Just did a scratch test, with video. - EVO 4G General

Evo 4g scratch test
I suppose I should put in the disclaimer that the phone is being returned to sprint because the screen has risen up from the bezel, and that is the only reason that I did the scratch test.
I forgot to mention that I did the same thing to the back camera, but it lasted all of 2 seconds and it scratched.
For the life of me I can't figure out why they would not use the same glass as the screen.

Nice to see the screen toughness.

I'd be surprised if any of those objects DID scratch the glass, seeing as how glass is harder than most metals.
What you have to REALLY look out for is abrasive materials like sand. This applies to all owners of devices with glass screens. That stuff will leave your screen looking horrible.

Ya, but it seems most people are more concerned about the keys and change in there pocket, not so much sand.

That's a bit strange; keys aren't very sharp to begin with, so how would they scratch a glass screen? If anything, a trip to the beach is going to be much scarier than carrying your keys along with your Evo in the same pocket.

You must smoke more crack than Jimmy Crackhead to be taking your phone to the beach.
There ain't no way in hell I am taking my phone to the beach.

Sand, dirt, and a mixture of crap in your pocket is more likely to scuff the screen than anything else. Hence, I always recommend cloth pouches for touchscreen phones.

Thanks I've been getting sick of telling people that it doesn't need a screen protector.

It is still a good idea to get a screen protector on your phone.
It's scratch resistant, not scratch proof.

Having the same issue as you Roman, along with the light bleed from the button below the screen. Talking to my company rep now so I can get it replaced.

I think more phones are going towards the scratch proof screens, the Cliq might have not had it, but I believe the motorola Droid does. I think eventually most devices will have scratch proof screens.

So we have Gorilla glass?

Gorilla glass my arse

My phone has 3 scratches on it. I can't see 2 unless I really look, so they don't bother me, but the 3rd one is blatanly there. I thought gorilla glass was supposed to be ale to handle everyday things, like a pocket? My hero has never got a visible scratch while the screen is on, even after I dropped it in the subway tracks (the buttons got peeled off though lol). Wats the deal

Who puts their new 400 dollar phone into their pocket with loose change, keys and other abrasive things? If you want to be so reckless with it, then get a screen protector. I have mine cozy in a delicious leather case when I am traveling and the screen is absolutely flawless. I dont expect a screen to survive having metal objects jabbed into it with pressure, no matter what animal they name the glass after.

I don't know. I think a KingKong glass would definitely be able to withstand a tiny little sharp puny key. C'mon now

Who said he had anything sharp, metal, or otherwise in his pocket. I suggest you reread the OP. You don't get to make things up so that your argument seems to make sense. That's what kids do in elementary school. I keep my Epic in my pocket and don't have a scratch anywhere on it. Now, I suppose by your (flawed) reasoning the Epic is impervious to "loose change, keys and other abrasive things."
Well this thread certainly has got off on the wrong foot lol, ya I have a few tiny scratches on my screen as well, not super noticeable but I know they are from being in my pocket with change and pens. Not a big deal as long as they are small, but it definitely made me consider a screen protector and a new pocket arrangement.

Heres a qoute from edge767 on android central
Sapphire will only scratch if you scratch it with an object that is higher on the Mohs Hardness Scale (or if you take a softer object put push the atoms beyond their elasticity and plasticity into failure) like a metal hammer used with force.
There are few common objects you would normally have in your pocket that is harder than glass (which is 6 to 7 on the Mohs Hardness Scale). Unless you walk around with a pocket full of topaz, sapphires, and diamonds, you should be okay.
The real danger is dust and small grains of sand that can contain quartz (which, at 6 to 7 can be harder than your glass) that gets between your finger and the glass. That is where most scratches will come from, not from keys

There's a few flaws with your ASSumptions.
1)don't ASSume that just because YOU paid $400 for a phone, everyone does.
2)I NEVER have my phone in a pocket with ANYTHING else. A habit from my blackberry days. So again, don't ASSume that just because YOU have your phone rubbin up against metallic objects, everyone does.
3)why should I have to waste money on a leather case when gorilla glass is supposed to be able to handle the little things?
The statement about the dust particles made more sense, but I don't think I've touched nor been near quartz, and if I have, it couldn't have been enough to weaken the glass to thepoint of a clearly visible scratch on the screen

Lol when I was buying the phone, the best buy lady was asking me if I wanted a screen protector and I told her no cuz I'm finally gonna have a phone with gorilla glass, but we see how that ended up.
My conclusion is that gorilla glass is ass and that tft coating or whatever htc put on the hero to protect against smudges is also able to withstand scratches easier lol

Hey that rhymes
Small particles which are harder than gorilla glass can stick to either the glass surface or the plastic surface of your water bottle. Accidentally rub them into the glass with the water bottle and you can definitely scratch the glass.
Gorilla glass absolutely requires a screen protector.
As for the return, most places just make sure the serial number matches and the parts are in the box (cables, charger, etc). Never had anyone look closely at the display. Though if they saw it, I'm sure they would reject the return.
any suggestions? ive thought about saying there is a defect in the software/hardware...to do an exchange..or purchasing one off contacting and switching?!
help me people..HELP MEE
If it's not noticeable when you're using it I'm sure you'll forget about it. No need to lie.
Calm down and take a few days to think about if you really care that much.

