G1->MT3GS, No Dedicated Call Button, Glove Issues...? - myTouch 3G Slide General

I'm pondering about getting a MT3GS to replace the G1. However, one thing I like about the G1 is that it has dedicated call and hang up buttons, which are not present on the MT3GS.
And I heard that capacitive touch screens have issues dealing with gloves...
What's your take on this?

I've Never once had a problem with not having dedicated call and hang up buttons. Never bothered me. As For gloves, I've used plenty of latex mechanic's gloves without issue.

I just tried mine and it prevented me from registering any touch on the G1 screen.
Does the optical trackpad recognizes glove-covered fingers?

my g1 works fine with mechanic gloves on also, not thin gloves but. thick gloves is what i wear. still works just fine

well almost all the phones are moving in the touch screen direction these days,so suck it up because this is the reality of life

Depends on the gloves. Winter ones will not work with the trackpad or the capacitive touch screen. Mechanics gloves, rubber gloves, etc. that heat can transfer through however will work on both the screen and trackpad.

I don't use gloves, so I can't comment on that at all, but I can say that not having call/end buttons isn't a big issue. It has the phone button on the screen, that leads to the HTC SmartDial app that is vastly superior to the Google phone app.

screen not responding to stylus pen

I've got my HTC magic last week and order a stylus pen to use with it. The problem is that the phone only respond to finger tap, and I must be holding it. If it is, for example, on the car support and I tap it with my finger it does not respond to touch. Does anyone else have this problem?
Thank you!
The HTC Magic has a captive touch screen, these types of touchscreens only work to the touch of the finger and hence will not work with a stylus.
I also have this problem, not that with the stylus ( I know it can´t be used with stylus). When laying the phone on a tabele an using with only my fingers the respons is very bad. When holding the phone in my hand it´s perfect.
Anyone knows why???
Instead of tapping the screen try a light press, it does not respond to a tap or quick jab with the finger. Go Here and you can read how the Capacitive Touchscreen works.

Best thing that i've found to do, is make a circuit with the phone:
When its flat or in car holder if you make your thumb touch the bottom of the phone (near the roller ball) then use your finger to do the action required this seems to work!
Don't know why, but it does!
If anyone noticed, if you hold your Magic in one hand and use the other hand to point etc, the sensitivity sort of goes down.
Using the fingers (or rather thumb) of the same hand in which you hold your Magic would produce an insanely much better result!

That's due to the orientation of your fingers. Again, it's due to the capacitive screen. Using your thumb on the same hand that's holding the phone, you have more surface area touching on the screen where as if you "point" with the finger (I'm presuming your index) with the empty hand, the surface area is less. You can do a simple test. Press the screen like you were pointing at it then do the same but this time, press it like you were giving your finger print but not as wide.

Edges of screen unresponsive (Unless touching bezel!)

This is my first phone with a capacitive screen, so perhaps it is a quirk of them, but I have noticed that if I am not holding the phone in such a way that I am touching the metal bezel, the screen does not recognise touches that are close to the edges of the screen. It seems that the screen requires a circuit to be made with other metal parts on the phone before recognising the touch.
For example, if I put the phone on my desk and touch the backspace key with a single finger, nothing happens. If I keep holding my finger on it, and touch the metal bezel, hey presto, the button clicks.
This reminds me of a watch a friend of mine had a long time ago, that had a capacitive "hair trigger" button that only worked for him (because it required a circuit to be made with the back face of the watch, meaning when he pressed the button it completed a circuit through his body)
Anyone else noticed this? It is slightly annoying because I have to hold the bezel when I want to use the phone..
Confirmed.
And you might very well be correct in the assumption about the circuit not closing in every part of the screen. I think it's the nature of any capacitive surface tbh. If you press in the middle of the screen then there is enough adjecent space to actually complete the circuit while on the edges there is simply not enough space around your fingertip to not close the circuit at all. That is why touching the bezel works.
But as I have been holding my little Hero in my hand while typing anything I simply didn't know this little odd thing. I have read about it though.
Yet another reason to hold your precious little Hero in your hand...
Wierd not like that on my samsung.. its all plastic tho
Mine is the same.. especially on the right hand side of the screen. If it's in a case it makes it really bad!!
Sounds like bad shileding and grounding to me
Didn't notice this until I put a screen protector on but now it's really bugging me.
On a related note (metal bezel related), I've noticed that in dim lighting the button backlight flickers. But if i touch the screen and bezel, it stops.

Same here. Could it be that the screen protector slightly touches the aluminium casing and thus grounding the screen (or creating a wrong potential)?
I noticed that when i touch (=ground) the outer aluminum frame with just one single finger then the touch screen works flawlessly.
(I'm using the offical HTC screen protector).

Hmm definatly bad grounding issue. Its either some pretty poor design or a defect.
i confrim, using hero without touch the metal edge result in less responsivity and difficult on multitouch operation
hope new firmware can solve this, too many errors using it like a normal keyboard on a table!

