The HD2 4.3" screen has been beaten! - HD2 General

Now I am a loving HD2 owner. The only thing I don't like about my phone is the difficulty in typing, but that is another story.
One of the brilliant features of this phone is the 4.3" screen, brilliant for everything. Couldn't be beaten, or so I thought. Then I stumble across this little beauty, with it's 5" screen and running Android.
What do you guys think? Hit or miss?

I think my 32" TV also beats the HD2. The only downsize is it's slightly inconvenient to bring it everywhere in my pocket.
PS: You know what I mean

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=694728

I also love my HD2 but i use it as much as a media player/internet browser as i do a phone. I think the phone part is actually secondary to me so something like this looks really good. I can well and trully understand its not for everyone but it should definately have a good strong niche market. Also, once it has froyo it could be really cool.

HUGE disappointment....

Im closing this thread. This kind of postings leads to no good. Flaming is not accepted
Itje
After receiving my X1 yesterday, I was TOTALLY disappointed. What a piece of shi*
The thing is SLOW, the screen is TINY, and the panels interface....what a waste of time and energy. I've always used WM phones in the past and owned the original iPhone and then the 3G iPhone. I love my iPhone and hate it at the same time (don't worry this isn't an iPhone fanboy post). I need my cut and paste, and overall basic functionality without having to jailbreak the damn thing to make i do what I want.
So I thought I would cop an Xperia. It didn't last 24 hrs before I decided to RMA that puppy right back to SonyStyle.
What I hated about it:
- Screen was TINY. I was really shocked at how small it was. The screen and the unit itself. The web pictures and reviews don't really paint a picture of how small this thing is. Small and light is good, but the screen is crappy after coming from an iPhone.
- Touchscreen? I think not. The touch screen is no more touch than a PPC-6700.
- SLOOOOOOOW
- After charging it and waking up this morning the screen was defunct. It was like the contrast was turned all the way up or something. The sceen looked totally washed out. Major disappointment.
Overall I was just really let down. This phone is not work $799. Maybe I set my expectations too high, but it wasn't at all what I was expecting.
Not to mention I was already thinking about putting TouchFLo on it, then I said...why am I trying to put TouchFLo on this piece of crap when I can just get me a Touch HD and be done with it.
I want the CLOSEST thing to an iPhone style setup but with ease/convenience/flexibility of Windows Mobile. I PRAY that I won't be disappointed with the Touch HD I just purchased.
I understand how you feel. If I were you, I would have just installed TF3D onto your xperia. That's the clostest to an iphone setup. I have an iphone too and it takes some getting use to the xperia touch screen.
almost the opposite, after using it for the day, im put my iphone 3g up on ebay for sale
using Touch-IT Xperi.v3.5 and disabled the panel and X key, it is fast and responsive. the only disappointment is the screen is lower than surrounding. really good resolution.
Also topic creator, HTC makes this "crap" phone that you speak of (xperia) Same company who makes the touch HD
Yea I understand I would try it with the new updated ROM R2 (but you have already RMA'd it) but I felt the same way - for the price it should be much better - I feel the real problem is with the software and the latest SONY released ROMs have made the phone actually work.
yogi:
I'm fully aware that HTC makes the Xperia. I'm sure Sony had a lot to do with how they wanted their phone to operate. I'm generally just not pleased with it. I feel good about the Touch HD. I think it's going to be the closest I can get to a Windows Mobile funtional OPEN phone with iPhone like useability. I should have known the X1 wasn't going to be much different from an old PPC-6700 that I owned back in the day.
That's cool man but I would have gave the xperia some more time. I was going to get a touch HD myself but couldn't pass up the price I got for the xperia. And with the new update, touchFlo 3D is butter smooth.

