Considering trading in my Nexus One with T-Mobile for an EVO with Sprint mainly becuase I'm sick of always being on edge with T-Mobile but I will be highly dissapointed if I face the same situation with Sprint. Anyone have experience with Sprint in the Miami/Ft. Lauderdale area? Is 3g coverage pretty consistent or will I contantly be forced down to 2g like I currently am with T-Mobile?
Thanks for any advice.
sprint is great in miami/broward i never have connection problems, i have only ever had problems inside my actual home because of the postions of the towers in relation to my actual house, but every where else i have between 3-5 bars, and when i use to work at dolphin stadium all the way on the bottom floor i had full signal so yeah.
sprint is great in miami/broward..and i agree t-mobile is pretty slow for us
S Fl is one of Sprint's strongest markets. I was in Hollywood/Pembroke, and got nothing but great signal from there up to Jupiter.
Sprint on average is very strong in florida. I wouldn't worry.
I live in Miramar, and I usually get decent coverage outside...
..that being said, I can't get a single bar of coverage inside this house. Getting an Airave delivered to solve that problem. Make sure you test whether you'll really get good reception in the area where you live, because I'm supposedly right across the street from one of Sprint's towers.
Sprint in my opinion, has better coverage on 3G in S. Florida than at&t and all their hype. I moved from at&t back to Sprint and gave up my iPhone because the service from at&t was so bad. With Sprint, I can be anywhere and I always get my calls and the voice clarity is second to none. Don't hesitate to switch to Sprint. If you can't get good signal in your home, you can buy a femtocell from Sprint that hooks into your Broadband and you get a solid signal. They'll help you out. It's not the Sprint it used to be years ago, that's for sure.

Crap, are you serious? On a side note I had my phones activated and delivered from Wirefly; do you think a PRL update would resolve this coverage problem?

I don't know man, since i flash android in my vogue, i haven't got in roaming anymore.
my mom lives in goulds (aka cutler ridge), i live in hollywood, go to school in boca, and work in miramar. not a single problem theres a single dead spot on 175 and weston for like 10 seconds lol but thats about it. ive driven to orlando and tampa nothing! my at&t phone tends to drop signal like crazy when i travel. and if your buying your phone from sprint pm me go to my damn store lol
Thanks for the info everyone. I went ahead and pre-ordered from Sprint's employee program (Save 10 bucks a month that way). Just got off the phone with the girl, looks like I most likely won't get the phone until Saturday unless Sprint decides to ship the phone early, crossing my fingers but not getting my hopes up on that one LOL
4g will be nice but I will be happy if I can just stay connected to 3g and not constantly be forced onto the older 2g/edge service like is constantly happening to me on T-Mobile.
wait since when was sprint doing pre-orders???
I actually heard a rumor a good chunk of FL gets 4g come the first half of next year. Heard from a sprint rep that could actually count higher than 12.
So the magic question is when will Sprint light up the 4G towers in Miami? Do we really have to wait until next year? If so then it makes little sense for me to jump to Sprint now. Atleast in the North Miami/Aventura area, the 3g signal/downloads speeds were pretty bad compared to Verizon/ATT. This was using a Sprint Express card for notebook.
Some users in the EVO forums are reporting 4G in the Lansing, MI area.
I'm currently on MSU's campus (East Lansing) and I'm seeing nothing... but I will be taking a trip downtown to confirm.

I'm in Holt (South Lansing) and I'm curious too...let me know what you find out! I'm hoping it's a little more widespread than just downtown Lansing, but not thinking it'll be more either.
I'm an East Lansing guy but this is still great news as I'm sure the bubble will eventually expand into East Lansing. I just checked the clear coverage map though and it looks like they are covering the southern part of MSU's campus which is basically all farmland...

Yeh... They are completely missing the actual part of campus where students are and the area where I live (north of campus).
I'm excited to see that its this close. The coverage areas for Grand Rapids have really grown since the initial rollout and hopefully this means something similar will happen for us. I'd love to put this $50 that I've paid (so far) over 5 months to good use....

