Once you have "rooted" your phone (there are many ways, you need to search about), you basically have access to things you didn't before like modifying system functions at a lower level. It basically means you can give your phone even more capabilities using apps that require root, and it enables you to install custom roms and such.
I wondered about this too. Had mine only a few days also, so are there any links to Rooting this phone and things to look out for??

Oh sorry wrong by me...

The root is the harddrive/sd cards very bottom. (like in a computer the root is usually C:\) So if someone says that you should put the files in the "root" you put it on the cards bottom not in any folders or anything.

Not in this context is it now...
is it possible to root your device on a mac?
most of the examples i've seen are done on pcs?
Think of it as the different between admin user and guest user.

It's not necessary to involve a PC. Just do this:
1 Download the update.zip file from http://www.multiupload.com/JHIFK9K80P using your phone itself. However, if you're using the native browser, make sure you have first installed Astro File Manager. Otherwise, the browser does not support downloading of such file type.
2. Then start the stock program called My Files. Navigate to the /sdcard/download folder to look for update.zip
3. Move it to /sdcard. This is done by clicking menu button -> more->move, select the update.zip, press move, move here.
4. Check that the update.zip file is at the root, then continue.
5. Power down the phone. This done by holding the power button then select power off option.
6. Press volume UP button+ power button+ home button at the same time until you see the galaxy S samsung logo screen before letting go of all three buttons. You will see four options presented.
7. Use the volume button to move between options. You would want to select the option called "apply adcard:update.zip by pressing the home key.
Then wait for it to reboot. It's done
8. You know you're rooted when you see an application icon called Suoeruser Permission in your application drawer.
To confirm the step here cross check with this post:

Hope this helps. I understand the apprehension,p. I'm also an Android noob. I own an Android device for around 7days now.
please be aware that rooting your phone voids your warranty, so I would not do it unless you actually have a real desire to use a root app/change roms
for the average person root is not really necessary, playing around with root apps without knowing what you are doing can cause much more damage than good.

True. I did it because I need screen capture. Wanted to flash new firmware to remove lags and get GPS working, but it seems like no firmware can really do that yet. So I'll wait for Froyo.

Ah, I now remember that you need to install another program for Android browser to support download of such file. As I've hard reset my phone twice, its no longer on my phone and I can't remember the name of the program that enables this. Anyone know?
Edit: it's called Astro file manager . Install that first. I discovered it when evaluating browser in post 4 and five in this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=724998

Not just turning off the screen. You must power it off. These two mean different things. To power off, press and hold the power button until you see the option to power off as one of options. Read step 5 again.

GOT IT! Its different for captivate, i needed to press up n down volume buttons + power button xD so now i was able to go to the android system recovery... but... when i tryed to select "reinstall packages" says Can't open /sdcard/update.zip (no such file or directory) Instalation aborted.
So i maked sure it was there, i even enabled the option to see extensions of the files so it gets to be "update.ZIP". But there was nothing different.

The update.zip MUST be on the phone's INTERNAL memory.
When you connect your phone to your pc via USB and mount it, you have to put the update.zip in the root directory of the phone's internal sd card, not the physical sd card.
Because of Android's way of doing things, it refers to its own internal memory as an sd card too.
Like Axis of reality is saying.
Interesting to see multiple ways of getting into recovery mode. Why don't they may it the same?
Thnaks everyone!
Finally i was able to do it. So the update.zip had to go in the sdcard like @AXIS of Reality said. But not only that, seems i had to modify the updater-script, adding the model of my phone. I ended up having this "Superuser Permission" app but when i try to open it the screen stays black.
Well anyways, thnx @eaglesteve for the patience and @AXIS of Reality for ur help xD
Hi Folks
My tab only stuck Android logo, ask for password. i enter password then again comes android logo and nothing
I tried hard reset combination. but none worked for me. is there any solution to this problem ?
a solid hard reset combination ? or a rom which will recover my device from this state ?

Sounds like you'll need to try to do a factory wipe from recovery and then flash a zip of the stock rom (which you'll need to copy to your SD card)
Did forget your own password or buy this one hot?

Did you try a full wipe of the tablet? Hold down the volume up key and the power button until the tablet vibrates. Release the power button while still holding the volume up key, and slide the screen lock button (next to the volume up key) to the right and then back to the left.
The screen should display 'Erasing Userdata', you can then release the volume key. It should then erase the cache, Acer says it can take 5-10 minutes to complete. The tablet should then reboot, and you may be able to get in from the stock settings.
If the tablets hangs at 'Erasing Cache' for more than 15 minutes, force a power down by holding in the power key. The try the power/volume/lock routine again.

What doesn't work exactly? Did you get an error during installation? Or was installation successful but the problem still exists?

