I'm not sure if this is normal or not. I just got my Cingular 8125 and the wifi is very slow. I don't know how to measure the actual speed but for instance on my broadband connection, going to Google.com opens up in about a second. On dial up it takes about 5 seconds. However, on my phone using wifi, it takes about 20 seconds. When using wifi on my laptop, it is comparable to my broadband speeds my router is connected to.
I have pretty slow GPRS service as well and wifi is comparable.
I get the same slow speed on 802.11b as well as 802.11g networks (g network with registry hack)
Is this normal? The wifi speeds with the unit brand new out of the box was very slow. I flashed the rom and even overclocked to 240, the wifi internet is still painfully slow. I don't really find this useable. If I go to a page with images and such it can take a minute or so.
Anyone have any suggestions? Are others getting good speed on wifi. I tested by watching a streaming video and the speed shown on the bottom of windows media was 18k.
Were my expectations too high? Is there a setting I have incorrect?

Always best to be sure that you are actually using the wifi connection - Try disconnecting the gprs first before you connect to wifi. I have an issue where if I leave my gprs connection enabled all the time it takes precedence over my wifi no matter what.

Tried that but still no luck. When connected by wifi, I see the little wifi icon on the title bar. When connecting to GPRS, it shows the E and actually a pop-up saying it is connecting to GPRS. This part is actually working great. Uses wifi by default when wifi is on and GPRS is not.
I did try to disable GPRS entirely but still get the same slow results.
I also changed the wifi setting to maximize performance instead of save battery life. Didn't seem to matter.
I may experiment with Opera Mini or something to see if I can get some improved speeds.
no problems with wifi here. getting a faster connection than GPRS, even at hotspots.
I had a problem with my wifi connection in that the DHCP server giving out an incorrect address for one of the DNS servers. This made the wifi slow, because Internet Explorer kept on trying to lookup the IP of a host using the broken DNS, and then falling back to the second in the list.
You try specifying a DNS server manually to diagnose the problem.

Believe it or not the support for this product from HTC, the mfgr, is great and fast! That being said, I like most users have spent days hunting for solutions to the problem and you will not find them anywhere. But here is the solution:
First you must have an unlimited account for data usage or forget your WiFi...well at least simply. Also, you must get Cingular to flip a switch for your 8125 to automatically switch from WiFi to GPRS and back depending on what is the best signal. It works great once the switch is set.
The only way I found to do this was to call support and make sure you get to the HTC support group. They will guide you quickly through getting setup but you must tell them about the switch so they call Cingular and have the switch set. For some reason Cingular, no surprise, does not seem to know about this when they sell you the plan and the phone.

Thank you so much. This sounds like the solution I'm looking for. So are you saying to call HTC support and they will contact Cingular to have the switch set on my behalf?? Or do I just call Cingular and tell them to "turn the switch on"?
I do have an unlimited GPRS for data usage.
what a crock of steaming brown stuff :x .... what exactly does wifi have to do with your telco? ... nothing. There maybe some registry entry that Cingular have set when the device ships which causes poor WiFi speeds but your GPRS data plan has nothing to do with WiFi data, unless you are talking about connecting to Cingular WiFi hotspots. The only changes needed will be on your device not within the Telco network.
before calling support, try this:
Go to comm mgr and turn off the phone. Then turn on WiFi and let it connect. Check your speed with www.2wire.com. If your speed is still slow, and another PC connected to that HotSpot isn't (test the PC with 2wire also) then your 8125 is bad.
Using the WiFi icon v.s. the "E" icon is no way to determine what wireless system you're using btw...

Ok, I tried 2wire. My laptop connected to my wifi network and clocks in at 3.2Mbps and my 8125 is showing 221 kbps. multiple tests showed 228, 205, 220). Perhaps it is unrealistic to expect similar speed as my laptop.
I turned the com manager phone back on and connected via GPRS and the speed test came back at 64.8 kbps.
So it does look like this method is working. I can live with 221 kbps.
By the way, I emailed Cingular and HTS. I got the following response from Cingular:

There is an additional setting that you need to enable/disable manually every time you switch between GPRS and Wi Fi, please take a look at it:

I think it's always going to be slow because of the way the phone is designed. Probably small bus interface. My friend has a 6700 wich cpu wise is pretty much the same based on comparison but his is much faster through wifi.

