Hi guys,
I'm about to commit to my first smartphone and am probably going to go for the Legend.
Firstly I'm new to all this, so what exactly is rooting? From what I understand, rooting is gaining admin access to your phone (how is this done though - using a security loophole?). The advantage of rooting is that you can do a lot more with your phone now. The disadvantages are that it's a security risk and it voids the warranty. Is all of that correct?
Anyway, the reason I'm asking is that, apart from curiosity, the only thing making me think twice about getting the Legend is the Froyo thread on this page. Reading that I gather that there's a fair chance that HTC may not release Android 2.2 for the Legend, which is disappointing because it's a dead-end for such a new phone.
So assuming the worst, HTC decides to leave out Froyo from the Legend, would I be able to get Froyo on it after rooting it? Would it be advisable? I understand I will lose SenseUI.
Cheers all.
dont worry .
2.2 will come to our loved legend .
Hi,
How sure you are, legend will froyo 2.2 updates?
When do you think this will happen?

Dave

Hey guys and chiefs.
has anyone of you planned to make a Sony-Ericsson Xperia X8 ROM for HTC Hero?
that would be great because Hardware is very similar (only about 10% slower CPU and a bit less RAM) and my girlfriend is using my old hero. I have the X10 and i love timescape and mediascape but the X8 version is much faster and more cute
would be cool if anyone could port the X8 software when its released
Thanx for replies

that would be veeeeeeeery nice

X10 (and X8 even much more) are very not popular devices, so i think nobody will try to port ROMs from that devices.
One of reasons is eg. no support for multitouch... And if we have genuine 2.1, what can be better in port... ?
Rather somebody could try to run X10/X8 apk's on hero... I think it could be possible, but need support from users of that devices...
So if you're owner of X10/X8, publish here apk's of apps that you'd like to see on hero, if that apks will don't work from scratch, maybe one of our best devs (eg. somebody from TeamVillain or Feeyo, or sbd else) will try to modify that apk's...
honestly why would you want sonys rom?
if you have ever used an x10 then you know anything built by sony has been nothing but garbage...

i own an X10 with new R2B firmware and its a great device..... i have also an Nexus one and tried an HTC desire and i would never change to one of these devices for daily use......
and what are you talking about bad selled phone??? in japan it is the best selled phone of all the time by Docomo after iPhone.... in europe they sell it very much!!!
and don't compare it if you have only seen the release firmware..... if you would compare this then the hero would be one of the worst android phone ever...... slow like hell!!!!
if you can't believe me: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sqqeAFONSbw
and btw..... the X8 is not yet on the market so don't talk about bad selled device.....http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Aknf9PhLW8A
Go die
Xperia sucks more balls than Mr.Bucket
The hero on the other hand is a masterpiece of art
Rather than discussing about which phone is better (which is the hero) lets talk about the Possibility of a X8 rom for the hero

I don't think that we should port the whole ROM,only the UI.Those blue menus,Timescape,Mediascape and generally all of Sony's stuff that can't be found somewhere else. But I think the ROM should be based on one of Hero's 2.1 ROMs.

I think that would be impossible because of the framework.

The whole rom itself is garbage - mediascape timescape everything sony has modified is garbage - even the theme is
I returned my x10 and got an acer liquid with 2.1 - rooted and installed modified by me rom and the performance on this (with the same cpu at lower clock) is that I have 2x the performance in benchmarks than the x10 with the same hardware - so whatever sony has done slowed that chip down quite a bit - I would not trust anything from them after such a botched release - this **** is worse than what I run on my magic - literally was using my magic again after 1 day because 2.1 cyanogen is SO much better than anything sony can cook up... its pretty sad actually - now Im happy with the acer liquid until I get the Galaxy S
Every phone is practically getting froyo or has a date around when, but t-mobile, and htc are keeping quiet about it. What do you guys think?

I kept hearing at least by the end of the year. Some people say since we got that one OTA update, it means we probably won't be getting Froyo for a while...
I dunno though, it'd be nice. :x
The Slide is getting FroYo although no dates have been given
I think you guys won't get it.for a while...my friend has a slide, and he is a bit pissed that he won't be getting froyo soon

I heard maybe around October but nothing etched in stone. Its just a waiting game but I am sure we will get it eventually.
Are you guys KIDDING? You are whining on an android modding site, that you dont have froyo!? when they are a plethora of guides and FROYO ROMS to choose from!? Seriously..
@jdv28 not everybody roots so if you are here to talk crap then don't even bother, no life

Plus I think they want Espresso Froyo, not vanilla Froyo.
The thing is that the Froyo is "comming soon" and we the users who haven't rooted yet are undecided to whether wait and get the clean update, or choose to figure the root thong out and get Froyo and its features nooow.
Right now I'm gathering information, reading tutorials, and understanding everything to be ready to root and flash Cyanogen Rom, now I just hope that by the time I do all this I don't want to hear "hey yo heard the news!? Froyo for Slide is hea!" I'd be maaad!!
But this thought comes to my mind... Ain't I getting the same thing?? The difference is that I'd be rooted...

