Looks like Apps on SD are (more) secure. - Nexus One General

while they are accessible the .asec format that apps are stored as on the SD card (in .android_secure directory) are not just renamed apk files...
could this be the end of piracy?

End of piracy?
I doubt that. B-)

How do the pirates scrape the market so easily?
Just this morning, on a reputable site, I found a link (since taken down but the file is on usenet so it's not going away) to a 1.6GB file of paid market apps... that's gotta be just about every paid app on the market. And almost all of them seem to be very, very recent - example - Beautiful Widgets is the version released yesterday, and almost everything I've looked at has been updated for Froyo meaning the scrape has only happened in the last day or so.
Call me stupid but I can't imagine this is done manually by humans paying, downloading, installing, copying, uninstalling, refunding... :-/
No, I'm not going to share the file and yes, I pay for my apps.

I created an account few days ago and I logged in to reply just to say "thumbs up to you man!"

I am going to admit...I use to pirate apps... :-(
but now I find myself paying for apps because I truly support Android and I know the devs'll come where the money is...
and sadly I just found out that you can easily move the apps to the Phone and take them from there, but hopefully paid apps are all in this unreadable (As of yet) format...I'd welcome a 100% full stop to app piracy on Android...As long as it is coupled with a better payment system via the Market.

There is an old saying that you youngsters have likely not heard. It goes.... Locks dont keep people out. All locks do is keep honest men honest. So it is with anything. The encryption scheme is already beat, there was never any chance of that not happening.

Checking for updates (way I do it)

I thought it was common sense, but my buddy with a G1 was like "I didn't know you could do that!?"
OK... so... Go to MarketPlace, Menu key--My Downloads.... if it says installed, you're all good. If it says Install and is a program you HAVE installed? Click it. Will overwrite the old version automatically.
That is one way.... but a new app on the market it makes it one step easier. Install aTrackDog... I used the way you described before this came out... it makes your life soo much easier.

There are some reasons not to use aTrack Dog. I'm manually updating my apps for now. Maybe Google will refine the Market app with an update feature later.

Oh wow.. thanks! That's even worse!
Some apps (Twitdroid is a good example) alerts you if there's a new update; and most apps have contact details for the developer, so maybe drop them an email and ask for some auto update code to be added into your favourite apps? Bummer though, you still have to go into the market to update them.

Good point but then again... I personally want to know about others beta's, I think aTrackDog should do something thou... make it so all apps are defaulted to not update.
Either way I don't see any real reasons to not use it except that you should know it may show a beta version. The updates are fast usually everytime I open it there is at least one program on there.

True, I suppose it is a matter of personal preference. Since I only have a half dozen apps installed on my G1, it's rather trivial to just check the download list. I balance that against having yet another app installed, not to mention having my app installation habits data-mined by aTrackdog.

I am not a developer but can see a potential for an exploit on this maybe? Sending out info isn't ever really a good idea. Even if it's set to only send out this and that data, I have seen exploits take advantage of less.
Both valid points, but then again look at the stuff I can't uninstall LOL that can send out just as much info. Everything is a risk, and honestly maybe application mining my G1 is a good thing, might lead to more big name developers wasting money to make quality apps for cheap/free. Never know might make MS want to make an office suite... or better yet... openoffice doing it.

Yeah I wouldn't really hold my breath on OpenOffice for Android. Aside from the fact that most desktop apps have to be completely retooled to function in a mobile context, i'm sure Sun isn't too happy about Google brewing up Dalvik based on Java (which quite directly competes with J2ME). Dataviz is already working on an Android version of DocsToGo.
Of course if Google were to put more of their engineers on Android/mobile development, maybe we could see Google Docs for Android. Let's hope those Christmas Bonus Dreams lead to more apps Googlers make in their 20%.

Isn't openoffice made publically? (not the source but the actual development is by the general public) wouldn't that mean if enough got an android they could do it? LOL
And I bust up over the G1 for all Google employees. But then again that article made it sound like every employee normally gets 20,000 for Christmas *cough*bull*cough* I bet only the high ups got anywhere close to that and probably the lowers got 100 dollars and maybe some free software or something.

Actually it is an open source project. However project leaders have very broad discretion to guide the direction a project takes. A good example would be the Android Open Source Project.

Discussion thread: "Paid apps" are here!!!

