulties I have. I've experienced that SD card, after coming out of hibernation, you can see it in explorer but if you try to access it explorer hangs and I've to make a hard boot (shut the system with power botton). 3G tends to be difficult to access through vista aftr hiber too, sound problems, etc, etc, etc... let's see if a clean install makes it better, otherwise if I allways have to do a restart there's no point in hiber...
SD missing after sleep/hibernate/re-insert
The "disappearing SD" problem is not just after sleep or hibernate: it can disappear after properly removing and re-inserting the card. Microsoft admits to the problem in XP: the drivers fail to unload when they should, so they fail to re-load on re-start. They distribute a kluge to fix it in XP, but if you tell them the problem also exists in VISTA they play dumb.
SD problems solved
After a long period of discovery I finnally manage to solve the the problem of disappeared or not accessible SD card after hibernation.
What I had to do was stop ReadyBoost service just before entering hibernation state, and start readyboost just after recover for hibernation. For that I have made two shortcuts:
1 - Stop ReadyBoost to run before Hibernation
and the other
2 - Start ReadyBoost to run after hibernation.
Now I can hibernate without any problems... FINALLY.
I'm trying to make a file where this all happens with just one click, as soon as I have it I'll try to upload it here.
The file is here it's a batch file that stop and hibernate and then start ReadyBoost
Please give me feedback about this to know if someone else had benefits with these solution.

Hermes screws up memory card

I've been having an issue with my device. Once every week or so, something happens to my 16 GB SanDisk memory card. Exactly what happens I can't tell you, but it can be stuff from Media Player not beeing able to add files to the library (but plays them fine if you open them manually), to the phone freezing after entering PIN upon start-up. Sometimes it freezes randomly, and I have to remove the SD-card. Whenever this happen, using my card reader and running Vistas error-checking sorta helps it, or if I can isolate a file that causes a problem (not a program, any kind of file) and delete it, it usually works.
But, why does this happen? I never take the card out of the phone, except when trying to fix the errors. I sync over Bluetooth and USB, I've used different ROMs (I think, I've flashed quite a few recently so can't tell for sure), I've used diffrent line-up of programs, but it stills keep acting weird. Any clues? It's quite annoying. I didn't search the forums, since I honestly don't know what to search for. Any clues or search strings are most welcome! Thanks!
Forgot to mention, I'm currently running CRC's latest stable, but, as I said, I don't think that's the problem.
same thiong happened to me
My mem card started showing up files with some weird names, other files were unaccesible, programs stopped responding and the phone would freeze until I took out the mem card. What I id to fix the issue was, took out all the vital info (keep it minimal cuz there might be a corrupted file and we dont want to transfer that one to the phone again. format your memory card using a "low level" format application http://lmgtfy.com/?q=low+level+format+freeware+download+sd&l=1 then pop it back in again and the phome will format it, and transfer your old data back. This happened to me a while back and havnt had a single issue sience the low level thingie. Hopes this helps
I'm afraid this is a common enough problem and has been written about many times. Causes vary from software errors, switching off before all data is written or even physical contacts between phone and card (some evn say different brands of card work better).
If it happens that you see corrupt file names do not continue using the device or open programs or trying to delete data. Imediately perform a soft reset, this can recover (sometimes) the corrupt FAT file and save data.
The inability to save Media Player files to the library is an un-related issue and is a known software issue. You can overcome the issue by deleting the msmetadata file (search this forum for more info). Unfortunately it's something you may have to do fairly regularly.

[Q] EXT4 and windows

So I rooted my Sprint Epic, changed the file system to EXT4 and installed Bonzai4All 2.0.1
It all runs like butter and I get benchmarks around 2000. Nice.
For some reason the external SD card was not recongnized the first couple of times after the install, so I assumed it also formatted the card EXT4, but now (after a couple of times snapping it back in and out) I see the SD card recognized in windows again...
I'm assuming this disk format change is only to the internal memory?
Sorry if this seems like an obvious question.
Your sdcard isn't ext4. You can still transferee with no limitations

So what's the best way to interact with the new EXT4 file system in windows? I need to transfer files constantly to my phone and I would like to write to it.
I'm guessing this issue will start to become more widespread once the Nexus S and other EXT4 phones start to hit the market and users can't access data. At which point we can only hope someone out there would have to make a product that fills that void.
A current solution would be nice though.
Any ideas?

Not sure I am understanding the issue here. The phone mounts under windows exactly the same way it did with RFS. Just plug it in, select the right button in the pop up window on the phone and it shows up as a drive in windows. Copy over whatever you want, unmount it (from the phone) and your set. Am I missing something?
is usb debugging on? i have to turn mine off to get it to connect for file transfers
The issue was that the first couple of times my sd card interacted with my computer, either through the phone or directly plugged, it would not read. At all.
That's when my question was written...
At this point the sd card is recognized with no problem, so it all made sense when that happened.
Thanks so much for helping.

When I'm in storage mode.......

.....connected to my laptop all the apps I have located on my ext SD card disappear which I understand but when my Atrix is unplugged the apps I have stored don't reappear on my home screens.
They have to be manually put back on.
Does anyone know why this is.....it's doing my head in.
I'm running the Alien 4 rom with Faux123 kernel if that matters.
Cheers

I don't understand why people move apps to sd on a phone that doesn't need it.

