Hey guys, new to Android, just got my Desire HD today and i'm blown away......
Just wondering what cool apps etc things i can do to get going?
I'm with Orange UK and it's got their branding on it so if i can get rid of that for a start that would be a bonus....
Any other tips etc?
Thanks!

id start by just appreciating the system for what it can and cant do, whilst reading stickies on here and seeing if you need or want to do anything to improve it
Thanks for the reply.
Yea i've done a bit of research but i've got alot more to do, i do really find Android to be great so far, better than any other O/S on a mobile phone i've used before, Symbian iOS etc...
I got my Desire HD on Orange last week and besides messing with the phone itself, the only thing I've done is remove the Orange-branded OS and install the stock HTC one. At some point I'll look into the advantages of rooting, custom ROMs and other things of that nature.

yeah i would like to do this, Orange has got some bloatware on their one, where did you get the Stock HTC OS? and is there a tutorial for installing it?
Sorry if i'm overlooking the forums.
Have a look in the development sections, there are some great tutorials out already for rooting and changing ROMs on your new Desire HDs
Hi,
i am also new to android.. Before i bought my htc desire hd i used an iphone 3g. As i got my htc the phone flashed me totally. I would never buy an apple product
The best way for you is to read in this nice forum.

I followed the above guide because I thought that under the current version of the Orange firmware, downgrading would be necessary. I'm not sure if just creating a goldcard and installing a 1.32 ROM would work.
If you're new to this type of thing like I am, just do some reading around this forum and the development forum and you should have some idea of what you want to do.
Like mentioned above, there are some very useful guides in the development section.

I recommend you start off with Cyanogen. Once you're comfortable enough to experiment, throw on JACHero. The HTC TouchFlo UI is truly great and worth the lack of bluetooth.
The Hero Theme doesn't give you any of the benfits of the actual Hero UI. I previously ran The Dude's w/ the Hero theme and found it was lagged too much and ate too much battery for just being a bit prettier. JACHero on the other hand is a different phone that is superior to the G1 is nearly every way.

thanks for the reply, If i ran JACHero is there any lag? Also would i be able to keep the Stock radio, I noticed this phone has signal in my house, My Iphone and blackberry do not.
also should i even bother with apps2sd because I have a class 4 sd card.
Also anyone know what a PVT board is and how to figure out i have one?
Most of your questions have been answered. Please search. If its ROM related search the Development forum (there is nice sticky at the top of the thread list), if its theme related then it will be in the Theme section.

Yes. To find out if you have a PVT board, hold the camera while you press the power button to turn it on. It will say it at the top

From Which ROM/software to run all the way down to settings and Apps. Would really appreciate the run down. Thanks

The Answer
hey there. im gonna actually answer ur question instead of telling u to search. okay well there is really two things u can do, maybe three.
1) install cyanogen's ROM
2) hero ROM
3) donut optimized ROM
my first choice would be cyanogen. visit his site:
www.cyanogenmod.com
this rom is basically the most stable and fastest rom out there. its running the 1.6 donut firmware but it is highly optimized. this is what i am using now. second option is to install a hero rom. i would try either eugenes rom or maxisma's hero roms. they are the best and they offer the best support without being rude. check them out here:
Eugene:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=575501
Maxisma:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=566965
third option (which i dont recommend) is to use an optimized donut rom that ISNT cyanogen. i wouldnt even bother with these. these are the three roms i would use. take care.

People would be more willing to help instead of just saying to search for the answer, if the OP had posted this in the right section of the forum. This belongs in general, not development. That's why Evil and I did not help. As you can tell by my link, I posted the forum rules and how you need to post in the right section because development is not general, like this question is.

the choices that you made are your own, i simply thought i would answer the questions. no one commented on the fact that you didnt answer. all i said is that i am going to answer instead of telling him to search because telling him to search doesnt answer his question. you dont have to justify your choice. if u dont wanna answer then dont. u dont have to make a post about WHY you didnt answer. this is the start this thread getting off topic.

All opinions are subjective. I would flash dwang 1.11 to your MT3G as it runs a lot more smoothly than Cyanogen. Look for dwang's rom on this board as IMO it is the fastest and most optimised rom for the 32b Magic/MT3G.
Yeah dwang's rom is really good. Using it right now. And there are good alternatives for some of the Hero features. Beautiful widgets or weather widget (skinnable!) instead of Hero flip clock. Advanced Launcher if you want more home screens, spelldial for responsive touch dialing (can't live without this one). And the touch keyboard from Hero is available (search HTC IME, this keyboard also includes XT9).
As for the wrong section;
Maybe subtexts for the categories would help a bit?

