While we are all waiting in here, some SingTel customers (Singapore) are already getting served:
Read their first impressions (starting at page 10):
http://forums.hardwarezone.com.sg/showthread.php?t=2781948
Some good stuff:
- Feels good and light to hold
- Brilliant screen
- Smooth touch/swiping
Some complaints (hopefully solved quickly):
- No led notifications for missed calls/texts/low-battery?
- Lag when opening apps
- No subtitle support for movies?
Oh.. and when you finally get yours, please post your first impressions in here
offcourse the subtitle thing is a problem with the media player. You can always choose an other one from one of the markets.
i'm more concerned about the lag when opening apps. Although i haven't seen it on any of the youtube movies (yet).
List of a few of the bugs found on Galaxy compiled by the Singaporeans who got the device:
1. Video recording hangs and crashes pretty often, like 2 out of 3 times, upon recording halfway, I am unable to pause or stop and the timer just stops.
2. Only once that the music player crashes when browsing.
3. World clock crashes if I switch between the top buttons too fast.
4. Text reflow requires double tap to activate on some sites, wonder if it is a bug?
5. No subtitles =p
6. 6 channel AAC audio in video not playing.
7. online can be uncertain at times compared to other smartphones. not as smooth flowing on other smartphones as connection tends to be disconnected (prompting error to load message) at times
8. Got a kernel panic error (!!!) from using Kies + PC Internet on WinXP.
number 1 and 7 worry me a lot... number 2 a bit.

some things I found:
7. the battery seem to drain quite fast, fully charge last night, after some heavy browser in the morning for two hours, it dropped to 80%. it may be due to me constantly playing with the new toy. Hopefully the battery is as good as Omnia II.
8. all the apps don't close automatically, i check the task manager, my memory usage hits, i think 80-90%, this maybe why the battery drain so fast, i have to manually terminated all those apps that i opened, msn, twitter, facebook, calculator, internet, music player.....
9. just that when i thought this Android is great compared to my usual Windows mobile that run on Omnia 1 and 2, i tried the camera, boom, it give me the "not enought memory" ****ty problem. i remembered Omnia 1 used to have such problem with the firmware, hopefully i don't have to wait long long for the firware upgrade to resolve such issue.

I don't believe that's true. If regular LiOn battery is used, there won't be any difference from other phones.
So no notification LED? That would suck as you'd have to pick up the phone to see if there is any email or missed call

I believe the battery is Li-pol not Li-ion. Dunno how much, if any, difference that makes, but they're not identical.

I don't know where the heck they got this information from.
If the phone is charged at the mains then all mains chargers have a sensor within that terminates charging once complete.
The exception to this is car chargers which most do not have.
However, for a little extra you can purchase a car charger which has a safety cut-out sensor built in like the one offered from MobileFun here.
EDITED:
Okay, now we know it's a Li-Pol as opposed to a Li-Ion that makes it a little clearer.
Li-Pol cells are sealed in a plastic aluminium laminate, so if the battery sees an overcharge condition, the seal ruptures and vents any gases due to electrolyte oxidation and the cell shuts down rather than having steel or aluminium casings fragment, as in the case of lithium ion batteries that may result in metal shards.
Also, Li-Pol can be manufactured much thinner and lighter... which given the thickness of the i9000 makes perfect sense to use Li-Pol.

Are you saying you would only purchase this phone on the basis it has an LED Flash?
That's like saying you would not buy a ferrari solely because it does not have pop-up headlights.
This phone's camera has a fantastic F-Stop/Aperture of 2.6, that's going to make it very good vfor low light shooting.

