What do you do with your EVO that you find "Really Cool." - EVO 4G General

I ask this question because I've run into a couple of apps that I just find really cool, apps that I look at and say "wow, that's awesome that I can do this with my phone."
One of them is PhoneMyPC, remote logging into my home computer ($10 app).
The other one is of course WiFi tether (either paid or rooted).
I also really dig FiOS Mobile apps. Two apps, one that allows you to monitor, schedule recordings, and delete recordings on my home DVR from anywhere. The other allows me to control my home DVR via wifi. Why is this cool? I ran a second cable from my DVR to my other TV, so now I can control it while the DVR is at the other end of the house, no need for an IR repeater! And I can screw with my wife while she's watching TV.
What have you found that has made you go "Damn, that's cool!"

Having trouble of thinking of things exclusive to my Evo...but I <3 Android:
Accessing a terabyte of video, music and pictures on my home server through Orb to the Evo is pretty awesome!
Real time video streaming to my Qik stream is very cool.
Real time monitoring of my OBDII stats on the phone through the torque app. I use an OBDII bluetooth module that I got for $30 from Hong Kong. The module is a permanent fixture in my S2000 (install and forget). Very useful if you are into hypermiling, shows current MPG, average MPG and every other stat your OBD sensors feed out.
Droidlive radio app has replaced the crappy Las Vegas radio stations we have out here. I stream this to my Sony Xplod deck's bluetooth.
Google Navigation is honestly the best thing ever. I have give a Garmin nav unit that I haven't used since I got 2.1 on my old Hero.
My girlfriend and I stalk each other with the Latitude app in Google maps. Fun and useful for seeing what your friends and family are up to.
Slingbox Mobile Player will be added to my favorite features this summer, full cable lineup on my phone!
Gmote allows me to use my phone as a track pad on my media server. Very useful and makes an awesome wireless mouse.

i didnt want the evo at first due to its size, i came from an htc diamond to this and what i loved about my diamond was its compact size.. well after getting the evo the size is one of the things that i love about this phone, not to mention not having a lag with finger swipes, everything is instant and precise.. i love this phone.. ANDROID ANDROID ANDROID!!! the apps that i use are as follows;
backgrounds: for some custom backgrounds
driodbox: for accessing my dropbox, like this better than the official dropbox app
camera zoom fx: neat little camera app
itrackmma: a must have for true mma fans, schedules and fightcards for events
jogtracker: creates a detail maps of my jogging speed and routes
listen: for listening to my podcasts
rootbooter: boots into recovery, but i still have to click the recovery files

another Las Vegan? Seems like we are taking over XDA, lol.
IMO, one of the coolest things i can do on the phone is to have what the camera sees as my wallpaper. LWP FTW!!

Beyond the 'look' of the device, the sheer functionality, the fact that it does what I need it to do without lag...that is 'really cool'.
The EVO is what a smartphone is supposed to be.

HAHA yeah, vegas has some really crappy radio stations. I always just listened to NPR and my ex was always trying to find something to listen to because NPR was too 'boring', she never really found anything else.
I do like vegas's NPR station better then phoenix's.

I think the ability to video chat my mother who I haven't seen in years and lives in a different country is "really cool." (From the phone.)
Hi mom!

Playing highly polished games like Radiant on the Evo is nothing short of breathtaking. Once you've done that, there is no going back to a smaller device.

Where did you get this? That would be awesome.

Not all of these are uniquely EVO, but they are awesome none the less. (some are repeats too, but they amazed me)
Using the phone as a trackpad over wifi. Link
Google Voice Mail. The one thing I hated more than anything else over the past decade was checking voice mails. Now its a pleasure.
Latitude
Key Ring helped make my wallet thinner, in a good way. Less club cards to carry. Link
Keeping track of my cars gas mileage and service. Link
Being able to say out loud "Navigate to Frozen Yogurt" and being lead to the nearest place to kill my craving.
Mint is really handy and is already helping me save money. It is ALL your financial information in 1 place. Link
Google Translate is a lot of fun when you use a language it can actually speak back out loud. Link
For me the biggest deal is that this is the first time I have been able to browse the web on something other than a computer, and have it be enjoyable. The other night I sat in bed browsing for at least 1.5 hours completely comfortable. I would say its like 70% of the desktop experience, which is pretty good. Even on the HTC Incredible I found it a bit of a pain to browse. Love that 4.3" screen!

