So far i tested Raging Thunder 2 and Dungeon Hunter.
Both are running a little choppy on the EVO while they are smooth as butter on the N1. Not horribly laggy but the you can clearly see the difference.
I tried to disable Sense and any live wallpaper, but still the results are the same.
I hope this is a software issue which is going to be fixed prior to release.
ewwwww, I really hope your right.
You hope i am right or wrong? lol.
Less complex games are running just fine on both devices. It is the more graphically complex games that are slightly choppy on the EVO.
does the Nexus have 2.2?
this is to be semi expected since the EVO has senseUI.
Check out this video. At the start you can see the apps list scrolling is a bit choppy on the EVO, then in Linpack the score is only about 5.8. My HTC Incredible gets a score of 6.8 normally.
Finally in the 3d benchmark it is the slowest. Even lower than a Motorola Droid! What is going on here, is something making the EVO slower than equal spec'd phones?(N1, Incredible)
the Nexus has 2.2, so it's bound to be faster. the Droid has stock 2.1, so it's not working as hard to run senseUI.
looks about right to me.

wondering why the incredible is scoring higher though (Post above yours)
unless its just a problem with the prelaunch software on it?
Honestly, if the evo is going to not perform better then the droid that could very well kill it for me, if i'm going to upgrade i'm going to upgrade to the best, not the second best.
I'm really hoping these devices tested are running a version of Eclair that hasn't been optimized yet. I mean, there's absolutely no way HTC could downgrade their flagship device compared to the Nexus One and Droid. I'll be ridiculously disappointed if these speed tests are accurate representations of the final Evo release.
You're splitting hairs regarding 3D performance. JIT this the main benchmark you should care about now. Next on Google's plate is optimizing 3D performance.

Jesus christ, all of you guys are whiny babies, go cry about how there is a 1 FPS DIFFERENCE somewhere else. I'm fairly certain this is a god damn software issue that can be fixed, especially with 2.2. I find it so silly to see people say things like this are going to kill getting the evo for them, like i said, go cry about how everything in this phone is TOP OF THE LINE except 1 feature, you can't have a god damn perfect phone whiny babies.
And by the way, i kept myself from using another b word instead of babies to keep myself from getting banned .

I agree. I guess I'm not as big of a "phone geek" as others appear to be. I'm gonna be using my Evo for (of course) making/receiving calls, internet, some music, and social networking. I have an iPod touch and Nintendo DSi for gaming. I don't need to be wasting what little battery power I have on senseless games. I can't believe something that minute would stop someone from getting a phone. If you want a gaming system invest in a PSP or Nintendo DS.
WOW ok did you forget to take your medication today? I didn't read that anyone was crying they were merely stating what they have seen. Don't be such a fan boy.

Actually, yes, i did, but my hangover medication is beside the point. If you weren't so obtuse, you would know that crying is a way to say complaining, especially over something so silly like this. Lastly, fanboy? Really? I respect all phones, although i love android phones, i'm very fair to others. I love the iphone and always will(a bit bored of the OS, still love it though), really love webos and the pre(though i suck at using it), and i personally love the nexus one. I am far from a fanboy, I just realize that the EVO is easily the best phone on the market right now, and to say it isn't would be ignorant, and to not buy it because it scored slightly, SLIGHTLY lower on a test, which is very likely a software problem, is something a crybaby complains about.
agreed with above. Crying in a thread is not going to help anything. Instead try and figure out WHY it is 1fps lower.
I find it so funny the flip-floppers based on a few small reports. Let's see the Incredible needs to have its optical mouse calibrated, it's Battery Meter updated so that it won't require the charge, turn off, turn on, charge again to gain its 100% actual charge, the intermittent hit the power on button to wake and it doesn't wake right away issue. It's not a perfect phone! OH MY!
With the EVO you are getting every bit the phone the incredible is and then some. 4G(not applicable to all), 30% increased screen size, Brilliant TFT screen, HTC Exchange enhancements(some of these features were stripped in the Incredible), ROOTED already, You Tube HD, Front facing camera. There are a few more I am sure.
If you don't like the way the phone feels in your hands then its not inferior its just not for you. If you think that the 3D features are not up to your standards than the phone is not for you if you can't wait for updates and improvements which are surely to arrive sooner than later. I don't care for 3D so the phone will be exactly what I want. I have the Incredible as well and will keep both.
If there was just one phone that would cater to everyone then that company will never need to make another phone again.
Holding back for a phone based on a few reports and not having tried it out is kinda silly don't cha think?
Wait until it arrives, lay out your cash and take a test drive.
Big deal..

Another thing I like to keep in mind is potential...our rooted optimized Heros are running Neocore at some 33 fps (blows the sox off all three devices in the above video). Imagine what'll happen when the devs getta hold of a device w/ twice the computing power!!
There's speculation that the demonstrated 2.1 is a preliminary build so that may speak a lot as to why there seems to be a performance issue. I personally don't care what my phone runs like when I first get it, cuz I know a stock ROM will rarely perform as well as a custom cooked ROM.

