Moving through text one character at a time - XPERIA X10 General

hi,
i have searched xda and google to no avail, is there a way of moving through text ( in a SMS) one character at a time as you would if you had navigation/direction buttons?
thanks

If you buy Smart Keyboard Pro, it allows you to enable direction keys to do just that.

The latest HTC keyboard allows you to enable the volume controls as a cursor. It is also free!

jep, just use the htc keyboard.
there you have directional pad's to move the curserkey's

thanks,
I currently use HTC_ime (it's an older version), going to update to version 25 (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=5475283), hopefully this will do the trick
cheers

does anyone have problem messaging people using xda.. when i submit I get error.. replyin to topics fine tho!

The Japanese keyboard already on the phone has arrows on the English alphabet keyboard, for the weak of heart when it comes to installing things.

where do you get google voice search? I've looked for it in the market and can't find it. Is voice recognition a feature only available in later versions of android?
It is a feature available for 1.6. SE decided not to add it to the OS.
Most rooted Android 1.6 Roms have that. It was quite useful when I had my rooted HTC Magic. Just press the voice icon at the search widget and you could do a Google search without using the keyboard. Too bad SE decided not to carry that on the X10.

bummer. I knew what I was getting into and I still love the X10, but I'm definitely looking forward to a root. hopefully someone can pull it off, and soon
I have the voice search app on my x10....and i can also use the speech to text mic button on the htc keyboard.
Might depend on where you got the phone. Had 2 x10i only the first one had voice recognition. I'm using a x10a now with no voice.

Need some keyboard info.

So after rooting I got the HTC mod keyboard.
Now the problem is that I really like the android keyboard.
The only features that I miss on it are the suggestion of words that I have typed such as email addresses, ethnic names, etc. from the default keyboard. Also the HTC mod keyboard has a voice type button that I love very much.
Is there another keyboard that I can install that will do these 2 things and still look like the android keyboard?
I will happily use the HTC mod keyboard if it could suggest to me the emails and words that I have typed but I can't seem to find the option to enable it.
Help. Thank you.
In the Locale & Text section of Setttings, you can select the HTC_MOD IME section there. In here, you can find some different keyboard settings like Prediction, including email addresses and urls ( for some reason these aren't automatically enabled ).

I have that turned on but it only works for url bars. I wanted it so that I could enter my email address in the different log in screens for websites using one tap. So fat I have succeeded in getting the first half and the second half of the email saved as 2 separate words and i just join them by putting @ in between.
Edit: It also does not save words like "mackdaddy187" in the dictionary since it is not all letters. I use this name for all websites and it is hard trying to enter i one by one in each website.
Why don't you use Skyfire browser? It has the ability to remembe form information like usernames and passwords.

Possible hardware keyboard fix for Epic.

If this has been posted before please delete, but I believe I have solved my issue with the physical keyboard missing keys. I turned off all the software keyboards and swype it seems to have done the trick.
Problem is I have to change it everytime I switch batteries. Is there a way to do thi?

So tht it loks smthing lk ths
Yes, I've read that swype (enabled) is most likely the culprit.

Bingo, it can be annoying at times. When typing long emails and texts, be sure to go back and proofread what you just typed (good practice anyway). Turning off swype did seem to help a bit.

And not all of us want to sound like mysteryemotionz.
would make it a software issue then..not hardware =D good to know
I was able to type several paragraphs with all the soft keyboards except for Swype disabled, and I don't have the missing key issue anymore. I simply disabled the Samsung and Android keyboards. I use Swype way too much to disable it.

I use keyboard manager to help with this...
Install keyboard manager along with touchpal from market free (completely).
I have Swype enable and have it set as my portrait keyboard
Then when I switch to landscape keyboard manager services changes my kb to touchpal in a fraction of a second without any interaction.
What awesome about touch pal is that it offers some of the best spelling correction word prediction with our hardware keyboards. Takes a while to get used to but by far is the best solution for me as not only does it fix the random keydrops but it also spell checks and suggests words on the fly.
I was using the Windows Mobile Version for a long time before changing to android, but absolutely love Swype for portrait one handed.
In a previous post I made I pointed out that the lag I found to be software and not hardware... if you long press on many letters you will get a popup instead of repeat keys these seem to be the cause of the drops, after using touchpal, if you long press a letter it quickly repeats.

