New Orange 1.6 ROM good for restore? - Click General

After losing my old tattoo i've just got my new insurance one through. Woo! Before I root it again I've installed the new orange UK rom and all is fine (but slow).
If I root my phone and use a new rom, can I use that orange rom to basically restore my phone to default? ie will it restore bootloader, rom, everything?

Backing UP / Extracting Up Current Rom

Hi all,
Sorry if this has been covered elsewhere, i've had a look round but couldn't see anything.
Is there a way to backup or extract my current O2 UK Rom? I totally srewed my motherboard last time i tried to use another rom on my xda orbit as it wasn't cid unlocked. doh! Anyway i've had my motherboard replaced by O2 and was planning to get my device CID unlocked and install another rom but i would like a backup of the original O2 UK Rom just in case it all goes pair shaped.
Oh yeah forgot to mention that i currently use spb backup to backup my device but i dont think you can restore the image from the bootloader menu.
Thanks in advance.
Paul
Not as of now,spb back up works for phone data etc not for rom images, lets hope someone comes up with a solution soon.
I really want to slit my wrists

Back to normal.

I am in the situation that I want to go back to the original Magic ROM. Where can I find it and how will I back to the original and not rooted ROM?
Any One?
Am told that it is not easy to get it rooted, but I will at least just like the original ROM
I'd like to do the same! I rooted my phone with Haykuro's Magic rootme ROM and all has been well for weeks but now I'm receiving an OTA and it just keeps downloading without installing. I know I should have done a nandroid backup but I didn't and now I can't go back unless anyone can post a link to a stock HTC Magic ROM image (uk vodafone would be ideal but any HTC or Google standard image should be OK). Has anyone done a nandroid backup of a clean phone and willing to share it? Thanks in advance.
I found what I need here:

I've not tested it myself yet.

Orange warranty + rooting

Bit of a basic question really for all the Orange users out there (and crossposted a little) but by rooting is the warranty on a contract phone invalidated?
Basically before doing any kind of flashing to new roms I want to backup (simple - incase anything goes wrong but also so I can "preserve" any warranty by going back to the original Orange state), but to backup using Nandroid you need to root first (correct?) - so my concern is if by the process of backing up you are breaking the warranty anyway...if it's worth it.
Not sure if you need to root to Nandriod Backup. I thought you just :
1) put the phone into recovery mode (power-off, hold 'back' and power-on)
2) did a fastboot boot cm-recovery.img
3) select backup from that menu.
TBH, the first thing I did was root my Orange phone and THEN started playing with ROMS, so I could be wrong.
A pristine (non-rooted) Orange ROM is available from Modaco's site if you need to revert. Also, rooting simply changes the ROM. I'm more woriied that's I've unlocked the phone!
Hello,
Yea this is all pretty new to me however it would indeed seem you don't have to root to do a backup (which is perfect). I just figured it's best getting a back up how it is now before *any* changes are made.
I don't know anything about doing a fastboot though, could you point me in the direction of a newbie guide or something?
Also I didn't know the original Orange ROM was avilable - that's very useful to know! Thanks!
Fastboot documented here
http://andblogs.net/fastboot/
Probably need to install the Andriod SDK, too:
http://developer.android.com/sdk/1.5_r3/index.html
SDK 1.6 is available, but I don't know if that causes any isses - I use 1.5.
Lots of good info on:

Good Luck!

Hi CombinedEffort
I've got an Orange Hero that is SIM & CID locked and as such I cannot download the official HTC ROM update. I have already nandroid backed up and rooted, but I not too sure about flashing new ROMS (ie. Modaco's). As you say you rooted then started playing with ROM's so hope you can answer a few questions.
-Did your Orange phone come from Orange direct and was SIM & CID locked?
-How have you unlocked your phone? Was it just a SIM unlock code, or have you managed to CID unlock too? (I've seen a thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=559806 about CID unlocking that requires you to make a serial debug cable - something I'm trying to avoid, but will to do if need be).
-Even if you haven't CID unlocked your phone, were you still able to flash custom ROMs, as long as you don't flash a new radio?
-Did you use the "update.zip" method to flash new ROMs?
Sorry for the number of questions, but hope you're able to answer them.
Can't wait to get rid of the stock ROM
Cheers

I was under the impression that the process of rooting thereby allowed you to use other ROMS such as the offical HTC ones - if this isn't the case I'm also very interested in more information!

Well I took the plunge and flashed MoDaCo's 2.2 ROM. Looks like you were right, you can flash ROMs if you've rooted your phone. However I'm still not sure about flashing radios if your phone is CID locked - I got the impression this wasn't possible from other threads I've read.
So go right ahead and flash ROMs till your hearts content - don't forget to do a backup 1st though, just incase.
One issue I have with the new ROM though, I can send SMS but can't view the threads afterwards (just says "loading") also when receiving SMS I can't see them. Me thinks some investigation is needed

I bought mine from Dial-a-phone with an Orange contract. It's Orange branded and was locked to the Orange SIM

I unlocked the phone with http://hero.unlock-now.com/sim-unlock-HTC-Hero/
adq (Andrew de Quincey, by any chance?) hadn't posted his CID unlock by then, so I know nothing about that.

