Video Compression/Convert XDA Exec

I know this probably got disscused but i cant seem to find anything releated to what im going to ask if i am blind kindly guide me in the right direction.
OK I have been using Blaze Media Pro software i tried quite a few settings still unsucsseful trying to get a full 700meg 800meg AVI, MPG ect movie to compress to a nicely small and rather no video viewing loss file. So i want some people to share their settings and what software they are using. If it helps most of what i am trying to compress and covert are xvid, divx ect I am hoping you will tell me setting for diffrent types if their are any.

I have not used the program you speak of.
However, I have spent years reencoding movies etc etc & one program that I have come across which is just the ticket for encoding movies for my Xda Exec is Pocket DivX Encoder (the commerical version of which is 'called Lathe').
If you get bored one day I highly recommend you try it out - you won't be disappointed (well I hope you won't be anyway). Oh, and I use TCPMP to play my movies, everything else I tried came a poor second.

Ehhhh..... Ehhhh.. mmmmm..... what settings are you using i downloded pocket Divx and i was trying the VGA one E800. These things still take along time to convert if you was to covert 800meg file how long does it take. I was hoping a full screen decent sound and good compression please let me know what settings.
P.S i am using the TCPMP, i think the windows one is absoultley crap still trying to get into the ROM to remove that crap aswell as File Explorer. Ahh well thats another stroy.

I use PocketDVDStudio with the DivX encoder and found 15frames/sec, video 149kbps and audio 96kbps gave a file size of 600Mb for a film lasting 2 hours 17mins, quality excellent. It took a lot of attempts to get the best combination for the Universal.

Setting I go for are:
The best way to conciderably reduce file size AND increase relative quality is to reduce the frame size. If you find this 'unacceptable' or shocking so to speak, concider that a VCR played on your massive (in comparison) TV at home uses an effective frame size of 352 x 288 (PAL) 352 x 240 (NTSC).
Now the Xda Exec screen size is 3.6" (@640 x 480), compared to say my TV which is 28". (Of course the Exec is viewed close up, the TV far away) - so concider a reduction factor of about 1.5 for comparitive viewing pleasure.
Hence I always use a 1/4 VGA frame size, factored by 1.5ish, and rounded such that both x&y sizes are divisible by 16 (due to the way that Mpeg4 encoding works) i.e. 256x192 {this results in a staggeringly low 16x12=192 macroblocks for the encoding process to deal with, hence very small file sizes).
Further reductions in file size can be achieved by reducing the frame rate but I'd choose 15fps as an absolute minimum.
Oh, for best quality resulting video for lowest file sizes use the XviD codec - Install the latest Koepi version for best results. Again use an absolute minimum of 3 pass encoding for best video quality results.
Finally the Audio - reduce the file size taken up by the audio stream by re-encoding to use Mono, MP3, lowest bit-rate: you won't notice the difference (apart from the stereo of couse).

BTW - the conversion process is all pretty much button clicking when I use Lathe, and a 3-pass encode usually takes under 1 1/2 to 2hrs on my 3.6Ghz beasty. Hell this program even encodes straight from DVD source!!!!

Convert DVD to PPC

Hi everyone,
I am looking for a program (freeware or not, as long as it works) that will allow me to easily convert a movie on a DVD to a Divx file that can be palyed on my ppc. I already have several programs, but not all of them do all that I want:
- be able to choose which titles to convert (main title for movies or single episodes for tv series)
- be able to choose the language
- be able to choose the subtitles
- optimised output for ppc
- fast
The program I am using now (xilisoft dvd to pocket pc) let me choose titles and subtitles, but is very slow (I have an Athlon 2500+ 1GB RAN HD 7200rpm 15X ripping speed, and for 1h of movie it takes at least 2h) and the resulting file is quite big and plays sluggiesh. So I have to use pocket divx encoder to further shrink the file. At the end way too long.
Could someone pls help?