My N1 was running those games fine on 2.1.
It is not a matter of crying about 1fps....
the games literally stutter when you play them, it is not as if they are just slower.
like there is some bottleneck somewhere in the software (maybe drivers) that is preventing the phone from reaching better performance.
I tried to disable Sense UI and the live wallpaper but so no improvement.
I also don't think this is related to JIT, as it seems like a GPU issue.
Anyone knows if there is a command i can run on the phone that will show me what the CPU clocks at?

So I just got back from the Verizon store about 10 minutes ago and I thought that I would write my impressions. Keep in mind this is just my opinion and I figured it might help some out that have not had the chance to try the Incredible or may be on the fence with it or the Nexus One (yes, I know that the N1 is no longer coming to Verizon =( but for some a provider means nothing)
Some up front information. I am a long time iPhone user (owned all three) and switched to the ATT band Nexus One about a month ago. I personally, love Android and I am very happy with the switch. I have the newest build of Cyanogen Mod (2.6.33.2). I didn't really do any up front tests (i.e, speedtest, browser, or acid etc) , and this review is more to do with my impressions I did however run the two phones side by side and spent over an hour with it.
Ok, so let's get to it. The first thing is aesthetics and to be honest I thought the Incredible looked nice, and also felt pretty good in hand. It seems to be built good and it seems to have the exact same "rubbery" feeling that the battery cover of the N1 has, but it is on the entire back of the phone. The back cover didn't bother me to much at all and I felt that it added to the whole "droid" feel that Verizon and it's partners are trying to pull off. There are a couple things that would worry me if I was an Incredible owner and that is the material they used when making the phone. I couldn't get over the fact that the phone felt a little cheap, but I still get the feeling that it would last if dropped. I don't really get that feeling with my Nexus One. I feel the build of the Nexus One is a little better (i.e, aluminum), but I have always felt that the phone would not with stand the slightest bit of fall from even 3-5 feet (I have never dropped mine so I really have no experience, again this is only my opinion based on how the phones feel).
The Incredible is fast, really fast. I had the same feeling when I used my Nexus One for the first time and as far as I can see there really is not a huge difference in speed between the two phones. But, there is a giant difference in "touch" the Incredible eats my Nexus One's lunch when it comes to overall touch and snappiness. The new sensor really adds to the whole Android experience and of all the Android phones I have tried none so far even come close to the touch screen on the Incredible. My Nexus One was great and the iPhone's I had was even better, but finally we have an Android phone (in my opinion) that not only competes with the iPhone on touchscreen and multitouch technology, but the Incredible one ups it. It really made the whole experience a lot more enjoyable on the phone. Everything, seems to work like Android was designed to work.
The next big thing I noticed and tested was the N1 trackball vs the Incredible's optical sensor. The sensor was nice and I have mixed feelings between the two. I mean everyone knows that an optical sensor looks better and should last a hell of a lot longer than a trackball and I have always felt that the trackball on the N1 looked way out of place. I have gotten really used to the trackball and I use it quite a bit and it is a lot easier to use than the optical sensor. You won't see a big difference at all if you are just flipping between screens or jumping to a text needed in the browser, but you will when choosing apps (but, really who does that anyways when you have touch) Like I said I have mixed feelings I love the look of the optical sensor, but I really feel the trackball is a little more responsive. It took me a while to get used to the trackball so I am sure if I owned the phone I would get a little more used to it and my opinion would change. I must say that I don't use the trackball often so if I had the choice I am sure I would choose the optical sensor.
Some of the other things I noticed that didn't make a huge impression was Sense vs Vanilla Android. I have used sense off and on with both my N1 (Modaco ROM), and my fiance's Droid Eris. I don't have much of an opinion, but I would give just a slight edge to Vanilla Android just because of the update situation however, if Google really adjusts Android like they are rumored to do and the update situation is non existent my opinion would change and I would like Sense. I guess we will see, but as far as some saying that having Sense will bog down Android I must say that I didn't experience that at all. They both ran just as smooth and will the Incredible's wonderful touch sensor I would give a slight favor to the Incredible with sense over the N1.
I spent about ten minutes with the camera/video camera on both phones and although I couldn't tell a huge difference in the pictures and videos (I know the Incredible sports a 8 mp and the N1 5mp), but I was also not able to upload any pictures to a computer to blow them up. I did send them to my email and I will post later if I notice a big jump or not. I still would give the Incredible the advantage just because why wouldn't I? 8mp is always going to beat 5mp and dual flash is nice.
Next one of my biggest gripes about the N1 and that is the touch sensor buttons on the bottom of the phone. The N1 like many probably know work and work well, but you have to touch the top two thirds of the label to get them to respond at all and I did find for the first little bit of owning the phone I often touched the home screen button when typing a text or email. With the Incredible these work perfectly. Not only do you not have to aim your finger, but they also worked every time I attempted to use them. They are in a different order than the N1 so that took me a minute to get used to, but no biggie. This is the way HTC and Google should of made the N1 work and personally I think they got it right with the Incredible.
I don't have a problem with my N1 when it comes to the 3G dropping issue and that could be that I got the ATT one or maybe I just got lucky. I did try to cover the bottom of the Incredible and it didn't seem to dip at all. Also, there was a Moto Droid right next to the Incredible and they seemed to get the same service so that should be a relief for many.
I wish that I would of had a couple days with this phone so that I could test many other aspects with it like the battery, further tests on 3G and wifi, the overall build, and even the speed. Really the Incredible is a nice phone and in a lot of ways I feel that it lives up to the hype. In my opinion I found my self wishing that I had the screen touch sensor in my N1 it really makes a giant difference even tho the N1 isn't all that bad. I could really do without the extra mega pixels in the camera and to my knowledge they both record at the same levels (I may be wrong with this and if I am then I am sorry). I do wish that the touch sensors on the bottom of the N1 worked as well as the Incredible, but I can live without it. Like I said sense vs Vanilla until I hear differently I would rather get the quicker updates, but if Google addresses this issue I would love to Sense on my N1 (Yes, I know I can with Modaco Sense ROM). The trackball is something that doesn't make a huge difference, but I do worry about how well it will hold up after months of usage.
My final feelings are that although the Incredible is the better phone it is not worth switching over to Verizon for it (although yes I do believe that Verizon is the better provider, but I have a family plan and a contract and that is what I am speaking of). The Incredible looks and feels nice, but I must say I like the overall look and feel of the N1 a little more. Like I said, I couldn't get over the fact that the Incredible felt a little fragile because of the plastic material the phone is made of, but then again the N1's build doesn't feel all that more solid of a phone. The N1 screen looked to me to be a little wider (I could be wrong) and although it sounds wierd it did make a difference, at least to me it did. It will be interesting to see when the Incredible will get the desk dock and car dock because these are big selling points to me with my N1. The deal breaker is the touch screen and how it works. This is the biggest selling point of this phone and that makes me want it, but there is one big thing with my N1 that I really enjoy and that is the wonderful developers behind the N1. I love how easy Google made to root this phone and I really think that a lot of developers make our phones all the more fun to use. Until, I can see the Incredible get these abilities (I am sure they will with great people like Paul the other day rooting the Desire) I would have to go with my N1.
I hope this was helpful to some and that people don't think I was to harsh to either side. I tried my hardest to not come off like a "fanboi" and tried to be as unbiased as possible. I really went in today looking to see if this phone lived up to its hype and I believe it did. I can't see many flaws with owning this phone and I welcome all of our new Android brothers and sisters to the party. Let me know how you all think and thanks for reading I know it's long as hell. Again, A huge thank you to all you developers that pour your hard work into making all of our lives easier. You really make our phones and the Android world all the much better than the competition. Keep up the good work, we love you guys!
Very nice review! For some reason though, even if I could get an Incredible.. I don't think I would o_0 I really don't know why, but.. even though it has better specs (well, not that many matter) I just don't even think I actually "want" it. Is that weird?
They're both great phones, and really are just going to make Android better. Wait, you said the Nexus's screen was wider? Pictures really don't show that.. I thought the Incredible had a wider screen. Weirdness..
Fair enough. I'd say it's just a case of the Incredible coming out later, hence with better hardware. Newer stuff almost always have better components. That's just the way gadgets are. The thing that irks me are people saying that the "old" stuff SUCKS now because there's "new" stuff now. These are the idiots that should be shot.
I too considered the Incredible, but for some reason I felt pangs of loss when I considered not having my Nexy anymore.
Sent from my Nexus One using the XDA mobile application powered by Tapatalk
Wow, great comparison. I read every word. I can't wait to test out the Incredible myself this weekend!
It seems like it's a much better phone in almost every way (touchscreen, soft buttons, camera).
The only downside is what will happen with 2.2. This has yet to be proven, so it can't be counted as a negative -- yet. Time will tell. Until then, I'm definitely envious since in my eyes it is definitely the better phone. Although I think the N1 is definitely sexier
My mom just got this phone today, and I got to say, Sense UI on that phone is a lot faster than Sense UI on the Nexus.

