Recent OTA update fixing bugs? - Hero CDMA General

I've been reading posts like this one that claim to see performance increases since installing the update.
Anyone else notice any improvements?
Also, what are the chances that if there are improvements they can be implemented into the ROMs we love so much?
As much as I want a perfect 2.1 operating system I don't want to lose my root.

Tango vs. Mango?

Hey guys,
To any of you who updated from Mango to Tango, do you notice any performance improvements?
I don't really need any new Tango features but in case it improves the performance, I'd jump on board.

not really noticed any difference at all to be honest, given that there is no down side to doing it theres no real reason not too, except for going through the hassle of doing it in the first place, even then, ive developed a fairly quick way of doing it including SMS backup, and re installing it also helps keep the number of crap apps down
Thanks, well, since there is no difference, I don't see point upgrading just for the sake of it
Also, there seems to be some battery issues

Is Lollipop really worth upgrading to?

So, Samsung finally released Lollipop for just about every Note 4 variant now but, after reading a lot of people suffering from huge battery drain, overheating and random crashes, I'm just wondering if I should bother updating to lollypop myself.
I'm still on stock 4.4.4 (with a fair amount of mods) and my phone runs exactly how I want it to. The only ever problem I have is sometimes contacts crashes, but it's not even done that for about a week.
What are the advantages (if any) of upgrading to lollipop?
Let's see if you can convince me to part with my very stable and perfectly functional modded 4.4.4.

BOC5 works perfectly fine here and is a lot smoother than any KitKat version that I used prior. If you play a lot of games then chances are you might run into the GPU bug, but other than that I see no problems in going with the newest Android version available. :good:
I got N910C. No root.
These are some facts about KK & LP according to my own experience.
KitKat 4.4.4:
Had volume spike answering bug (mentioned somewhere on XDA),
Had read only SD card problem (due to Android restrictions),
Lollipop 5.0.1:
Solved both above mentioned issues of KK,
Faster and smoother than KK,
No crashes, freezes, hickups, overheating - rock stable,
Better RAM management,
Better or equal battery consumption,
Material design (I love it, somebody else may not)
1-2 second answering ''hello hello'' bug (caller can't hear me 1-2 sec. after my answer). I don't know is anybody else has this bug,
GPU throttling bug (when phone reaches about 50 C some games stutter and benchmarks like Antutu show low results due to lower GPU frequencies)
Everything is perfect except this. This should be fixed ASAP in next update.
Be aware of this and consider eventually upgrade to Lollipop
Just in case: lots of shortcut apps (e.g. pulling down the notification bar!) don't work on Samsung's iteration of Lollipop anymore. That's still one of the biggest issues at least for me!
I have updated my UK ee phone to the German BOC3 and I have to say I'm very impressed with it. I have done a dirty flash and I haven't encountered a single issue. My battery life seems better, the system settings feel cleaner and the general visual tweaks and nice. Looking forwards to the btu
Sent from my SM-N910F using XDA Free mobile app
Experience with 5.01 Lollipop Update, i have had no issues with Lollipop
Lp fixed the Bluetooth stuttering bug for playing music in my car via Bluetooth.
The notifications are great and usually appropriate...
No battery crash or menu problems on Bell.
No hello hello bug I have noticed on Bell carrier

Is it still a good idea to update Android to the newest version?

I originally bought the Nexus 6P because of the fast updates and the greater degree of customization than many other device lines. However, the Nougat and now the Oreo updates are beset by hardware issues that occur after installation. Even when there are fixes, these usually end up compromising on some aspect (such as disabling hardware). This has deterred me and (possibly) many others from going further than Marshmallow and has caused some to migrate towards other phones.
I think that it's great that we even have choices on whether or not to get the latest version of Android, but it is not great knowing that there's a good chance that something will get messed up and that the only ways to remedy said messes is to basically cripple our phones. I am legitimately scared and/or fearful of upgrading to Oreo; however, the various new features are incredibly tempting and it's getting harder to resist doing it.
Please note that I'm not disparaging those who make the fixes to these issues; in fact, those people should be commended for salvaging the Nexii of those afflicted with hardware problems into workable states. It just seems kind of sad, disappointing, or maybe even somewhat depressing that to get the newest Android OS (a main highlight of Nexus), severe compromises must be made.
So, returning to the topic, is it safe/a good idea to upgrade Android to the newest version.?
8.1 fixed a Bluetooth issue introduced in 8.0 for me. If it broke something, I am not aware of it, and I have a lot of Google's stuff (Chromecast, Wear, Homes, Android Auto, etc.).
What do you mean by "cripple" the phone? The issues I've seen with this device are hardware related and haven't been due to software. Either way, unlock the bootloader and you can flash old images if you for whatever reason want to go to an older version.