I have the same issues. I have tried installing new roms, and still get the same issues. Any ideas would be great
I just got done going through the proccess of installing the updateable ROM from XBmod and YukiXDA can continue to have issues with the buttons.
The "Readme" file says the button layout should be the same as on all the other ROMS with the green button being the camera button. So far with using both versions of the ROM they provided I have had no luck. The green button doesn't do anything but activate voice dialing when held down for a second.
Can anyone help me please?
You have a soft button in camera, why do you need a hard button ...it can sometimes unnecessarily get switched on in pocket

Yeah see that. I was hoping for the hard button. Oh well, Thanks, I think the fact that it was 2:30am (hour # 20 of my day) I just wasn't paying attention.
I did have one other big problem. Once I updated to 7720, the phone would continuously reboot itself. It wasn't just a shutdown and restart, it would revert back to it's initial bootup settings. I wouldn't have to set up the phone but it would wipe any changes that I made to it (ie: apps downloaded, apps pinned to the start screen, etc...).
I followed the steps as to a "T", has anyone else had this problem or is there possibly something I can do to fix it?
download cab file from here http://xboxmod.sylvester20007.com/cabs/keymapping/
in first txt file you have layout so pick one that you like and update
it worked for me

If you've activated "find my phone" on SkyDrive, go to https://devices.live.com. Select your phone in the list, then Find My Phone. That takes you to a page where, among other things, is an option entitled "Erase my phone". This is a factory reset. You'll lose all your data, but you'll get your phone back.

Advanced config 1.4 broke my xaps!
After checking the enable wifi n and prevent re-lock buttons in "tweaks" and rebooting, all my xaps don't work!
It happened with 1.3 too and I posted this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1275303
Have since tried to send unlock_remove.cab then unlock.cab as XBmod suggested but no joy. Had to go back to restore point and reload apps, music etc.
I have posted this on Schap's site.
Points to note; If everything is working fine with you, send any cab using (B)ackup, it is your friend. And don't try to enable wifi n or prevent re-lock using Advanced Config.
Edit; confirm the prevent re-lock as culprit
Hello!
So the problem started today, when my phone got shutted down ( because battery was 4%.. ) and when i was able to charge it, this sh#t started.
So, some things first:
- I'm not able to get to the place ( phone off -> volume down and turn phone on ) where i could flash wp6.5 or do task29
- I couldn't enter into rom because it froze to the part where HTC is green with black background
- Rom worked with safe mode
- USB flasher doesn't work in malgdr
- Buttons are messy ( but i have now figured how they work )
- I*M NOT ABLE TO HARD RESET, when it says " press volume up to reset ", it does nothing. I have to take off the battery to get off there.
+ I'm able to go to AD recovery, and do anything there
+ I'm able to use USB MassStg
So what can I do? Or what should i do? This is really sad to me. I've flashed roms since March with great succes, but now I face a problem like this in normal use. So i'm pretty confused.
I'm able to take some video if you need it.
Not sure did i make it to the right section, but i hope i made.

What you are talking about is called bootloader and this is probably caused by a faulty volume down button. Unless you check the hardware for the volume down button and fix it if it is faulty there is no other fix for this issue unless you are using Windows Mobile then you can use the enterbootloader.exe.

It froze on what is called the splash screen and this is not all in all just a major issue and can more than likely be fixed.

This is probably a driver issue and is only needed to flash a Android recovery or to flash a Windows Phone ROM.

I assume you are using a Android ROM because you said you can still use AD recovery. I suggest you read the first couple of post in the thread for the ROM you are using to find the suggested partition size you need as you may not have the right partition size if that is the case you will need to re partition your device but without being able to use USB flasher you will not be able to flash a new recovery with your new partition size. But you you should be able to edit a recovery and use it with AD sd, look in my guide linked in my sig for more infor on using recovery from SD card.
Also you can try to do a wipe of your cache and delvik cache and see if that helps. You can also try to make a backup of your ROM and re flash the Android ROM to see if that helps.
But to be honest with you your situation is odd because it did not happen right after you flashed a ROM. This sorta leads me to beleive you may have hardware issues.
LOL, when i started the phone today, the buttons worked normally. In Malgdr & AD recovery.
Of course, i tried to go to bootloader and I did. After that I flashed WM6.5 succesfully.
I'm going to upload a video about this all today or tomorrow. Rendering the video just now.

Still, back and "windows" button are bugging. Sometimes when i press them, they change the volume and the real volume buttons do the same.
Edit 2: You can watch the video here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mDMZQRzcZmM

LOL, when i started the phone today, the buttons worked normally. In Malgdr & AD recovery.
Of course, i tried to go to bootloader and I did. After that I flashed WM6.5 succesfully.

I watched the video and I gotta say I think you have hardware issues. I would recommend you find someone to take a lookk at you volume buttons and the hardware buttons to see about fixing them. Both sets of buttons are replaceable.
I'll try to take care of that.
Thank you really much !