small bus interface? for heavens sake... you have heard that there is something called a "bus" inside computers and that it is used to "transfer data" and this "bus interface" is small in the qtek so it is a viable candidate to blame slow transfers on.

the main reason for the horrid speed of the 9100 is the stupid software design where every system call in a program gets interrupted by the os which in turn, after checking who-knows-what, in the name of "security" and "stability", and then executed. Of course this hinders performance dramaticaly without affecting stability and security a single bit: it still crashes. the difference is that it is also slow.
I'm running Xelencin's custom 2.17 ROM for T-mobile on my 8125. His ROM sets the device up to work with an 802.11 g wifi connection. I kid you not - I have measured 900 to 1200 Kbps on my wifi at home (comcast) and at work (T1). It's blazing fast.
To measure your speed, go to www.dslreports.com. Click on the lowfi version at the top of the page. Then click on speed test. Then choose either 600K or 1 MB and then let it do the test.
You may have some setting wrong.
I have an 'adhoc' wireless network (running at 11Mbs) and i stream large lossless (FLAC) audio files to my Squeezebox 3 wireless music player with no issues whatsoever.
However, the MDA can't cope at all. FLAC files play great from the MiniSD, but wifi performance is worse than terrible.
Yes, the wifi speed of the MDA is s**t.
That said, if anyone has any tips on how to increase perfomance please let me know!

My Wifi would not work at all when I updated my ROM but this utility fixed that and sped things up. I recommend backing up your device before executing because I have only tried this on QTEK 9100 with a beta 2.8 ROM.

Excuse me for my ignorance... But then how do you explain that the 6700 can handle 700kb wireless while 9100's usually around 220kB? The Intel proc on the 6700 seems comparable to the Omap,no?

Reconfiguring DNS may make a significant improvement?
I came across your post after my own concerns with my I-mate K-Jam (Wizard) WiFi performance. My GPRS connection was at least twice as fast.
My problem was that is was taking at least 30~60 seconds to locate a web page and another 10~15 seconds to open the page. Once connected it seemed to work OK but operation via GPRS was still faster.
My K-Jam has a ROM that permits G connection and my AP is set to G only. After reading all the articles in this post (and others), I ran the 600K download at DLSreports.com. To my surprise, my download rate was actually + 500kbit/sec which lead me to believe I might have DNS issues.
I used vxUtil (http://www.cam.com/windowsce.html) to check my DNS settings. My primary DNS being picked up from my DSL modem was the DSL modems gateway address which works fine in my Toshiba laptop. My secondary DNS was my ISP's backup.
I reconfigured my DSL modems DHCP server so that the DNS servers being dished up to my K-Jam are my ISP's primary and secondary servers and I performed a soft reset.
The speed increase was substantial! Pages are located and opened within 5 seconds now making my WiFi connection useable.
This may be worth a try for others with similar issues?

Once your phone reads "Connected", you can open up your favorite browser, or anything else that may require an internet connection, and go at it. You've just skipped out on the $39 monthly tethering charge.
I've actually done this with my Mogul, and got speeds between 1100-1300kb/s down and about 300kb/s up.

This is a feature built in WM, however, don't get it confused. If you're running the standard Sprint ROM, they can detect you tethering, so don't be surprised one day to get a large bill.
But, agreed this is a easy way to connect, but you may want to look at some custom roms, or research other options if you need to use this.
Oh, btw those speeds must be a typo. I'm using Sprint and currently connected using Internet Sharing and while I might occasionally get 1MB download speeds, I average around 400Kbps - 800 Kbps in Hampton Roads, VA area

There are some unlimited broadband offer but all sucks (even we can't get real 3G / HSDPA speed right here)

in 2006 when Vodafone was lanuched in S.A they had a free Unlimited Internet However it only worked through proxy and was only limited to the phone when tryin to tether it brought a blank page. So When you change UA 0n IE or FireFox to Like Nokia6680/2.0 It w0rkeD so change maybe changing UA of the browser SPrinT May n0t b able to detect if ur tethering you could also try www.your-freedom.net it worked when vodafone live was ristricted to Phone Browser UA

Ok, I could never get the "internet sharing" to work on x1 with my friends laptop cause i dont have the drivers...so always used Wifirouter.
I find it a little slow, but it works and does work well. However, I read that the x1 supports "HSDPA, 7.2 Mbps; HSUPA, 2 Mbps" ...but i dont get speeds like that.
If somebody has the files required for connecting the x1 to a laptop and use internet sharing instead of wifirouter...can you upload and post it here? I will then keep them on my storage card for safe keeping.
Also, how do you find internet sharing? Is there any difference in speed compared to wifirouter?