When Nougat was released. some users reported shutdowns before 0% charge was indicated and for Oreo, BLODs. Note that in both cases, the hardware issues appeared post-update. It may be possible that the software triggered hardware problems. Additionally, when I meant that fixes required 'crippling" the phone, I was referring to the fact that the BIG cores usually have to be disabled; this causes a big performance hit.
It would be nice if people could just revert to a previous version of Android to get rid of problems, except that the issues are known to remain even after downgrading.

If you get BLOD it's a hardware issue and it cannot be fixed by reverting to an earlier version. Only flashing a kernel with a fix can get it working again and once you get BLOD your device is on its last legs until the next bootloop happens and then it's none recoverable. The early shut down is related to battery. My device hasn't been affected by BLOD but it shuts down at 15%. I am trying to find a good battery replacement. Must make sure it's got a thick cable for temp sensor and isn't bad quality or you will suffer the same fate.

As everybody said BLOD is an hardware issue and sure nougat update caused problems (or so we think) but Oreo hasn't caused that much problems. So you should upgrade to Oreo in my opinion.
I'm Now on February Update, the battery and performance is not good.
But on November update the phone is very fast in performance and has the best battery life. After that it's bad.
I cannot roll back without root. I'm not rooted, so yeah i regret doing the last two updates.
I'm planning of installing Lineage OS when they release version 15.
Isn't lineage 15 supposed to be out by now?

Is any OS update proper stable? After 4.5.14 ?

Hi, Friends
I m still on 4.5.14 ( Nougat ), it's not that I haven't tried updating the ram but when I updated ( to 4.5.15 ) i was getting low battery performance, less camera performance and overall it just didn't sound fully baked and stable enough for me to update.
What I need from a phone is :
Stable Run
Great Battery Performance
Good Camera Performance
Any other useful feature are optional that it already has without effecting the beforementioned points.
Now android has released version 10 so i am almost 3 OS ver behind , Can anybody help me to know, Are there any real benefits of updating to latest OS apart from cosmetic changes ? I am an old motorola G user so i had to ask since they have forced us as a user so that we will brick if we go back to previous versions, they had changed something in the booting process ( mix of hardware and software )( i don't have an option to root since i use lots of financial which doesn't work great with rooting etc )
For any one want to update ota without losing root
https://oneplusonestop.wordpress.com/2018/09/09/ota-update-rooted/
Please help me on this ? Is there no Op5 user here ?

There's no Android 10 for oneplus 5.
And the last OxygenOS versions are stable as Nougat. I can't imagine why you should not update to Pie?

Thank you for replying!
I know but i came from using Motorola Phones and they use to have a lot of issues with their updated ROMs plus they have disabled the functionality of rolling back as well so one has to take lots of precautions before updating to the latest roms even though they are available earlier than other manufacturers.
Just wanted to know if the rom is stable enough and didn't issue in normal use. I use lots of financial apps, due to security reasons rooting is a no go for me. So I am just being cautious.
Also, I use the non rooted version of GCam for Photography needs so is that still available with Pie or not ?

Thank you, Just one more question. Will it be easy to roll back to previous ROM ( Nougat ) in case I want to. I heard that since Oreo and in nougat there is some difference due to partitioning. Can I just upload the ROM onto the device and reboot into recovery to go back or I have to make partition myself?
The main thing I want to know is, DO I have to root to rollback or i can do that without rooting?

You can roll back with local upgrade, but that's always risky when downgrading and you have a locked bootloader. I can't recommend this.
Also rolling back from oreo to nougat I can't think of it.

