Rogers will soon be offering all dream owners a free upgrade to the Magic. Due to Rogers pushing out a android 2.1 update to the magic in the comming months and the dream receiving no such update, rogers will be allowing dream users to trade in for a free magic.
http://www.teleclick.ca/2010/01/rogers-wireless-lets-htc-dream-users-upgrade-to-htc-magic/
dont know about you guys but i think im going to take advantage of this deal to get the added ram the magic has. i will miss more hard keyboard though...
That is definitely a downgrade.
No keyboard = no good.
It's a step in the right direction but don't get too excited.
The Magic and the Dream came out at the same time for Rogers and most of us knew the Magic had more ram but we still took the Dream because of the keyboard.
Also don't forget that Rogers has a policy that you can't get HUP from them in the first 2 years of your contract with a smartphone. Now obviously they are going to tweek this to allow us to "upgrade" to the Magic but it will surely come with a contract extension, which mean you'll be tied for another 2 years before you can upgrade again. Lets also not forget that the Magic has the same slow arse processor the Dream does. Do you really want to be stuck on the Qualcomm® MSM7201A 528MHz processor for another 2 years ?
I'd be much more willing to spend a few bucks and get a real phone. You know if the Rogers had the Milestone or the Nexus One.
I personally don't have any issue with the CPU on DREAM.
It *IS* a phone....
I would NEVER give up the keyboard though. Even for a GN1.
Those rumors of the "enterprise edition" of the GN1 with a keyboard sound nice....
Yeah the keyboard is a must! I have had alot of HTC devices in the past with no keys, so I finally got the dream a few months back and so far I am loving it, and the update doesnt really matter to me once my 2 year is done I will get a new device.

Well I did the free upgrade. I was 7 months into my 3 year contract so I had to renew for 3 years and my HUP credit gets reset to the full 3 years but I figured I couldn't pass it up.
Question is do I keep both phones or do I sell the Magic brand new, or do I jump ship and sell the Dream and hold onto the Magic for a little while?
dont know why you had to re-sign for 3 years... i sweet talked the rogers agent and stayed on my existing contract (2years 7months) as well as i didnt have my HUP change...
mabey its because im a stunningly good looking guy.. who knows
Well everyone I wouldn't worry too much about the 2 yrs before you get another HUP (Hardware Upgrade) there are big changes coming to the program!!
Imagine a HUP for the cost of a new activation, unheard of right? Welcome to the new Rogers, yes there will still be a 2 or 3 yr commitment required in order to get that new HUP, but instead of paying $199 for a new phone, it will be as if you walked in off the street and signed up!!
Lot's more new stuff coming out in the future, so stay tuned!!!
Forgot to mention the deal is only available till end of this month. Also you get to keep your dream. Free phone, can sell your old one if you want, its stupid to not take advantage of this deal, unless you bought the dream when it first came out.
I called in to see if I could get this upgrade, but they said that I was not eligible because I have not had the account for two years. Is this correct, do you have to have been with rogers for over two years to get this upgrade?
Call them back and tell them that the offer is new and they can ask for help if they need to. The 2yr HUP term has been waived for this offer and it is available for those that have gotten their phone either through a hardware upgrade or through a new activation between Jan 1st 2009 and Dec 31st 2009
I called them today and the customer rep explain to me that only different will be that there a keyboard (like they didn't wanted me to upgrade), I just listen to them and got the phone approved everything waived off, there some people on the internet mentioning that there a 50$ there isn't, you only get the 50$ once you renew your contract, but they made a exception for this HUP. @beav_35, if you mention hardware upgrade they wont let you do that, explain to them of the specific Dream to Magic upgrade.
Just have a HUP 30 Dec. 2009 (Dream) now upgraded again to (Magic) for $0.00 just and additional one (1) month extension to my current 3-year term. pls $50 rebate.

I said the same until I actually got the N1 and used the soft keyboard. The phone is snappy and responsive enough, and the screen is large enough that the soft keyboard is actually easier for me to type on than the physical keyboard on my now retired G1.
You really should try it out physically before you decide, but yeah the N1EE may make me eat my words (if they don't significantly increase the size of the phone to add the keyboard (but I'm guessing it will be back to roughly the same size as the G1).
On another note, I'm really wishing T-Mobile would do the same, at least a G1 to refurb MyTouch upgrade. Would make my wife worlds happier.
Isn't that complete bull****? I'm running 1.6 on my Rogers dream now from Cyanogen.
ALSO can I get this upgrade? I don't have a contract with Rogers. I bought my Rogers dream from ebay and use it on Bell?

