I'm at&t user right now and considering to buy htc evo 4g with sprint.
All of my friends are using either at&t or verizon so I don't have any idea about sprint.
Is sprint 3g coverage in columbus ohio good enough to use?
Thanks for any advice.
on the sprint official website they have a coverage map.
When I went to Easton, the 3G works just fine. It works well in the Lancaster area also.
I seen somewhere that Columbus / Cincinnati are suppose to get 4G this year..
nice i'm in cincinnati oh
Cinci and Cleveland are first in Ohio, sprint.com/4g for more info.... good to know I'll have 4G when I come back to see the family.

I live in Licking County and for the most part coverage is very good. I get a couple bad spots when driving across the county...
I work in Columbus and get very good service but it can get spotty when inside buildings when in downtown Columbus. The weird thing is I'll be standing next to someone with at&t or verizon and their service is good.... I'm starting to think sprints signal is weaker and has trouble penetrating buildings bc of this! It happens to me all the time bc I'm downtown ALOT. Once outside of the buildings, my Sprint service is great and pretty decent 3G speeds.
I live in Columbus (westerville) and got an HTC HERO for my wife and used it for a few days, no coverage problems thoughout the easton(ish) area and also drive up past marysville on 33 and no problems on the drive.
I have since given her HERO up and am awaiting the EVO
To the poster above me: what sprint phone are you currently on and what phones were the other people using? You would be surprised on how much difference a phone can make in reception, not just the network
Im also near the cincinnati area in butler county ohio. Ive been wondering how far the 4g coverage would extend. In between cincinnati and dayton. ?? Any ideas?

I have seen near the same results from the samsung instinct to my current Palm Pre. With me Pre getting a little better signal than the instinct.
When noticing the differences with Sprint coverage versus at&t & the iphone 3G and the Droid on Verizon. I have noticed them getting much stronger signals indoors downtown columbus in a few different locations.
It kinda rubs me the wrong way but with the difference in $$$, I get over it b/c indoors in downtown columbus is my worst spot....I've already contacted Sprint about each location and they've marked it for a ticket and will research it.

Considering trading in my Nexus One with T-Mobile for an EVO with Sprint mainly becuase I'm sick of always being on edge with T-Mobile but I will be highly dissapointed if I face the same situation with Sprint. Anyone have experience with Sprint in the Miami/Ft. Lauderdale area? Is 3g coverage pretty consistent or will I contantly be forced down to 2g like I currently am with T-Mobile?
Thanks for any advice.
sprint is great in miami/broward i never have connection problems, i have only ever had problems inside my actual home because of the postions of the towers in relation to my actual house, but every where else i have between 3-5 bars, and when i use to work at dolphin stadium all the way on the bottom floor i had full signal so yeah.
sprint is great in miami/broward..and i agree t-mobile is pretty slow for us
S Fl is one of Sprint's strongest markets. I was in Hollywood/Pembroke, and got nothing but great signal from there up to Jupiter.
Sprint on average is very strong in florida. I wouldn't worry.
I live in Miramar, and I usually get decent coverage outside...
..that being said, I can't get a single bar of coverage inside this house. Getting an Airave delivered to solve that problem. Make sure you test whether you'll really get good reception in the area where you live, because I'm supposedly right across the street from one of Sprint's towers.
Sprint in my opinion, has better coverage on 3G in S. Florida than at&t and all their hype. I moved from at&t back to Sprint and gave up my iPhone because the service from at&t was so bad. With Sprint, I can be anywhere and I always get my calls and the voice clarity is second to none. Don't hesitate to switch to Sprint. If you can't get good signal in your home, you can buy a femtocell from Sprint that hooks into your Broadband and you get a solid signal. They'll help you out. It's not the Sprint it used to be years ago, that's for sure.

Crap, are you serious? On a side note I had my phones activated and delivered from Wirefly; do you think a PRL update would resolve this coverage problem?