Have you heard of customizing the phone to suit your needs? If you want it to perform out of the box, then you should have stuck with your iphone
you should read what are you buying. Xperia is a professional device, made for use with a stylus or to be customized with alternative interface.
I you want a soap box ready to use go to buy an iphone
different target, different potential, different users
All the customizing in the world couldn't make up for the work needed to get that Xperia up to par.
Get over it man!
Regards,
Astoroth
X1 --- You gotta love it
the iphone is a joke compared with any decent windows mobile device... a gadget that you have to "jailbreak" just to do something without going the manufacturer's way is a ****ing ****.
anyways, my X1 is fast, actually is one of the fastest (in overall experiencie) wmo devices out there. also, the screen is not tiny, sure the iphone or the touch hd are a bit bigger, but hey, the x1 itself is smaller! do you understand that you can't get both things (smaller device + bigger screen = fail).
i don't understand why you decided to get an x1 if you were happy with the form factor of the iphone. i would have thought that the touch hd iis the closest match.
personally, i'm delighted with the x1. it's the first pocket pc i've ever had that actually feels like a phone rather than a pda in my pocket.
i'm more than happy to have a smaller screen if it means that the device is more pocketable, and i get a hardware keyboard too.
admittedly the panels aren't much to shout about but i've got absolutely no complaints about speed on my device. on the contrary, it's the fastest pocketpc i've ever owned.
hopefully the touch hd will be more suited to your needs ...
Im sooo sorry for you!
Cmon man, this is a developers site. If you dont like it, customize it!
I dont really know WHY youre telling us how you hate it? Like we care.
I love my Xperia!
3.5" @ 320 x 480
3" @ 800 x 480
Righhhhtt.....
If 0.5" matters to you that much, go back to iPhone

Are u using Xperia from Sony Ericsson???
Mine is different. Clear screen, fast and wonderful. If I may say, this baby just know what I need.
my SE X1 rocks ....
i always get compliments about it! (more than an iphone would anyday) ok the panels are kinda a waste of space ...but still they are still cool.
and yes when i first got it i didnt like the speed and it did lag ...but its now a custom pocket rocket, no operator crap etc.
i would like to say a friend of mine has a iphone, played with it for a few hours and was very disapointed. apart from the flashy UI its really a rubbish phone (bought through a apple hype machine that tells u its cool to have one). the x1 was hard to get into but some remarks made are rubbish. small screen???? slow? i think not.
ps. bluetooth / mms on iphone anyone, screen rez is poor too and i heard it cant multitask. thats why it runs very fast.
thats my rant over.
u should also check out the phone before u buy it, i checked out iphone/htc hd and blackberry storm. its only when u have it in your hand and have a play u can really decide which is best for u. i needed the hardware keyboard
There's always individual need which is important.
Many many users rather want a device to "feel right" than "do a lot". And that's fine.
However IMO the author makes two mistakes: X1 screen is many times better than iPhone, and "iPhone" usability is laugh compared to X1...
Provocation... ehh...

another one bites the dust... good bye xperiancers... :(

guys. it was pure JOY to be an owner of SE Xperia, but enough is enough. I just got another cracks so I've decided to let it go and got myself new htc hd2.
seriously, typing in landscape on it is not that bad and comparable speed/accuracy wise with that not so perfect x1 physical qwerty. btw... speed. snapdragon. do I need to say more?
anyway... I guess no x2 for me after what I've seen on videos. no n900 either, even if I was considering getting one. x2 is daaaamn tooo slooooooww (seems to stutter even more than x1) and n900 unfortunately is a one big bug and shortcoming.
wish me luck...
see You on other parts of the forum. bye...
BTW: anyone knows what've happened with orelsi?? I almost miss that crazy bugger always knowing better... maybe his xperia finally cracked and he commited seppuku?? lol
lol good luck with your hd2, im thinking of buying one myself as a second device
btw, i too was wondering what happened to orelsi lol, havent seen him around here for a while, let's hope he aint clocked out
Well always good luck with the device you wish beeing the best for you.
Capactive screen is like seppuku for me,
As for HD2.
Actually I wonder more and more often what will I do in the future.
Even considering that I'll get my X2, I assume capactive will become
a ****ing tendency soon.
In this case I don't imagine using TouchScreen anymore!
well there will be two of us ... i hate so much capacitive ... but there might be some explanation for this ... my hands get really wet often and touching with the sensitive part of my fingers and swaping around gives me the nerves so i always touch the screen with the nails or top finger ... and not to mention the stylus problem ... I hope there are more people who dislike this thing... Ive heard there are also screens hybrid ... capacitive and resistive screens around.
And what the hell ... I dont get it this finger typing is by default non precise how can you make objects so big that you can use only your finger in such a small screen ... Web pages are not so big and with buttons there are also links ...
This is all Iphone fault
the snapdragon really makes a big difference in the speed and performace compared to slow x1 doesnt it??
i too dumped my x1 for a snapdragon phone. the lower-profile acer s200. lol. (hd2 a tad too big for me).
now i can watch hq wmv videos with no stutter at all.
i was looking at that phone as a replacement but just cant afford a new one when the x1a is still fullfilling my needs.
good luck with that phone, looking forward to reading your xperience (pun intended) with the hd2. hopefully next year i will replace my x1a with the hd2 or maybe an hd2 pro in the future.
well... still here. waiting for hd2 (delivery on monday, great deal with o2).
do not get me wrong, as I am not trying to convert anyone to hd2, but this whole need for resistive screen and real qwerty is becoming less and less obvious for me.
capacitive screen, read - toughened glass, hard to scratch, forces companies like ms to improve ui on their systems. see... the only good uses for styli are handwriting (are You handwriting with Your mouse on a pc?) and drawing (again, are You so much better with drawing using mouse on a pc comparing to sketches made with finger on a capacitive touch screen??). imho multitouch is more important than stylus.
qwerty... well... again - do some tests as I did. spb keyboard 4.1.1 trial, landscape fullscreen with clicking sound for better typing feel. I couldn't believe my eyes, as it wasn't much slower (if it was at all) or less accurate.
all I'm going to miss is xperia's still shot quality. some pictures shot in daylight are comparable quality with real cameras, and not those ****ty ones.
... but hey. I won't have to convert videos anymore.
anyway... I will keep my x1 as a backup device and I'll come back in here to share my hd2perience from ex x1 user point of view.
btw, I am not beeing paid for it.

