Cannot add Google Account - EVO 4G General

Hey all,
I just got my wife the Evo 4G at RadioShack. Last one in the store, I was pretty lucky. Anyways, I told them not to activate it in the store so they would not apply any updates. I brought it home after work, immediately applied the root before even activating the phone.
It took tons of attempts at activating the phone before it finally went through, I was beginning to think there was a problem with the root update.zip.
Now when I try to add her Google account to her phone, it fails with the following message. No checking of passwords or account existence at all, creating an account issues the same response.
Can't establish a reliable data connection to the server.

I have tried on WiFi as well, no avail.

Did it activate successfully? If not that's your problem. Go to Settings --> System Updates --> Update Profile. That will activate the phone and you're good to go. Just don't click Firmware or HTC software update or you'll break root and have to re-root the phone. Activation can take up to 2 hours due to sprints systems being shat on.

Yeah, activation was successful. It did take some serious time. I have been browsing the web fine though for some time.

Guys, got it working.
It turns out that after I got root, while attempting to do what I always do to disable OTA updates, I inadvertently took it a step further and disabled SSL certificate validation by moving /system/etc/security/cacerts.bks to cacerts.bks.bak. Unfortunately I did not discover this until re-rooting the phone again from scratch, adding my wifes Google accounts and then going to disable the OTA updates again. As I was doing it, I began disabling cacerts.bks again, and caught myself.
Sorry for the mix-up.

This could be a temporary problem or your SIM card may not be provisioned for data se

Hello
Just switched from symbian to android and now I really want to get some apps installed to my phone.
When I click the market app, I need to sign in with my gmail account.
But when I try this it gives me the message.
"Can't establish a reliable data connection to the server.
This could be a temporary problem or your SIM card may not be provisioned for data services"
The part with temporary I don't believe and the SIM card part I know is wrong as I can surf the net, sync my exchange company mail etc.
I have tried with WIFI also, but same message coming.
Living in Norway, using Netcom as carrier.
Does anybody have any clue on how I can get past this and log into market?
Best regards
TommyE
Remove the sim. Wifi should still work. Tested here fine, when I had a Hero. This will not be a data provisioning issue.
I can also confirm this. I didn't initially have a Google account, and when I tried to create one via the handset I got the data provisioning error. I master reset the phone, created a Google account online with my PC, and set the Google login details in the initial setup of the phone. After this I had no problems.
Good luck.
ditto, I didn't set up android account when I went through initial setup, and it wouldn't work later. Had to factory reset and do it during initial setup (it was happy enough using my wifi for this)
same problem on HTC Magic =(
I have HTC Magic, i purchased it several days ago and it was working just fine. Then i found out that i can't replace the google account from previous owner and decided to hard-reset.
After that I'm getting this (I'm on T-mobile USA and I have just internet for 5.99):
"This could be a temporary problem or your sim card may not be provisioned for data services, if it continues, call customer care"
Called customer care, they said it won't work without 24.99 data plan, but it WAS working before! I tried changing APN from epc.tmobile.com to wap.voicestream.com but it didn't help =(
Phone is unlocked. Without signin in to google I can't even use phone features.
Any ideas?
Thanks!
I am having this issue now. I bought my Hero last week and set it up with my China Mobile SIM card. Then I decided to switch to China Unicom because they offer WCDMA 3G service. I am able to connect to CU data just fine but none of my Google apps will function. I can check gmail through the browser but not the internal application. This happens on Wifi as well.
I have done several factory resets with no luck. Any ideas?
after more than 12 hours my problem just went away. i don't know why. my guess is google has a mechanism in place to lock out accounts from more than one source or something. it's strange that i never had the problem with my G1 as often as i changed ROMs and when I changed SIM cards with it.

I've been having issues with getting signed into Google here in China as well. I had also just come back from vacation where I was using a different carrier.
I had been unsuccessful in getting a connection to the Google servers for the last 12+ hours. I have reflashed my ROM (actually three different ones) and reformated my SD card, all with no luck.
Just got to the office and connected successfully right away over our VPN wireless router, however I'm still having trouble getting Gmail to load all of my conevrsations.
So, my guess is the usual iffy Chinese connection.