And there are other people who have scratched such screens. It can happen. So why bother risking it when a screen protector can be had for under $10? Well maybe under $20 for a tablet.
i agree with the others: don't take it back to the store just because of 2 tiny scratches. With time, you will forget it. If it's not really visible when using, why stress? It's hard for you to go to sleep knowing that your xoom is not being used with a scratch on it?
I remember when I scratched the hell out of my 42-inch plasma tv when I was moving a few years ago. I was so upset, especially at the guy who let the door close on the screen. Once the tv was turned on, couldn't see the scratch, so I stopped worrying and my stress levels went down dramatically

Whatever you try be careful as you may cause more damage. Personally, I would try a small amount of toothpaste on a microfiber cloth. This method completely removed a scratch on my Epic 4G (Gorilla glass).
I'm actually pretty surprised by this.
My Samsung Vibrant has gorilla glass and has taken a serious pounding from not even caring about the keys in my pocket to actually falling face down on the sidewalk.
This is why I got insurance on my Xoom from BB.
it was a PLASTIC poland spring bottle.
im so sick to my stomach over the purchase amount and how fast it scratched. its disheartning...i mean, i have a nexus S now too (dropped 524 for it) and it doesnt have anything...
granted..i left the bottle in my duffle bag with my xoom, but seriously...nothing else in there..i guess i am freaking out but i dont get it.
i know its a low life move but im within my 14days return policy and maybe i can get away with making up false claims of software issues without the technician being too penetrating in operating it...and if so..ill walk away, head in lap, and accept the scratches.
ill post the damn pictures of it right now

Good luck man, I'd be rright there with you if that happened to me. It is your own idiocracy for not having a screen protector on I left the plastin on that said where the volume and whatnot on my xoom for two days till I got a screen protector.
But either way I'm rooting for you, let me know how things turn out.
And for the haters I know its his fault and it really don't effect anything significant, but can you honestly say you wouldn't try the same thing? I mean its not like he had it in a bag with a handful of coins, it was a water bottle, imagine that being you. Trying to be all healthy by drinking water only for it to turn on you and chomp up your new multi hundred dollar device's screen.
Now the real story, you left it in a duffel bag unprotected? I did that once with my kindle and the screen cracked. What do you expect will happen?

Not sure if you can, I yanked mine off so fast, it was like I was 5 again again on Xmass morning. I have never used screen protectors on anything and frankly I have never got a scratch, I think they are huge ripoffs. The screen on the Xoom is very tough gorilla glass.
I WOULD recommend the Motorola case that snaps around it, some people complain that you can't charge it with it closed, but that is very minor. Otherwise it's a good case. You will want a case not only to protect against droppage but to protect the screen and make it overall less slippery when you carry it (often under your arm). It also kind of Hides it, so to most people it just looks like a little black notepad, which keeps a lot of people from asking what it is.
Dan
you can use it. I kept mine on for a while yesterday until I was ready to install my screen protector. Only downside is it feels real gritty but it works fine

That is the reason I bought InvisibleShield, the same reason I got it for my phone. It helps to reduce glare and fingerprints.
I kept all the plastic on mine for about five days until my skinomi came. I didn't want a single scratch on my baby while i waited for the full carbon fiber/ screen protector to arrive! Worked fine with plastic. Edges started to peel back after a couple days, that's it.
I've had mine on since day one. Figure when it starts to come off I'll just take it off and do without. Not worried about scratches, just seemed like it'd allow me to be lazy about cleaning for a while if I kept it on over the screen.

I'm sure you know most techies (and clumsy people?) like keeping their gadgets as perfect as they can. If that means covering it in damage-resistant plastic, then why not? I've never been one for screen protectors... but I definitely see the point. Full body protectors also seem very useful. You can bump into things, drop your device on the ground, put it in bags full of other stuff, throw it around (not horribly, of course) and still not have to worry about damage.
Its much better than letting that one little scratch you tried so hard to avoid get on your device. Unless you just don't care. However, after paying 100+ dollars I would surely care. Can't have expensive things that look like trash.
My original plastic is still on the face, after 5 days of use I finally took the other plastic off.
I'm having a real hard time deciding whether to put a screen protector on this thing or not. For the first time in a decade of using the stupid things I think I'm going to try going without one. I'll be heartbroken if I end up with a gash though. This is my first Gorilla Glass product so it's a foreign concept to me.

gorilla glass scratscratches surprizingly easy! And I never used to care about screen orotectors and stuff until I started reselling my gadgets on eBay. I usually get my tech on sale and end up getting same as I paid for it back with a well preserved gadget and a good listing. Plan on doing the same with my 25% off xoom in a couple months or year when the next google experience tablet is released...

No offense to anyone. I know my ancestors were immigrants too!
It's actually a compliment. When you come to America with nothing, you tend to take really good care of your stuff
But yea, us 3rd, 4th, etc gen Americans just say f'-it whatever, let me enjoy my things!