I use xilisoft professional - chose Divx, change my settings accordingly and end up with 2 hour movies averaging about 330 MB if I use the following.
320x240
400Kbps video
64 Kbps Audio.
Using tcpmp they play great and look pretty good as well. I think I could even drop the Audio down to 48 and bump Video to 450 and still get good sizes and playback.
Not sure what you are doing but I suspect you are not setting up for pocketpc size etc.
As to your other issues. My version lets me chose which chapters I want or which VOB so I sim-ply chose the main one. It also lets me pick language and angle and subtitle. Perhaps you need a newer version. Convert times are about 1 hour for a 2 hour movie - no so bad in my opinion given whats taking place in the background. Also make sure you have your divx codec upgraded etc

[TUT]PLayback by using WMP on Touch HD

Lots of people still confused and still looking for a solution, I believe.
In the next 5 mins tutorial, you will squeeze the best out of a good old WMP by doing the following;

WIth this method, you will get much better quality MP4 video compare to FLV video which you need to open with CorePlayer.
1. First, Install the SD TuneUp.

Why?
Some says "Super Converter" is the best bcuz of its performance and its free but here come the new champion, AimerSoft Video Converter.
Let me explain..

With WMP u need to convert the file in H.264 for the best result.
So, "Super" can do that with 80-90% output quality after converted.
"AimerSoft" will do it with 97-100% output quality after converted.
In conclusion, if u convert 720p, 30 mins length video by "Super" u will more likely to see frame dropping in every 10 min.
With "AimerSoft", u may see it once in a whole clip or not at all.
3. Fire up "AimerSoft" then add your video clip.
4. At "Profile" drop down menu choose "MPEG-4 Movie (*.mp4)"
5. Click "Setting" at the right hand side and adjust as the following;

Resolution: 800*480 (You can type it in if u cant find it)
Frame Rate: 23.97 FPS
Encoder: H.264
Bit Rate: 1500 kbps (Trust me, WMP can handle this bit rate)
**Bit Rate Tip**:
Bit rate is the the most tricky part of converting process so u have to b careful on how u choose a proper bit rate.
Here's how u do it;
If the video has a native resolution [COLOR="Red"]lesser[/COLOR] than 800*480 u can go for [COLOR="Red"]1500 kbps[/COLOR].
If the video has a native resolution [COLOR="Red"]greater[/COLOR] than 800*480 u must choose [COLOR="Red"]900 kbps[/COLOR].
Audio: 44100 Hz 2 Channels Stereo
Encoder: AAC
Bit Rate 128 kbps
6. Click "save As", name "WMP for Touch HD" for next use. (You can name the profile as anything u like)
7. Choose your video output folder.
8. Click start and chill out. ^^
The Pros:
- You dont have to pay for CorePlayer.
- You get much much sharper quality video and very minimum frame dropping. (Download the sample files I provide below and judge for yourself)
- Less hassle and user friendly.
- With "AimerSoft", when u set resolution to 800*480, the bigger resolution will be re-sized, the smaller resolution video will remain as the original but "AimerSoft" will automatically put a frame around the clip so the video will maintain 16:9 aspect ratio.
The Cons:
- You got to pay for "AimerSoft" instead. lolz (About the same price)

In this video I use the 77Mb file size, 720p trailer of "The Day The Earth Stood Still" downloaded directly from Apple Trailer with 1280*554 native resolution with top and bottom black boarder.

If u ask me, i prefer to suffer a little frame drop to have a very crisp clear and sharp picture rather than smooth frame rate.

This is a great forum and I truly appreciate the selfless contributions of the many members, like you. Normally, I can get everything I need just by searching the forum. However, I have a problem and I am not sure if it is unique to me. I can’t get wmp to read mp4 files, even though they were created in the manner you just described. My mp4 files are readable using the native player. Any ideas why wmp won't read them?

WMP wont play your converted mp4 file or it wont play any mp4 files at all?
If WMP dont play just the converted file mayb its the converting process issue.
Just try download the sample video i provided. let c if it play.
If not, i guess its the WMP issue.. u need to reinstall WMP mayb.
What software u use to convert the video? Super or AimerSoft?

