This is a total noob question, so feel free to hit me.
I really like this Phone.apk from the N1. It works just fine on my phone, but when you bring up the dialpad in a call, the last row is slightly covered up (it was obviously designed for a higher resolution phone). It's not a huge deal, because you can still press the buttons. I was going to fix it with apktool but simply resigning the file causes it not to work anymore. Does anyone know how to fix this? I didn't think files in system/app needed to be signed.
hey i know this doesnt answer your question,
but i was able use the youtube.apk from the Evo on my unrooted eris
how come i cant use this on my phone as well?
it just says, application not installed
I guess the answer to my question is this is just a plain system file which is open source so I should not need apktool. Since it was so different, I thought it was custom.
To answer the previous post, you cant install this file. It has to be pushed or flashed since it requires replacing the original system file which requires root access.
I can look into resizing some things for you, but I'm wondering, how did you get this to work on your phone?
I pushed it to system/app and it worked when I made a cal, but as soon as i got a call, it fc'd and I lost my signal.

It works great on CE. No problems. I'm only running 1.0 right now, though.
EDIT: Chevelle1768 found a working copy with the buttons correctly spaced in darchstar's Darchdroid v2.6.5. It works awesome. I pushed both Phone.apk and Contacts.apk to my phone. Just don't do it while your phone is actually on. Flash it in recovery. IMO, it's a much better dialer than the other stock one. Don't try this with Sense, though. I'm not sure what would happen.

hmmm... I pushed the phone and contacts apk as as soon a s I did my signal went dead. Even if I try *228 I get an error : "Not Registered on a Network"
I'm running Senseless 1.0
Phone.apk is not what you think it is. It is not the dialer.
Well, ok, it handles the in call experience. Contacts.apk I think is what actually contains the dialer. In any event, the interface that this Phone.apk file has is better. Instead of having to tap your menu key to bring up in call actions (ie. mute, bluetooth, end call, add call, etc ...) all of the options are right there on the screen already. It even has a button to show/hide the dialpad. And the dialpad does not just spring up like the app drawer, it appears on the screen above the buttons.
I'm not sure which ROMs this will work on, but it definitely works on CE. It may work on other Cyanogen based ROMs as well.
Here is a screen shot in case anyone is wondering.

yes but how come i was able to overwrite the youtube app on my phone then?
If you're not rooted, that means you have Sense which this does not work with anyhow. If you somehow managed to install this without root, you would brick your phone for sure.
I want that dialer on my Eris!!! I've been searching for a way to do this for weeks but have come up empty. Will this work on Evil Eris since it has some Sense components still?
So which file did you install that was spaced correctly, can you link to it? Can you also post the contacts .apk? Also, Can you please tell me how to "push" it to the phone, is that the same as flashing?
Sorry for n00b questions but I'm desperate for this dialer!!!

Check my third post. There is a link to Darchdroid. This looks like it only works on Cyanogen based ROMs.
Do this in recovery so your phone does not have a fit.
Code:
adb remount
adb push Phone.apk /sdcard/Phone.apk
adb shell
# mv /system/app/Phone.apk /system/app/Phone.bak
# cp /sdcard/Phone.apk /system/app/
# reboot

Build-Script
Linux Only!
******************
!!!THIS IS SEPARATE FROM ROM!!!
-------------------------
Will only change the system folder YOU modified into system.sqsh
It is a pretty simple straight forward script that does what is says. First click on script and then click display, then on the first line put the dir of the ported system folder: like so
1
example
Code:
cd /home/jamezelle/desktop/hero
next on the second to last line
2
Code:
#put your login name after chown
sudo chown jamezelle ./system.sqsh
ie jamezelle
3
Make sure you use Run in terminal
if not root terminal will ask for password, dont worrry it doesnt save it or anything
ver 2
now tells you what its doing!!!! also will atempt to make directory /mnt/system if not already created
Does anyone find the Build-Script useful??
Disclaimer: i am not responsible for anything if you use this!
but it does save time !!!!!!!!!
If it doesnt execute, right click>properties>permissions tab>check 'allow executing file as program'
I Hope this helps some of you
My first released rom is up! fast and stable thanks zen, maxisma and drizzy
i was looking at that the other day. looks nice.
I'm confused about the whole build-script thing. I'm supposed to download your system.sqsh, extract it, run your build script on it which will convert it to ext2, then back to squashfs again?
Or have you just included the build script as a completely separate tool that we don't actually need to run on your system.sqsh?

It takes a while to start up but it does go through using 320x480... really nice looking ROM... although I still have the same issues I had with the other Hero ROM's - 3+ rings before the phone actually rings.
Yeah it took about 15 mins to boot up...no data img needed. Looks GREAT and everything works very well. Smooth and quick. Easily on of my favs. Good work. Thanks!
i see i'll give it another try again then. thx.