Welcome to Android and hello from a fellow MT3G user. Important things to know about modding your android phone, the Mytouch 3g = Magic 32b. This is important and how developers explain which rom (build) is for which phone. The second most important thing to invest in is a CLASS 6 micro SD card. This is very important, class 6 is the speed of the SD card and a very fast SD card is needed for running any HERO rom. HERO roms put files on the SD card that are needed with normal usage so if you use the SD card that comes with the phone (class 2) it will run slow as hell. A good, cheap class 6 SD card is this 8gb Adata card for 17.75. This is the SD card I use. If you're still on the SD card that comes with the phone, you're not out of luck. I would start out with Cyanogen's 4.3.2.1, his current build. His builds have the latest and greatest features while not starting from a hero build. It does not have the super fancy UI, but still looks a lot prettier than stock, is rock solid stable and runs extremely fast. Check it out here.
I'm assuming you've never rooted an android phone before, so when you're ready, which this step-by-step video on how to root . I would certainly recommend watching the video a few times before you do it and make SURE to follow it exactly. Good luck, have fun and post up with your thoughts and experiences.

So what are the benefits from running different roms? Will the processing be faster? In other words, if you (the reader of this reply) was a salesman and I (acscott22) was the customer why would I want to switch roms? What am I going to notice from making the switch?
does the mt3g need partitions or do you need them only for certain roms?
quick question
Since HTC has already stated they wont release Sense UI for any google branded phones (Mytouch 3g, etc) instead of flashing a Hero rom, wouldn't it be easier to flash a vanilla unbranded Donut ROM onto the Mytouch and then add the Sense UI?
not sure if anyone has tried this yet though

Well, a salesman wouldn't really tell you to as it's all a bit nudge-nudge wink-wink and voids your warranty.
Pretty much you'll be allowing yourself to do things you wouldn't normally be able to do with a stock ROM, some of which would help speed up your phone a bit. It's not so much about just speeding things up but exploring the potential of the phone to its fullest. Not only that but you'll have all the latest and greatest updates without waiting for you carrier to release them over OTA! Impress your friends! Befuddal your enemies (see; iPhone users)!

Only with ROMs that support/require them, primarily for App2SD (instead of storing applications in the phones internal storage storing them in on the SD) and/or a swap partition to free up RAM. Most of the time it's not necessary but you'll be missing out on the additional, beneficial functionality.

Unfortunately I'm pretty sure Sense UI requires a lot of dependencies that are only present in Hero ROMs, and can't just be brought across wholesale from said Hero ROM to AOSP builds.
ok but HTC has said that they are going to release sense UI to unbranded Magics. Not sure when, but they did say that it was going to happen. I guess I'll have to hold out. I cant go without bluetooth, but I really like the Sense UI of the Hero Roms.

I've been a lurker for quite some time... and I always feel like i'm missing something. I've already got the cyanogenmod, but what you posted I found was helpful. There's a lot of roms out there, there's lots of lists, and many have a lot of information in them. Informations good, but it's nice to see it summarized in just a few sentences.
Sure a lot of posts are reposts... but sometimes those good because older stuff needs updating/clarification.
Thanks!

Thanks man, I've heard so much good about it, but lately there have been so many bugs/problems being discussed on the forums, that I'm slightly scared.
Okay, thanks for the advice, will do. I just was looking at some ROMs, and saw how awesome Energy looked with MaxManilia haha
Hi there! Welcome to XDA Developers
I see your HD2 is arriving soon! Trust me it is SHINY!!!
And you'll love the way the device balances in your hand. Anyways, i'd suggest first of all to learn how to use the phone. Like, familiarise yourself with the layout, play around with the camera, and best of all flow through the Sense UI.
To learn how to flash ROMS, go to the HD2 Rom development section and head into the HSPL Guide there. Everything is mentioned step-by-step. Follow instructions carefully
That said, i'll strongly advice you try out more than one ROM, as each chef has his/her own unique taste and preferances. You're sure to find a ROM that's "just right" for you!
Remember to install Chainfire's HD2 Driver Patch, as that'll make your device run even smoother. Finally, browse through the General forum, and make sure you check out the Tips and Tricks forum, which is a life saver! If you want, also update your phone's Radio Version (found in the ROM Development Section)

I suppose that the cookie mod imitates the iPhone's app screen? Maybe people will be like "My device has 3 UI's in 1: iPhone home which is what the cookie rom seems to do, then there's the WinMo Start button, when you tap that, you get the Program menu...and last but not least...HTC Sense
Plus it gives a more wider base for the HD2 to stand on (if that made Sense)
Mind the pun