That's cause its not made to be on the Nexus, and Paul doesn't have the Desire kernel source to make it a complete build. I don't even know how much of a speed increase that would cause regardless.. I don't like when people say this (what you said) because the Nexus was never made to run Sense UI, and therefore doesn't have the correct optimization, the stock 2.1 Google experience is the Nexus's child.. not Sense. Im assuming you knew this.. though. Oh and edit, everything I said could possibly be wrong. I am not a ROM baker, or developer.
I wish the things that made the Incredible better interested me, I dont take many pictures.. my touchscreen doesn't irritate me.. and the soft buttons do their job well. Another good score for Android though, with next being the Evo - and those new phones Dell are working on.

I agree to the fullest! I saw some kids on Engadget saying that the Incredivble is faster in every aspect than the N1 and that is not even close to the fact. It is a great phone and yes Verizon and HTC have fixed some of the N1's flaws but all in all this phone is a plastic Desire (that is not a bad thing at all and to each his own) I just wanted to let people know the impressions I got from the phone. To be honest I hope this phone is even more popular than the Moto Droid and then a bunch of people will get it and get more developers interested in Android. I hope it is a huge mainstream success. I love the idea that I have never seen a N1 rather than mine. They can have all that. I love how easy it is to root the N1 and all the talented developers behind it.

