EDIT: NVM this is what i did and it worked:
adb shell mount -o remount,rw -t yaffs2 /dev/block/mtdblock2 /system
adb shell dd if=/sdcard/apps/Launcher.apk of=/system/app/Launcher.apk
adb shell dd if=/sdcard/apps/Launcher.odex of=/system/app/Launcher.odex
adb shell chmod 644 /system/app/Launcher*
adb shell reboot
Mod. edit: not dev related, moved to general

yeah sorry about the wrong section, i figured it would be helpful in the dev section for people who had just finished rooting and wanted to reinstall the original home.
but thats cool, and no problem with the title change.
I don't know if you want it or not, but the free ADW launcher is quite a lot nicer. More features and feels really fast.

I get a adb not found...
I'll try with another terminal app...
And the ADW launcher with the root is horrible (and the icon to show all hap is deleted when I put my finger on T_T)), I installed zeam launcher for the moment...
There isn't a way to exec all those command live at one time ? (like .bat for windows)

You will need the Android SDK to be able to use adb... and your phone has to be in 'debug' mode (Settings>Applications>Development>USB Debugging should be checked)
Hi i just used root explorer and copied the two files to system/app/
then changed permission to rw-r--r--
then rebooted phone and it worked
ONLY WORKS WITH ANDROID 2.2 (FROYO)
For those of you that don't know, Google released a new Voice Search that allows "actions". For more info go Here.
First off, I wanna thank Tsenru, klinster, devlogic, BinaryMan, and Synchromatic @ the CM forum for all the info.
This is instructions for ubuntu so make the proper adjustments for windows if needed.
From ADB
Code:
adb pull /system/app ~/Desktop/app/
adb remount
adb shell rm -f /system/app/VoiceSearch.apk
adb shell pm uninstall com.google.android.voicesearch
adb shell rm -f /system/app/GoogleQuickSearchBox.apk
adb shell pm uninstall com.google.android.googlequicksearchbox
Once this is done you can search market for "voice search" and "google search" then after they're installed, reboot.
Now for the next step.
If the search hard key doesn't bring up the quick search box (keyboard input), do this.
Code:
adb remount
adb shell ln -s /data/app/com.google.android.googlequicksearchbox-1.apk /system/app/com.google.android.googlequicksearchbox.apk
adb reboot
Now all should work!
I had a wierd name for quick search box (com.google.android.googlequicksearchbox-1) so keep that in mind if you have any issues.
Now enjoy you fancy new voice search!
tried everyone's suggestions so far, with your suggestions I get:
rm failed for -f, Read-only file system
Worked for me, thanks!

Rather then using the command adb shell mv /data/app/com.google.android.googlequicksearchbox /system/app
I suggest the command ln -s /data/app/com.google.android.googlequicksearchbox-1.apk /system/app/com.google.android.googlequicksearchbox.apk
ln -s creates a symbolic link to the file rather then moving the file. It keeps the google search file where the installer put it. If you move the file are you causing an issue in the future when the next upgrade comes around?

Worked great! thank you!
This worked for me as well. Thanks.
Not having much luck reactivating the search button.
I can confirm that it got the job done cause when I tried again, it popped up an error that the file already exists, so it succeeded in creating the link... any suggestions?
Just tried it, works great. Thanks!
what does adb shell PM uninstall do as opposed to adb shell uninstall
If you have TB, uninstall voice search and google search from backup/restore, then reboot phone and go to market install both, worked for me

thanks that worked and it was way easier than adb.
I'd love to have this feature, but I get "failure" when I enter the adb shell pm uninstall com.google.android.voicesearch command. I can't figure out what I'm doing wrong, except that I have no idea what the difference between Ubuntu and Windows commands are.
Thanks for all the hard work. Any help is greatly appreciated.`
EDITED: I got it working. Not sure how. Even though I got a "failure" during the adb uninstall, the old voice search appears to have uninstalled already. Went to the market and downloaded the new app and it works!

Used SUFBS (or any file explorer). Went to system/app and deleted voicesearch.apk, rebooted, went to market and downloaded voice search
Sorry for bumping the old topic, but does anyone know the difference
between:
com.google.android.voicesearch.x and
com.google.android.voicesearch ??
I need to uninstall swype and reinstall it. Ive tried over writing it with the default apk but its not removing a theme I installed with metamorph. If I can uninstall it, a fresh install should fix it.
I just dont know how to remove it
I don't know if you want to go to this extreme, but I did. I fudged up the phone real good by removing and installing stuff. I finally got fed up and flashed it back to stock and applied root again. This time I'll keep my fingers out of it. I hated touchwiz in the beginning, but now it's kinda growing on me. I've never had an iphone but the home and drawer remind me of iphone wannabe. It's okay for now.
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App
There a tool over at sdx-developers that can remove that when root explorer can't. I forget the name of it. There's also a pay app in the market that I think is called root manager that can successfully remove crap too. I didn't have much luck putting the general swype 1.61 in. It refused to install. That's when I think I just flashed it back to factory image. A full reset/wipe wouldn't fix it either.
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App
I had to do this a few days ago for similar reasons. This is what I did:
First, you have to open your browser or other app with a text field. Select the text field then long press the text field again and switch the input method to the stock android kb.
Next, you have to make sure /system is mounted as r/w. The early versions of the the rooting scripts did not remount correctly but the newer ones supposedly fix it. I just looked in the initial rooting .bat file (on the PC) for the remount command and used adb to remount /system.
You can test if it's remounted correctly by renaming Swype.apk to Swype.bak with Root Explorer then going up a level and back to /system/app. If it's not mounted correctly it will show as Swype.apk again. If it shows as Swype.bak still, then you just have to copy the original Swype.apk to /system/app and then switch input method back to Swype!
Sent from my Epic 4G using XDA App
yea its mounting in r-r, thats def my problem, cant change swype.apk with root explorer
so i need to re-root?
I don't know what's causing it but root explorer doesn't seem to work properly on the phone (not sdcard) filesystem in the system app folder. It's stuck in rw mode. People have said different things why but I forgot. I did noobnl's latest flash and it's still not working right. His script is removing the old root and my phone doesn't have that on there. I don't know what to tell ya. Maybe I should look for another root file manager.