i am torn between the HD2 and the X2
X2 = slow and keyboard
HD2 = Fast and no keybard
But i am so tempted to get the HD2 - to be honest i cant ever see my self using like the tilewave etc on x2 >.<
yeah... spb ms 3.5.x and manila are mos def better option than panels. have You tried that test with onscreen keys that I mentioned above? this and a visit in local o2 shop to get the feel of it convinced me to give it a go.
the last thing I was worried about was the lack of d-pad, but... honestly I do not play games much. other thing is that with recently hacked multitouch api apps like fpsece could use it in the future for virtual onscreen pad.

that would be really funny if it were true.
I think I might upgrade to a N900 after I save enough money - the X1's reception issue is a nightmare, even after testing 8 radio versions. At least with Nokia there is assurance of reception quality - what use is a smartphone if I can't even access 3G?! Or any thing except for WiFi, for that matter. Reception is sporadic at best, and at worse it doesn't even pick up a signal but my Nokia does display full signal strength...

Well exactly my points.
I am not sure why everyone so upset with X1, except for kinda wimpy 7200 chip.
I like keyboard, and don't really care about resistive or capacitive touchscreen. I am fine with either.
The one thing I don't use that much, but I am certain I would greatly miss is the physical keyboard. I don't think I am going to switch until there is a full keyboard on a snapdragon.
The cracks that everyone complains about are really just a cosmetic issue, and I don't really care too much about it (although I did re-shell my phone to make it black).
It is always kind of interesting to me the various types of devices that people decide to get and why. For the most part I understand each individuals reasoning, but I am yet to be swayed that there is a better device for me.
If anyone knows of a full QWERTY hardware keyboard unit with a snapdragon that is on the horizon PLEASE let me know.
Also, I miss Orelsi in a weird way. I suppose it was just his belligerent insistence on his perspective. I bet he got an iPhone too,
EDIT: I forgot about one thing that greatly aggravated me (although I had same problem on Kaiser) was that the keyboard goes bad and needs cleaning. Because of that I reshelled because I figured if I am gonna tear it apart anyway I might as well make it look like new.

actually there's one announced quite recently,LG eXpo GW820, 1 Ghz+qwerty, plus finger print security and a detachable projector as an optional accessory. it was initially announced for the american market and didnt mention european market,so we shall wait n see.
you might also want to keep an eye on toshiba n Acer as well, since they both got on the 1 Ghz ladder pretty early but havent make it go with qwerty yet.
btw,I am on the same boat with you, just want a decent processor with qwerty win mobile, not fussy about how advanced the bloody touch screen is going to be whatsoever...

one last thing, try it, and forget about anything other than snapdragon. seriously.