I agree the Nexus is a lot sexier. I held them up by each other and both look like great designs. The Incredible has nice specs but most are just small upgrades the Incredible's touch screen is the big difference, but so is the N1 being Google's baby and we will get the upgrades a lot faster. That to me is a bigger selling point. If that changes then I might change my mind. The internal memory, better camera, and better buttons just don't warrant a provider jump in my eyes.

You seem to have the same impression as me. I think that stock Android runs just as good on the Nexus One as Sense does on the Incredible. It comes down to overall what people prefer and for me I prefer Vanilla. None of us will be on top of the Android game for long. Every couple of months a better phone is coming out. It happened to the Moto Droid, now the Nexus One, and soon the Incredible with the EVO 4G. Overall, as Android grows we will all reap the benefits. I really think that the specs in the N1 will be relevant for quite awhile and we wont see many phones that completely stomp it. At least not for another year or so. I am happy with my purchase (especially getting rid of that damn iPhone 3Gs)

Good review man. I also agree that I'd be more interested in the Evo than the Incredible. Partly because of the bigger screen, partly due to the 4G (though my current provider's, T-mobile, HSPA+ might be faster), and partly because I can't stomach paying $40 more a month over Sprint or T-mo.
Do we know yet if the Evo 4G will have the Maxtouch touchscreen?

I've heard this over and over again and I have to agree - The Droid incredible has a look that pales in comparison to the N1.
Having a great phone that also looks amazing is a huge draw to the reason we get new technology (just ask apple and the people who actually bought a $1700 MacBook air). If looks weren't important for our hardware then we would all be driving economy cars with better MPG specs and having Droid incredibles, instead though we have nice looking cars and a near perfect Nexus 1 that looks amazing.

I don't know if we know for sure if it will or not, but if I was a betting man (and i def am) I would say that HTC and Sprint would be stupid not to. I also believe that I read somewhere that all HTC phones will now have that sensor in it. I can't prove that as I am going to work now, but I will look for the source while I am at work and try to post it (don't you love smart phones). I know people laugh at the term "superphone" but when you compare these phones to the iPhone or Blackberriers these phones are def more of a "superphone" than a smartphone. Apple is going to have their hands full this year and it will be very interesting to see how it plays out. I for one don't care what Apple does in June I would be stupid to jump off the Android band wagon we just have way to much going on.

IMO even the EVO is only worth upgrading to if you need 720p recording or would value HDMI out. Personally, I would love to have HDMI (don't care for the HD recording all that much) but it still wouldn't justify ditching my N1. I'm not going to upgrade until the N1 ceases to run newer Android software effectively or significant processing upgrades are made (ie. Dual Core). Who knows I may change my mind but that's how I feel right now.

I'm with you. Most picky gadget dweebs tend to upgrade for the sake of having the latest and greatest even though it's only marginally better than the last "toy" they had. I upgrade my phone like I upgrade my PCs: it's only worth upgrading if the new stuff is at least 10 times more powerful than the last one. Which in most cases can take a few years of waiting. AND it's gotta cover what I "need". Most stuff that I "want" should be an included bonus, which the N1 covers quite well (A2DP, wifi tethering).

Or you value a bigger screen.
Or 4G.
Or Sprint.
Or like the style/looks better.
And so on
The touch buttons on the Incredible seem to be actually on the button, unlike the Nexus. And the camera is amazing!

For PC world to rank this phone as #1 they are smoking something over there.
While it is a GREAT phone. If this is the ABSOLUTE TOP PHONE that HUMAN BEINGS can produce right now, we are a sad sad world.
What about the droid X that not only scores higher, but gets better 3g speeds and doesn't have a gps lock problem out of the box?

I'm not really complaining - I'm just pointing out that pc world has rated a phone #1 when it has glaring issues and that if this is really the best phone in the country. Well.........wow.

Have you used a droid x after the 2.2 update? The damn application menu scrolls at something close to 15 fps. I love the build quality of the hardware but damn moto blur sucks. (i'm not a huge fan of touchwiz either, but at least it's not running at a wholly unacceptable framerate.... a little bit of disclosure, i'm an animator so crappy frame rate REALLY bothers me.)

Yup. I wouldn't touch a Droid X. Thing is choppy as hell. Besides, our GPU blows it out of the water.
Even though I love my Epic, the subpar battery life makes me disagree about it being rated # 1. It's really close I think but I'm not 100% there yet.
Let's see what 2.2 brings and then we can assess it better then. I love this phone much though. :-*

What is hard to believe about Epic being #1? If you think all phones aside from the Epic are perfect out of box you are kidding..in perspective the issues that the Epic came out with weren't so bad in comparison to many other devices....
Anyways..sprint made a bunch of funny commercials based on getting the #1 from pc-world:

Oh and I'm fine...finally happy I got MobileAP working and everything..wish it would transfer more of the 4g speeds but I guess its still faster then 3g a bit :/...
And I suggest watching the Epic Hero one..its the best lol
Listen guys, I don't mean to just sit here and bash my phone. The truth is I want to love it!
Today was a better day for me and my epic. The gps did a good job out on the boat and with the upload fixed I'm doing better.
IMHO a phone that is rated #1 should have NO ISSUES at all. While I realize that's never going to happen. It's a sad statement on our technology that something with multiple problems on launch day is rated #1

The Nexus One wasn't even meant to be a consumer phone..that said, its not like Nexus One is flawless out of the bag. and in their ratings my guess they went off stock on when it came out initially aka 2.1.
That said Nexus One still got #6 which is not too bad considering...