I used Aimersoft to convert the video. I finally got it to play. I had to download an H264 codec from an obscure site. Now, the video plays fantastically. I think WMP may have gotten corrupted from my trying out so many different brands of media players.

I also noticed that MP4 with H.264 CABAC profile ON dosn't work with WMP
you have to be sure to turn it off to BaseLine
These options are in Super , don't know if VDO has something similar
by the way its in the other thread too,
but you can have a look at the quality using SUPER with this video clip
I don't have the Aimersoft to test the quality but SUPER does a good job converting to MP4,
but it can take several hours for a 8 Gb 1080 file

CABAC profile is set to off by default so that's why i didnt mention about that.
About comparing Super and AimerSoft i dont want to say much cuz i dont wanna course any flame war here and I know lots of people use Super too. (I have both anyway)
NOTE: I recommend AimerSoft Suite cuz it do a lot more than just a converter.
So, what i mainly do with my HD is to watch Music Video and Movie Trailers just to show my friends at work. And since MV and Trailers both are not a huge file so what i normally do is convert the same files with both Super and AimerSoft then play it and compare which one is better to keep.
I know mayb its a waste of time but thats the way i do. ^^
NOTE: It turns out, personally, AimerSoft beats Super by 9:1
NOTE 2: With Step Up 2 movie(its divx dvd-rip 780mb convert done in 1hr 20mins) I just pick AimerSoft to do the job and it was fine like i said apart from the laggy at first 2-3 mins tho.

Don't suppose you can remember where you got that codec? I have the same issue and have been googling for ages without any luck, must be getting late

U can get K-lite codec pack easily by google it, after u install that i recommend u to install CoreAVC pack as well. It improve H.264 and it comes with Haali Media Splitter too.
NOTE: PM me if u cant find them.

Urrrgh, don't use codec packs, they're notorious for screwing up machines.

i have codec pack install in my pc and it doesnt screw anything tho.
can u xplain how it screw your machine?

thank god for multicore processing or this would pretty much make the computer useless for however long it took for the conversion.

Thanks for the response. I think I may have got my wires crossed here. I can get the MP4 to play on WMP on my PC but your sample "Empire_Of_The_Sun_-_Walking_On_A_Dream.mp4" wont play on my HD. It will only open in Album or Coreplayer (although it doesn't play properly). I thought there was an additional codec to get my HD to play the file
This is strange, maybe I will need to do a hard reset already??? No doubt the first of many

Do u have any error log/msg pop up when u try to play it?
Any strange thing happen at all?(such as loading icon appear)
Or its just nothing with black screen?

The message I get from WMP is "Cannot play this file" andf thats it??? I will give that cab a spin and report back.
I tried a Madonna 4 Minutes MP4 video thats been posted on the forum to play on WMP as well and I get the same.

Just had a thought, are people syncing the files to their phones using WMP on the PC??? I am just copying the videos to my SD card manually. Does that make a difference??
I've never really used WMP on any of my WM devices, I've only used Beta Player, TCPMP or Coreplayer. Hopefully Coreplayer will have a release soon with full support for the HD chipset then none of this conversion will be necessary.

I just copy and paste by using Windows Explorer. It make no difference.

Also, what settings do you recommend when converting movies, or mainly sitcoms dvds to the player. I want the best I can get without going into choppy mode...gotta love Three's Company on the go

I don't know about online website because most of them are usually choppy, but I do know about encoding videos for your Touch Pro2. If you want a free encoder (which I use) for your windows mobile phone it would be Windows Media Encoder (google it) its from Microsoft, it has built in settings for your windows mobile playback and you just have set resolution and how high your quality you would like. Also you could use At0mAng Enhanced D3D Driver to have a smoother movie on Windows Media Player on your Touch Pro 2. Thats pretty much it for putting movies on your Touch Pro 2.