Downgraded working G1 to RC29 and can't access Google servers now

I have a T-Mobile US account with unlimited internet access. Currently I am using an HTC Touch Pro2. However, my buddy gave me his G1 to root and sell for him.
I installed RC29 and rebooted the phone. I put my sim card into the G1 so that I could get to the home screen and then begin the process of rooting the phone (i.e. download a telnet client, etc.). Problem is, I get to the Google login screen and it won't connect to the server. I've waited several hours and tried again, thinking maybe the server was down, but still have had no luck. Does anyone know why this would be? Is there another route that I can take (maybe putting a different version on the phone before rooting)?
I could really use the help of some knowledgeable person here.
Bob C.
NOTE: When I'm at the sign-in screen, I can touch the Menu button and get the APN Settings. I noticed one of them is for T-Mobile US, I just don't know what I need to put in each of the fields (if that even will help).
Also, prior to doing the downgrade, the G1 connected to the Google servers fine.
The actual message that I'm getting is, "There is a problem communicating with the Google servers".
I'm at a loss what to do.
i had some issues down grading to rc 29 i few weeks ago i updated to 1.5 and then used the one click root app. and also i was using my gfs old sidekick and data would go in and out all the time and keep getting odd text messages. so maybe ask for friend for his sim and see if that helps.

Is there another version other than rc29 that I can put on my micro sd card and then put it on the phone? It's only since downgrading to rc29 that I have no ability to get past the Google login screen. My sim card, that I am using in the G1, has an unlimited data plan.
I know that unless the phone has root I cannot flash different rom versions on it, but is there a dreaming.nbh file that I can put on the sd card that may provide me with the ability to connect to the Google servers once I install it on the phone (holding in the camera and power button)?
I would give you the link but i am on my phone at work. Search for jesusfreke's thread on how to activate a phone without a data plan. You can use that method to skip the activation screen.
Almost every time I've rooted a phone I've had issues connecting to Google servers. Keep trying. Its taken me 5 or more tries in the past.

I tried over 10 times and even reinstalled rc29. Nothing seems to help.
I also installed the SDK and when I try to start ADB Shell the device isn't found. I think that's because I'm stuck at the signin screen but don't know for sure.
It signed onto the Google server and internet with no problem until I copied the rc29 dreaming.nbh file to the root of the sd card and started the phone via camera/power. It all updates correctly, just can't connect.
It's weird because I used to own a G1 and did the rc29 install and rooted the phone, partitioned the SD card, etc. I have no idea why I'm having such a problem connecting to the Google server.
Any other suggestions?
If no devices pops for adb, then you need to make sure adb is installed correctly.

sorry for the quick information. and you can flash official roms you might want to try updating to 1.5 here is the link http://www.mediafire.com/?zmdyjz3y2zn idk but rc29 was giving me strange issue the last time i had it on my phone so try to avoid it as much as possible now.lol but of you get data on 1.5 download the one click root app and flash cm stable and put cm update on his phone so the next person who gets wont have to worry too much about this root stuff.
i am more than glad to give all the limited knowledge i have but i dont see any advantage of rooting a phone before you sell it just saying. thanks i hope this helps

Okay, I was able to flash 1.5 but I'm still unable to sign-in to the google servers. When I look at the APN settings there is no proxy set, no port set, no mms proxy or port set. I've been searching the forums for T-Mobile U.S. apn settings but can't find them anywhere. Any idea where I can find these. I figure that may be my problem.
Thanks again!
T-Mobile Technical Support's Comments
I have a question about not being able to get connected to Google servers. I still have been trying and trying to signin to my Google account on the G1 that my buddy gave me to sell. I currently have an HTC T-Mobile Touch Pro2 and have been trying to use my sim card in the G1. I phoned technical support today and they guy said that I can't connect because (even though I have an unlimited internet account) my account is setup for the TP2 internet package and not the Google/Android pacakge.
Does it really make a difference? If so, this could be what's causing my problem.

Can't log into google account

Well i just got my evo from bb, had to wait for an hour just to get the phone activated, the sprint servers were having a hard time handling the load, says the bb rep and there all sold out.
Now i can’t seem to log into the Google account, i even changed the pass to make things easy, still no luck. Anyone having similar problems

Can you get into your gmail through the browser? If so, I don't see why you wouldn't be able to sign into gmail for contacts syncing. Strange.
Ok you were right the data was not active originally I had to reboot, now it seems to be working but says lost network access I’ll try connecting with wifi

Did you try going to Settings>Wireless & Networks>Mobile Network? Uncheck and recheck that. Of course, I have read all day that the network has been quite overloaded... might have something to do with it, dunno.
Same issue here with a brand new EVO. I could browse the Internet just fine, even synched with my Exchange server.
However, could not sync with my Google account. Will update when I have a solution - I'm on the phone with Sprint now.