PC World must be on Crack!
Yes the phone has top notch specs/feature, but it doesn't seem to do anything well ... Other then the pix and vids it takes.
I'm not saying PC World is on crack because I feel it's a bad phone. I just don't think it should be ranked #1 because of all the problems everyone's been seeing.
The biggest issue is that GPS is broken, even though Sprint/Samsung stated it was fixed just before launch. The compass doesn't work either. And until just the other day, the upload was capped.
I also don't think they (Sprint/Samsung) will ever get the GPS "Fixed" because I feel it's a hardware or design issue. I say this because the GPS problem is on all the Galaxy S phones, so Samsung has had plenty of time to get it fixed, if software could fix it. I hope I am proven wrong on this....
I also don't know if it was done on Sprint's request, but there's no video out on the 3.5mm jack and no FM radio, even though the hardware is supposedly there. What happened? It makes no sense to not have the video out, when all the other Galaxy S phones do.
I'm not saying this phone isn't a good phone. I just think it should be ranked #1, with the problems it has.

I feel the same way, you just have a more eloquent of saying it.
I searched through the forums quite a bit and even good but have yet to find anything specific. I'm not sure which phone to get since I can not find a rooted comparison.
Please read about my HTC Hero and my original thoughts here:
jpklink.blogspot.com
Main Points:
Weight and size are not an issue: Glass screen is a +
Price is not an issue.
Standard Mini USB charging is a +
Battery life is not so important.
Texting Speed is 100% most important item - my hero can not keep up with my fingers and it is beyond frustrating.
I know this is the Epic forum so I can't say I don't expect you to be bias, but it would be nice to hear anything at all. Just wanted to hear how the phones compare as BOTH rooted devices with all speed benefits.
As of now the epic has an issue where it will miss keys on the physical keyboard every so often. Txlexting speed is also very important to me (I have an epic) and I have been dissappinted with the physical keyboard to say the least. That being said, the evo does not even have a physical keyboard and you could use any keyboard from the evo on the epic. The app "Smart keyboard" is the best of all that I have tried. The screen on the epic is also substantially better than the evo. The evo gets updates before the epic because it is an htc phone so that is always something to consider. Good luck.

If you fancy yourself with modding then an Evo is a clear cut winner. There are much more Roms, Mods, and source codes are always released first for HTC phones. Samsung has a history of not really supporting their devices. Epic is no exception. And if you look at the news today in the Android world, signs point to Samsung focusing on supporting Windows 7 phones in 2011 while Android will slowly move to the back seat. http: //phandroid.com/2010/11/22/samsung-focusing-more-on-windows-7-in-2011-but-will-it-matter/

Yeah you can tell how tarded they are by them having the hottest phone on the planet and neglecting it.
MLHickey:
Actually, I completely forgot to mention, I don't know that I would use the keyboard much anyway. I guess if it was there, I may start to use it, but I like the touch screen keyboard, I'm quite fast with them. In fact I still use T9 a LOT, especially while I'm driving. So as far as the keyboard goes, not a huge pro/con for me. When I mention texting speeds, I just want the phone to be able to keep up with me. My experience with the HTC hero is bad in the sense that I'll be waiting every few words for the phone to catch up so I can check for errors before continuing to type.
imwillzillla:
Those are some really good points! So if I root the Evo with a custom rom, the speeds will be comparable to a rooted epic? And how come HTC stuff comes out first/sooner? Just because the phone has been out longer?
Windows 7... ew. Those are definitely some good points. Do HTC updates and that matter much if I'm installing a custom ROM?
Thanks guys.
Note: I heard the Evo now comes stocked with something that prevents it from being rooted and still today they've yet to break it. Any truth to this?

Great news. I've been leaning towards the evo... looks like it's decided. Thanks again MLHickey.
Last note is, should I wait for early 2011 in case HTC releases something crazy. I mean, I can live on my HTC hero a few more months if I need to.
Just thought as an epic owner Im obligated to reply. The choice is a hard one, but the epic is faster, a better screen (even if slightly smaller) and since its basically stock android doesnt need roms like cynagen to be super fast and its only slightly thicker then the evo. You also get better battery life on the epic.
As for the keyboard, its really not that bad, and a keyboard is better then nothing at times when touch typing just isnt working out as planned.
I had the same hard decesion and luckily when I was visiting home a few weeks ago I got to play with my parents evo. Don't let the benchmarks fool you, the epic is much faster, plus that screen, you get size shock from the evo, but color and contrast shock from the epic. Plus you can install htcs awesome on screen keyboard on the epic. Its the best of all worlds in my book. The evo will have faster updates though, but really.. updates are almost superficial because by time android 2.2 is unsupported should they stop there you will likely be getting a new phone. Gps might or might not work better on the evo, some epics are fine, others aren't.
Just my 2 cents.