I would think that using banking apps you'd probably want to be on a newer version just for the security updates. This is the main reason I'm sticking to stock these days and just taking ota updates. Stick to pixel or OnePlus or Android one devices etc and you don't need root to get good software. I use Google pay and banking apps, purchase order online so I don't want to mess with rooting anymore except on my old backup phones like my htc one m8 to update it to Oreo from marshmallow.
Even if I could have root and Google pay working then you can't just keep updated by over the air updates as far as I know. I'd spend too much time researching how to install updates and regain root etc while now I just get an update pop up on my phone once every couple of months and tell it to install and wait a couple of minutes and it's good to go again.
I meant to add that I'm on 9.0.9 and I have had no issues with it. Performance is great, Camera is good, battery life is good. I had this phone for 2 years updated regularly from nougat to pie. I dropped the phone in the ocean and had to replace it, used a pixel XL for several months (on Android 10 recently). I bought another used op5 because I needed dual Sims for work. I don't regret it.
There was a choppy scrolling issue that came and went for a little while on pie (my first OnePlus 5 and also this replacement) but it seems to be completely gone now. Either with a recent update or possibly some setting I changed in developer options. Even when it had that issues it loaded everything extremely fast and held everything in ram usually. Battery life has never been an issue for me on this phone. It's better than the pixel XL but a lot and way better than a Galaxy s8. Standby time is really good and screen on time can go over 6 hours. Sometimes I unplug the phone before bed before it's even fully charged (90 percent or so) and go to work the next day and come home with over 70% still at 5pm.
My OP5 went from stable to buggy after my first OTA update. Once I rebooted from the first update my phone started to freeze up and blackout until a forced reboot.
Once I hit 9.0.4 I lost use of my gyro, camera, and GPS. Until I used an Unbrick tool and went back to 8.1 Oreo.
The phone still freezes up, screen blacks out, and LED lights turn a baby blue color until I force a reboot.

That sounds like a hardware problem. Did you not attempt to return the device? If it was a software bug that happened to all of them it would have been talked about extensively here back when this phone was new and still popular.

I apologise for necro-posting
Turned out to be a faulty(corrupt) OTA flash. Rolled back to 8.0 OTA and it went back to normal.

Is Android 10 worth it?

Title says it all...is upgrading to Android Q worth it?
Currently running Sky Dragon ROM and the current build I believe is based off Android 9.0.13. I've been so pleased with it I haven't thought about flashing anything else until I saw we got a stable Android Q build.
I've read plenty of threads where users were having issues flashing and just GETTING to Android 10 on the 6t. Nevermind the issues I've seen with people who are on 10 with apps misbehaving, bugs, etc.
Just looking for honest mini reviews of the 6t's latest OOS experience before I embark on the journey of getting there.
So, those of you who have made the jump, is it really worth it?
Thanks in advance!
-Pain
There is no question of worth it or not, Pie support (security especially) is now dropped, you won't have a choice if you want to keep an up-to-date and secure device.
And problems reported only concern a minority a people. And now there is a fully working TWRP for A10.
I'd say it is worth it. There are many new features which make using the phone very convenient. I haven't faced any issues with the ROM itself, just some times magisk prompt won't appear when an app requests root. ROM is stable. Also installed radioactive kernel now its running even better. I clean flashed android 10, it is always better to clean flash such major updates.
In my experience, I have a stock T-Mobile variant, converted to international version. And updated to A10 and didn't last a week without wanting to revert back. All the bugs reported in other threads all happened to me. From random reboots (just twice happened), fingerprint animation staying on after unlock, some lag on the screen when scrolling, the loss of the Play store certification along with the GPay because of this. I just decided to revert back. Downloaded the full wipe downgrade which kind of soft bricked the phone but nothing the MSM tool wouldn't fix and now I'm back on 9.0.17. I'll just wait for a more stable release. For me at least I'd say it's not worth it yet...
I wanna say wait for the official OTA release. I see a lot of people are complaining about issues with the new update. But there are also people who are full satisfied with the update with no issues. If you are using your OP6T as a daily driver I would say wait for a week or two more to see if the new update drops officially and do that.
Definitely worth it. I've had one random slowdown (resolved with a reboot) and a single crash reboot where I got stuck on the boot animation and had to hard boot, but they're the only negatives. There's a bug with the haptic vibration on key presses being stuck on maximum, but the benefits are many - great battery life, apps open much faster, fingerprint reader and general UI responsiveness is much better.
For me it's worth it especially since the baked in swipe to go back into the os, I've been using 3rd party apps for that functionality since early days...
I think it is worth it specially once I figured out how to get root. I don't have twrp installed and not sure I need it. Battery is good and I really like the launcher. No need to install any themes at this point.
EDIT
Just flashed Twrp with Magisk works perfect.