I'm using HomePipe. Like it better than Orb. Can use it to transfer any files, not just music/video/pics.

I think one of the coolest things is
Finding a song using shazam,
downloading the full song for free from MP3 download,
email it to someone else, or search for any video on youtube and download it directly to the phone.

About the obdii adapter: It lagged about 2 milliseconds on my hero, I was testing it out with the Evo today and the lag was about 1 millisecond. I paid $30 for the bt obdii adapter on ebay including shipping.
The best app for it its torque, plus it is free. It even allows for resetting trouble codes.

Seriously the thing that is most incredible to me is being able to use Skype video call to people while walking around using my phone.

My favorite app on the EVO so far has been Google Sky. It really uses all of the technology available to produce something so simple.

I love my Nexus. Here's one example of why...

So I was rebuilding my HTPC (new PSU and graphics card, and a fresh win7 install for anyone interested) and I realised that the driver disk for my wireless card was in the loft, two storeys from my position in the lounge! What a disaster!
So instead of trudging all the way up two (that's right, TWO!) flights of stairs, I decided to see if I could tether the PC to the phone (which was connected to the wireless network) via usb. Guess what? It worked!! I knew I could tether if the phone was connected to 3G, but not wifi. I was pleased.
That's right folks, my phone saved me a horrendous journey to the loft (and back).
I know I sound sarcastic, but I always do. This actually did make my day...

My family and I just moved halfway across the country and my N1 made it soo much easier. At one time, while driving across Kentucky, I had the N1 playing music over bluetooth to my truck radio, while it was navigating for us, and tethering to my wife's netbook which was playing a movie for the kids in the back. It was super hot, and I don't think it gained a single percentage of battery while it was charging, but it worked for hours like that.
After moving into our house over the weekend, the DSL or satellite TV wouldn't be hooked up till Monday, so we tethered the N1 to the PS3 and watched Netflix movies all night.
And it's my alarm clock.

I thought the same thing, but it turns out that isn't true.
When you use your nexus as a hotspot, devices connected to it can use the N1's hotspot and connect to the wifi network the N1 is connected to. Your nexus, however, can't use the wifi network except to pass it off to the tethered devices. The N1 won't show that it's still connected to wifi, but a speed test I just did on my pc while tethered to my N1 confirm it (unless 3G just got bumped up to 12mpbs )

I did not know this. I was tethering 3g and sometimes edge to the netbook. I'm sure the video stuttered and lagged a bit, but my kids didn't complain.
I get caught up in all the latest and greatest things we can make our phones capable of, but when you take a step back and look at what the N1 can do now, it's pretty amazing. Doing all that in my truck while driving 80mph down the interstate is crazy. Some of the credit should go to the carriers (At&t in this instance, but I had T-Mobile forever, I still miss my Shadow sometimes). Fact is they blanket the whole damn country with signal for the most part and we all take for granted that it will just work. My wife gives me a hard time when I get all excited over my phone, but even she had to agree that this example was pretty cool.
My Nexus one is the luckiest SOB phone in the world.. It just sits in my desktop dock all day.. happily sipping electricity and sleep most of the day. ya, it picks up mail and few calls, but no need to work like a dog tethering other PCs and play music. I'm gonna make it work like a $600 phone one of these days...

Collector's item ftw

I can't believe my phone can do this...