[INFO] Unable to access Google services over 3G

I had a unique problem that is now solved and I wanted to share my experience in case anyone else can benefit from it. I was unable to access any Google services over 3G cellular internet, but over WiFi it worked just fine.
I was also able to browse the web over cellular. My EVO is NAND unlocked and been running Fresh's ROM and also CyanogenMod.
Since I first noticed this with Android Market I tried clearing data for it and that didn't work. I also noticed Google Voice couldn't send/receive messages, so tried that as well and could not reinstall as AM wasn't working.
I restored a backup I had made days earlier and had the same results. I tried clearing cache/dalvik cache/etc. still no joy. I tried installing fresh after clearing data/cache/etc. etc. and it still did not change anything.
Finally I called Sprint and they instructed me to do the following:
Enter ##3282## into the phone keypad, select Edit.
Enter a password the tech gave me.
Go to Data -> Press Menu -> Press "Restore". Allow the phone to reboot.
It will go through a lot of different things -- ie: PRL update, firmware update, resetting your "profile" (in settings/update), etc.
It did not work after all of these things so he said he would reset all the "stuff on their end" and after he was finished it worked. I asked and he assured me it had nothing to do with any configuration on my phone. When I asked him to describe what it was he did to fix it, he said he "switched the provider/internet signature" which is on their end. This finally resolved the issue.
So, if you have these same exact symptoms -- you may benefit calling Sprint FIRST before wasting your time trying all those things that I did.
The problem that I am having is GTalk will hang at trying to connect for a very lengthy time. It works over WiFi just fine but over 3G or 4G it's sporadic. And when GTalk isn't connecting the market won't be able to complete a download either.
If it persists I'll give Sprint a call.

Well... you can certainly try and troubleshoot via your phone. Steps I tried with mine:
- Restarting the phone (lol)
- Clearing specific app data (settings -> applications)
- Reinstalling apps (couldn't do this because related to Market and did not have APKs)
- Clearing Dalvik cache/cache
- Clearing app data
- Restoring a previous backup
- Wiping and reinstalling the ROM
- Trying a different ROM or ROM version
I'm sure there's another one or two but a Sprint call doesn't typically cause you to lose any data on your phone. Hope you get your issue resolved.
I've been having this issue sporadically ever since I switched from the Hero to the Evo about two weeks ago, and it's very frustrating! After trying to sign in to google talk (or cancelling and redownloading an app download) 10-20 times... it usually starts to work. Connecting to a wifi network always resolves the issue immediately.
I called sprint, and after trying most of the steps you have posted, the best they could do is ask me to call google at 650-253-0000, which I will try later.
I mentioned the "switch the provider/internet signature" idea to the initial rep that I spoke to as well as the "escalation rep" I was transferred to, and they had no idea what I was talking about
aikeru , have you experienced the problem again since Sprint's "fix" was applied?

Hmmmm... I haven't experienced the problem anymore. That does sound frustrating. I got the rep to clarify more than once that it was a fix on their end and not on my phone. It's odd, but it's specifically Google services that I had problems with (ie: market, voice, talk, etc.) and not internet and they worked fine over WiFi.
You may just have to keep trying with someone else who is a little "smarter" or follow through the script until they get to that point. I wish I knew more technical details but that is all I recall them saying, really.
I'm having the exact same issue as the first poster. I can't connect to Google services when using 3g. WiFi and 4g works fine. This started after I did a nandroid restore yesterday. I did another nandroid restore of an older know good backup and it did the same thing. I called Sprint and they said they did a reset on my phone and still the same thing. The tech also said she had another caller just before me with the same issue that they were not able to fix.
I'm am still using the stock HTC Rom (3.29) with it rooted with Unrevoked.
So, from your description I've been having the same very problem. Like a couple of people, I had to call sprint a couple of time until they got me to a "senior" tech support. Until, then, they kept on telling me: go to google, call google, email the app developers.... bs bs bs... So, While on the phone with one of their "senior level tech support" (silly that they will insist for a half an hour on the phone with you before they pass you on to these senior techs... even sillier that there is such a division... if they are techs, they all should be trained to deal with these problems.. but anyway).
So the Senior Tech guy told me that they were aware of the problem, that it was indeed on their end and that they they were working on it....
(the first tech to answer the phone should know something like that as opposed to spending 30 mins of my time (each time I call) with "go to the app developers.... all 20 of them, it's their problem").
So, now, I'm supposed to wait until it's working again. Nothing I can do until they have it fixed on their network.
The apps that are not working for me are Market (on and off), Talk, google voice, news rob, Places Directory, Madison Bus, and a few others that use some kind of google service in part or in full, except google maps.
I'm on an Epic 4G, stock rom, up to date, and rooted. And this problem has persisted for 3 days now, in the Madison, WI area (3G/ no 4G).
Hope this clarifies a bit.
Great Read....