I think HSDPA is simply network dependent -when its there you get an H symbol on your signal strength (taskbar) ...when its not there you get the next best thing (3G) and if that's not available you're stuck with plain old slow GPRS (G)
Internet sharing works well for me (obviously depends on the connection you have on the X1 -as above) ...have not used wifirouter so can't say how they compare
7.2 Mbps is theoretical maximum. Your provider is not obliged to provide you with this speed. I get about 1 Mbps for download.
Actually you don't need special drivers for the X1 in order to use tethering. Just connect the X1 to a PC using an USB cable and start the "Internet Sharing" Application on the Xperia. Within the application select "USB Connection" and choose your preconfigured ISP connection profile - é voilà. You will notice that the Xperia appears as a network adapter on the PC. I use that a lot.
Regarding the speed: It really depends on your mobile network. Though my network provider (Vodafone Germany) has some spots where 7,2 MBit/s should be available, I have never had such fast download rates - it's more like 2-3 MBit/s which is still quite okay for me. And even if the network would be capable of such fast transfer rates, the speed will be reduced by the more clients use the same cell.
I also read somewhere (guess it was on SE offical site) that using HSDPA and HSUPA together will limit the download speed to 3,6 MBit/s. So you might want to switch HSUPA off and use HSDPA only - at least it's worth a try if you're sure that your operator provides such fast transfer rates. I always have both switched on.

I've used my X1 on a few machines with ICS, drivers have always installed automatically (Generic NDIS I think it says), and that's on XP, Vista and Windows 7. No setting up with activesync etc, just plug in and start ICS.
I've started using WMwifirouter now though as it's easier, I don't carry a USB cable with me all the time, and you never know when it'll come in useful!
Random example... me and a couple of mates decided to learn some songs to play at our local, we had chords and lyrics for all except one, we were in a garage, my mate had his macbook, but couldn't pick up his wifi.
I started WMwifirouter and voila!
Speed wise, I usually get around 1Mbps, depending on signal etc, I've seen no difference between USB and wifi sharing.
How is the battery consumption when using WMWifiRouter, e.g. how long does the battery last? I can imagine this is the worst use-case at all, because you have WiFi active and HSDPA in parallel.
The big advantage when using an USB connection is that the battery is charging while it's connected, though the WiFi method is much more comfortable and flexible.
you do know that 7.2Mbps mega bits per sec? and not megabytes.

Actually you do not need a cable, you can have the phone to act as a bluetooth modem through the internet connection sharing , no drivers required what so ever, you will need to pair your phone with the laptop first make sure, that Bluetooth PAN client is checked on the laptop, then start the internet connection sharing on the phone and make sure that you are using bluetooth PAN, and you will have instant access on your laptop, No drivers, No cables
assuming the laptop has bluetooth
wifi is much more standard, so it's handy to have.
The best part here is non of these mrthods are mutually exclusive, so you can use whichever is best for the situation. USB is handy as ICS does drain power, using wifi for it makes my X1 extremely warm...

Yes, thats what comes up...but it wont auto install. Tried it on three laptops and they all wont work haha. I rebuilt the machines/laptops so even tho all drivers are installed (device manager)...maybe i left some out.
I was hoping somebody on the forum would know where i can find these drivers?

Generic NDIS is one of the system files in windows found under system32, windows will not boot even in safe mode if these drivers are not loaded, ICS works fine as far as i can tell with no extra drivers on any windows XP or later

Ive owned my x1 for about 6months, I have unlimited pda data plan but not tethering plan with my carrier. For some reason I can teather my x1 to my eeePC 901 via USB,but not BT,and get internet when Im not in a wifi spot. It does give me the BT PAN option and my devices are paired but cant get internet connection, only thru USB. Ive tried this multi times for over a month now and have not been charged any data usage or overage on my bill.
I was about to do the r3a update, but was wondering if there was any ninja fixes in this update. Id hate to lose this ability just for a little faster performance.