Lots of trans-coders out there, but not nearly so many that can go directly from DVD to a file. Most you would have to rip from DVD first. A great exception is Handbrake (free). If you are going to use either Media Player or HTC album (both of which are accelerated under WM6.5), then you can go straight from DVD to high quality (720xwhatever, 1500kbps video MP4) and it plays flawlessly.

I will try that tonight.
I do have the D3D driver already.
BTW, I tried installing HTC album on my Tilt 2 but all I get is a was unsuccessful error.

Also with the Handbrake quote, you will need to have a unlocked DVD in order to rip your movie. Other that its mostly explained.

I was not able to test much so I decided to give my favorite converter a shot (total video converter).
Used the pocket pc or similar profile and made the video (avi file) from 700MB to 400 by reducing quality but it was very choppy.
Then decided to give the original AVI a shot and it runs super smooth with core player (WMP cannot read it). The quality is awesome but way too big.
I tried the Windows Media Encoder 9 but I did not see a specific version that gives me the 400x800 resolution my device has.

Shaolin, you are looking in the incorrect place, at first it doesn't let you choose your screen resolution because you must select the type of file that fits into a type of device that is going to play that file that you are trying to play in WMP on your phone.
Here are the steps to get the video size you want, which I hope you will try, you must go to the New Session Wizard, then click on Convert a File (If you are trying to convert a video file into WMV).
Then find your source file which is your Video you want to watch on your TP2, after that choose your output (Where you want to put that file after it encoded into WMV)
After click Pocket PC (Note that you won't change resolution here)
After all that, choose specifically Pocket PC widescreen video (CBR), then choose the quality of your Bitrate, Audio, and if you want you can add all the Description to your video file if you'd like. (Note that you won't change resolution here either)
Click next, and DON'T check mark Begin converting when I click finish.
Then click finish, after that click Properties on your Windows Media Encoder 9 (it should be on top with a Check mark inside a paper symbol) and click the Video Size Tab. There at the bottom of the wizard you should find Width and Height, set the Resolution to 800 x 480 if you want to view your video horizantel or 480 x 800 which is vertical ( which I don't prefer ) After all that, your video should be small but at a good quality and allowing you to have free space on your Micro SD card, and it should be playing on WMP on your phone.

MX player (and many others) should play mkvs and avis just fine. Try it first, it doesn't take long to copy a video onto the device.
If you encounter problems with said formats, try converting to H.264/mp4, this should be natively supported by android (any many others - its like THE codec to use nowadays )

Thanks! Limited space on the device is of concern too. Any recommendations for a free converter program for Windows 7? A Google search comes up with a bunch of paid and what looks like scam converters.
If H.264/mp4 is *the* video codec, what is *the* audio codec to pair it with and *the* free Wnidows conversion software to generate these?

All my movies were ripped using Windows Media Player. They came in as .avi files.
Those play directly on the Nexus 7 without conversion.
I hated converting movies for cell phones... this is a lot better.

Usually when you select the desired codec (or profile in some programs - for Android for example) it chooses audio codec automatically, the one that's usually used with chosen video codec.
I recommend xilisoft for converting, it's not free, but it's really hard to get a good free converter. You might wanna try it on linux, just install Ubuntu in a virtual machine, I'm sure there's some freeware converters made for linux

I use BSplayer, it woks on everything i tried and you get subtitles.

Caz is right, do not convert your movies it is time consuming and unnecessary use BSplayer and VLCplayer they will play anything you throw at it with subtitles and time stretching if needed, VLC supoprts more formats but BS will do for the majority.