Recommendations for a stylus please

could anyone share any experiences for a good working stylus for the hd2?
this phone is stupendous but alas i have to use it for work and the software we use requires very tiny touches and signature signing.
have tried the ones on e-bay (rubber topped pencil turned upside down)
which is crap...have now tried the htc and dagi ones with the tiny red dot and they are just not cutting it.
has anyone done any homemade experiments or come across a moe "pointy" stylus
toodle pip amigos
I got some, and they were crap...

Unfortunately you are all too correct!
With the glass screen!
Put a protector on it and they work!
I have been using the dagi long slim one and it works ok, I do have a screen protector on though so maybe this helps... makes selecting text and writing Chinese characters much easier (I use my hd2 to study/translate Chinese so being able to use a stylus to do this is pretty great)... its a bit fiddly to start with as you need to learn how to use it properly, but once you get used to it everything is ok...
Most of the styli are crap, I need something with more of a point, but that's probably not possible. Still waiting for some sort of battery powered pen that offers pin point precision, a guy can dream right...
i'll try to put a screen protector on as suggested and try...
my problem is it's no good mastering the dagi myself as i have to get customers signatures and most people simply can't use it...
it deffo needs something more pointy.
i'm sure i read somewhere on the forum about a guy who was filing something to a point till it stopped working???
i'm so frustrated as this is the only phone in 8 years that uses my works software flawlessly...except stylii
I have ordered the official htc stylus 400.
arrives in 2 weeks and i'll post comments.
read a review after ordering that it actually scratches the screen!
I guess i should have waited for the 400/2 version!
look on the bright side, will probably misplace it by the second day anyway
I've tried using my DS stylus but that doesnt work, seems like it was made for bigger objects to come in contact with the screen (ie fingers).

It`s not about the size of objects. HD2 has capacitive screen.
"A capacitive touchscreen panel consists of an insulator such as glass, coated with a transparent conductor such as indium tin oxide (ITO).[2][3] As the human body is also a conductor, touching the surface of the screen results in a distortion of the body's electrostatic field, measurable as a change in capacitance. Different technologies may be used to determine the location of the touch. The location can be passed to a computer running a software application which will calculate how the user's touch relates to the computer software."

thanx for input guys..i least i know about capacitive screens now thanx to kregowski...although i sorta knew.
so if someone could come up with a small pointy thing that gives off some sort of electro staticy stuff...we in..
the search continues
Got the dagi (10 euro from Hong Kong). I am not amused... Touching the screen with the complete tip flat on the screen is annoying to get used to. Often only the side of the tip touches the screen.
When the tip is flat on the screen (which it should) it just does not feel OK. Not "delicate".
Which the screen responsiveness lowered and the tap-reaction time increased (which I did just to be able to get some decent fingertyping results) the dagi does not function adequate. I have to aim more accurate then with my fingers and have to press the dagi on the screen.
Putting the screensettings to default (which I did not try yet) reinstates all the drawbacks in the other functionalities.

[Q] Physical button for call answer on Android.

Hi people!
I leave i Sweden and it's very cold here right now. Anybody want to take their gloves of to answer calls on a touch screen Android phones.
We (north people) need an app that makes it possible to answer the calls with physical button.
I use HTC Desire. I think that the optical joystick button in the middle would be perfect. Or may be a search button? It is on all the android phones.
hmm, that may an issues for all Touchscreen device..
At Walmart, they have gloves that allow you to use touch screens while wearing them. They are awesome I have tested them on my Droid Incredible and my ipod touch that has a screen protector on it.
Well, I think it's much better to get an app. I can even pay for it on Market.

[Q] Phone doesnt know that my keyboard is slided out

I have my Desire Z for about 5 months, and now when i want to slide out my keyboard, the screen sometimes stays in portrait mode and pressing the keys doesnt work. when i slowly slide out the keyboard and have it out halfway, the screen flips, but when i slide it further, the screen goes portrait again. I am using a pouch with a magnet, which sometimes confuses my device, thinking the keyboard is slid out while it isnt. but my problem happens without the magnet intefering. Could this have anything to do with it?
I don't know how to fix your issue, but never a good idea to have electronics near a magnet
Sent from my HTC Vision using xda premium
The slider itself uses a magnet to figure out wether the keyboard is slid (or slided) out or not. I'm not sure but i think it is pretty common (i know the htc touch dual also uses a magnet). Anyway, i've tried to keep the back side of the phone away from the magnet of the pouch and so far everything is working fine again. So i guess the sensor was just confused
Have to remember polorization homie. Put a magnet by itself on a tv and see what happense even though there are magnets within tv.
But if its a case with a magnet designed to hold electronics there is nothing to worry about

I had the same issue, i had a loose ribbon on my keyboard

i bought myself a capdase leather flip-case which has a magnet right under the camera.... that magnet is to blame .... but the weird part is the case never interfered when i was on froyo ... but suddenly stopped working(started messing up with the keyboard) after updating to gingerbread.... sadly i found no fix to this ,,, so its $30 down the drain....