I did flash generic / custom ROMS hoping it would unlock the phone - it didn't, but I could still use the Orange SIM with the generic ROMS. Not sure how flashing the radio would affect this - I would have thought it wouldn't

No, rooting affects the *ROM* not the *phone*. Modaco's custom ROMs come pre-rooted.
I came from an iPhone 2G background where I was expecting to have to Jailbreak and unlock the phone before being able to do anything useful with it. This is not the case with the Hero. Out-of-the-box, you can boot the Hero to the bootloader and flash a custom ROM from there - VERY hacker friendly!

Orange locked hero _ trying to update to 2.1 - Is it bricked? Help Desperately needed

Hi, appolgies for being completly stupid, If someone can help me i will be very grateful!
I have an orange network locked hero. After getting tired of waiting I attempted to debrand by installing the generic HTC rom ...
RUU_Hero_HTC_WWE_2.73.405.5_WWE_release_signed_NoDriver
With the idea of installing and letting the OTA update occur...
So i installed goldcard tool created and image. and then installed the htc image.
2.1 is now installed but have the network locked message.
I considered trying to unlock via one of the vendors on ebay, but decided it probably wouldnt work so decided to roll back to the orange rom.
By mistake I ran this update which i believe is the HTC 2.1 update
RUU_Hero_HTC_WWE_3.32.405.1_R_Radio_63.18.55.06P_6.35.15.11_release_signed
Now when i try an run the orange uk 2.73.61.66 release I am getting an error message 140 bootloader version error.
The phone isnt rooted, is there any way I can roll back or unlock 2.1. Am i going to have to call orange an confess?
Please help!!!!
Leigh
There is a STICKY at the top of the G2 Hero Development section called Villain Roots 2.1 RUU,.. tried that?
Sent from my HTC Hero using XDA App
By doing this would it allow me to reflash the original orange image?
Sorry for being dim, finding all this a bit confusing!
root it via that guide, put in a radio that works with orange sim cards, and you should be good to go
Use this guide: http://www.villainrom.co.uk/viewtopic.php?f=110&t=2096
Once done you can reflash the original official orange release.
Apologies for being thick...
So I have gsm root running, phone in recovery. What do i do next?
Do i have to flash the rom on using nandroid - never used this before.
try this method - its easier
tinyurl DOT com/3242ljv
you'l need to remake the link as newbies cant post links
Tried the simplified version.
When I try and run the zip file it says it cannot open the file and says it is bad.
Tried a couple of times and with both orange updates..
Arghhh!
Try using a different SD card - hboot couldn't find HEROIMG.zip on one card, tried another and hey presto!
Well in the process of trying to get the orange 1.5 build back on i have got 2.1 working!
Tried flashing an older radio on there and gues what it works. I've now got the standard htc 2.1 build on an orange uk contract, network locked handset.
Quite pleased with myself!

Hi,
Please could you give us the radio version you installed, and how you did it. You'll find the version under Settings > About Phone > Software information > Baseband version.
Many thanks,
The radio version i'm using is
update-hero-radio-63.18.55.06_6.35.05.15-signed
I tried the one before that also which worked.(Basically I started from the oldest one and worked my way up)
I tried the two most recent ones first and these didn't work (Network Locked)
Hope that helps
I've noticed Orange have started rolling out the preupdate, think i might as well stick with the htc build.
Cheers

Newbie has Q's about rooting and more

I have a HTC Desire HD on UK Vodafone bought from Phones4U so am assuming its unlocked.
I want to use HTC sense 3.0 Rom but dont know what i need to do to the phone to install it.
I read on here and on Youtube about rooting. Is rooting a way of hacking the phone so that other Roms can be installed ?
Also do i need to do anything else before i do rooting ?
The phone is running HTC Sense 2.1 Andriod 2.3.3, i heard that i need to downgrade that to Froyo in order to root the phone. Is that Correct ? Gingerbread runs better then Froyo ?
If i do all the rooting/install new rom will i have to back up all apps/pics/music/contacts etc ? When i updated from Froyo to Gingerbread i didnt lose any of that.
If i decide to sell the phone at a later date i can do a restore so that its sold as stock software ?
I'm just off to bed and saw your message.
Rooting is like making yourself the administrator and you can do anything you want with the device including installing custom roms and software.
You should backup/save your original default rom.
You should use a program like APN Backup & Restore to backup your default carrier APN -which is the login and password etc. for your data connection. (Then you delete the custom rom apns and restore your own. This makes sure you continue to use the correct info and don't affect your billing, data charges etc.)
I recommend keeping pics and stuff on your SDCard where they should remain untouched. So use a program to backup all of that stuff.
You do need to downgrade. If you save the stock rom then you can restore it when you sell the phone. Make sure you save it as completely stock (after a reset or something) as opposed to saving it with other of your information.
I'm falling asleep (3:00 AM) - go visit my site http://grantbarker.com/htc-desire-hd.html
Look to the right - XDA Guides.
There should be enough info to help and inspire you too, with plenty of custom rom links etc.
If it helps you, please give me a Thanks if you have a Thanks button yet on your account.
See you.