a representative of CLEARWIRE jus stepped in my store to promote the new WIRELESS hotspot called the "iSPOT",similar to the sprint's EVO 4G $29.99 a month hotspot."iSPOT" is free with 2 years contract and u pay $25 a month for the full only 4g network sharing to 8 devices and also can carry around anywhere u go.
now the main part he said CLEARWIRE also lauching 4g phones.soon as he said that i asked "by which manufacture?" he replied HTC.i asked "any info on what kinda HTC?" he replied 2ND GENERATION HTC EVO 4G with 2 years contract.plan $75 unlimited talk(3g),text and data(4g).COMING END OF THIS YEAR MIDDLE OF NOVEMBER IN 80 MARKETS INCLUDING NEW YORK.
Hmm, wasn't aware that HTC had any upcoming phones this year. I'm skeptical.
I also don't believe anything Clearwire says after I was an actual Clearwire customer and swallowed their tripe for 5 months.
if thats true.. then im not surprised. every few months HTC rolls out a new phone lool..
I use one every day...they have two kinds...one is a 4g only hotspot and the other does 3g and 4g. Mine its the 4g only device... Works like a charm... Runs my playstation and laptop with no blips... fits in your pocket

please note that the ispot is intended/designed to only accept mac id signatures in line with apple products (ipad/ipod/iphone/iwhatever) and some "tinkering" will be required to allow non-apple devices to tether.
How about not paying for either and just tethering your phone? Lol why pay when its free......

I don't buy the "second generation EVO" - the Evo is only 2 months old. I think this is just "a new HTC phone"
those r just few infos from clearwire.im just curious on the "HTC DEVICE".
..........
The iSpot is not a phone. It is a modified version of the Clear Spot 4G+.
It will only connect to Apple Iphones, Ipads and Ipod Touch devices as it comes out of the box.

Well thankfully Sprint lets me upgrade every year since I'm a preferred customer... whatever that means. apparently they'd prefer to not have other customers? Either way I'll ditch my phone the second a new HTC model comes out (assuming its better then the EVO). I have no loyalty when it comes to phones & women
You didn't hear it from me but, YES Clear will be offering both the EVO 4G and EPIC 4G re-branded to unknown names. I cannot confirm this, but I have heard unlimited everything will be cheaper than cricket. NO it will not run gingerbread at release, it will run 2.2 and YES I have seen it. It will be available nationwide, as Clear has changed their marketing strategy to prepare for it's release. They now also sell the 4G/3G combo cards nationwide.
What's the point? Sprint already owns a majority of Clear, and Sprint already markets the EVO and EPIC.
And how can one speculate on whether something will be gingerbread. Code hasn't been released yet, and probably won't be for six months at least. We all know how quick HTC has been with Android updates, though I will admit they were fairly quick with Froyo on the EVO.

T-Mobile is launching a bunch of new devices, new data plans, and rumored tethering plans on November 3, so I would imagine the G2 will be updated around the same time to offer the tethering option. But that's just a guess.
There's still no definitive release date for the OTA.
Probably when they make the tethering option public, they should send out OTAs a week or two after.

I got some news about the ota. I went to a t-mobile kiosk where I bought my g2 and was told by the guy who sold me the phone that either next week or week after the ota will be rolling out. He pretty much guaranteed me that it will roll out just after the mytouch 4g comes out, which is in a couple of days. That would make logical sense for it to come out just after the mytouch because t-mobile wants to hype that up. All the goodies we've been told are coming with it (wifi calling and tethering). The guy said that he wasn't sure if t-mobile was going to charge for tethering, but if they do then the price will be between $10 - $15. Personally I believe the info I was just given. I was told this today.

Well thanks for updating us. Let's hope it's free and that the update is in fact REAL.
Posted on my T-mobile G(spot)2 xD
Please check out my amazing blog- http://elgamerlife.blogspot.com/
I hear about all of these "logical" estimates... But the one thing I have found about T-Mobile is that very little is ever done logically.
Every person ANY of us have spoken to has done nothing but estimate, guess or fabricate a date.
It will happen when it happens and not a moment sooner! Hows that?