XDA,
Just wanted to know how can I, we add themes to our Android builds. For example, this UltraLinx Desire Theme Thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=736987
I currently have Metamorph, but nothing is working for me. Just wanted to know if anyone is able to add custom themes and how.
misleading title, you shouldve put [Q] instead of [How-to]
but i belive i read that Metamorph does not work on the HD2.

Wrong. Metamorph works for me, but check for each theme their compatibility.
For example, the metamorph theme often need for modding the toolbar, that you have cyanogen (shubcraft hd2 roms for example)
Changing battery icon often didn't need anything special and should work.
For exemple on my shubcraft build :

It can be tricky to know what works and doesnt on our distro, so always make a complete titanium backup before, in case your system doesnt boot anymore.

Change the title if you want more people to help you... I thought this was a how to...
I will be posting a how-to on my site soon...
In the meantime, for system themes: simply replace the the drawable-hdpi in framework-res.apk/res with the one from the theme you want. use adb push to put back into the phone.
On my build, since there's no recovery mode where we can safely change system files in use, I had to reset my email accounts and wallpaper settings after this...
no biggie...

Thanks fellaz
metamorph does work
I use the donator version and was able to successfully use the zen theme and a few more themes
however, I have been receiving issues with installing others (eg nextTang for example)
What I've been doing/done that hasn't worked is
I create a file in the root directory of my storage card, make the system folder and copy the theme files to the system (eg app, lib, res)
but my android gets a reboot sequence. It never boots after I apply the theme
I should clarify this is on shub 1.4b cm6 rc3 I tried that method
I also tried editing the htcupdate_leo.tar.gz in which the system file is in (copying the files from there) but I can't boot afterward. The boot splash reloops
any help is super appreciated
edit pongster where in the heck is your site????
Been tryingt to change the ugly stock sense theme all day without luck.
Tried metamorph even the pro version, then to replace files in root framework also creating framework folder in android build folder but nada, the phone will not boot after these tries. Kinda getting the feeling im not getting the right themes. Using darkstones latest.
Any links and howtos on successful theme installs?

with darkstones ROM's and builds you will need to delete the .odex file and the file you are about to push over before you can get it to work right. so in short the steps needed would be.
edit your theme to your liking
adb shell rm -r nameoforiginalfilestillonphone.apk /location/of/file
adb shell rm -r nameoforiginalfilestillonphone.odex /location/of/file
adb shell push nameoffileyouthemed.apk /location/you/deleted/from
adb shell reboot
this should work, but dont blame me if it doesnt.
i take no responsibility. this is simply what works for me when working with builds that have not yet been de-odexed
framework-res.apk does not seem to have a matching odex file. All the jar files have it but not apk.
ill give it a shot anyway.
no luck...
did however find out that placing the framework-res.apk on storage/android/root/system/framework does load it upon boot (saved my last crashed build by placing the original framework-res.apk there).
however have tried several framework-res.apk files from different themes... all of them crash my froyostone buid at the moment....sux :-(

So the first thing I did when I got home from work is root my Thunderbolt and create a backup of a fresh wipe of Thunderbolt stock.
First off:
Android OS: 2.2.1

ROM Name: 1.12.605.6
Rooted (Unsecured boot.img): Yes
Rooted (Superuser.apk + su): Yes
Busybox Installed: Yes
Nano text editor installed: Yes
/system/framework deodexed: Yes
/system/app deodexed: Yes
ROM will wipe data: Yes
Second:
I have tested it does work in its entirety. I had to remove the lines where it flashed boot.img but that is still in the .zip it just doesn't do anything with it since that code in the script it throws errors but without it flashes fine.
Third:
This is completely stock so it does contain the bloat. You can remove it as you see fit using Root explorer or freeze them with titanium backup.

Sorry guys for leaving you all hanging. I do have a newer .zip to flash but it doesn't have any of the bloatware (CityID etc) and has some google apps that are on market (Except for quicksearch because it stops the search button from working) to /data/app.
I will upload that later if you like .

Deodexed in a sense means you can edit and change the files as you like allowing custom figures, images, and animations in place of the stock. It basically allows for people to completely customize rooms to make the run and look as they like. Odexed is completely opposite and you would know a rom is odex because there are .odex files next of ever .apk in the system/app/ folder. You cannot change anything in a odex rom. The completely stock rom is odexed.