Yes if you were to go and root your phone, you can have froyo all day, but everyone is waiting for an official release so they can keep the Sense UI, which has all the nice widgets and such. I myself am skeptical as to when that will happen. I like froyo and all, but I've always been a fan of the Sense UI, so ill stick it out, occasionally flashing all the other great roms we have.

Why would you be mad?...I think you dont completely understand the whole concept of XDA...Devs can make a rooted version of a OTA rom, including an Froyo Esp when its released...So no worries, have root makes the phone...well yours! Before you didnt have full control and know you do, ive been using android since last october and had the chance to use eclair, froyo, sense, espresso all on my g1, now that i have a slide i only want sense non of that boring vanilla crap, that can kick rocks or something. Im all about Eye-candy, i get bored of looking at vanilla android.

plus, an official ota will also improve all current froyo builds for the MTS. alot of stuff can be ported and fixed like bluetooth, wifi, etc...
It took me ages to decide to root, and once I did, i went back to the stock rom (rooted). Two years ago my phone was a P.O.S. till Cyanogen came up and beat it into shape. Now i have a decent device with OK software. We've come a long way and more and more people are happy with stock. Once they work the bugs out of Cyanogenmod I will probably move ove. Till then, i am good.
2.2 for the Slide should be out before the end of the summer according to our HTC rep, most likely sometime in September. The other bit of good news is that it will include WiFi calling ability.

Yes I understand, man this developers are awesome!
How ever, as for what I've seen the root method is still complicated for the MyTouch Slide, 2 procedures to root and one to flash a room, (I'd like CyanogenMod)
I've dealed with Sony Ericsson Walkman phones modding, but Android's are more complex xO
The things that make me feel like trying it out are:
-Froyo of course..
-Full Flash Player 10.1
-Install apps on SD (I've read it requires more things like a partition and don't know what else)
-Live Wallpapers
-make it mine.....
The things that pull me back and make me feel like not. trying:
What if battery life was better in stock rom??
The tutorials sound a lil' experimental
Besides rooting and rom flashing, there also this Radio thing.... is it nesesary or optional??
I'd like to save my self fun time and head breaking from not trying. THEN WHY I AM HERE?!---- Because I'm undecideeeeeeed xO

Trust me battery wont change just cause you rooted, some say Froyo has "better" battery life, now i cant promise cause i dont use froyo on my slide.I oc and get 1 day+....Well depending on usage of course.
You need to upgrade your radio too, it is very simple to root, i rooted my slide twice with the new new method that just came out(1-2 weeks ago)
Also some people are 15, and have their parents paid the bill, as well as paying for warranty every month, so rooting is not an option for me.

Hey guys, new to Android, just got my Desire HD today and i'm blown away......
Just wondering what cool apps etc things i can do to get going?
I'm with Orange UK and it's got their branding on it so if i can get rid of that for a start that would be a bonus....
Any other tips etc?
Thanks!

id start by just appreciating the system for what it can and cant do, whilst reading stickies on here and seeing if you need or want to do anything to improve it
Thanks for the reply.
Yea i've done a bit of research but i've got alot more to do, i do really find Android to be great so far, better than any other O/S on a mobile phone i've used before, Symbian iOS etc...
I got my Desire HD on Orange last week and besides messing with the phone itself, the only thing I've done is remove the Orange-branded OS and install the stock HTC one. At some point I'll look into the advantages of rooting, custom ROMs and other things of that nature.

yeah i would like to do this, Orange has got some bloatware on their one, where did you get the Stock HTC OS? and is there a tutorial for installing it?
Sorry if i'm overlooking the forums.
Have a look in the development sections, there are some great tutorials out already for rooting and changing ROMs on your new Desire HDs
Hi,
i am also new to android.. Before i bought my htc desire hd i used an iphone 3g. As i got my htc the phone flashed me totally. I would never buy an apple product
The best way for you is to read in this nice forum.

I followed the above guide because I thought that under the current version of the Orange firmware, downgrading would be necessary. I'm not sure if just creating a goldcard and installing a 1.32 ROM would work.
If you're new to this type of thing like I am, just do some reading around this forum and the development forum and you should have some idea of what you want to do.
Like mentioned above, there are some very useful guides in the development section.
hi people
im not sure what people think of the sposed future stock update to gingerbread but i have a question
does anyone think that with the future stock update to gingerbread on its way and HTC hammering down the security holes, will it still be fairly easy to root ?
thanks for any replies
Hmm, well whenever there has been a update, we always find a way to root. dont worry this is a hot phone right now, and alot of devs will find ways around the security issues, Everything can be hacked, it just takes time thats all
alritey matey
cheers for that, hope it dont take to long

the only thing i dont like about sense is the screen density lol
anyway cheers for all the replies muchly appreciated