There is a problem with our battery life and we all know its true... I have even been given a new battery and HTC mains charger
I turn off any service im not using at the time (ie: wifi, BT, GPS, NETGPS,etc) not that I should have to do this, but lets story on track...
My battery will make about 1 day as I am A "power user" but if its not plugged in I wont have the juice for my alarm to wake me up, my wifes Sony Ericsson lasts 4-5 days per charge, but lets not compare apples and oranges, the whi-phone 3g my sister has sahe bought it about the same times as my g1, she hadn't ever heard of "deep cycling" 2-5 times when you get a new phone, she never lets it discharge fully and just tops off all the time, AFAIK she is treating a NIMH cell exactly the wrong way, BUT SHE GETS 1-3 DAYS depending on the type of use, and never turns off ANY of the 3g, gps, net gps, wifi, BT nada and Id say she uses hers alot because its her primary camera, GPS & A/V player
my question is WHY?
Im sure there must be somebody involved with the development of this phone/OS that reads thru here, since there is more exciting stuff coming from XDA than there is the market...
Im gonna add a poll that pertains to battery use...
I wanted to add one very negative one but hit submit not preview, maybe just post and dont vote if none apply..
they better come off a new battery almost all other new phones will get 1-2 day + average use, Ive had phones that could go 3-4. but the state of the art G1 mindblowing innovative phone wont even work a whole day, so what if its bigger than the whi-phone, it has no keyboard.
I for one would like to hear some solid info on a replacement battery and back, for new and existing G1 users, early adopters got the fuzzy end of the lollipop on the HTC->headphone jack adapter I got the headphones with the htc angled adapter from fleabay, so many manufactures stick it to the early adopter, when we are the ones that get the word of mouth going, as people go "WOW that thing is cool!,what is it?! they know when we bought out phones and should be able to figure out when the head phone rev change was made, so send them to the first of the buyers....
IF the battery issue isnt fixed, alot of people will be very angry and the g1 will flop.
I think the bad press is starting to out weigh the good press the G1 and possibly android as a whole is at a crossroad. If the g1 tanks Android will be stained forever...thankfully enuff I dont think XDA-DEV would give up on this badboy, I love this thing, and I love it for what it can be
BhanG
Well stated sir.
HTC/Google need to fix battery problems in G1. Maybe it's soft bug, but maybe it's a hardware bug - Nobody knows
I dunno. With normal use, I get about 12 hours or more from my stock battery. That's about the same as other HTC phones I've had.
there is a battery issue and we are al aware of it.
i have managed to have it last through out the day
just set the brightness to the lowest possible, sleep time to 15 secs
turn off data and wifi and anything else that you are not using
its not how the phone was intended to be used, but it's what i ave to do for now
I find it fine for everyday use. Of course I haven't done a full test but maybe tomorrow I will.
I would like to use my G1 like I use my WinMo but no way I can with the battery.

I think you're exaggerating here a little bit. The battery life, while it got press at first, has faded from the limelight of android news for the general population. The G1 is already far from a flop and I don’t think there’s going to be a sudden mass return of all the handsets sold.
Let’s face it living on the cutting edge means you will get cut sometimes. Your high expectations will not always be met and manufacturers will frequently not care. The battery life is less than what many people expected, but we’ve learned to deal with it. At least we have options (power management, backup batteries, and expanded capacity batteries), but I’d not hold my breath on HTC making any major moves. How long has the issue been going with the TYTN II drivers anyway?

I have no idea what kind of use gets 1-3 days, but it certainly isn't 3G web browsing. Most iPhone 3G battery life tests clock 3G data use at about 3-5 hours. Based on my own usage of a friend's iPhone 3G, that seems to be about right. Coincidentally my G1 gets about 3-5 hours of 3G data use as well.
Frankly, from an engineer's point of view I have not seen any power drain tests conducted with enough rigor and variable control to be worthy of being called a truly scientific analysis. Even the best "battery life tests" out there aren't declaring what type of testing environment (los and distance to closest 3G tower), what background apps are installed, ambient temperature (which affects the battery discharge profile), etc. Without considering and removing these variables from the test, deviation could be as high as... well there's no fixing the percentage really. It's all just junk data.
I do notice after I installed Task Manager, to close out programs I am not using my battery life went up. There are a lot of un needed start up apps.