Cool tip! Definitely want to try this... but searching in the Market, I couldn't find Keyboard Manager .. and not sure the Touchpal that comes up is what you're referring to. Is it still available?

I couldn't find them either. Can you post the developer name or appbrain links?
EDIT:
Found the XDA thread for Keyboard Manager: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=830177

sorry about that yes the xda link above it is the program that I mean.
also when you search on the market for touchpal it is the 1 with the blue icon and the chinese characters not sure why the chinese characters are there because it is in english don't be afraid.

Wow.
I unchecked the samsung and android keypad and tested it out. Updated twitter and FB without a hitch, no dropped characters! Very cool, and thanks for the tip. That's been driving me (and my wife) crazy!

It seems everytime I remove the battery and reinstall it that swype and the other keyboards are re-enabled. Is there anyway to keep them turned off?

I believe they need to be removed using sdx stock app removal.
Touchpal (chinese origin) privileges:
-full internet access
-record audio
-read contacts
Umm. I think I'll pass. I don't need the chinese keyboard reading my contacts, record audio, and send it back to the chinese developers...

Internet access to check for updates, record audio is for voice to text and contacts im not sure about but i think its for autocomplete to add to the dictionary. Check out Swype permissions same read contact data is there...
Trust me I have been using CooTek products for years they are a reputable company... Chinese or not.
PS you could try with another keyboard but I think the key is touchpal, all i can say is if the keyboard your using gets rid of the OS default popup that happens when you long press on a key it should work. I wish there was a dev that could just figure out how to disable this all together as it happens when there are no soft keyboards active,,, I am sure this is the cause to our missed keys try ee or oo in words 7/10 times it will miss if you are fast this is because its trying to determine the length of time the key was pressed to display the box of options.
I can't get keyboard manager to recognize touchpal as an option...any ideas?
NM, have to play with the actual system settings first

Hi there

I was wondering if there is an app like VNC (using wifi) that will work as a gaming pad or keyboard. I know it sounds silly but i play racing games with friends and we have to change seats if front of the computer. If the phone worked as keyboard via wifi it would be great (all u really need is up down right left and space bar for handbreak). Obviously it must support multi touch. I think this is a good idea for developers as it might be a very usefull. Btw sgs2 is amazing
Try remote droid, you need the app from the market, the server from there website to be running on your computer and to be connected to the same network aka via wifi.
Works well for me, trackpad plus keyboard!

This is what i was looking for but theres no arrows (like on the keyboard) and multi touch doesnt seem to work any ideas?
It uses the keyboard you have installed, so install one that has arrow keys.
Multitouch works for me, two fingers scrolls for example.

Jellybean keyboard input issues

Sorry for posting here but it is only place I can as it's my first post.
So I've turned to XDA as I thought I would bring my TF101 into teh world of JellyBean.
Following the excellent guides on here I easily rooted and flashed the thing with Team EOS Jellybean ROM.
Went like a dream and a big thank you to the people who have invested so much time and effort.
I have a strange issue though:
Type in the address bar of the browser or in a Tapatalk post the keyboard pops up
Type one letter and it minimises.
I touch to type again and it appears
I can only type a few letters (sometimes only one) before it minimises again
this continues ..
The keyboard is basically unusable. Anyone had a similar issue?
Sounds like you are using the TeamEOS 4 ROM.
From TimDuru's page is notes:
- Default AOSP Soft keyboard crashing if using auto-suggestion
=> workaround: Go to the keyboard settings and change to Auto-correction off + Show correction suggestions:always hide.
You can also fallback to gapps 20121229 (no swipe feature with that version though)
See here for more issues and workarounds: http://public.timduru.org/Android/tf101/eos4/

I have same kind of problem but with Opera mobile browser. Text input in address bar works fine but input for any other input boxes in websites is pain in the ass. I manage to write one or two letter for example in login screen when keyboard vanished. That is strange since Opera uses its own keyboard layout.

OK I got this sorted out. Fistly Opera uses Android keyboard. I installed from google play Jelly bean keyboard (VLLWP) and it works fine.