I know the android market will start charging next week and I understand some apps have an expiration date on them and eventually they will expire. So this may not work for those apps and I could be totally wrong in my theory.
I'm going to try not updating my apps for a month or so because I fear some of the apps that were meant to be free the developer may decide to start charging and with an update put an expiration date on that app.
I know one app did this already. I forgot the name but it had the planet saturn as the icon and it was meant to be free but the developer decided to start charging and make it a demo version with an update. He got flamed in the comments and eventually took his app down.
Call me cheap but about 90% of the apps I have are not worth paying for but they are nice to have.
PLEASE POST ANY APPS THAT HAS STARTED CHARGING WITH AN UPDATE OR HAS TURNED INTO A TRIAL VERSION WITH AN UPDATE.
NOTE: I HAVE NOT TRIED SOME OF THESE APPS TO CONFIRM THE CHANGE. I AM SIMPLY GOING BASED OFF OF THE POSTS. PLEASE NOTIFY OF CORRECTIONS.

Force Ring (If you still have it keep it. Is not look for stats555's sig.)
SMS Commander (The original app is dead. The developer has put the new app in the market. Dont uninstall the original.)
Park Mark (It was originally updated to a demo and now the words demo have been removed from the description. I don't know if it is a demo or not anymore. Keep pre demo.)
Dog Catcher Beta (If you downloaded it before you had to pay for it... there is no prompt to pay for it yet.)
World Clock (is now a trial version. Keep original don't update)
Advanced Task Manager (Is now gone from the market. You have to pay for the new version.)
Quickoffice (Also gone from the market.)

As soon as someone upgrades an app that adds an expiration date, they should mention it here.
Some of us don't mind having an older version for free
Depending on the app though. Some i'd pay for.

If you have and use the app, it's obviously worth paying for.
The question is, how much is it worth If it's something valuable enough to keep on your phone, I'd think 99 cents is more than fair.
ParkMark & Geodroid
When I was browsing in the Market 12 hours ago I saw 'ParkMark Demo' instead of 'ParkMark'. I read the description and there was told about trail expires on march, 1st. When I read the comments the users were disgusted about paying for such an app.
Now I looked at ParkMark again and its name was switched back to 'ParkMark' and there isn't mentioned anything about "trial" in the description.
So it could be they reconisdered and kept ParkMark free or they hided every information about trial so everybody makes the (hidden trial-) update.
EDIT:
Found this at the developer homepage:
ParkMark (and all applications for the G1) is currently free. The update will be a low cost app once the market gets going and a demo version will be available.

Thats what I was worried about with the apps.
So if we have apps that are currently free&they add a fee to them in the future wed be charged for them even though when we downloaded them ,they were free?
World Clock
World Clock by Thinlet is now a trial.
It was free w/ over 10k downloads but then he/she/they had an update w/o notice of what's changed & that's when people started noticing it was now trial. Weak.
I accidently updated parkmark, indeed it's name on the phone is now ParkMark Demo...kind of deceptive imo :/
It's Park Mark free for me...
Does anyone have the old APK file?
cmavr8, yup, another updated version! seems the maker of parkmark watches out little forum They changed the app description to "This version free forever" "full paid version coming April 1st". So i think we're good for now.
What is the method of extracting the APK file from my phone for an application that i want to save?
As a user, I definitely understand the desire to have all apps be free. But I also know that in order for apps to continue to be developed and improved, there needs to be some sort of motivation to do so. A couple dollars or less is certainly reasonable for good quality apps. As a developer, I can tell you that it takes a lot of time and energy to produce a quality app and there comes a time when it is simply not worth it without some sort of compensation. Remember, developers have lives, families, etc... they don't exist to simply serve the user. That being said, I think that all apps that are already available for free (and are not demo versions) should remain free, and I think most will. At least it's not the Apple App Store, I mean come on all those folks paying for fart machines and other inane apps. I think it's good the Android Market has had some time to get some of those types of apps out of the way for free.
Feel free to download my app, as I will not be charging for it unless I do some major overhaul of new features, which would require me to charge. I don't see that happening, however. Not that I think there is a huge market for my app as it is a specialized tool for a certain industry...
I would hope that a 'new' version is created for the pay version, instead of forcing a paid upgrade. That seems like the solution that would encourage payment for additional "new and improved" features.
Of course. Besides, the terms of the Market require that to be the case.
Hey does anyone have the maverick.apk? I accidentally deleted it from my sd & its not in the market anymore. I looked in stats sig but I couldn't find it there either.