I don't know man, since i flash android in my vogue, i haven't got in roaming anymore.
my mom lives in goulds (aka cutler ridge), i live in hollywood, go to school in boca, and work in miramar. not a single problem theres a single dead spot on 175 and weston for like 10 seconds lol but thats about it. ive driven to orlando and tampa nothing! my at&t phone tends to drop signal like crazy when i travel. and if your buying your phone from sprint pm me go to my damn store lol
Thanks for the info everyone. I went ahead and pre-ordered from Sprint's employee program (Save 10 bucks a month that way). Just got off the phone with the girl, looks like I most likely won't get the phone until Saturday unless Sprint decides to ship the phone early, crossing my fingers but not getting my hopes up on that one LOL
4g will be nice but I will be happy if I can just stay connected to 3g and not constantly be forced onto the older 2g/edge service like is constantly happening to me on T-Mobile.
wait since when was sprint doing pre-orders???
I actually heard a rumor a good chunk of FL gets 4g come the first half of next year. Heard from a sprint rep that could actually count higher than 12.
So the magic question is when will Sprint light up the 4G towers in Miami? Do we really have to wait until next year? If so then it makes little sense for me to jump to Sprint now. Atleast in the North Miami/Aventura area, the 3g signal/downloads speeds were pretty bad compared to Verizon/ATT. This was using a Sprint Express card for notebook.
At my home in Haverhill, MA it works like a charm outside....full boat signal and it flies speed wise.
Walk in the house and the signal drops to a fragile connection.
Assuming it was just a fluke at my house, I tried it this morning in Boston as well while going to a project meeting.
Same thing...wonderful signal outside with great up and down speeds....walk indoors and POOF...it's gone.
What good is it if it only works OUTDOORS?
Are others finding this issue as well?
I have started a thread on the SPRINT website about this as well since it seems that SPRINT actually does monitor those threads and gives them attention...

That's because WiMax operates on a 2.5GHz band, which is terrible for penetrating structures and solid materials. This has to do with the wavelength being used -the waves are more likely to be blocked/absorbed by particles in the material than to diffract around them.

QFT - they should have used a licensed band of radio spectrum. Oh well, I'll never see 4G at my house anyway.
Here in Las Vegas, the Clear 4G market has been active for over a year. I have full 4G bars at home, inside and out. I have 1-2 bars of 4G at work, inside and 3-4 bars, outside. I had the Clear service until Sprint came out with these Epic 4G phones.
Have you used the Sprint tool to monitor 4G coverage for your area? The green cloud is pretty accurate in showing exactly where you get only outside coverage and where you get inside building coverage as well. I can attest to it's accuracy. My home in Texas is barely in the outside green coverage and no inside coverage at all. My son verified that he cannot get the signal indoors, but can get it outdoors.
As the market matures in MA, you will see more towers "turned on" to provide better 4G coverage. That did happen here in Vegas!

2.5 Ghz is licensed spectrum. Perhaps you're thinking of 2.4 Ghz?
Ditto on Vegas being great on 4g coverage... I was out there for a week... stayed on the 12th floor and all the way down to the casino I had screamin fast internet... I just wish sprint would pick up the pace on LA - OC coverage... suppoedly wimax towers were going to be put on every walmart, wonder if that's still gonna happen
Awkwardly, the evo never had the issue.. I did notice one thing, the power of the signal is weak but that's cause it might not be an official band.

I live in a "4G" city, and I am disappointed. According to Sprint's coverage maps I'm supposed to have 4G inside my home, but I don't. Also, driving even on freeways has dead pockets.
That forces me back to 3G, which on the Epic has well-documented poor performance, especially on uploads.
I do get decent 4G indoors in a downtown office. When 4G is hot, it's hot -- about twice the 3G speeds I got with T-Mobile's HSPA+ on a Vibrant. But T-Mobile's 3G service is more consistent, with better infill coverage and indoor penetration. Overall, I think I got better real-life service with the #4 carrier. I may go back.