Yeah, actually I knew of that, but I am afraid of leaving XDA, so I guess I meant an HTC-based device with physical QWERTY and snapdragon
Nothing in particular against LG, but I am not sure I want to deal with their ugly iPhone-like interface.

How do HD2 owners feel about the Dell Streak?

Hi All,
I know this is a HD2 forum, but I was just looking for some opinions on the new Dell Streak now on o2.
I am pleased with o2's phone releases since losing exclusivity on the iphone, and this recent release is quite impressive (and huge!).
Anyway, thoughts please...comparisons etc.
Thanks.
i was looking at that today..
i was considering getting rid of my hd2 for it..but then again..my pockets arent big enough for that phone lol..
so i decided to jsut stick with the hd2 untill they can port android on it or tmobile gets another android device with a 1ghz processor
too big , low quality plastic easily scratches, lower ram ,only landscape
Dell are calling this a tablet to be in the same class as the iPad. So considering the streaks screen is only .7 inches bigger than a hd2's what does that class our device as? A mobile phone, a PDA or a tablet? By Dells reconing it would be a tablet but the streak is really nothing more than a PDA with a phone module. If you look at it this way i'd rather keep my HD2.
I would like to have a play with one to see what its like, but according to the specs, its is huuuge! Would dwarf my HD2.
My feelings are I have had my HD2 for about 8 months now and it is still top end smartphone on the market. Not many other phones I have owned I can say that about. Roll on the next 8 months!
Thanks for the comments so far. I do not think that the Streak's screen size is big enough to warrant calling it a tablet, also, the casing around the device just makes it bigger than it needs to be IMO.
IMHO, I feel that the HD2 is still the best device on the market simply because no two look alike once XDA possesses your soul, and I am still interested in it 8 months on.
Come on competitors, what else can you throw at us? Try harder!
This is exactly the sort of device that I'd replace my HD2 with IMO. Rather than trade down for something with a smaller screen, because lets face it, I don't think any HD2 owners would ever consider doing this after experiencing such ease and clarity with a bigger screen, so the only option is to upgrade in size, and this device certainly ticks the boxes for me.
I love my HD2 and everything that I've been able to do with it since reading & putting into practice all the tweaks that I've learnt of this site, but I'm now feeling like enough is enough as miss the android feeling as it's more 'with the times' than WM. Android itself is growing at an alarming rate and will no doubt be the number 1 mobile OS in a very short time, and the dell streak is the perfect device to complement it.
On a slightly lesser note, it's a shame the device didn't ship with 2.1 or 2.2 but I guess at the time of production, 1.6 was version on offer. I also think the price is good, so selling the HD2 and putting a few quid in seems well worth it.
Too big.
The step from HD2 with 4.3" and thin frame to 5" and thick border is the one that kills convenience and portability for not much. The HD2 is very comfortable yet just fits well in the pocket, but nothing bigger would, and on the other hand 0.7" don't change much in usability.
Android might be the (only?) interesting point.
Just played with 1 in store today for about 10'
It's really huge, not fit in pocket absolutely.
But the screen and colors somehow amazing. With TFT screen, the screen is like a bigger one of HD2.
At 1st, I like the way Dell skin the homescreen, smooth and fast. We can choose how many homescreen, and manage the background apps (somehow).
No double tap, just pinch to zoom when browsing, got flash too.
5mp camera seem not so good.
Looks good apart from it being landscape only. I prefer to hold devices in portrait unless viewing photos/movies, so this alone rules it out for me
Just done some more research and it appears that the Dell does have an accelerometer so should work in both landscape and portrait, can anyone confirm this? Can you type etc in portrait?
didnt know it was landscape only, I am sure this will change with an update though. I have to say I was tempted but I think android has a way to go yet, it hasnt even got a decent video player yet - coreplayer may change that soon though... (dont hold your breath though)
I want one. Hoped I could purchase one from the UK but I would have to move there to do so. Got to wait a month. I hate waiting for anything.
Diane
I'm really tempted by the Streak now. I love huge screen and rarely make phone calls, but I love Winmo too. It's hard to say goodbye with my HD2
I like big screens but the dell has a little too much unused extra dimension for me. I'll wait for the Sony Ericsson 5.5 inch android phone
Actually probably not, HTC will probably have a 5.5 inch out first with minimal bezel like the hd2, and I'd want to get that one.
I have been trying to replace my iphone for about one year. I haven't found anything where the plastic is as nice and I like the way everything looks on the the iphone screen. Tried a few WinMo phones, but everything always looked so TEENY on the screen. A few weeks ago I bought the Nexus One. For a day or two I considered selling it and moving on to the next device, but little by little I am liking it. [I wish the screen was bigger.] I was considering the Dell. I like the Android o/s - **LOVE** Swype. I am getting very good at it now. I had a tough time typing on the Nexus, but with Swype my 'Swypos' are minimal !!
I have Tmobile. Not sure what other phones I could use. Want to stick with Android though.
The only thing that impresses me about the Dell streak is the Gorilla Glass