I don't know if re-rooting will fix it or not. You could try. Here's the exact steps I took using adb from the PC:
Code:
adb shell
su
ls /system/app/S* (just shows Swype.apk is in fact in /system/app)
mount -t rfs -o remount,rw /dev/block/stl9 /system
mv /system/app/Swype.apk /system/app/Swype.bak
ls /system/app/S* (just to confirm Swype.apk is now Swype.bak)
cp /sdcard/download/Swype.apk /system/app/Swype.apk (or replace first argument with path of the good Swype.apk on your phone)
ls /system/app/S* (just to confirm Swype.apk and Swype.bak are both there)
reboot (reboots the phone, dunno if its really necessary)

hey guys,
how would i go about removing apps from an installed custom rom?
ive tried titanium back... doesnt work, tried pulling the apps from the pack nothing,
ive tried root exploits and it just sends your phone into an almost
"paperweight"
like state,
any further moves i can do to remove various bits ? there as some things i just genuinely dont want.
Telling which rom and which apps might help
[ROM] Pays-ROM HD SPARTA v1.0 [ULTRA LIGHT] [19/NOV/10]
[ROM] Pays-ROM HD SPARTA v1.0 [ULTRA LIGHT]
i cant list the apps i want to remove as im off to work, but can you do some background work into it for me??

I've just discovered there are issues where /system isn't getting wiped correctly prior to a new rom being flashed. Keep getting apps from other roms and such sitting in my /system folder even after a wipe and flash - at this stage I assume CWM is bugged? Could be your issue is related.
nope the ADB coding doesnt work as its almost like there is a PERMANENT R/w lock on the section i need to remove apps from
unfortunately the issues AERNT related, as ive wiped everything before, these apps are pre installed on the ROM. What does me with this is that the root exploit to remove these apps as in Titanium backup ... just turns the phone into a very expensive paperweight till the battery is remove
weather apps (widgets etc,)
Twitter apps , teet and various other bits i want to remove

Get a new rom ???
hmm flash a new rom??this is the most refined rom i can find for DHD.
for that reason its more of a hassle to flash new roms
I would rather crack it, mind you i might be really thick asking this. that code you gave me have i got to get the adb.exe from android SDK and do this via a cmd.exe window on my pc or have i got to do it on my phone via termnial emulator.
how weird!!!... i used to terminal emulator to allow su (I.E to give system SU Permissions and now i can remove the apps ) haha
Shocked!!

Yes from the android sdk. It *should* work from a terminal emulator as well if you run these commands first to mount the /system/app directory as read/write:
Code:
mount -o rw,remount -t yaffs2 /dev/block/mtdblock3 /system
chmod 777 /system/app
Other option would be to use the root explorer app, it is a paid app though well worth it.

Right guys,
Im trying to list the apk's in /data/app through adb so i can pull one of them!
I keep getting an error opendir failed permission denied!
BUT!!! I can get into /system/app fine with no problems.
Im running darkyy's 9.5 with his new kernel. Could this be a problem?
Its strange how i can get in system/app but not data/app
I have never had this problem in the past.

Either :
adb root
adb shell ls /data/app
or
adb shell
su
ls /data/app
Reason /system is accessible is because system is ro by default. So they allow you to browse it knowing u won't be able to do anything w/o root. Whereas /data is rw and hence they restrict you, unless you have root.
Fyi : Wrong section to ask questions.

Yes, but by default, if u dont run
adb root....ur not running the shell in root mode
Also on most roms if u run :
adb shel
u'll see $......
when u type su
u see #
So to enter # mode u need root but still need to execute either adb root or adb shell n then su.
Hope that clears it.

Maybe he's trying to learn how to navigate using adb. Very useful skillset to acquire imho.
But yes for general purpose, a gui is better.
the plot thickens...
Ill fill you guys in from the start in a short story..
Updated to darkyy v9.5 from v9.3
I thought the phone went a bit funny when it loaded the first boot as on the boot animation it vibrated like crazy and the animation started again as it was going to loop but then the phone loaded...
Been using the phone a few days and everything fine and wanted to pull an app from /data/app
All the above stuff happened and it wouldnt let me.
I thought something wasnt right so i took out the battery for a few minutes and put it back in and went into download mode and plugged my phone into computer to see of odin would still recognise it ok...
My windows vista computer started installing device drivers???? ive had this phone 7 months and plugged in about 100,000,000 times lol
Odin recognised my phone so i rebooted and tried again and now it works fine...
Something weird going on there which is concerning me with it installing new drivers...
This is what i get now and used to get before when i used adb...