But what about Epic's ugly azz cool color temperature?! Whites look grey on it, screen has blue tint... sorry, photographer coming out in me, but Evo's colors are much more accurate.

I'm not tryna sound biased but u gotta be kidding me.. maybe ur gf's usage is much higher.. honestly 4 of my friends have evo's and whenever we're chilling on either of our houses, they fight over the charger.. although my epic is rooted and has custom rom+kernel and their evo doesn't but even b4 i rooted mine i had much better battery life..
The keyboard on this thing is not great, but it beats having none. WPM will not be high with this keyboard, although accuracy is not bad. Still, coming from a Hero, I really like having a keyboard now.
The main gripe is Samsung's poor support, small ROM, and the gps on this thing.
If you text a lot, this should still be your choice as it is faster than virtual keyboards.

Lets be a smarta$$ about it.
Anyways.
No. I have asked about the Evo's battery life and I quite frequently hear it hardly makes it through the day from people who DO own them. I've had mine unplugged with moderate use and plenty of calls since 7am and its at 40% right now at 11PM. Now to be fair.. my Epic is rooted with the battery sucking processes from Sprint/Samsung cut out, the Evo's i've heard about are stock. If both were rooted you'd probably cut similar results.
They both have 1500MAH batteries, they will both be roughly the same if you cut the fat out of each I imagine.
As for the screen, yeah the colors are not as accurate, but you're not going to notice, they have a cooler look to them which bothers the heck out of graphics designers and the like heh heh but really.. it's still stunning in comparison to the evo, but thats just MY opinion.
You really need to go into the Sprint store and play with both as much as you can.... you really can't go wrong with either of them and their pro's and con's split pretty evenly.
1) for the keyboard issue..try disabling Swype and use the hardware kb.
2) Epic even with the custom roms we have is doing fairly well...I mean take all the custom roms on the EVO and the Epic and you'll notice there isn't too much difference...most of the advantages EVO had was gotten from the Nexus One which hopefully we will get from the Nexus S.
3) You can do a bunch with custom roms on the EVO to make it run smoother but It'll never run as smooth as the epic.
4) The colors can't be more accurate on the EVO because its only 64k colors..if anything Droid X has probably the most accurate colors...but since EVO is only 64k colors it won't be accurate...the Super AMOLED tends to be mroe blue because the blue dies out the fastest...over time it balances itself out...on my device though if I set it to 100% brightness its white as I lower the brightness it turns grayish..but thats what lowering brightness is suppose to do...
5) Yeah.. texting while driving is bad...
6) Battery life varies by your usage..overall though if you configure it best you can on both devices Epic will win.

i had to read that twice, he wasnt talkin about you only having two cents... he was referring to owning both phones... just kinda seemed like u took that the wrong way...
Personally, I never got to actually play around with an evo but I will say these things about my epic:
The keyboard, though sometimes annoying, is a great bonus to have for those who text/email/im/fb/whatever a lot. And you can bring the htc keyboard over to the epic as well.
The battery life on custom roms/kernels seems to be better when compared to most evo scenarios (I don't have an evo so don't quote me)
The color temps can be fixed using voodoo color.
The phone DEFINITELY responds better to user input than the evo, hands down (probably due to the evo having so much bloat, and also due to the better built cortex processor)
Updates on the evo happen more quickly, this is very true. But our devs have done a great job fixing MOST of our major issues.
This is a big one that people seem to be failing to mention. The new froyo modems seem to FIX gps PERMANENTLY. I've been running wifi on my epic for days without a reboot and gps is on hot start (not using the cold start workaround) and every time I get a full lock within seconds (using gps status).
All in all, I love my epic and the way it runs thanks to our community, but if you want a more reliable manufacturer (and a community that isn't chock full of spoiled brats who's parents bought them the phone), go with the evo.
If you can deal with the slower updates and the forum nonsense, go with the epic.