Leys talk about those things you just are in awe over our in shock that your phone can do certain things..
I'll start with a few things and leave some for others, or maybe I'll find out some more cool apps..
Heads up display.. I just found out about this, and got an app that will display speed info and compass right onto the windshield at night, and it does an awesome job at it. I use an app called speed view.
Remote control my computer mouse and keyboard..not for everyone but I have my computer hooked up to my fifty five inch tv and sit on my couch, sometimes I don't feel like pulling out my wireless keyboard and mouse,i just load up the remote droid on my phone and it works pretty damn good.
Roku remote..same as above,it copies what my roku remote looks like right onto my phone..works through my network and works flawless..
Sling box.. Watch direct tv on my phone, need hardware but well worth it..again works flawless...
Voice search programs like googles search and vlingo. The accuracy is amazing..
So those are just a few of "i can't believe my phone can do this"
What do you guys have?

I must say this is a big one. After 5 smartphones the EVO is the first phone I've had that I don't have a major issue with. It does everything I expect when I expect it.
I must admit though that the speech recognition is pretty amazing for a device this size.
Not really a jaw dropping feature...but does help me because i used to have an issue doing this:
I found out that the easiest way to move an app or widget from the main screen is by holding it, then dragging it onto another app or occupied space. By doing that, the screen will hold the widget/app in that place. Then you just swipe through the screens and place it somewhere.

My thoughts exactly... Some people just can't comprehend !
what does it not do
Time Recorder. Don't have to worry about my boss getting "creative" when he totals up hours for payroll. Tikl Touch to Talk. A repeater radio over the 3G network is pretty damn cool. Seems kinda silly but Google Maps. The amount of info and the speed with which it can be accessed is incredible. This was really put into perspective watching my boss drag out a paper map and try to find an address he was not familiar with. Ouch! The Evo is my third smart phone and it is so far superior to the first two it blows me away.
I like to use my phone for watching movies
1. It just works (came from WinMo and Palm before that)
2. Customizable home screens
3. Angry Birds and Live Hold 'em - I'm addicted
4. Voice recognition is awesome, especially when I'm driving and using GMaps
5. Streaming radio
6. Flash-enabled browser
7. Flashlight - lame, I know, but incredibly useful
8. An app market and an active developer community
Most importantly - it can do everything I need it to do, and it does it all very well. My only 'complaint', if it is a complaint, is that Sense UI is not as buttery smooth as Samsung's on the Epic 4G.
1. It just works(repetitive i know)
2. Wifi Tether
3. kernel/rom/interface customization
4. versatility(i can change things on a whim, not wait for Apple to "release" a feature)
5. GIANT screen. ( i have a hard time using the fiance's iphone. it's too small)
6. Support base here at XDA(the mods and hacks for this thing exceeded anything i could have imagined)
7. expandable memory(the iphone's have to buy new models to get more storage. we just swap a memory card and sell the old one!)
8. High-end camera(video recording still needs some work, but the digital is pretty darn great)
Sprint TV. If I want the kids quiet on my long daily commute, I just load up the Disney Channel, and get sweet silence from the back seat.

Evo useful after its life as a phone?

Hey folks,
Just curious, as I'm planning on transitioning to the Evo 3D when it drops, is there any practical use for my current Evo after I transfer service to the new phone?
I don't know how all of the services it uses work, so I'm wondering if it would retain GPS capability-- if so it would be nice to just leave in my car as a permanent GPS -- even if it would have to wifi tether to my new phone.
Or any other good uses for it? I suppose it might not be a bad portable media player/backup phone in case something happens.
Thoughts?
I don't believe the GPS will work as it requires data, could still suffice as a WiFi device at the home / Music // Media player on the go.

Well, GPS vs A-GPS. Not quite the same as the latter requires a data connection. Wouldn't necessarily stop you from mapping out a route and storing.
Essentially, the data is what you won't have. Naturally. And, yes, having it as a backup phone for 'just in case's.'