Conversion will save storage space on your Nexus. I use HandBrake set to H264, AAC, in an MKV (or MP4) container. With the proper settings a 90 minute DVD takes about 400MB. It takes about 30-40 minutes to convert the original DVD file on an average PC (Intel i3 or i5).

ripbot264 is a great free tool although it requires you install a few other bits of software first, avisynth, ffdshow etc as its basically a front end gui for x264. Once done though it will give you a decent compromise between power and simplicity and works on 64 bit for a small % speed increase on video.
The other option for space limited devices is streaming over your own network using DLNA or upnp which is what I do

This works OK at home, not so much offline, e.g. the kids using the tablet in the car. I suppose an OTG USB dongle with a big flash drive would do the trick, but I'd like to keep it simple and have the movies on the built-in storage if possible to shrink them and fit more of them. I think the kids care a lot more about enjoying the content than some potential playing artifacts introduced by shrinking, unlike their dad

Could you please post the "proper settings" you are using? Thanks.

I am using VLC and never had to convert videos. its working just fine for me.

Playing any file type is fine, the problem is the limited storage. If a DVD ripped straight to mkv is about 3-4GB, you can't fit much on the device. Not sure what the shrunken target size for such a DVD should be so the quality doesn't suffer too much when played on the N7.

I use HANDBRAKE, just like at least one previous poster, and I've encoded 500+ movies for viewing on both Tablets (N7 and GTab) and smaller PC screens.
I target around 700mb for ~480p, 1gb for ~720p, and 2gb for ~1080p video; but I find -1gb works best for streaming (and I mostly stream via WIFI),
If you're worried bout quality over file size, set the "quality" target to no less than 1000 avg bitrate (kbps), on the "Video" tab. Even a 2700kbps file can get choppy on an N7, so there's no need to aim too high... but it's your call.
Otherwise there should be a "Presets" list on the right side of the main Handbrake window, the "Normal" setting, under regular should be good to start with.
-Then drop in a video,
-check the "Picture" tab to make sure the resolution and cropping are alright
+ I usually use "keep aspect ratio", and no anamorphic, with a modulus of "2"
-read through the "Video Filters" tab to see if any of those might be a good idea (not usually needed)
-make sure the "Video" tab shows H.264 for codec, you can either use the lower standard frame rate (23.976), or the one from the original video, and set your target file size or quality on the right (as described above)
-then hit the "Audio" tab, and choose appropriate audio (i use AAC, Pro Logic II, and 128kbps, with "auto" sample rate)
-add subs if needed on "Subtitle" tab (burn them in to the image if you arent using a Android player that lets you choose subs while viewing)
-then check and see where the file is being outputted, change location/name if needed, and ensure it's being outputted as an MP4, or MKV (nothing odd)
-then either "Preview" the video, "Start", or "Add to Queue"
When you find settings that work well for you, you can "Add" a preset to the presets list, and make it your default... If I remember correctly I had to do this a couple times cause a few of the settings didn't take, so check your preset by closing Handbrake, reopening it, and droppping a file in before you just assume it's all set and ready to go.
You can also skim through the preferences and set default output folders and such.
After you have things the way you want them you should be left to pretty much drop files in, enque them, and then hit start and walk away.
And if you're on linux, holler, I have dual boot with Handbrake on both Ubuntu and Win7, so I can walk ya through either.

I use Freemake
I use Freemake (http://www.freemake.com/) to convert my MKV and ISO files. Just choose the Android mp4 format.

Personally I haven't converted a movie since I moved to android from an iPhone. Personally I just have a 64gb usb on my keyring (which cost about $30), and plug into my N7 with a USB OTG cable when I want to watch movies. The usb connection isn't perfect, but it works, and will save you a lot of time converting movies. On my N7 I use MXplayer and highly recommend it. Great piece of software for free.
If you want to keep them on your N7 then it would be necessary to convert to keep a reasonable amount though.

These are always changing but setting the video quality fairly low is the biggest help for small file size. The quality still appears quite good when viewing.

Another converter that is very handy is XMedia Recode. I use the portable version.
Painless setup:
Set input for DVD or Movie
Drag and drop video or Open DVD/File to convert
Set Output Format Profile to Google and Google Nexus 7
Set output folder
Right click video to encode->add job
Encode
You can tweak the output settings to anything you wish. It is a piece of cake to convert videos and twice as fast as HandBrake.