Yep my friend has iphone and we did test last weekend, both went 3 hours and change then died. If i dont use internet and set timeout and brightness down plus use task manager mine will go as long as my dash. I personally dont care about the battery life, i have a computer, home charger and car charger and i drive for a living so if it gets low no biggie. In my opinion i dont see android going anywhere and i love the g1. Just like wm its gonna take time to get off the ground. To say its at a crossroads is ridiculous.
I am using ADP1.1 and yea if I am browsing the net with 3G for 3-5 hours straight I start seeing the battery go down. But from 100% to 0% takes me longer than 5 hours. I know because I like to lay in bed and don't care to come check my messages LOL
I bought a G1 last week and so far I have been really dissapointed. After having an elf and seeing other htc phones I was expecting big things from the G1.
I am now a week into ownership and after 5 full charge - discharge cycles I am managing to get 24 hours out of the phone with next to no use what so ever. If i check my emails and do 30 mins browsing the phone is dead in 6 or less.
The hardware is simply put 'very poor' my screen is wobbly and the back is loose, all this after just a week.
As for android, it is fantastic everything I expected (except hotmail support) and there is no way it is going to flop. Its just a shame that google and htc didn't wait until they had the right phone for the job.
Thats just my 10p worth!!

Under light usage I get about 36 hours from full charge to shutdown. That's GPS on, Bluetooth on, Autosync on, periodically doing e-mail and web browsing.
Under heavy usage (Which is basically I listened to MP3s for 2 hours) it goes at least 17 hours before I plug it back in. I haven't tested but I'd bet it could go 20 or more.
That's as good as (or better) than I was getting on the Wizard/MDA.
I dunno if anyone has stated it but the problem with the battery has to do with the phone recieving the cell signal. For some reason the phone runs in overload when searching for a cell signal...I noticed this one day when T-Mo suspended my service and my battery meter never moved all day, I think by night it was down to 85-90%...sure enough that night when I paid my bill and the phone started picking up signal again, the battery depleted at "normal" speed.

Why do i keep hearing that there is no hotmail support? Android (and G1) works with hotmail just fine! Just go to the Email program and set it up. WHY!! .. I am having connection errors sometimes though..
Battery is a big issue. Never had any luck with it.. EVER.. just unplugged it and after about 1+ hour it's down to 66%. Played a game (slide puzzle) watched 2 youtube vids of about 3 minutes each. And I had it fully drained and recharged a couple of times in the beginning. It didn't even took 10 minutes to drop from 100% to 89%.. But I was on wifi.. Maybe this is normal.
Software has a lot to do with this I think. Yesterday I had about 50-60% left. Did something, can't remember what, opening programs or music. And closed it. After 5 minutes I checked and battery was hot and had drained to orange level. I checked with task manager and only calendar/messaging/tunewiki/music was on. I closed all and restarted the phone, cuz it was still hot. Luckily it lasted a few hours till I got home, with very carefull use..
I wrote HTC about some of the problems we have been having with the EVO, namely battery life. Here is the response I just received:
htc said:
Dear XXXX XXXXXX,
Dear XXXX, HTC and Sprint are taking steps to improve observed battery life. HTC is developing a number of handset software optimizations that are expected to increase device operating times. These updates are expected to be available as part of software pushes scheduled for later this summer. As with any software development effort, we cannot provide an exact date. Additionally, Sprint is working to optimize 4G network settings to improve battery life for customers in 4G markets. I will be happy to go over various setting with you that will help extend the battery life. Traditionally WiFi, GPS, Bluetooth, and display brightness all greatly impact battery performance. With Android 2.1 another feature that can kill your battery are the Live Wallpapers. If you’re using Live Wallpaper just turn if off. Adjust the Brightness of the display (Menu | Settings | Sound & Display | Brightness). By default it is set to auto adjust but you can manually adjust it down. Consider adjusting the display timeout (Menu | Settings | Sound & Display | Screen Timeout). The default value is 1 minute but you can reduce it to as low as 15 sec but 30 seconds. By default your HTC Incredible vibrates every time you press a key. Turn it off by un-checking the box ‘Vibrate when typing’. Menu | Settings | Language & Keyboards | Touch Input | Text Input | Vibrate when typing. If Facebook, Twitter, MySpace, Email, App Updates, or many other things are constantly popping notifications, consider turning some of them off as notifications do impact battery performance; This is done in each app. To also help with Battery Life you can do these steps exactly: 1) Turn your device ON and Charge the device for 8 hours or more 2) Unplug the device and Turn the phone OFF and charge for 1 hour 3) Unplug the device Turn ON wait 2 minutes and Turn OFF and charge for another hour Your battery life should almost double, we have tested this on our devices and other agents have seen a major difference as well. HTC has received some reports regarding this issue with the screen seperation, and are currently analyzing the potential causes. Most customers are not reporting any issue related to this problem. The issue appears to be cosmetic and should not affect the operation of the device. Additional information will be provided after we finish our investigation of the issue. If you have any other questions or concerns please Reply back to this email or give us a call at our HTC Technical Support Line, 1-866-449-8358. I want to thank you for contacting HTC. Dear XXXX, The EVO 4G and the Incredible are having the same issues with the battery, I do apologize for saying Incredible, but I didgive the correct answer. This battery charging regimine is a one time operation, if you need to do this more than once a month, I would talk to Sprint about a replacement battery, but with the batteries we are looking into the issue further. We are not sure why this works, we like our customers have the HTC phones and were looking into forums and found this and it worked on all of our agents batteries, they all gained about 10 hours of battery life with regular use. We have also, tested how long the batteries take to charge and yes, this battery takes about 4 hours to charge, we are looking into this, but it is not an issue that will harm anything. You should be able to charge your battery while sleeping and you should not have a problem with the battery lasting all day, but again we are looking into the battery situation. With the Micro USB cables, most should work, but we recommend HTC Micro USB cables. Ok, this battery charging trick has helped big time! I've been unplugged for 5 hours now and I'm at 80%. usually my battery dies at 6 hours. I just noticed my phone is not sleeping. wonder why that is? anyone know how to find out? wonder if it could be nimbuzz or k9 mail preventing it. I'm guessing the battery life would be really good if the phone would actually sleep.
edit: yup, it was nimbuzz, my IMing program preventing the phone from sleeping. damn, i need an IM program that supports push!! facebook push would be nice also.