And to think that I was thinking of getting a screen protector for this bad boy.
I took my friend to go get one yesterday, well what a joke, the guys in O2 aren't allowed to sell it sim free (in my town anyway), they didn't have one on show and we wanted to see it and have a play we both had to put our HD2's behind the counter so they would let us play with it for 5 whole mins (WOW).
So car-phone whorehouse we went 6 of the guys in their didn't even no what it was, even though there was a big poster on the wall, the one guy in there that could help, said yes we sell it sim free £429 i thought thats not bad considering, so he go's in the back to get one, comes out all red faced I'm so sorry guys we haven't even got it in stock yet, were not getting it till next week when the Dell rep comes, (What a joke surely you should no if you have that brand new device in the store yet), so as we walked out laughing we though Phones4U, hahahahaha never had such fun in my life spoke to a girl in there she just look puzzled, then the manager came over, he asked what we wanted explained what it was showed him the leaflet and he said were not getting that phone mate tbh were a sh%t store and just laughed. So he didn't get one went home and ordered one on-line, morale of the story don't go shopping in a poxy town like mine.
After playing with the device got to say it is fun, but
Too Big to use as a phone
landscape only sucks edit(turns out Paul confirmed its not)
you're gonna have to use a headset of some form to take calls
screen is tuff as boots.
I'll stick to the HD2 thanks
The HD 2 was and IS the best Smartphone on the market TODAY, until the HD3 comes
HTC has the most experience in building WM-devices and Android ones and - except obviously raped and misprogrammed Network-Provider-ROMS such as O2, Vodafone, T-mobile - has the most stable performance. I bought mine with HTC-stock-rom, and since ROM 1.48 (and the great mods from the geniouses here at XDA) no freeze occured ever. It is serving me without any flaw all over the world, and this is exactly the same experience that I always had with my Touch HD.
@hoss_n2
You know what you really do post a lot of rubbish on this forum and seem to be seriously misinformed to so I'll answer you points.
too big,
Maybe for you it is but that's just your personal opinion after all for many others it's a great or even perfect size.
low quality plastic easily scratches
Really and you know this how? I played with one today and it's a great quality plastic and feels really good and it's to early to say if it scratches easily or not as no one has owned one long enough. If you mean the screen as well that's also wrong as that's made of Gorilla Glass and their was a video of someone attacking it with a ball point pen and no damage was done check YouTube or Engadget to see it.
Oh and that's not just MO either but that of others that have already got their Streak which includes Paul from MoDoCo. I'm still waiting for mine to arrive.
lower ram
Really as Paul has just been running some tests on it seeing as he has already Rooted it yup in under 1 day it's Rooted and it's showing 408mb of free Ram so where do you get this low Ram idea from then.
only landscape
LMAO just wrong nothing more needs to said here it works in landscape and Portrait modes don't believe me read this post by Paul on MoDoCo where he confirms for some one that the seesmic app goes full screen both in portrait and landscape ?
In fact read the whole thread for his first thoughts on the Streak.
http://android.modaco.com/content/d...-streak-thoughts-dump-got-questions-ask-here/
Having now seen one hands on as opposed to just pictures or videos it is not as big as i thought it was going to be, now if it's to big for you only you can decide but it has to be bigger then an HD2 to fit in a 5" screen.