Im getting the Epic today in the mail, and ive already been missing tmob. The vibrant did get great speeds and in a wider coverage area. If im dissatisfied with the service in two weeks, ill just get another vibrant.
I live in Vegas and the WiMAX service sucks the big one. You can't maintain a connection while driving and because data doesn't smoothly transition, you get horrible data service. It's the outdoors network. Suburbs, no 4G, buildings without a 4G tower perched up next to it, no 4G.. driving down the street, no 4G. It's really poor. Sprint 3G coverage is ok, but the 4G is just plain horrible and there are no signs of it improving soon. They've colocated on all of the towers they can, so they will be building new ones if they want better coverage and as of right now cash is low at Clear.

I'm a little surprised the network is "launched" in DC, where it's so spotty I cannot get coverage at work (south of Dupont Circle) or at home (Waterfront) despite what the Clear map shows. Very frustrating.
even worse for me..im in an area that says "inside connection" and is dark blue..yet every time i turn on 4g.it will try to connect..then it may connect..and as soon as i pick up the damn phone..i get a "4g disconnected"..ish sucks man..very dissapointed
Here's a little one about how sprints gonna drum up a lil more money and help out good ol #4 in the process http://www.mobiledia.com/news/73500.html

T-Mobile isn't doing anything 4G until 2012. They've already stated it. To help out number #4 you'd actually have to be the one able to give the help. Sprint isn't building a 4G network for a reason. They can't afford to. Sprint is only #3 because of Nextel, a horrible purchase.

DC isn't an official 4g market Sprintwise so don't blame them yet.. I know there's service and I am also from the area and felt comfortable paying extra because I knew there was some service, but no point in complaining if Sprint hasn't advertised your city.
Buyer beware! For some reason Richmond, VA is covered...

Why is it that sprint over the years has only put 4g in PARTS of new york. New York is a pretty big state and has many parts. im located on Long Island and theres no 4g at all. so far the only 4g iv seen in new york are very small parts in the city.
Give it some time...my cuzin lives in LI and he has no 4g also...but manhattan is the best for 4g reception everywhere else is kinda shifty with 4g service for now anyway.
I'd love some 4g in Nassau county please!

Theres definitely 4G in the Financial District, Midtown West, and a couple of parts of the Bronx. I actually get 4G in my new apartment which was great when I didn't have cable internet yet. I was able to play COD: Black Ops over tether!

yeah thats where i live also, nassau county. The funny thing is, the company i work for OWNS the legal rights for 4g in nassau county. So if phone companies want to put 4g anywhere on nassau county they have to lease the rights for it from my company.

I get good 4G in the large majority of Midtown only... Everywhere else it's either on and off always or just slow as turd.
(This was about 2 weeks ago when I took a break from CM to run Calkulin's, so I don't know if his ROM is a factor or not and I've since gone back to CM so my results are a bit inconclusive.)
Getting 4g right now in LIC.

I'm in midtown and 4G is horrible anywhere indoors in Manhattan due to the 2.5Ghz frequency and tall buildings.
That made my decision to switch to CM7 (no 4G support) about 100 times easier. I just don't care until they get it together.
I live in Brooklyn and i get full 4G everytime I'm outside... inside i mostly get 1 or 2 bars
Westchester cty
I live/work between Yonkers and White Plains, and my phone rarely drops back to 3g. I've been tethering at a steady 5-6 Mb/s.

Basterds!!!! I'm 40 mins west of albany, I'm expecting 4g in the fall of 2192.
Because I've been noticing that 4G is popping up in different areas without any sort of notification, I was thinking that we could all post here of areas that have 4G but have not been announced to the public.
I've noticed 4G in Norfolk VA in the Ghent area, and near Portsmouth Naval Hospital for starters.
Check http://www.clear.com/coverage for where 4G (WiMAX) access is available. It's not always publicised when new sites are implemented, but they will show up on the map.

I checked that map, it looks pretty good, but I'm not really sure, it is showing areas that should be active 4g locations, but I'm getting nothing in those areas... So really I guess what I was trying to get out of this thread was a place that people can post known active 4g (well at lest known to the poster) locations to help others know if 4g is active near them. A map is nice, but we all know that those mappings can definitely be off.