Yeah that's basically what im trying to decide on. I will be honest, I want the 3D for its speed but I prefer the form factor of the evo by far-- ports on bottom, separate for hdmi/usb, and a built in kickstand.. the 3D is kinda fugly in my opinion.
gps works fine if you have the maps cached or use a 3rd party program with apps pre-loaded like copilot. I have an evo that i use for that same purpose, as well as a media controller for all the computers around that house that are connected to TVs or sound systems.
A all around media device would be good use for it. Personally I'm on the road alot so when I upgrade I will use this phone for music and movies.
will make a good paper weight lol not trying to put it down as i love my evo just sayin tho
I use my old hero as an MP3 player/navigation/wifi Pandora player. With the radio off it will last for days (Duh?). My evo will run for 4 days with the radio off, with 6hrs of music played(per day). I do have sprints ext. Battery however.
E-reader,calculator, calender, degree measurer, ruler, emulator, camcorder, notepad, flashlight, alarm clock...
Anyone want to add to what's not posted ?
it will be great as an .. ipod like device.
that is what my daughter is doing with my old hero.
How about a back up phone just in case your 3D explodes (from awesomeness) and you're waiting for a new one to arrive
Sent from my Xoom using Tapatalk
The 3D isn't enough of a step up to upgrade to IMO but if you do upgrade it won't do anything the 3D couldn't do so it's kind of a duplicative device unless you want to keep it around as a spare.
I love the specs of the evo 3D but the design is FUGLY.the new LG phones(the Optimus/Optimus 3D) look really sexy.I hope HTC makes some design changes before release.
could you still make google voice calls over wifi?
The sprint reps are saying that the 3D overclocks pretty readily to 2GHZ. Even if I have to use it plugged in at that speed it's a substantial upgrade. I'll sell my old EVO probably and use my girlfriend's upgrade. Cha Ching! You should still get 2-250 by then.
Yes, I have a friend using GV and SIP on a wifi EVO.

[Q] Can you still get excited for the tf101? if so, help me!

I've had this transformer since it came out. Dont use it much, except when I need to finish up some work on the road which is the reason why I bought it...having the flexibility of keyboard...
Are you still excited about it? What purpose does it serve you? Whats your favorite feature?
I just bought an HDMI to mini HDMI cable so I could connect it at my in laws T.V and my children can watch Netflix or movies we have purchased on Amazon. Any other use for it?
Thank you for your suggestions.
The TF101 is a great device! I've had it almost as long as it's been out and I still love it. If you are having a hard time finding a use for it then you either didn't really need a tablet in the first place or are not looking at its full potential. I use mine for everything, it has totally replaced my laptop. Android has tons of productivity and office apps, apps for sharing documents and other work, loads of games, eBook reading apps, etc., etc.
Any device can be written off as not necessary, after all people can get along just fine with no electronic devices at all (I used to work and live in a wilderness training camp myself). The key to revitalizing the shine on any tablet is to start using it for everyday things and to try changing the look and feel. Try doing something on it that you would normally do on a laptop or PC, after the initial shift in feel you may find that you like the tablet more. You could also try a new ROM to change the look, feel, and performance. If all of this seems like too much work then maybe you should just sell it and move on...tablets are not the answer for everyone.
Sent from my Asus TF101 using Xparent Cyan Tapatalk 2
If you need others to remind you what you should use your tablet for, then maybe you don't really need one?
I'm not at all saying this to mock you, I purchased a TF101 myself and have the dock too. I use the tablet for Netflix, casual news reading and a little bit of playing games like Machinarium and Rayman Jungle Run. I intended to use it for Skype as well, but the mic volume was always too low so I gave up on that and went back to my laptop for Skype.
My three year old son uses the tablet a lot more than I do for watching videos and playing games in Zoodles Kid Mode.
The dock I use for one thing and one thing only: backup battery when traveling - what a waste of money! (for me)
I like having a tablet even though I'm far from a heavy user and I like my TF101. That said, I'm tempted to get a Nexus 7 and let the Transformer call it a day.
It's convenient, small, and can do everything... well almost. I mostly use it at work to connect to switches, serial ports, etc. That way I don't have to carry the macbook around. Then at home it becomes a remove for my TV device, a portable crappy-game station, a small OGT TV for streaming from the SAN, etc. There's so many uses!