Dell Streak or Captivate (Galaxy S)

Hey guys,
I would really appreciate it if you could tell me which phone you think would be the better choice. I have had an upgrade from AT&T for over half a year and have been waiting for a big bad a** Android phone to get but have not been inspired yet. The Streak is looking really good and has had me interested for quite some time, but this new Samsung Captivate looks just as great. What do you guys think will be the best choice?
Ive seen a lot of these threads, but i rarely see how the 2 devices are rivals for each other.
The streak is a landscape pad, that can make calls. The Galaxy is a phone.
All you can do is try them in store to see what you think.
Just depends what you want! Streak is much larger of course.

I agree with that, to me i wanted a tablet and i did not want one as big as the Icrap hence a came across the dell its everything i wanted in a tablet that size and the bonus to me was you can make calls from it as i was not looking for that at first, at present i do not think there is anything better on the market, but now HP has acquired Palm i am sure they will come up with a little gem
Depends on what you want it for.
My usage of a 'mobile device' is a tool first, then a phone. I spend a lot of time travelling and the large screen of the streak makes web browsing, emails, work stuff and games really easy. I rarely use it as a phone other than for a quick call that lasts a minute or two.
So in my case the streak is perfect - especially since my eyes are going. However if I was primarily a phone user - then it would be the wrong device - too big, awkward to hold on a long call compared to a basic nokia anyway.
My view is that now days the phone part is the least used function - so if its going to be a web browser/facebook/twitter/email client then it needs to have a usable screen that makes its main function pleasant to use.
Its not saying the phone part is not important - for me its critical it works as a phone - which it does - its easy to hear, people reckon the sound is good so it fulfils that requirement - but as I said - the phone bit is only used for 5 minutes a day so the big screen means more to me than the fact it feels odd when you talk into it.
On a carrying it around front, its not too big at all, it fits in my pockets quite easily as it's so slim. It gets good signal strength, it hasn't crashed and I've even read an ebook on it which I wouldn't have even attempted on the desire.
(oh and it's quite cool putting other peoples phones on it and saying - oh look, your whole phone is smaller than my screen.......)
But if you spend hours chatting on the phone, either get another phone or buy a bluetooth headset.

I can't wait to do that to the iFolk. Of course, they'll defend their god and justify their purchase anyway they can.
I have had both of these within the last couple of weeks so can make a direct comparison. The Galaxy is a 4" display and most definitely a phone. The Dell Streak has a 5" screen and also a reasonable sized surround and in my view looks absolutely daft held up to the ear like a phone.
I remember buying an early Nokia Communicator to use as a converged device and it wasn't until I saw someone else using it like a phone that I realised that instead of looking like the cutting edge device it was, it actually looked like a throwback to the early days of mobile phones.
What I usually do if I havn't actually seen the phone in the flesh is to make a little paper model of it from the dimensions and see how it is going to fit in the hand etc.

You just helped me make my decision. Your view on the function of what a phone is used for is just like mine. It is a media device that makes phone calls from time to time when you need to make one. I can not wait for the streak to be released in the US. I hope that July 14 date turns out to be true!

If you are planning to watch videos on streak then I will tell you this that its screen is inferior when comparing AMOLED screen on desire .. colours are dull screen looks washed out & strangely looks a bit pixalated too .. I dont think its resolution is high enough ..
Other than thats its a perfect tablet with the only other let down 1.6 which shouldnt be an issue as 2.2 should come soon. Build and look is awsome, good camera, good in every other aspect in my view

The movie problem would not be too bad since I prefer watching them at home on the big screen. I just want the screen to perform well when I am browsing the web and using social apps on it.

I have a half dozen movies, and dozens of Seinfeld episodes, that I use on every phone I buy. When I watch a video on a phone I'm not looking for "true blacks" or "bright vibrant colors" or anything approaching high end quality. I'm looking for a quick and dirty way to kill some time while staring intently at a sub 6" screen.
YMMV but for me, the size of the streak's screen trumps all the advantages of AMOLED's superior color rendering, etc.
Pick them both up in a shop and have a go!
Something that may sway you is that the AMOLED screen on the Galaxy is really fragile, drop it on a floor and it will break
And it's really soft glass, even the softcase that it comes with has been known to scratch it
'navrac' summarised the phones' attributes perfectly. I would also like to add that it has a certain feeling of quality. It seems to be the choice for the connoisseur and enthusiast, a device whose qualities only become fully appreciated after an extended period of ownership. Whilst other smart phone users may try to ridicule it's size, the Streak owner will just smile quietly inwardly to himself, safe in the knowledge that his device will still be giving useful service long after their buzz boxes have been consigned to the rubbish bin.
I'd definately take a look at the HTC Desire