Yeah, I noticed that...I was thinking the whole East Lansing/Okemos area would be getting all at the same time. I know the Sprint store out by the Meridian Mall said we'd have it within the 1st Quarter, but I just thought they were feeding me bull (and they probably thought they were too). I just was hoping that more of south lansing would be covered (Holt) and it isn't yet really. Hopefully soon! There are some weird parts of subdivisions that have 4G though, which is pretty weird...
EDIT: Also, if this is just the testing phase, once they actually "turn on" the 4G, will it expand and be at a higher signal strength? Just assuming that it would, but I have nothing to base that on...
Yeh, it looked like areas near MLK were covered which I was a little confused about... Doesn't seem like the market for 4g. Most of the stuff west of 127 seems like a waste to me right now unless they are targeting the areas to possibly replace dsl

Just ran across an app for mapping network coverage... Sensorly
I'll be running this as I drive around today, hopefully that will pick up a few areas and we 8am start to get a real feel for the coverage

Confirmed... But with a poor coverage area.
I'll post some pics when I get home. Overall though it was between 3 and 6mbit/sec
I'm very very happy about this finally coming here... Sadly I never once thought I'd get 4g before froyo

I live downtown a couple blocks from lcc and haven't picked up a 4G signal yet, I work at the meijer warehouse on creyts and also no 4G yet. It'll be nice when all of lansing is covered tho, my friends in GR are loving the speeds.

Not bad for a start... I really hope they can get this to the East Lansing / MSU Campus
Got a little 4G love in downtown Youngstown Ohio today for the first time. I attached a couple of images of the speed test results I got. Not the best speeds EVER but darn better then 3G. Thank You Sprint.
in Springfield here and i get nothing
Wow, didnt expect 2 ppl from NEO on here. Anyways, I dont think sprint cares much for anyone not in the three C's. I really thought we would get wimax here in akron when CLE went live.
Y-town? Nice. That's my hometown. Been in VA for about a year now though.
I tried in Campbell and got connected and got an IP. Signal quality was poor and I was only able to get 822kbps down. I couldn't even web browse because I was losing signal.
I got home on the south side and couldn't even connect to 4G.
Will we receive a text message from Sprint or any other indication when 4G is fully live here?
Went to YSU here, why the heck would sprint/clearwire waste money on 4g in Youngstown before Akron.

I would hardly consider it "wasting money". How about because its between Cleveland and Pittsburgh and they probably want 4G between the two. Seems to make sense to me. I love how some people feel their city is more important than all the others. Akron is not that great sorry.

Akron (inc. Metro) Population: 700k
Y-Town (inc. Metro) Population: 100k
It seems pretty obvious which NEO area should be next in line for 4G

Don't feel bad, SE Michigan towers over any other part of michigan with half the states entire population @ ~5 million people. No 4g love for us , and sprint just turned on 4g in flint, which is the most broke ass city in the state.
I am going to have to take a trip down to toledo to scope out their new 4g. At least you lucky bastards have like what 5 or 6 major cities covered

If I had my way I would turn on the whole state. I don't get it at my house so I would have to go down to the University to use it. We are renovating a plaza downtown so I might get to use it.

I dont even live in Akron I live in Cleveland and could care less about either city.
From a business standpoint I wonder why Youngstown would get 4g before Akron. I lived in Youngstown for 4 years for college I'm not trying to trash it. If they were actually going to add 4g all the way along the turnpike I would understand that but considering clear is teetering on bankruptcy I don't figure they have the money for that. And as someone else pointed out Akron has a significantly larger population and likely a similar area to cover although I haven't looked that up.

Whole state sounds good to me but isn't happening anytime soon.
Honestly I see most metro areas of the state getting it soon. I am in Springfield which is in between Columbus & Dayton. Dayton doesn't have it yet, but Columbus does. I hope they build towers west instead of going straight to Dayton. They will probably have Dayton go live and then fill in between. I could never expect my dying city to get 4g before Dayton. Maybe Sprints big announcement is going to be live 4g everywhere. A lot of places have been popping up lately & a lot of them are smaller too.