Why would you run an app like this? All you're doing is taking away money from developers who make apps that you use. They worked hard on the code, why should you get it for free?
Its all about data man, not getting anything for free. Some apps dont have the option to pay for a key to do so. Plus who actually clicks on the adds anyways, thats the only way to benefit from having them there. Im all about supporting the work of great devs, but i dont like my phone to connect to the web when its totaly unnessescary. Plus its not just for apps, works in the web browser too helping pages with garbage load faster

I mostly use it for web browsing so it doesn't load ads. I don't use many ad-supported apps. Angry Birds is one of the only ones, and it doesn't have a paid version. If I like an app I will buy or donate.
Anyway, I'm new to the Evo (not to Android), and read that the Evo can't have files written to /system unless in bootloader. Is this true??

Because I don't want ads on my phone. Everywhere I go, everywhere I look there are ads. I pay for cable TV yet I have to watch commercials. There are ads ALL over the internet. My inbox is littered with spam from advertisers selling garbage products that I have no interest in. The last place I want to see ads is on my cell phone. It's not about taking money away from the devs. I have spent over $300 on games and apps from the market, I have no problem at all tossing the devs money for their hard earned work if they give us that option. If they don't, that's not my problem. Besides, it's not like I've ever clicked on a single ad so keeping them on my phone isn't going to give them any more money than if I block them.

Here is the hosts file AdFree uses. I haven't updated database in a couple months, but it works great for me. I would rather not run an app to block sites therefore I just use the hosts file. Simply extract hosts.zip as it IS NOT FLASHABLE, remove old hosts file in /system/etc and push new hosts file to same place. No app needed!

Being these phones are Linux based most "virus" that are downloaded and installed (with user permission i remind you) are mal-ware.
There is no real reason to need one.
Just make sure you know where the apps are coming from and you shouldn't have a problem.

As I stated in AC/AF forum. You have to understand the biggest threat *nix based system faces comes from the user itself who are danger to the system as they don't understand it. Now by default how the permission base structure was setup was designed to limit the access from rouge script or execute shell which was place remotely. For it to happen it didn't magically came on the local host it was done with the permission of the user unknowingly as they basically gave the rights away. This is why we say to new users not to run under usr root as even sufficient @wheel access they can do damage.
So when you download app specially you know who and you know where becareful make sure you read the permission that you grant the apps as it can connect, update, upload contents. Far as this thread goes its useless as virus scanner just waste resource which can be overcome with little caution or avoided totally with common sense.
You dont really have to worry about antivirus with android aslong as you dont let everything under the sun have its way with superuser. Theres not much that can go wrong past wipeing your contacts or something but thats a quick refresh on sync and there back. Really all u need is a good device finder something that can help you recover a stolen device or what ever. I use Mobile Defence and its almost out of beta so should be available on the market soon.

Do you even know what your talking about? Wiping contacts? Where did you get that from? That's least of the worst fear far as you know it can dail in some 900 number and charge you whatever money they want. They can even data mine and steal other info but antivirus wont help you only way you can be safe is follow common sense and not giving permission to things that's suspicious and asking for access to things it has no need for access to.

I beg to differ. Just using one news source .. and articles from the last 30 days, I found the following Andriod malware news stories:
Infected Androids Run Up Big Texting Bills
Mobile Spyware Conferences Into Your Calls
New Android Malware Robs Bandwidth For Fake Searches
Security Warning Over Web-Based Android Market
Android isn't Windows, but it is susceptible to attack. It is a growing market (300,000+ phones activated daily), filled with non-technical, clueless users, as well.
Here's one more, from another news source, from yesterday. Fifty apps. Five-Zero. In Android Market:
Google Removes More Malware from Android Market
The only alternative app market I've ever seen is appbrain, and that re-routes you to the standard market. Why would you use something other than the android market? Outside of pirated apps, it seems pretty pointless. Am I missing something?
Well thats the beauty of open community even if anything does show up it is quickly identified and users blow the whistle on it. Other than that you need walgarden based market like Apple's App Store which takes time and forever to post as this is fine as is. This is why user recommendation is important and mostly everyone use similar.
Far as virus thing goes its pure void I mean if it was identified then the source wouldn't be available in first place. You DON'T need anything as thats what they want you to think as they pray on your fear to buy these BS app which you don't even need with little caution you can be safe.