You DO need ActiveSync to be installed before you can use your X1 for ICS.
I tested it yesterday on my Windows XP SP3 laptop: When you connect your WM6 mobile with the ICS program running on it, WinXP demands for a plain Generic NDIS driver but won't find a suitable one. But during ActiveSync installation (version 4.5 worked for me), the USB drivers are updated, and afterwards my X1 got recognized as a "Windows Mobile Internet Connection Sharing Device" or something like that.
ActiveSync is not active during ICS session, but its prior installation is mandatory for it to work.

I've not had any issues tethering to my Laptop, you can use either aNetShare or Wireless Tether for Root users. Best to connect the G1 via miniUSB too to your laptop to save battery while in use.
I tether at hotels or on my travels to write posts etc although the main sites I visit I can just use the G1 anyway.
Ooooooooh this is for tethering, via I remember using the AdHoc method my ex-iPhone.
I thought it was a way to activate adhoc so the phone could connect to any adhoc connection. Like when I tried to connect my G1 to my friends N95 so I could use 3G connection (yeah got very bored in class one day )

When I transfer file usung file sharing betwen two laptop I m getting speed abt 3Mb/s but when i transfer file between laptop and SGS I only get speed of 300 Kb/s. It's a mobile device, they have lower throughput and probably only 1 antenna (most 802.11n devices have 3). There are a lot of factors, but basically, all that's important is that it supports the 802.11n protocol. Optimisation may lead to faster speed boosts over time though.
Network traffic might also be set to a low priority to help ensure the phone runs reliably for other tasks, but I have no idea why exactly it's slower exactly.

87 Mbps according to mine

87 seems too much I only get 25 while copy file on hard drive it self

that's actually low for me, but is better than nothing
my PC down in the cine room gets around 218+ Mbps
I get about 80Mbps laptop <-> network (802.11n 5Ghz), and about 5Mbps SGS <-> network (802.11n 2.4Ghz). Not horrible, but certainly not wonderful. I wish it had a 5Ghz radio too, so I could turn off my 2.4Ghz stuff :-/

Since my phone is on it's way to the repaircenter I would like to ask you all this Question.
I have problems with my wifi connection. The strange thing is, is that my router is brandnew! b+g+N!!!
The weird part is that it has only problems with the N-band
SO I hooked up another wireless router only with the b+g band and BAM it works.
But that's just messed up to have 2 wireless routers one for laptops and one just for my mobile phone...
So can u try the same thing and give me your comments about this issue?

however one topic we did not touch base on, on the other topic was about the B+G bands
if you read the documentations you'll noticed that for N to work at full speed, it must only listen to N no B no G
when you use Mix mode, N doesn't work well
to use N, you need 2 bands, B + G only needs 1 band
if you enable all 3 B+G+N you only get 1 band for all, so making the N useless
the trick is to update all your old hardware that still runs G or B to N
then you can use pure N, and gain full speed
the SGS phone can run up to 87 Mbps on N
meanwhile computers can go up to 280+ Mbps

Can't connect to home WPA2 wifi
Hello!
The problem is that I've been trying to connect to my home wifi like 100 times or more, but I'm still unable to get it working... The wifi it's WPA2 and it has a long sentence password...
Any ideas? Thank you!

Maybe you need to shorten your password to try.

Hey, like many Android users I'm often having problems with Wifi not connecting to APs. While that can be fixed by restarting Android that takes a lot of time and is more than annoying. There are some apps to solve this issue, they "fix" wifi whenever the screen is turned on (e.g. http://www.appbrain.com/app/wifi-fixer/org.wahtod.wififixer http://www.appbrain.com/app/blade-wifi-fix/com.bladewififix).
That however I don't like either as due to the fixing taking place always wifi connection becoming established takes quite a lot of time. So my question: Is there an app that fixes the wifi connection but does so only manually, e.g. by clicking a widget button?

I select my Wifi network, I enter in the password, it says connecting, authenticating, connected, remembered, then it says disconnecting, searching, authenticating, and it repeats. The H at the top never disappears, no Wifi icon ever appears, what is the issue exactly?
And yes, I am connecting to a Wireless-G signal.
Don't worry I can't connect to your home network either so it's not a problem with your phone
I suggest you delete the password from the router and try and connect .
If you connect setup again with the password .

I had the same problem and i manage to fixit with "WIFI STATIC". It's free on Market. Access your router config and add your Galaxy Mac adress, then fill the parameters in WiFi Static. It Works! Never had problems again! Oh, i think you have to put your's computer(s) mac adress too in the router.
is there really no such app? :-(