Accidentally sideloaded verizon full image

So I was rooting my Google store bought pixel 4 and missed a step. Needless to say I had to sideload a full ota to recover it. But I'm pretty sure I accidentally loaded the verzion version. I got all the verizon apps that showed up when I rebooted the phone. I went back and wiped everything in recovery mode and tried sideloading QD1A.190821.007.A3 and it keeps erroring out. This is the firmware that Im 90% sure what was on my phone. Is there a way to get back to factory google store firmware or am I screwed now? I am on a verizon sim but phone was bought on launch day from the google store. Its also noted that I am currently on QD1A.190821.014 firmware. This doesn't appear to be the verizon firmware.
The Verizon apps appear not based on which ROM version you load, but instead based on whether you have a Verizon SIM in the phone during setup.
If you loaded the wrong ROM onto the phone, you may not be able to recover by sideloading an OTA. You should be able to recover by doing a complete reflash of the image you want (the image version, not the OTA version).
What error is it giving you?
I cant remember the exact error but it would error out about 45% through the flashing. I am currently running QD1A.190821.014 which appears to the google FI, T'Mobile firmware. I still have the ability to turn OEM Unlock on in my settings, so it appears I am ok. I just wish they had better wording on which firmwares for the unlocked ones form the google store and others.

Regarding loading the wrong one, I did the same thing because the December update had a discrepancy between the announcement and the download page about which rom applies to which phones. I switched back and forth between QQ1B.191205.011 and QQ1B.191205.012.A1 before they finally corrected it, but everything worked fine on both versions as far as I could tell.
About the Verizon apps, if you're on Verizon or one of its MVNOs, if it installs other stuff, you'll want to leave it. Don't confuse My Verizon and My Verizon Services. My Verizon can be uninstalled, but if you mess with My Verizon Services, you'll end up losing things like wifi calling.

That's not true. You can go to all apps and show system. MVS can't be deleted without root but you can disable it with no adverse effects. They can't get into your device to see what you have installed and when you installed it, but who wants to give them that info anyway?

As of Android 8, disabling My Verizon Services doesn't permit wifi calling because it depended on that application for that functionality. It's hard to remember what else was troublesome, but I thought there was something else which didn't function once it was disabled.
I don't have wifi calling anymore on Visible, and I never used Android 9 because of the wifi scan throttling mess anyway.
Would you mind checking that your wifi calling works on your pixel 4, disabling My Verizon Services, rebooting, switching on airplane mode, then enabling wifi only, and then try making a phone call? I'm interested to know if that behavior has changed. Thanks!
Here's some more information. It certainly seems true for others as well:

And many other XDA threads correlating the two:
https://www.google.com/search?q=sit...69i57j69i58.6651j1j7&sourceid=chrome&ie=UTF-8
Maybe things have changed in Android 9 or 10, but please test it out if you haven't already!
EDIT:
It looks like you tested it out in another XDA thread already where others lost wifi calling when it was disabled, but you said you were still able to make wifi calls. It's strange that you're the only one who can disable My Verizon Services and make wifi calls, but others can't. Very strange.

My wife has a Verizon device Pixel 3 locked bl and I have a Pixel 4 and they both have MVS disabled and both can call on wifi. I just tested again to make sure. Really, I'm the only one? Gotta love that. I hate that they can get into my device without my knowing and see what and when I installed stuff.