Lol!
I think more kids end up with an epic over an evo just because of the keyboard. Look son it has a keyboard so you can type fast! "OMG L33T AHH! SWEET!" lol..
I wonder how many kids actually are on these forums when I was 12 I wasn't looking for ways to hack my cell phone... then again when I was 12 I think that Motorola "flip" phone that looked like something outta star trek was the most popular one for being so "portable". lol
uhm no, thats why there are sidekicks.. i doubt u will c a kid with an epic or evo..
If your like me you are having a hell of a time deciding which phone to get/keep. Well I happen to have both and after almost a week with each. Here is my opinion, and why. maybe it will help some of you out.
I am writing this in the nexus forum as to not flame or upset mt4g users, so obviously my choice is to keep the nexus. Hopefully people considering either phone will see this.
I consider myself the average user. Dont care about + or - 200 pts on quadrent (diff between the device) or the quickest update (as long as **** works, I can wait a couple weeks for the updated Maps...) I care more about the look, feel, camera, battery life, and pleasure I get from the device.
Having personal experience with both phone. The only reason I could ever see someone getting the mt4g over the nexus is if you really need more than 16g of space available to you, or you live in seattle (which I do) and you really need that 7.6megs
I'll start with look. I like both phones. but I love the seemless look of the nexus. It look sleek, modern, and feels light WHILE KEEPING a very sturdy feel. If that was a concern of yours... dont let it be. The phone is infact very solid feeling.
Camera: This is where I thought the mt4g would have a slight edge cause of the HD. I was wrong. I took video in my house with both phones at the same time. played them the same time split on my 61" tv and view them fully blown up by themselves on the tv. and to my surprise, for whatever reason the image quality on NS every bit as good. Also I feel the color on the vid and pics was better on the NS. Again. surprised by this...???
internet speed: I have a 4g tower right outside my window that give my mt4g 3.6m. my nexus also gets around 3.6. Again, not a real technical guy. Dont know why they get the same, but there it is. Fact is I mostly use apps. DUH. they rarely require 1m to run lightning fast. (but i'll take the extra 2.6 for the occasional browsing) 4G for me is a moot point and useless unless you do a lot of hotspotting, or just love running speedtest apps all day and brag to your friends. Besides, at some point. your internet speed is gonna be waiting for your processor while browsing and i'm gonna bet its well before 7megs on these phones... I have a 50meg comcast wifi connection at my house. Admittedly, I haven't run tests. But I fail to see any difference between my 50m wifi vs my 3.6m cell tower. hence why I dont bother turning on wifi when at home....
Battery life: this is the most obvious difference. I dont care what anyone says. the mt4g lasts me 3/4 of a day at best. period. If you want to turn off all your widgets, background data, 3g/4g speeds and maybe make it a full 12 hours go ahead and get the mt4g. I know people claim they do, and maybe I got a bad battery. but my mt4g wouldn't do it... the nexus goes all day, and I plug it in at night. Wish it could last 2 days like my last phone, but hey...
finally the screen. the mt4g screen is nice, and supposedly better than most phones, but the NS screen just embarrass it. (whether you have the "good or bad" mt4g screen)(a common problem if you read the mt4g forum)
I was a little long winded, but hey... After having both phones, the choice was clear. except for those few people that need more than a 7.6m connection, and more than 16g of hard drive. the choice for me is now very clear. NS all the way.
Glad you made the right choice. (The big thing for this phone though is it will get updates a lot sooner than everyone else like the mytouch 4g having 2.2 and the nexus s having 2.3.1)
I have a ns an my fiance has a mt4g an i definitely like the ns better but the mt4g is an awesome phone as well
I also find the mytouch real buttons can never be compared to the sexy capacitive buttons of nexus s. but they have the GENIUS button ( )
Try turn on wifi at home, I get up to 17.20mb down. It does't make a big difference while browsing or using apps compared to the 3.0mb from tmobile really.
I have the MT4G and my brother has the Nexus S, i had all intentions of returning my phone and picking up a Nexus S when I first heard about them coming out but honestly I just cant get myself to do it. I love having a dedicated camera button, real buttons, trackpad wake, and the build quality is just so superior. I bought my phone from Costco so have 90 days to return, still have about a month left, but for now I just cant get myself to switch. I do love the screen though, I used to have a Vibrant.
Battery life isnt the best but it does last me from 7am when I unplug it to 10pm when I plug it back in. My gfs mytouch 4g with a different rom has crazy battery life, much better then mine, even when i use the same rom as hers.
I too dont really care about the 4g aspect and would consider myself a typical user
I'm also having a hard time deciding which to keep, love the Nexus S ,but for some reason the MT4g is alot smoother in the browser, especially with really intensive web pages.Makes me wonder if the MT4g browser is hardware accelerated.
I'm with you. I played with a MT4G for a while and decided to go with the Nexus S. I also kept a Nokia N8 for a couple of weeks, a Dell Venue Pro for a few days and owned a N900 for a year. While I miss the multi-tasking & web-browsing of the N900, the N8 and DVP were quickly returned.
cool guys... yeah. some people just like the mt4g better. it was a tough decision. again. I'm not sold on the build quality being better with the mt4g. i think it may "feel" better, with the cold steal from the back plate. But I think they are both built to last. unfortunately I dont have the balls to put them to a drop test
BTW. the genius button is a moot point cause I have a search button that does absolutely everything the genius button does. (text dictation, maps, web, etc.etc)I guess t-mobiles marketing really paid off here (making people think they are getting something other phones and carriers aren't. kudos t-MO)
yeah... I'm not sure about the browser speed. like I said. I'm not that worried about testing or having 1/4 sec better browser times... just isn't an issue for me. But maybe your right and the mt4g is a little faster...
I agree that the mt4g is a great phone. just not as good as the nexus

this is already been discussed, the nexus s browser has a bug that is not taking advantage of the graphics acceleration. an update will fix it like it did for the galaxy s. you just have to wait for it and it will be smooth as butter.