They should hit all of the cities around universities first -- the younger generation are the ones using the data the most and thus the ones that need it.
Next up should be: Akron and Kent.
My wife just turned her evo's 4g on and it connected! only 1 bar inside my house but hey. Just googled it and it says western michigan university just had it turned on on the 10th.

That marks 3 cities that have 4g before Detroit.
Sounds about right though, I wouldn't waste my time putting 4g in Detroit and I've lived in the suburbs all my life.

Actually that's hilarious....the coverage is in the poor areas.
Hamtramck, Detroit, Eastpointe, East Dearborn....oh and don't forget part of Windsor....
I dont think portage has it yet, I'll check downtown later. What area of kalamazoo are you in?
Good to hear about Kzoo. Detroit does not "officially" have 4g either. It works around Wayne State University, and that is about it. They seem to be testing it around the city, but it is far from consistent.

When people say Detroit they are generally speaking of the suburbs.
Since no one practically lives in the city anymore.
As far as your crime comment please point me in the direction of the part of my post that talked about crime.
Here was the point of my post :
It is a FACT that most of the city of Detroit is empty.
People have moved to the burbs and that's all there is to it.
Windsor isn't even in the U.S. and the other cities I mentioned aren't any better off than Detroit ...so why waste your time and START in an empty area??
O.O
Seriously?? I live about 20m from Kzoo i'm gonna have to go check this out.

A number that is likely still an overestimate, a good majority of those people likely don't even have cell phones.
I can't find any kind of breakdown unfortunately though.
At any rate, the point is this, they are rolling it out in areas that are largely empty.
There's been estimates that 40% of Detroit's city limits are empty for god sake.

Please do not bring race into this.
This has nothing to do with race.
All I'm saying is...why bother STARTING in an area that's generally vacant?
Seems to me, especially in Sprint's position, they want to service as many PEOPLE as possible, not just area.
If you have a problem with detroit then maybe you should move so that you don't have to live next to us. As far as the empty land goes we're starting a reverse annexing plan. Soon those empty areas will be a part of oakland and macomb countries.

no 4g in wyoming, mi where i am. closest i get it is in downtown grand rapids.
So, upon visiting a local Sprint store to attempt to preorder a Nexus S 4G, I was waiting for a Sprint rep to not be busy. This gave me time to look at the EVO on display (mainly because I wanted to compare my awesome Gingerbread to stock Froyo ).
I looked at the statusbar, and I noticed a 4G icon with some service...I instantly enabled 4G on my phone and was stoked because I highly doubted Gainesville would ever get 4G, so this made me think that only the Sprint store was broadcasting a small 4G signal to demonstrate the speeds to customers (pretty unlikely, I know), but upon leaving, I drove a few miles away, and still, I had full 4G service. As long as I am not in an area with an excessive amount of trees, I have decent service...soo happy
I guess I am one of the few using this service, because I have some pretty decent speeds for WiMax (about 2x what I have gotten in Tampa).
www.clear.com/coverage and zoom in random towers are popping up all over the county. Its "Clear on the go" coverage...
awesome i never thought they would have it there i live in tampa so i know how gainesville is crongrats!
you just made my day, been at UF all this time with my EVO and no 4G
LMAO i cant believe you guys didn't even try it i usually test everything where ever i go to see what i can connect to lol.
After months and months of nothing, you sort of give up on it. At least that's how I have been. But that Clear coverage link jefbal99 posted says there might be some a few miles away (Peoria, IL area). I'll have to drive to that area and see what I can get. But, even with zooming in, no antenna icons ever show up on the map, just light green. Maybe it's not as hopeless as I had figured.
Which Sprint store were you at when you connected?

The light green areas don't list the towers, just coverage. I can verify that every place I've been with light green gets 4G connection.
If you are on a Sense ROM, here is a good thread with info on making 4G connect with a weaker signal and stay connected longer. I used is successfully before my switch to CM7

I'm glad we finally got coverage in UF... what sucks is that they're using such a high frequency for the WiMax service. The signal just bounces off the walls and doesn't penetrate well into the buildings, especially the concrete UF buildings.