For the same reason you cant access anything else on the SD card when in storage mode, the OS has to unmount it while the computer has access, thus you cant use anything on it including apps, this is normal.
To the first reply, cause I want to and to the second, read my question again. I said I know why they disappear when connected but don't know why they don't return when the device is unplugged.
Never had the problem on either of my 2 desires and wondered if it was Atrix or maybe ROM specific.
Don't post unless you can help. Thanks.
Ah i missed that part :-(..... In that case no idea never tried it as I have 1.2GB free of app storage.
Do they appear in the apps list?
Tried restarting the phone?
Tried a media scan (not sure if it will pick up apps)
Sounds like your ROM is not scanning the sdcard after remounting it.

No probs Nap and thanks Dennis, tried it mate but no joy.
Looks like I'll just use internal storage for ease from now as it gets boring adding them all back after a while.
Thanks anyway tho
you could always buy the dual mount SD program, best .99c I have spent so far. It allows you to mount and still access the sd on the phone. it is very helpful for me.
I had an issue with my ringtones that are located on storage being jacked up during mounts. the issue would occur when I had a notification, call, text, anything that made a noise that used a custom tone while mounted to a PC. After unmount the notification would either revert to default or choose a completely random tone.
I downloaded dualmount a few months back and that issue was resolved. I havent had to reset my notifications except when I flashed to CM, and I can live with that

Some developers prefer that questions remain separate from their main development thread to help keep things organized. Placing your question within this thread will increase its chances of being answered by a member of the community or by the developer. Thanks for understanding and for helping to keep XDA neat and tidy!
no need for this.
Go to Settings, then Buttons, and there you have it, after options for search key.
SD problem
I have cm11.0-20140627. (I installed the latest version but the phone kept rebooting, so I reinstalled the 27/06 version).
The problem I have is that the phone keeps removing the SD card when it wakes up or when it turns on. Therefore, I have to open the lid, remove the SD card and place it again in the phone. Is this a common bug?
I've tried to format the SD but the problem still remains.

Perhaps it's related to the Wi-Fi. Can you try turning off Wi-Fi, and making sure it does not enable itself for location scanning. Also, if this happens, I'd like logs (the app is on my thread which you can use to get the logs).
sd card swapping
hey ..can you tell me a way of swapping or emulating internal sd card as external
i have a broken sd card slot and the camera features and other feature can't be used without it..

you mentioned something about logs. Do you mean the "data.txt" file?
I guess it doesn't have personal data in it, does it?
If not, I'm sending it right away!

I promised this to someone some time ago, but never implemented it. Actually today's release is a bit experimental on some sides, so if there are issues I will do another one soon, with the swappable storage patch. Things like this (swappable storage) are really useful features, but they break CM's policies and that's why they don't merge this stuff. I will add it to my own builds from now on though .

Yes, the data.txt would be useful. The log could contain sensitive information though, you can check it for any potential usernames, serial numbers and mac addresses. If you want you can also send it to me as a PM, if you're ok with that.
I actually had a similar issue a long time ago, but my SD card was dying and one day the Wi-Fi would not turn on anymore (the Wi-Fi bus and SD card bus are using the same driver, which got confused). You mentioned you were using the 06/28 release, the issue is not present there?

Here's the data.txt.

The issue is present with the 28/06 version, I just had problem with the new ones (the phone kept rebooting with the 07/09 version).
When you have the time to check it, keep in mind that there could be a connection between my problem and wifi tethering ( I think this problem started when I first used wifi tethering).

Thanks.
From the log I can see it fails on resume, possibly because in my ROM the SD card power is turned off and for some reason it fails to react after power is turned on again.
In stock Huawei ROMs they did not do that, which increases power consumption too (in some cases some users reported that without the SD card they'd get double the battery). So I enabled it in my ROM (it's actually enabled by default in Qualcomm development boards too).
I will debug this problem, perhaps it needs a delay when resuming.
Btw, if you have installed the last version, do you still get reboots?

I will install it today. Just to make it clear, is it better to wipe data/cache/dalvik before installing the new rom, after the installation or can I just install it without wiping anything?
After edit:
I installed it without wiping anything. No reboots, it is functional (~1.5 hour).
I will come back with any news. Thanks!!

I think it is due to software conflics.
Will you add cm11's double tap weak to u8800?
Hi Blefish!
The problem with the SD card has reappeared. Now I have the 28/10 version and besides this problem, everything is fine.
I have a bug..
Hi Blefish. I have a bug in latest build (cm11-2014-10-28).
"Import/Export from SIM Card" doesn't work on "Contacts" and I can not import/export contacts from SIM card. This is working previous version.
Thanks. It is great work. A lot thanks.

Is there another "Settings" menu/app?

I think you need to enable Developer options first. Settings->About. Tap the build number 7 times to enable Performance options. Oh, make sure you do not enable KSM, as it breaks camera after using it for some time (only reboot helps). I will remove KSM option in next release.

Found it Wasn't aware of this
Yes, I saw the issue with KSM, not going to enable!
By the way, I found some issues with the ROM, don't know if this is the right place but can't post anywhere else lol
1- Camera doesn't work withou SD card in slot. Crashes. (It should use internal memory in that case shouldn't it?)
2- Sometimes can't turn location (GPS?) completely off, either thru the status bar menu or thru the power widget. Have to go to Settings->Personal->Location and turn it off.
3- Still haven't fully charged with the wall charger (only with USB port from laptop) but seems to drain the battery a lot! Before could last 4 days (oxygen ROM on 2.3.x) but only during the night lost about 60% charge.
Thanks for the great work!
Having Bluetooth working is a major plus
Edit: Sorry, using 20140907...wrong zip file... my mistake!