I know right.. but hey if it works, i will be a very happy Evo owner! I'm just wondering if this is something you have to do over and over again. sure hope not!
That's basically like the fix that another user here on suggested. Charge the phone fully while on then turn it off, then unplug it. Once the light turns off plug it back in, It will then start charging again anywhere from 1 minute to 5 min when the green light is back on unplug it and do it all over again do this for about 10 times then turn on your phone and your battery life will be considerably longer.
be sure to post your results! i've never heard of this, but that'd be great if it worked. i'll have to give it a try as well later when i get home. good work OneStepAhead!
then wave your phone in a figure eight for 10minutes while on, then a circle for 5 minutes while off, then on again and you will have Froyo installed.

And umm am I the only one that noticed her saying "By default your HTC Incredible vibrates every time you press a key" FAIL!
Here is the original post on this technique and I CAN confirm it works. You do have to do it every time though to get the maximum battery life every time. I can get at least 15 hours of usage if I'm not using it for movies or music.

I noticed that too. So now we know that the Incredible is getting optimization updates this summer what about the Evo?
I'm hoping that is a one time thing to charge all the cells. I get pretty decent battery life now, so I'll have to give that a try when I can find time to keep my phone off for 2 hours.
Will be looking forward to see your results.
If this is something they expect users to do regularly that is just downright ridiculous.
I'd be very interested to hear what their technical explanation behind the charging dance is. Could you reply to them and get some more information?

THANKS!
Definitely going to try this. I'm guessing the "battery is full" circuitry is falsely detecting a full charge and cutting off the full charging current and just leaving it to trickle charge. Doing this procedure repeatedly tricks that circuitry to allow more and more of a charge while also updating the batterystats.bin file to reflect the battery is accepting more of a charge.
But that's purely from minor electronics experience, not sure if there's any other android or htc-specific factors at work here.

Whew! Thanks! Dodged a bullet there.
I am a bit disappointed in HTC.
I mean FFS, if your logo is on a phone and the battery in it, at least set it up so we don't have to do charging aerobics to get the battery full.
It seems like they cut corners somewhere..
EDIT: One part that made me particularly rage is this.
Your battery life should almost double, we have tested this on our devices and other agents have seen a major difference as well.