Well there are 2 ways of getting the 1.66 Rom, first would be HTC's website, then Support, and go to the ROM update (You'll need to enter some digits found under your phone battery) OR...you can go to the HD2 ROM Development section and then look under the Stock Roms (easier and faster in my opinion than going all the way to HTC's website!)
Ps. EnergyRoms are amazing...you won't know until you try and experiance it for yourself! There are many tweaks etc applied...and it has a cool theme set. You'll also get regular updates

I flashed my touch pro2 and I liked the results but I'm just not that good at hooking things up like this. I got lucky that time.
I have a nexus one and I am interested in the the HTC sense ROM along with the the NexTheme. If someone could help me set this all up on my phone through skype or msn messenger, I can pay you through paypal.
Would also like to know how I can restore back to the original ROM. thanks

Flashing an Android device is similar, just not as device driven... you need to have a little know how before you attempt to do anything. there are plenty of how-to's and such found in the sticky's.

NexTheme is NOT compatible with the HTC Sense ROM. NexTheme was designed for the basic Google based 2.1 ROM's. Right now there is only one theme that I know for sure looks good and thats the Experion mix. NexTheme is basically themed to look like a glorified Sense ROM, and trust me, it looks great!

once again, check out the stickies. Unlocking your bootloader CANNOT be undone at this time. If you are scared to lose your warranty or dont really know exactly what you are doing, I would advise from trying to do so. If you are up to it, read read read read read... man that was weird.. keyboard kept typing READ... but anyways.. read the stickys and the basics and the informational how-to's before trying anything.
There are plenty of videos of how to root, install a rom and there is even a complete detailed guide on how to go from stock to sense...
Hi, I'll soon be receiving my new G1, cant wait, but wondering what the best way to get Hero on it is. By that I mean, and from a purely objective point of view, which is one of the fastest/stable and fully operational Hero ports available? Alternatively, would it be better to get an older version of Android and theme it like Hero (the launcher). That way in theory it would be a fast stable system that looks like hero. What differences would there be if that was the case (in terms of functionality/features of the operating system etc) between these options?
Many thanks!
Well, I'm assuming you just want Sense as that's what Hero basically is. There are many Sense ROMs for the G1. You'll have to pick which one you like the best. All the reviews in the world can't account for your personal opinion. However, be aware that none have working bluetooth.

Thanks for the reply! So none of these sense roms have bluetooth working? hmm, would that mean that the best way would be to either get one of the fully working hero roms or an older android and theme it?
start here:http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=668090 for a list of roms.
If I was you, which I was at one point, I would forget the sense roms since they are nice at first but eventually get really slow. Instead go with an eclair rom such as CaNNoN202 Complete Eclair this is what I have been using for the last month and it is still very snappy too date.

thank you! What are the main differences between 1.5 and 2.1 roms?
1.5 was the second version of Android called Cupcake then came Donut 1.6 which is the current version. 2.1 is somewhat new but 2.2 is the most current only available on certain phones such as the Nexus One. 2.1 has certain features not available on 1.6. If you are new to this you should read as much as you can because you can really damage your phone if you take a wrong step.
Once you get rooted next would be to install a custom rom. Donut roms are the most stable but some of these Eclair roms are very close. Check out theunlockr.com for a video tutorial on how to root and install a rom.
Good lcuk!

Bada's pointing you in a good direction. Just wanted to point out that any "hero theme" you get won't have all the Sense things that most Hero people like. Also, the launcher will just look Hero-ish. It won't have its functionality.

Thats great thanks for your help! I first purchased a G1 which was stuck on the G1 boot screen which i believed I could fix. Id never owned this phone before and so did alot of reading up while waiting for it to arrive to determine the reason it was bricked and a possible solution. As it happens it was a true brick, no access to bootloader, safe mode, recovery or fastboot. I thought i I could force commands to be sent using SDK via Windows but it would never be detected. The one good thing that came out of it, is I have a good knowledge of what to do and what not to do when rooting and upgrading so when my fully functioning one comes I will take all steps to avoid the same fate as the owner of the bricked phone!

Again, thanks for your input! I think my options so far would be to try out a few sense roms, some claim to be quite fast and a few reviews on youtube look promising. Really like the look of it, will have to give them a go to see if i like the feel of them!
Avoid DangerSPL. lbcoder, with the help from a few others I believe, have found way to 100% guarantee you DON'T brick, but you have to follow the instructions. I'm sure no other phone needs this, so I'm just -assuming- you're not fully read up on it. Please, this is the NUMBER ONE way bricks occur and is completely avoidable. You CAN recover a bricked phone through JTAG but it is difficult and offers new ways of completely destroying the phone from ANY future use.