I think ur 7 months or so late.
Sent from my ADR6400L using XDA App
I discovered this as I was following someone else instructions that didn't quite work and then messing up my phone to where my "com.android.phone" was failing but I was able to find the way for it to so I do not take full credit for this at all and if this has been known I do apologize. This mod does require root explorer (or similar app) and you need to be rooted.
1a. open root explorer and go to system/etc/motorola/com.android.phone/defaults.xml
1b. Long old "open in text editor" change "" to true
2a. Back out to root of phone then data/data/com.android.phone/shared_prefs and repeat step "1b" on "_has_set_default_values.xml" and " Settings.xml"
2b. Make a copy of " com.android.phone_preferences.xml" within that same folder
2c. Open copy file in text editor and repeat step "1b"
2d. Change file name of copy to " com.android.phone_preferences.xml.bak"
3a. Reboot phone
Now when you go into settings>wireless & networks>mobile networks you will be able to select whether you want 2G, 3G, or automatic which selects 4G. If anyone has trouble or anything PM me and I'd be more than happy to walk you through.
Oh and this should work on froyo and GB
*********************************
Looks like this does open the ability to select 2G or 3G selecting either or does nothing. I will continue to look into these files to see if I can make this work
*********************************
I got this far but now Im stuck. The selection can be made but the actual band change isn't occurring. If anyone much have some insight let me know and I'll update the OP.

Since the power control widget is a built in app this tweak unfortunately does not affect it. And since my knowledge is nowhere near a devs I wouldn't be able to make a rom with a widget that supports this mod.

Hi, I have already changed its. But when I reboot the phone. All file in data/data/com.android.phone/shared_prefs are return to the original.
Can you suggest to me for solve this?
Thanks,
Sorry guys I just edited my instructions. You need to edit the .bak file for "com.android.phone_preferences.xml" because the system auto resets to the .bak file for this one so you're tricking it into reseting into the modded file

I too struggled a lot to find how to enable this and i installed navalynt's πCRUST v0.3 rom couple of days ago which had this feature enabled, so maybe it has been mentioned somewhere. Anyway, thanks for sharing!
It works on atrix 2.
Does this has permanent effect?
Thanks
I recently took a screenshot that revealed another background window behind a warning message window that says "Hello world, PM EasyView!"
Is this some kind of malware? I tried scanning my phone with Lookout Security and it did not detect anything suspicious.
It all began when all of a sudden my stock 2.2.2 Defy's Task Manager kept showing popup messages telling me that my Hotmail app is running for too long and is consuming memory. This never happened before, ie. Task Manager app showing warning messages about apps running for too long. I suspect a malware infestation. Please advise.

If you are scared that you are infected by malware the only "safe" thing to do is a full data wipe.
You dont have clockworkmod installed do you? Would be helpfull to have a full copy of the system to analyze it. I think clockworkmod would be a perfekt method to get a copy of the whole system.
sorry i don't know how to solve this. maybe it's time for you to change to some other ROMs...

Well not exactly scared but I was just wondering about the origin of that "Hello world" message. "PMEasyView"? I wasn't able to find any app or developer by that name among the apps installed on my phone. Just was wondering if anyone here knew thats all. I rooted my phone using SuperOneClick, does it install Clockworkmod too? Or do I have to do it separately?

I did install CM 7.1(2.3.7) but I didn't quite like it..I mean don't get me wrong..CM 7.1 is awesome but the ADW launcher kept crashing on me, something was eating up the battery way to fast and this is weird but I found that the sound quality(headphone and speaker) had actually deteriorated..maybe I didn't get some settings right but anyways I decided to roll back to the Motorola stock 2.2.2 froyo JRDNEM_U3_3.4.3-36-1.7 and wait until CM9 was out.
Thanks for the replies guys..really appreciate you taking the time.

If adw doesn't work for you, you can download another one from the market. I use go launcher and it works without any problems and damn fast. You should give it a try.

Well it's typical behavior of mallware - I dont have information, that stock task manager will inform you, that some process is running more than x minutes ... try wipe to factory settings and you'll be sure.
Rooting doesn't install Clockworkmod. You only get superuser after rooting. Install 2nd-init and you get Clockworkmod.
You should start using Droidwall and AVG antivirus pro. Try limit the data freedom running in the background.
Thanks for the replies guys. I think I'll wait for CM9. I do have Droidwall installed and I've scanned my phone thoroughly with Lookout Security but nothing was detected. Is it possible that the firmware posted here, the 2.2.2 India one is somehow infected?

I took another screenshot of the supposed malware today, this time without the task manager message. I was able to dismiss the task manager message by pressing the search key somehow.
I have seen exactly that same message today. I thought I have been fairly careful about Malware. However, there was an update that was installed from marketplace today.
I wonder if it is possible to look at an update history.

Is the message window in your case appearing under the exact same circumstances as mine? Which ROM are you using? And also if its possible could you do an inventory of the all the apps installed on your phone, then perhaps we can pinpoint the source. Thanks for the reply.