I love my TF101. Best part is the "instant on" feature. When I need to quickly check something quickly on the Internet without waiting for my laptop or desktop to boot.
How about buying a Bluetooth OBD II adapter (less than $20 on Amazon) buy the app "Torque" and for $25.00 you have an excellent OBD2 diagnostic tool. I have one and it works great!
Rodger
I just use my transformer to output video to my TV. Other than that, not many uses. Used to use it a lot more when I was using my Nexus S.
Now that my phone is more superior (in specs) to my Transformer, I use it a lot less and less.
Would I get another tablet? Probably not because it doesn't fit my needs. For some people, it fits into theirs. For me, I use my desktop a lot so a tablet doesn't necessarily replace anything for me. I find some uses for it when I'm reading on the go though, although this semester it wasn't needed as much--others it was more handy.
Just kind of hard to find the balance between tablet and phone usages, in my opinion.
Was extremely excited to flash ROMs and all that on my TF101, but now that the community isn't as active (most has shifted to other devices) this has gone downhill.
bedtime surfing
I only really use mine for bedtime surfing, youtube and occasionally Music. I like playing with different ROMs and now I'm trying to get Plasma Active (Ubuntu.... proper Linux) on it.
I use mine for a multitude of things, from inventory control, web surfing, submitting customer orders, receiving inventory, word processing, spread sheets, games, and more often then not when I am out camping. I go camping A LOT in summer here in Alaska, so it is a lot easier to tote around the TF101 then it is to tote around my 17" Toshiba laptop.
My tf also serves as my GPS in the car when I'm on the road visiting customers. Tethered to my phone just for the web connectivity since I did not get the 3G version. Honestly the TF has changed the way that I use computers and my work. Yes the "instant on" feature is very nice. But the portability and feature rich ability is the sole reason I wanted one.
Let's see: internet, email, netflix, crackle, remote into home pc and most importantly as a head unit in my truck, lol! Since it is my head unit, I use it almost everyday.

Is the IK8 the right one for me?

My intent is to have a small android device that I can run Pandora on. I currently own a Nexus 7 2013 on T-mobile. I'd like to be able to swap the sim card in that into a smart watch and couple it with a wireless bluetooth adapter so I can use my in-ear monitors and listen to Pandora when I'm at the gym or out jogging.
Am I looking at the right watch for my needs? Comments and recommendations appreciated (for either device). Thank you!
i picked up an ik8 while in hong kong, posted a short review here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2711623
though i haven't tried pandora on it as my purpose for the watch is for gps while strapped on the handlebar of my bike. the only thing you might need getting used to is the small keyboard that pops up when you type something. though as i've said in my review, you'll get used to it and the screen is quite responsive. i'm not too sure about using it in rainy weather though.

I saw your post on that other thread. It's one of the main reasons why I considered this watch. I don't think the keyboard would be an issue if I can get logged in as I usually stick to my saved stations. Would you let me know if you decide to install Pandora and how it goes of you do?

sorry for the late response, been busy at work. confirmed that pandora works with the watch though the interface might be a tad bit small given the screen size. however, if you've saved stations then you should be just fine. as mentioned previously, once you start using the keyboard, you have to be patient with it. i still make the occassional mistake but i rarely use the keyboard as i'm happy with the setup. in the other ik8 thread, drlex recommended using slide pass as an alternative to the built in keyboard. haven't tried it out yet but it seems to work well.
you'll definitely need to use bluetooth to pair a good set of earphones. the watch doesn't have a 3.5 jack and the earphones which come with it aren't really tops. i've already paired the watch with an old itech unit, coupled with my senheiser buds. works well. battery should be enough for you if you're out for a run...though i'm not sure if it'll last if say you're doing a 5-hour marathon. i've used gps on it for like 3 hours riding on my bike and it went down 50%.
one thing to be careful though is using the watch in the gym. the specs do not mention "water resistant" unlike other watches which claim to be (which i don't really believe). you might need to wear something like a wrist band undernearth to protech the watch from sweat. same goes for running outside.
cheers
It seems IK8 is 2G only in US, that means GPRS/EDGE speed. Streaming music with that connection speed could be a problem.