So why don't you prove me wrong here? are you actually trying to debate this? Last time I checked I was the one behind *nix system for past 12+ years. Thats like driving your car with your eyes closed and when you get in accident you blame the car, no you only have yourself to blame. As this same concept apply for system. Fine lets drop this subject ill let you prove your own point so did you ever find the docs about your "VICC 4G Sim Card"? How did that go for ya? how do I get one? will you sell me one for $9.99? lol
So since I don't need antivirus, and mal-ware is all I am looking for, what then is the best methods for telling if an App is laced with mal-ware? I am very careful in what I grant SU access and look at the permission before I install. I usually install from the app market. Any other helpful hints?
Well when you need something as the community for recommendations on which app would be appropriate for your need I mean if you Google it you will find answer as I'm sure someone asked, this way based on top pick what everyone use you can get.
Second is be cautious and what I mean by that is look for abnormalities like the app is asking for permission which wouldn't have news for to function.
Third is the most important part to where you get it ask you can reduce the risk by downloading from app market and not downloading from 3rd party of by pirated *.apk's as you wont know where it came from or what it contained.
If you follow these simple methods you can reduce the risk factor by large margin, now I am no fool I know you still can get it even after this but this way it wont be long before someone blow the whistle on it and app gets pulled from the market. This is just common sense you should follow.

[Q] wrong location

Hello. This is the first time im dealing with such problem in Android and thats why i am in panic mode on.
While i was on vacation still in Greece my location started behaving strange. I was chatting on fb when a girl told me that underneath my message it said location : Beijing, China. I didnt pay attention as i thought it might be a malfunction in the location system. From that day and for 15 days my telephone insisted that i was on Thailand so i managed to check my location history on Google. And that was a shock actually. I was supposed to be in greece, Istanbul and Thailand EVERY DAY. i searched the history to find when this started and it was the day i downloaded a file from Piratebay.se . I immediately wet my pants and i had my phone restored in its factory statem i kept it that way without even installing apps for 2 days. The location history was finally accurate when i decided to reinstall my apps from Google Play store. 2 days have past and today someone told me that i am again showing my location in Thailand (on fb chat). So Since i reinstalled the apps this thing keeps happening. My phone is the International version bought from an official store brand new last year and it hasnt been rooted or flashed. Sorry for the long post but i feel horrified. Thanks in advance.
Mine always thinks I'm in place I'm not. Today I am aparently somewhere in Siberia. (I've not yet decided if that is an improvement from the arse end of Serbia or not.)
If you suspect it's an app, do another reset. Then MANUALLY reinstall all your apps one by one over time (or in batches of a few.) You should be able to find the culprit that way.

If you suspect it's an app, do another reset. Then MANUALLY reinstall all your apps one by one over time (or in batches of a few.) You should be able to find the culprit that way.

Bank stuff and piratebay should be kept a long way from each other. Just one bad file from any filesharing site is all it takes. If you're afraid of viruses, piratebay ain't gonna cure you.
I was in France for 3 weeks a couple of years back, and throughout my trip my location was invariably Guadalajara, Mexico, a place I was last in in 1986. Even Google couldn't have known that Or could they...

No.
I've been a pirate all my life. I download about 2TB a month from Usenet and Piratebay.
Have had a total of 4 virusses, and none of those came from those sources. Two were from websites that were infected (avg caught them) and two were from infected USB pendrives. (avg caught those too, bit I did need to do some manual cleanin.) Never had any on my Android devices.
(it was even legal here until mid2014, and they still don't enforce it.)
But I always pay attention to what I'm downloading; no books or music as executable files, no films of 30MB, etc. Those are all fake and usually contain malware.
There are no virusses for Android. Android is linux-based. Just like iOS. The only thing there is is malware.
And the chance of getting Android-based malware out of a torrentfile is incredibly small. Nonexistent if you know what you're doing.
If there is a virus in it, it's usually in a .exe or .dll, both of which are unreadable by Android. A windows-based virus, malware or spyware can't do anything to your Android device. (you can still infect your pc if you manually transfer the file to it)
The only time you run a risk is when you install a cracked .apk from an unreliable cracker or site. (yes, there are reliable ones.) if you haven't done that, there's very little chance it came from the torrent.
More likely it's some other app from the appstore.
There are more malware infected and dangerous apps on Google Play than there are on The PirateBay.
You can always have MalwareBytes and AVG or AVAST scan your phone. They're free on the Play Store and the best in terms of dealing with malware.
Now, I know this discussion is starting to approach the edge of the site's rules on warez. (If not already leaning across) But I think it's still staying on the side of troubleshooting, as he's not asking for help downloading, and we're not telling others how to.
Well, I've decided I prefer Siberia over Serbia (my last visit wasn't exactly a holiday...) so yea, sort of cool it is Bit nippy though.