A bit rude perhaps but that's hardly trolling. I don't understand anyone in this thread either. I like to enjoy my electronics free of plastic head on right when I get them

Yep, same here but I guess I've developed a different kind of "analness" eg, instead of keeping the plastic on the leather couches, I clean and condition them every 3mos (with Lexol).
Instead of putting a screen protector on my Evo, it always flies solo in my pocket everywhere we go (keys & nicknacks go in the other) and slide it in with the screen facing my thigh
Not sure I can fit the Xoom in my pocket but it'll stay in the safety of the home most of its life.

that's a special post for people like the OP. I wrote it back in may of 2009.

Screen scratch test fail

hi chaps,
i recently got myself an evo 4g and was contemplating a screen protector. then i came across some videos on YouTube proclaiming just how tough the gorilla glass (?) on the evo is and withstood all kinds of torture.
anyway, in the spirit of finding out for myself, i tried the same thing to my phone and i definitely suggest not trying it yourself. The screen most definitely does scratch. Now we now.
Link below to see the video and pics.

i already knew it scratched hell iv even broke the screen on my first evo so yea my keys have scratched my screen however you can see it. it doesnt make it look bad or aweful in anyway just notice it under certain angles so kind of dumb to ruin yours to do this test could have just asked if anyone had scratchs on their screen and to take pictures
Ok, so, you went from "I should get a screen protector!" to "I'm gonna take a razor blade to this *****!" in the span of a youtube video?!
Jesus man, I hope to god you don't find out about failblog or else your hospital bills are going to be ridiculous.
ha ha!!
nah man... i was considering a screen protector. Always had one on my HD2 and Touch Diamond. But then i got to reading about how tough the glass was.. and then the YouTube videos. I though to myself, this is brilliant., no screen protector needed.
I initially tried with just the corners and there were no scratches, after which i figured let me catch the main test on video just for sake of it.
now, with what i did to my Evo, the outcome should have be the same as those other chaps who posted on Youtube, but i got a couple of scratches which i took pictures of.... what i proved was that its highly unlikely those Evos came away undamaged or theres something fishy going on.
Btw, im probably not going to use a screen protector. If anything, maybe a slip case. I mean, after all that coin scratching, scicssors scoring and blade cutting, it only came away with two scratches. The second was small enough that i found it hard to take a picture of. The one i could take a picture of is noticeable if viewed from a particular angle. Looking at it head on in normal use is not noticeable.
Plus if it does get that bad, the screens go for $20 bucks on ebay...
but then again, there is the question of resale though.... hhhmmm.
Anyway, i looked on the net and all i got was confused answers, take it from me chaps this is definitive. And ive got the scratch to prove it.

Haha. You said chaps....... I remember the glass on my *gasp* blackberry storm being tough. I scratched it with everything and never once noticed anything. Never tried with my evo. Just too sexy of a phone

Some times the cheap ones work the best screen protector wise check out extreme guard or few others eBay there cheap and work well. I'm using a Kraken case to keep my new phone mint.
I have a watch that has a saphire crystal that is supposed to be unscratchble. I used to demo it when drunk rubbing the face on concrete. Well one night it actually did scratch, and it was a biggin. Luckily Rado replaced it for me free of charge. Lesson learned.

btw, which screen protector has the most glass like feel to it in use?
ive consistently come across posts complaining about zaggs tacky feel and yellowing... so, which reigns as king of the hill of screen protectors?
i wish i could remember what mine was on the hd2. feels pretty nice and no discoloration.
Hmmm failblog sounds interesting......
I.... wouldn't have tried this. XD

now that i have, you will never have to.
its just something i was really curious about. the youtube videos seemed so unlikely but technology does advance and i wanted to personally put it to the test.
no regrets.
its just a phone. nothing last forever.
and as a mate put it, i go through mobile devices faster than he updates his facebook status.

I thought the gorrila glass was pretty tough until i bought some earrings and i had scratches all over my phone
I use my phone naked since there's no way I'm putting a case on such a huge phone.
It's stood up really well, actually. I've dropped it on concrete a few times and the only noticeable signs are some indents on the plastic around the outer rim.
Though if you look closely, there's little chips missing from my screen. You could definitely scratch it pretty badly without too much effort in my opinion.
My phone has a zagg screen protector on it and I don't have any yellowing issues... however if your fingers are oily or wet (duh most peoples are ) then yeah it can have a tacky sort of feel. I usually just do a quick wipe of my index finger on my jeans before I touch my screen.

i get the case thing. i had an otterbox defender series on my phone with out much trouble til it became to stretched to hit the buttons correctly kinda disappointing i guess im glad i used a gift card to try it out. The screen protectors that came with are not bad but my phone is back to being completely naked ( oh noeesss!! ) but it seems to be fine.
glass wise no i wouldn't of tried this carrying this no shalantly in my pocket has shown its wear on the screen from random things in my pocket even though i "try" to keep it in its own pocket
Thank you OP for test and results, this answers some questions

stones in earring i would expect are much harder than the glass of the screen and would undoubtedly scratch.