Understood, the coverage is spotty.
Works pretty good here in Jacksonville,Fl. Pretty big city so it is spotty in some areas though :/

Theres coverage here in Green Bay Wisconsin where i live granted it is very spotty theres still hope!
There is coverage here in Gurnee Illinois but its very spotty. It's funny the clearwire and sprint coverage map shows 4G in/near my house, but I can't connect to it until I drive around 5-6 Blocks then it pops up but soon as you go further down the street its gone.
Ive gotten pretty good coverage here in burbank, ca for about a year. Also had decent coverage when i visited sacramento.

yeah just check clear.com maps. They seem to be updated weekly. The plan is for a bunch of single towers in towns to show the FCC they are using their licenses.
The maps are geared towards the clear devices that have better antennas than the ones crammed into our handsets.
I've had excellent 4g coverage here in Vegas/Henderson for as long as I've had my Evo. I love it

I received that sprint premier email recently and it said 4g was in my area, sure enough it was NOT! I called sprint and the guy just kept telling me VERY soon. I asked him if there is a ETA or something like that and all he kept saying VERY soon! My zip is 11714.
I live in Roanoke, Va. And we don't have it and probably never will. T-mobile is the only on here with 4g and they have the worst coverage of the big 4...and they don't even have a store here...you have to go to wal-mart or radioshack to buy one of their phones...I hate Virginia...
Kalamazoo, MI has 1 tower near Western MI U campus....can connect to it for a 2nd near portage but it is very limited basically to the westside of town. But will be nice for Football games in the falls as it does cover the stadium.

I can't disagree about VA, I'm actually here from CA, and its like 2 different worlds, but just some advice, AT&T just bought T-mobile, sooooo, if you go with T-mobile, your service is going to get alot worse... Also the 4g in my area was in no way advertised, I just happened to find it, cuz my 4g was on, and all the sudden it connected.

All major (VZ, AT&T, T-Mobile) wireless carriers in Phoenix, AZ (5TH LARGEST CITY IN THE US) are 4G except Sprint. Only about 4 sq. mi of 4G in the whole metro/valley area. SAD!
Says that I am supposed to have coverage in NW Austin, TX but only get 1 bar or so.. and only if i'm outside. No coverage in buildings
Sprint 4g in Hampton Roads!
Yes, I live near W. Mercury Blvd. Near Jefferson Ave. in Southern Virginia (Newport News, Va.) and I get a pretty good 4G signal. But once I leave that area......let's say 1 to 2 miles is goes back to 3G. Something is going on in the area. Hopefully all will be online fully in the coming weeks!
When?!?! Does anyone have any idea if they even plan on having it here? I love how they advertise that they are the nations favorite 4g network, but they seem to have the least amount of coverage, and even their 3g signal here is pretty week. The only place in Michigan that has 4g is Grand Rapids, and that's almost 3 hours from Drtroit. Seems stupid to come to the state and not put it in the Detroit area. Verizon, ATT, & T-Mobile all have 4g coverage here. What is Sprint's major malfunction? Of course they have the weakest selection of phones too. Always seem a step behind everyone else.
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App
4G is basically at a standstill for Sprint right now. The company deploying the service only has funds to keep the lights on... No more building. Basically Sprint is suppressing them to get a better stock price and most likely buy them out.
Sprint actually does have 4g in a few places here in Detroit, they just dont advertise it yet because they don't have the network finished yet. Go to sensorly.com and look at the actual coverage maps. I was connected to 4g in warren yesterday on my evo.
You do know that sprint is supposed to be switching from Wimax to LTE. That will goof things up big time.

Thanks for the site. I just looked at it and am disappointed. I am just outside the coverage on there also. If only I lived a few miles to the East. I would be all set.
I use clear.com/coverage. They also have an app.
Here is the Sprint WiMax tower which has about 6 mile radius. Clocked 3.5Mbps down and 1.5Mbps up 200 feet from it. You can see the two 180 deg dishes pointing in both directions in this street view.
Here is the other in Centerline on Chrysler grounds. I haven't confirm it but from the clear.com website radius, center location would be in this spot. And here is the dish from the street view.