Speaking as someone who has just switched from a Samsung Galaxy S (i9000 model) to the Dell Streak, here are my reasons for doing so:
1. GPS problems on the i9000 - I'm not convinced they'll ever be fixed. Certainly for me SatNav is a big factor in my smartphone usage.
2. The "lag" problem on the i9000. Indicative of sloppy coding (some say bad choice of filesystem, so perhaps just sloppy engineering decision). There are fixes but none of them seem to be the "true" fix.
3. I do a lot of reading (RSS feeds etc) so I came to realise that I could benefit from a larger screen - but not so large I couldn't pocket it.
4. Although the build quality of the i9000 didn't bother me (I did manage to take a minuscule chink out of the glass by dropping it on ... carpet?!) it did creak a bit because it seems to be virtually all plastic. The Streak on the other hand seems really well put together and solid - no creaking. The Streak looks quite menacing, the i9000 looks like an apology for an iPhone 3G
There are annoyances with the Streak, my main gripe is that the default orientation for everything is Landscape and there's no way of changing it (that I know). Even if I lock ADW launcher into portrait mode - in reality it stays locked to landscape! Maddening!
I was also concerned that the size of the Streak might mean I'd have problems pocketing it - no worries so far, it slides easily into my front trouser pocket and comes out just as easily.
Neither device is perfect, but really the GPS issue on the i9000 was the dealbreaker.

Um the captivate has gorilla glass so i don't see how it is fragile
gorilla glass is more scratch resistant than it is shatter/chipping resistant
fragile can imply either case
You got your point, that's for sure. But,hey,it's too naive to comment "its resolution is not high enough" ,the truth is 800x480 for a 5' screen,as a tablet,is a bit too high.
Typical tablets have some PPI(pixel per inch) like 132(iPad),170(Samsung P1000),149(Lenovo Lepad).Sure, higher PPI means better video/picture viewing, but it also means the control/text in softwares will become smaller by compare, and that would make you experience difficulty interacting with softwares design for tablets.
Dell Streak's PPI is 187,which is already a little bit too high as a tablet,it would become a phone/mp4 if you make the resolution even higher.
You can always change the phone's DPI setting by editing the build prop
the streak's default DPI is 160 and if it were brought to a similar ratio as HTC phones it would be set to around ~200
DPI determines the size/scaling of everything, the only issue is that the stock dialer in streak and a couple of other widgets are not Android stock, they break at 200 DPI but otherwise it works well enough at 200-240 DPI

Are you still in awe everytime you see a pic of hd2?

I don't know why but everytime I see a pic of HD2 on the net I always thought, oh my god this is so awesome. As if I don't already have the phone
Yep pretty much And even more so when I hand it to someone when they ask what it is, and they just stare at how pretty it is.

You let other people hold it??
The EVO 4G is much better looking from the front, the buttons make the HD2 look less sleek.
Although the EVO 4G is ugly as hell from the back where as the HD2 is gorgeous.
Maybe its just preference but I think the EVO looks better all round than the HD2......
.......but I still love my HD2!
Actually I do! At the same time I would have loved for the hardware keys to have been virtual keys like my HD

yeah, hardware keys of the hd is the best. although overall it looks dated now.
i am not in awe anymore when i see my hd2... i just cant tolerate the sight of other *dumb* phones
i cant use phones with *small* screens anymore... the other day i was using another phone and it took about 1 second to load the inbox. and i felt so odd waiting for 1 second
yes, hd2 is 'awe'some
Anybody would else would thing we're crazy, but I swear, I still have a mini orgasm everytime I see a picture of the HD2 on the net... and I have one sitting right in front me. Always!
Some people would compare my reliance on this phone to a relationship with a woman.
Look at it from time to time for no reason at all other than to say... damn that's sexy, or turn on the phone from time to time for no reason at all, just so I can handle it
We need help!

I just sometimes remove the silicone body protector and stare (fine oogle) at how thin, and sleek, and thin it is...and how perfect it would be with an 8meg pixel cam...and hdmi...and a kickstand...while still being a gsm HD2...sigh...
*will never be happy*