I was told the same thing today as well, OTA will be rolling out in a week or so, as well as the tethering plan of 14.99 mo if you go with tmos plan. tether plan starts nov 3rd.
On 10/26/10, i PRE-ordered my Sprint Galaxy Tab through BestBuy, especially after seeing a release date of 11/7/10. The only reason i thought that this could be an accurate date is because they do sometimes sell products before the actual carrier does. (Example: HTC Evo 4G WHT was released a few days early.)
Yesterday i received an email from BestBuy stating that there has been a change to the release date for my pre-ordered item! The new release date is 11/14/10.
*disappointed*
sorry, about the news. i was going to preorder with the samethought that bestbuy might ship early, but thanks to your report, i will wait.

a) T-Mobile Blows.
b) i currently have (3) lines of service through Sprint (HTC Supersonic, Motorola i880, and a Sierra Wireless Overdrive),all still under contract, so i really do not need a 4th line of service. Purchasing Tab out-right to replace supa slow overdrive.
c) T-Mobile Blows.
Give Best Buy more time. They'll keep disappointing you.
Yep, i haven't purchased anything from Best Buy since 2004. I would avoid it like a plague.
It's not bad. They offer you hands on experience before buying stuffs. But they just have little problem here and there. And I grew too frustrated to deal with it.
Thats weird because i had sprint for 4 days when the evo came out and had no service anywhere.. it was ****ing terrible.. even in big rural areas 45 mins from philly.. and have tmo and havent had no service.. so where i am sprint blows ..

I'm a couple weeks away from being eligible for an upgrade with Sprint. I'm sure a lot of you guys are in the same boat as me. What phone are you looking to get next?
The EVO was as easy choice when it came out. There wasn't anything to compete with it other than the iPhone. I don't try to keep up with all the new phones until I am close to an upgrade. There is just too much out there to possibly keep up with.

I upgraded to the et4g was gonna wait for the gnex but got the et4g free without using my upgrade and after playing with both side by side found the et4g to actually be nicer than the gnex
Edit: still got my evo too its active on my second line got to double upgrade from an evo and intercept to an epic touch 4g and evo
We are legion, for we are many

Probably going HTC arrive. It will be nothing on upgrade next month and want to tinker with a windows phone 7 for a while. Evo will go to my oldest who is running a HTC hero.
If I don't like that then my wife's phone is due in May. I'll swap it out for something else.
Current Android family
HTC evo 4g x 2
HTC evo shift
HTC hero
Motorola Xoom
Viewsonic G-tablet
HP Touchpad (running classic nerd)
So yeah just want to tinker with something new for a while
My upgrade is coming up next month as well. (I suppose a lot of us who got the EVO on/near launch day are)
I've put a lot of thought into it and I think I'm going for the GNex. Unless I find out the GS3 devices are coming soon.
My wife got the white Evo when that launched (about a month after the original Evo) and she's waiting for the Galaxy Journal.
I would like to see Sprint carry the Xperia line, particularly the S model. Looks pretty sweet. Otherwise I would go with another HTC flagship device. I might also consider the Galaxy Nexus.
My upgrade is also in April (another day 1 adopter) I'm waiting for either the Galaxy Journal or the S3 (depending on release date) Definitely want an LTE capable device. Not sure if the Journal is going to fall in that category or not.
I'm eligible in June but I'll wait for the first Sprint LTE phone at the end of this year, so long as the suck-factor is low for it.
Sprint is aware that a lot of the Evo owners are coming off contract. I am betting the Galaxy Nexus will be coming out before we fall off contract to entice renewal.
That's what I will be going with.
whatever the next LTE sprint phone with huge screen+lots of features.. will be.
june, i'll be eligible for an upgrade, so hopefully we get something good by then
Upgrade next month here as well. Currently there is nothing worth upgrading too.
I'm hoping it won't be too long until we see some LTE devices.
^^^^^^^^^^^^^
Couldn't agree more. The Et4g is nice, but I prefer HTC, and et4g has already been out for a bit now. I don't mind waiting to see what comes at all. Satisfied with my Evo.

Not due til the end of the year, so I'm going for the galaxy S III.
Not eligible till Feb. 2013 there should be plenty of devices to choose from by then.

I'm in the same boat but will wait and see what comes down the line. I got two E4GT phones for my kids and they are incredible. They lay waste to my EVO. Samsung really stepped up their game. I don't know if HTC will be able to compete from here on out since Sammy has fully commited to Android. I've used the Gnex and don't like it as much as the GSII. I really want a phone that has built in image stabilization for video. Other than that the GSII camera kills! Way better than my little Canon P/S.
I'm waiting for the GNex. I don't have choice since it's my dad's lines, but I think ICS is where it's at.
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA
I am considering moving to Verizon for better LTE coverage.
OG EVO
I don't think I will be upgrading next month when my time comes. There is really nothing out IMHO that can still compete with the OG EVO. Meaning the custom roms, tweeks, etc that you can do to the phone. HTC makes a good solid phone and I would definetly have to stay with a HTC line
Not due till July so ill wait it out for the EVOX/jewel haven't heard to many good things from gnex owners
Pleasantly Mad.
I wanted to wait for the Gnex as well, but that 16gb non-expandable storage limitation is killing me. I want to be able to use my 32gb class 10 with my next phone.