Having used the Mytouch Slide and now the G2 the one big thing I miss about the genius button is the Driving Mode. You can listen to a text, compose a reply and have it read back to you, and send it all without touching the phone.
Voice Actions is close but in the same situation it requires you to read the message, hit a button to reply, read the message to check it, and manually hit send.
It all comes down to the screen for me. The CPUs in all the top-end phones are more than capable at this point, and most of the internal hardware is largely undifferentiated. But the vast majority of my time spent using my phone involves looking at the screen, not the backplate or a camera button or on a TV via HDMI.
I'll take a crappy looking phone with a gorgeous screen over a beautiful phone with a crappy screen any day of the week.
I've had both phones too, while the NS feels nicer i don't see the real point in getting a high end phone right now, Motorola Atrix, the new Samsung 4.5" eats the NS for breakfast any day.
I got the MT4 because it has a faster cpu which makes web browsing smoother and a lot cheaper so i can save moneys for the next wave of dualies.
The NS is still a nice phone if you want google and all that but the new dualies looks very promising and i'd rather have the latest hardware than whatever google can offer, which at this point i believe is not much 2.3 has been a huge disappointed for me.

Check this video after min 5:00 and see how bad the NS is doing at web browsing, since android GUI is not gpu accelerated the cpu is doing all the force. BTW the desire hd has the same cpu found in the mt4. Dual Core is going to make the NS into a 2nd tier android device. $530 plus tax is a lot to pay for a 2nd tier device if you ask me.
NS owners act like they have the best phone in the world, however i have a feeling that a lot of these will pop up in the marketplace very soon.
Pure android experience or not, pretty much any phone can be rooted and delete the bloatware.

While the scores are nice, they don't mean jack, the quadrant of dual cores i have seen are below 2000 and i'd prefer a dual core phone over a ns any day no matter what a silly little number tells. I just don't know why didn't you pick linpack? oh yeah the cortex a8 version in the hummi sucks at it.

When you are trying to make a point use some facts and not some video.
You can start buy here: http://www.reddit.com/r/Android/comments/evref but focus on the only reply that used facts and not opinions: http://www.reddit.com/user/VincentLaguardiaGa

I dont even get what your doing in this forum then? this site has what seems like a hundred phones. I've never been in a forum of a phone i dont own or am thinking of owning. you obviously dont care for the NS. why are you here?
The NS is as fast or faster than any phone out right now. right out of the box, the mt4g might beet in in quadrant by 200. big deal. so the second fastest phone and the only one with NFC is an outdated piece of crap cause in 4 to six months a duel core phone will be coming out?
My NS and any other 1ghz phone is plenty fast for me and most people. (160,000 android devices sell every day) so I guess those people are all idiot as well?
I just dont get the point of you being here? I dont see you calling out people in the mt3g slide for purchasing an inferior phone. its probably still selling better than the NS.
If you want to be a hardware whore. that's your business. Most of use were probably N1 or worse phone owners before our NS purchase. And I'm fine with that upgrade. My phone broke and I didn't want to wait 4+ months to get a new one
And not to do my own flaming on phones that aren't out yet. But i'm sure the switch over to duel core isn't going to be as smooth as I'm sure your hoping. I would be prepaired for some issues on launch devices... (hopefully not. but things rarely go smooth with new tech.)
I don't know why the need to use harsh words in a phone discussion, but that shows your level of maturity, you can't even spell
My girlfriend just got a brand new White EVO (I have my black one since launch date and it's been rooted since it was possible). I never tried playing N.O.V.A. until I accidentally stumbled upon it on her phone...
My impression? I'm actually quite shocked that Sprint included this with their new OTA. It's definitely too much for this phone to handle smoothly. While playable most of the time, it isn't something a company should be advertising when the hardware can barely keep up. I'm also shocked that the EVO can't handle it that well. My friend's Droid X ran it as smooth as could be.
PS - This was ran on an stock, unrooted, barely vanilla EVO. Perhaps a custom ROM and some overclocking fixes this issue?
Runs fine on my evo...
Sent from an EVOlution
yeah.. my evo runs it fun... but..it aint close to stock
stock = bloatware that slows down your phone...
You shouldn't have bothered. You'll only get a bunch of replies from people who have mysteriously perfect EVOs. I have run NOVA on CM6/7, Sense and MIUI, all ran 'playable' but chopped up when things got busy. This will stir **** up, but all you got to do is play NOVA on a iPhone 4 or Galaxy S and compare. Its silky smooth, 60 FPS-ish. EVO feels like 25-30 with drops down to half that when a lot is happening.

evo = crappy gpu haha.
I guess some people are easily satisfied, but if a device is packing some software with it, it should run flawless on my book. Right?!
I just don't understand their reasoning. You don't see Crysis being packaged with entry-level video cards do you?

bingo.
Hence why you see threads where people are like
"its fine for now" or "its decent"
etc..
they easily satisfied with the ****ty gpu.
If you don't like it then why do you have it, imo either stop *****ing or get rid of it

It's not about being easily satisfied, it's about what's available at the time. Technology will forever move forward and sooner or later something will run slow on a device that was the best of it's kind. They're not easily satisfied, some people are NEVER satisfied. I don't see anyone here trying to get a job with HTC or Samsung or any other OEM to develop something out of this world.