Oh so this whole time we've been charging our phones halfway??
Why does it seem like they're in our situation, trying random crap to get things working they way they should.
This should not be a damn issue, HTC should be ON this.
If the battery is capable of holding twice as much life per charge then we should be reaping the benefits already, not running around like headless chickens and doing backflips for an extra hour or two..
Sorry for ranting but it just seems like they dont give a fuh
I rescind some of what I said, the second response clarifies that they are working on it, and at least you only need to do this charging method once a month..
Currently I'm running the NexusHD2 Android 4.1 Jelly Bean ROM. In a rather mediocre signal area, with maybe 20 texts sent and about 3 hours of listening to music via bluetooth my battery will be dead after 5 hours. Would NativeSD give me better battery life than I'm getting with NAND? Or is my crap battery life just a result of my music listening habits?

I am not certain but I would guess no improvement. You would still be powering NAND and giving more work to the card.
If you have no access to charging you may want to check out Power Skin. It is a second battery and essentially doubles your capacity. While it is bulky, like any extended battery, it does NOT replace your current one - it piggybacks it if/when you need it. They have occasional sales and you might find a coupon for it.

Just a question, ny_limited:
In the webpage of powerskin they don't reference it for HD2; only for HD7-HD7S.
Are you sure it's also valid for HD2?
Micro USB port of the skin is also valid for data connection, or only for charging?

I think only for charging. I seldom actually use the Powerskin since I am near some charger (home, car...) most of the time. I pop the charger on when I know I will be away from any chargers for an extended time but a data connection is never an issue for me under those circumstances.
I am about to ask a similiar question.. running 4.1.x Jelly Bean (NativeSD) too, and the battery drains to 0% from full 100% within 12-15 hours by just let the phone sleep/idle itself. Is this normal ?

I thought this was a bad idea to do with newer batteries? Notably, either keeping the battery charged at 100% for extended periods (some devices charge to 100% and then let the battery drop down to like 97% then re-charge), or draining it all the way down to/near 0%.
I have heard that as well. In the case of Glass, I got decent battery life the first day or two, but on the third day I took it off of the charger and it reported <10% a few minutes later. Half an hour later it shut itself off and I plugged it in and left it plugged in for the day. I haven't had an issue since; it now lasts me from 5am to 10pm every day.
Others in the Explorers forum report the same "fix" and swear by it.
Be careful to leave it on when charging
Glass, like other devices that use the same technology, need a few full charge-discharge cycles to reach full battery lifetime.
Glass also has the crazy property that they will not charge if they are completely turned off and shut down. Make sure the LED is flashing when you expect them to be charging!
actually, how long you can use that google glass? it suposed to be a day without charging?
I got 4 pairs of glass for $50 because of the home try out program lol. The battery life isn't good however at the same time it's mainly because you can't shut off wifi or Bluetooth without installing glass control

I know that Google initially estimated a battery life of 1 day for 'typical' use, but I suppose that can vary considering not everyone’s "day" is typically the same As we all know, many hi-tech devices, can have a touchy battery life, some which seem surprisingly low for this day and age and some that hold up rather well, regardless of how often we use them. So perhaps it could possibly depend upon the initial charge and/or overall treatment of the device and battery? Also, I believe they did an upgrade to the operating system earlier this year that included improving the battery life, and from what I’ve heard, it’s a bit better than it was before!

Mine lasts over 20 hours.
Im using the device since Tuesday and here are my findings about the device.
Lets start with the Goodies,
Once you hold the phone you know you have got a piece of unique quality phone. It is designed really nice. If I would trust myself I would never use a case for this device.
Battery life is amazing. Nobody can complain about the battery life of this phone unless they have a faulty battery. First day charged it for 4 hours and lasted me 1 day 16 hours. I totally drained my battery and fully charged it and lasted me 1 day 17 hours. (5 hours of screen time on both charges). I would give 10/10 on battery life thats for sure.
Camera is awesome. There are no words to describe to camera quality. I was really worried about the camera quality after seeing some silly pictures taken with the device. So many options to choose on camera. You definitely don't need a third party camera app for this phone.
Recorded some videos at 1080p quality. I can only say "wow". I was mirroring it on my 3D HDTV, everything is so clear. When you upload it to Youtube you dont get as good as quality you have in your phone. Do not judge the video quality of the camera at youtube or any other video uploading websites. They always trim your video and reduce the quality of the videos.
Full Album of photos taken at Botanic garden
Defocus background Mode Photo Samples
Manual Mode Photo Samples
4K Video Quality Sample
Screen, it is really nice and clear. I was also worried about the screen as someone said screen is really dim. That guy must be blind. On highest brightness you cannot even look at the screen cos its shining on your eyes . When it is sunny outside if the screen brightness is not at full you can hardly see the screen but if it is full its fine for me at least.
Sound quality is pretty good on both ways either on speakers or headphones. It can actually be too loud if you are watching good quality movie or listening good quality songs.
Antutu Benchmark Score and Comparisons
And the baddies.
Notification sound and vibration are so low. You can hardly hear your notifications. I have changed my whatsapp notification vibrate to long one still sometimes cant feel it. Hope they will fix it with an update.
Double touch to wake feature is not responsive. I was like tapping 10 times to wake the phone up where I supposed to tap twice. I just dont use it any more. Also I believe it drains the battery.
4K Video recording is out of sync. I believe that cos the screen has to be 4K to get the sync at the right time. It is quite pointless to record videos at 4K unless you have 4K TV.
Fingerprints on back glass I mean it gets dirty so easily I even tried that by washing my hands and after playing a wee while it leaves the fingerprints on the glass is annoying me. I have got a case that problem is sorted but still something could be done for it.
Charging battery is seems so slow to me, takes over 4 hours to fully charge. Not too sure if I have got a faulty charger or everyone is the time as me but it should be quicker in my opinion.
There is no restart button on power menu all the other phones have it. I have no idea why they never put restart button on the power menu.
So far I can say those things about the phone but I will update it when I find out new stuff.

When I recorded 4K video it was getting warm I did record quite small length of video though 38 seconds.
I think everybody has got that issue it warms up or overheat while recording 4K videos.
I did record 6 mins of 1080p video it was totally fine.
Call quality is really good even with headphones.

Battery life is amazing 1 day 17 hours it lasted me on second charge. On first charge was almost the same.
Judging from your response on the charging time, I believe the charger provided by Sony has a low current. Since Z2 has quick charge 2.0, get a stronger charging adapter to get a faster charging time.

I have yet to receive my Z2 so I am not entirely sure as to where you can get the charger unfortunately.
I believe quick charge 2.0 mean it supports up to more than (>) 4Amp current compare to the ones provided by sony which is 1.5A. This explains how Oppo Find 7 charge its latest flagship with 70% in just 30 minutes since it is provided with 4.5A charger.
.. I could be wrong though.

I've used double tap to wake a lot, it has never failed once so far. Maybe you accidentally putt glove mode on?
My battery lasted over 22 hours, with 38% left (5 hours 33 mins screen time). Battery charged from 38% to 90% in about an hour, used Sony charger (microsd).
I agree about the ring tone and notification volumes being too soft.

My charger looks smaller then yours, I couldn't take a clear picture of it ATM.
Charger EP880 1269-4154.1
TYPE AC-0401-AU
INPUT: 100-240V~ 300mA 50-60Hz
OUTPUT: 5.0 VDC=== 1500mA
PSM08AU-050S
S/N xxxxxxxxx
Made in China by Phihong
This difference seems to be the input, mine is 300mA while your's is 250mA and made in different places.
I would just like to add I have the same issue with the tap to wake functionality. Its intermittent at best.
I have noticed it happens when the phone has been idle for some time. It will take around 4 taps to wake the screen. Once you do it once, it will pretty much do it perfect every time repeatedly. That's as far as my trouble shooting has established so far.
It is definitely an issue though and don't let anyone else tell you otherwise.
Where did you get your Z2 from? Wasn't O2 by any chance?

I just woke up about 1 1/2 hours ago and the phone double tap on first try for me, have all the power saving options turned on. I am not saying it's not an issue, it's just not an issue for me because it has worked for me 100% of the times I've tried it. Not sure if I'm just lucky or if I'm some kind of double tap master.

its fine after the initial attempt from a long idle period though. Who's using the official flip case? I am. I'm wondering if the felt against the surface could be causing some kind of weird problem. Clutching at straws but trying to find some common/uncommon ground.
